In addition of to very short battery life post MM (6 hrs to 50%) I've been having an issue with power management. It has happened a number of times when my battery has been between 30 and 50%. The unit will power down giving me an out of power message and if I reboot the battery indicator will show 30-50% before immediately showing empty and powering down again. Even a short connection to a power source seems to reset the problem and I can use the phone normally until it gets down to sub-10% when it drains quickly again. This does not happen every-time it reaches this level and may be related to the final 15-20% of power disappearing very quickly.
I've returned the unit to Sony and they say a bent frame and damaged screen are the cause and the repair isn't covered by the warranty. The screen looked fine when I sent it off to them and there was no discernible damage to the frame. The unit lives in a smart cover and stays out of back pockets.
The Sony support form has other users with similar sounding problems and I wonder whether anyone here has encountered similar. Next, does the Sony repair explanation sound plausible, they want £130 to fix something that doesn't seam to be related to the initial problem.
Pucking SONY CARE always gives false statements.

For reasons I can't fathom, at random times that I can barely predict, my phone will crash and power down. One example is when I'm getting a phone call, it will ring for a second, then shut down, or if I'm web browsing it will die without warning. It will even die in the middle of a call. The shutdown is instant, like pulling the battery. When I reboot, I get to the part after the "G1" screen and has "android" flashing. Then the light on top starts flashing red, then it dies again. If by some miracle, I get to unlock my SIM, it will lock up for a few seconds, then shut down, all the while reporting a critically low battery. It will do this until I put it on charge, then report a normal battery level (or rather what one would expect). It will do this even if I had just taken it off charge, or later in the day.
Try a different battery, yours might be on the verge of collapsing. Either that or an hardware issue.
its most likely a battery problem.
Had the same problem, bought a replacement battery, and it never happened again. lol
I have the same problem. which battery purchase?
My phone suffered some water damage and everything seems fine except for whatever piece of hardware checks if the battery is fully charged (is it on the battery itself?). The amber charging light was on for 5 hours and yet my phone would just boot up to the Today screen, produce a Battery Low message and shut off. I had my phone in the bootloader for a few minutes so I was fairly certain that the battery was charged. By some stroke of luck, I was able to use my phone for a short time. The phone recognized that the battery was full and I was able to browse the internet, make calls, etc. When I rebooted the phone to check if this was a permanent change, I found out that it was not. My phone went back to shutting off upon startup.
Is there a registry entry to disable automatic shut off? I could cook a crude ROM with just this registry entry so that at least my phone would be functional.
Or do I need a new battery?
Thanks in advance for your help
im having similar issue but not from water.. every time i use speakerphone the phone dies or using the camera.. this happens most of the time if i use either one.. im thinking its battery shorting out maybee.. once i plug it in via use or ac to give it power its fine.. i have a replacement battery coming so i hope that will fix it
My Kaiser phone also suffered some water damage from a spilt bottle of water. The amber charging light was on for hours and yet my phone would just boot up to the Today screen, produce a Battery Low message and shut off. By some stroke of luck, I was able to use my phone for a short time after the phone recognized that the battery was full and I was able to make calls etc. When I rebooted the phone after charging to check if this was a permanent change, I found out that it was not. My phone went back to shutting off upon startup. Brought a new battery but still experiencing the same problem. HELP
Alright, so I was clumsy enough to drain my Xperia SEVERAL TIMES.
Honestly I blame the software or calibration, but also myself, since it didn't shut down when it should.
The following would happen, that my phone wouldn't charge. No red LED, nothing. Then when it showed, after countless tries and different power sources, it finally did. It worked like 3 times. Then it started shutting down at 30%, then once when I was using it at 50%. All of a sudden. Since then, it died. It didn't charge, even after I left it for 2 days on the charger. I tried every week, but nothing would happen. Eventually the phone would start vibrating when plugged into the charger, and just die after exactly 30 minutes, every time, giving pulses of vibration.
I opened up the phone, disconnected the battery, and pressed the connector of the vibration motor.
When the vibration is non-stop, even whent he phone is off, it's because of a faulty vibration motor itself, or its connector!! I only had to press it and it stopped.
I left the battery disconnected for 1 to 2 weeks, I don't remember. When I felt the CPU cover, it was kind of electrocuting me. I put a paper between the black strip that leads between the battery and the motherboard, to which somehow the electrocution stopped. I left it charging for 2 days, with the RED led full on all the time. I gave it little hope, but I still pressed the power button mutliple times through out the charging time. This morning, te RED led was Dark Red, very weak. I pressed PWR + VLM DOWN and it gave a little pulse.
It's alive again! I let it charge to 100%, made immediately a backup, and I'll see if it will keep working. I will have to send the phone back to Sony anyway, as I think that the vibration motor will start acting up again as soon as I pick up the phone from the table (it's that sensistive yes). Also, I cannot leave the paper there, and I just want a full functioning phone. Only need to get the silicone glue strip from a distributor that I know so I can properly close it off.
I didn't send it because I needed my data, basically.
I would say, if your phone doesn't react to anything and you're out of warranty, it's worth it to keep trying to charge it, or take the shortcut and buy a new battery, open the phone and connect the new battery. It's really that simple. Otherwise, it might be your motherboard that's dead.
I hope this could help some future troubles of XDA's. Maybe make a new sticky, as this question comes along quite often?
Can someone tell me what this flex cable is connecting?
My phone would sometimes spontanously freeze and switch off, showing the 3 red leds and just stops responding. It won't even take a charge. Usually the battery is at 60% when the phone dies, and sometimes it shows a constant RED led.
The back cover is loose (but has enough adhesive to actually stick reasonably, takes little force to open it up), so I pressed that connector with medium force. The next thing that happened, is that the phone responded to the charger, booted to the "charging state", where it shows the battery state and so on (which it shows it's approx on 60%.
Or could it be that I press something else, which causes my phone to work properly again?

Thanks/Hvala!
But do you know what could be faulty on this specific point, which causes my phone to not charge? Can I find somewhere a complete guide to the disassembly and identification of all parts? It would make it alot easier for me . My phone is running again, going strong at 65% and still discharging for the last 3 hours. I'm logging the microVolts, temperature and other stats from the battery to see if it's the battery causing the malfunction, which I doubt.
Anyway, there should be something. By the way, prior to the issues, my phone dropped flat on the screen on tiles, about 1 meter high. So most likely, there is something loose/messed up. But I don't know what causes the entire system to flash the LED 3 times, saying that the battery is drained, yet after pressing on this point, immediately start up while on the charger.

Please PM me. (you speak croatian?)
I'm trying to figure out the best solution for my wife's Z3 compact. It's unrooted running Lollypop. Besides a shortened battery life, which could just be a battery needing to be replaced situation, her battery sensor is very wonky... often it will appear it has plenty of charge like 80 or 60 and then suddenly drop to zero and shut down... plugging it in after that but not booting it will also show 0 percent.
We've tried both clearing the cache by holding up and power when its off for 3 vibrations and also when its on hard shutting it down with the button next to the SD card but the problem still persists.
I'm thinking I'll replace the battery, but since its a hassle with this model (I'll have to buy a heat gun) I wanted to check in here in case this sounds like larger problem then just a battery near the end of its life.
Thanks.
If you try a complete factory reset or flash a new firmware and it still has issues, I would just replace the battery. This happened to my Z1 and when I replaced the battery it was back to new.
Instead of a heat gun you could try a strong hair dryer. Also, you might need to re-glue the back cover afterwards as the adhesive might be worn out when you take it off.
