Want to get Z3c, what models to avoid? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to sell my HTC 10 and move to z3c because z5c has way too many issues with battery drain and overheating.
I remember that z3c had some serious issues with cracked screen, front and back, by doing nothing or just charging, but it was fixed in a later revision by sony.
Does it still worth buying now? What model/revision to get in Europe?
PS. I need 2 days battery, and HTC gives my 1.5days with 4-5h of SOT.

How Many Years Will This Phone Last?

Sorry if there are already enough questions like this but this device launches in Canada on the 31st of October. I'm torn between this and the HTC One M8. Both are great devices, but this is the one that I want more due to it's size, battery, and camera. The phone I have right now has lasted me 2 years. I plan on having my next device last me 3-4 years, that's why I'm trying to buy one with the greatest battery life.
For the people who have this phone, do you think the phone would be able to last that long? I've seen many complaints about the phone from things such as the back glass cracking to a popping sound when pressing down on the screen. Is there a chance of the glass cracking in the winter time? Should I ignore those complaints and still buy this device when it launches or just go for the M8, even though it's a bigger phone than I want, because of its durable design? So basically, can people please tell me how their experience has been so far?
Also, would it be a better idea to buy it locally or have it shipped from Clove.uk?
Would you be able to answer the next question: When do you think you'll die?
Probably not.
So no one will be able to answer your question really.
In my opinion phones nowadays are made to last only 2 years or something, because technology moves so fast. There are many exceptions tho, I still see many people with their Samsung Galaxy S2 etc, because the phone can still do what they want and they really don't care about having the newest of the newest and the fastest of the fastest. I don't know what phone you have right now, but if you only have it for 2 years you would probably be able to use it for some more years without to many problems (unless you have hardware problems).
In every single Xperia forum (Since the Xperia Z) you'll see complaints about the glass, don't let them scare you away, complainers tend to come here faster then people without any complaints. Just use common sense and use a screen protector/case, the phone isn't made out of .... wait nvm. There is no indestructible material, so I don't know why people act as if their phones are. Of course there are also genuine people who really did nothing wrong with their phone, but we don't live in a perfect world, of course there will be manufacture errors.
Domestic vs International purchase... well... You might be off cheaper at sites like Clove, but when something is wrong with your device you might have to wait longer for your device to be returned to you.
You choose what's more important for you.
My old iPhone 5 never took a scratch to the front glass...it was a tank.
This phone already has a crack all along the back glass and extraordinarily...a scratch on the front glass. Must be made of weaker/ worse quality glass than the iphone 5....which I kept in my pocket with keys, threw around on tables, kept in backpacks with god knows what...and the screen never, ever scratched.
Good build and still going strong...the Z3 C....hmmmm...

Hmm, but that's your own experience, I have witnessed like the opposite. In the end the only true comparison can be made when you look at stats.
I have seen many people with cracked iPhone screens. I have the Xperia Z and many people had cracked screens while to this day I don't have a scratch on my XZ.
AKA most of the time, these things are purely based on opinions.

I always treat my phones like they're made out of glass. Probably because of that shiny flat panel on the front.
If you are to assume that your phone will not suffer any physical damage for 2 years. Would you still want to use it after 1 year?
Multiple things can affect this. Let's say you've owned the phone for a year.
1.) You as a person may have changed during this year, and you may decide what you wanted last year from a phone.. No longer matches what you want this year.
2.) we are on the cusp of 64bit mobile computing. With lollipop coming this November.
What does this mean? App development will evolve and your 32bit android L Z3c may stagger running those apps
I think it's reasonable to assume that most people will be happy with their mobile purchase for a year. After that.. Especially with this jump to 64bit apps it's anyone's guess.
To illustrate, would you be happy with a 32bit iPhone today?
The key things that will limit longevity:
Battery - Performance of most LiPo batteries will start to decline after two years of daily charge cycles.
Android updates - Few OEMs are committed to supporting devices with updates beyond two years.
Port covers - If you use any of them routinely, they'll likely wear out in less than four years.
Glass front/back - Usage dependent
Obviously there are ways to mitigate each of these potential issues. A case, screen protector, and mag charger will help with the wear and tear stuff. For the battery, budget for a replacement in two years. For Android, it's too soon to tell what your options will be. However, even in the worst case scenario, living without updates for two years (assume Sony will continue to support updates for the first two) isn't as bad as it sounds. When Lollipop starts rolling out to Nexus devices next month, most apps will still support KitKat and Jellybean.
Now, whether it's a good strategy to buy a flagship phone and replace it in four years or buy a second-tier device (like a Moto G) for half the price and replace it in two is a more difficult question to answer.

If you want to use your phone longer than 2 years (or, like me, you want to pass it on to your kids after your contract supplies you with a new phone after 2 years) than a phone wih removable battery is something to consider. My Samsungs (though butt-ugly compared to Sony) get a new battery after 2 years ( less than 20 buck) and are good to go for another 2 years.

In terms of battery life yes, but when you look at pc's for example, they are getting more ram (because programs use more ram), more cores (because programs demand more). The same thing is happening in the phone world right now, looking at the transition from 32bit to 64bit phones.

my z3 compact is going strong too, with lineageos 17.1 installed, although battery has definitely seen better days, can say the same for the port cover, the rubber around the cap has worn down and it won't close anymore so I pulled the cap off because I find it annoying, seeking replacement.

[Q] Whether it is worth to buy xperia z in 2015

Hi to all.
I'm planing to by another phone. Budget is limited so there is not to much to pick.
Xperia seems good option because of big screen, LTE connectivity, premium design, important to me a very good camera and at the end is a flagship, but an old one, and that is my only concern.
So, my question is, should i by some newer(new) budget mid ranger or should give a try to Xperia Z? What is your experience with XZ?
Thanks
Ive had mine for a year now and do not intend to replace it any time soon. It runs all the current apps and games!
If your budget is tight, then get a Moto G, or OnePlus One or Nexus 5. Plenty of well specced devices around.

I bought mine 1 year and a half ago, and I can't be happier.
It's an excellent phone, great processor, ram, camera, water proof, design, development ( I had Lollipop from 1st day like a Nexus ), fullhd, 5"...
No need to spend 500€ to get a "rocket" smartphone.

Thanks guys for the reply, for now is tight.
I would like to hear more opinions of owners.
What about screen on time? Now when is for example more then one year old? I don't play heavy games, mostly surfing, taking pictures, little facebook, and a lot texting and calling. And flashing roms of course
For me everything over 3 hours is good.
U can get maximum of 4.5 hours if u r not a gamer ( my experience with games 4 hour screen on time).. May b u will get around 5 hours screen on time if u play with some tweaks..
I bought my XZ this last year in November and I couldn't be happier. Ok, screen on time is not the best out there but, at least for me, it's enough. SOT performance goes between 3-4,5 h, which IMHO I think isn't bad. You could also underclock/undervolt it in case you want to expand its autonomy a bit else.
It depends on the price you are getting at, I would say go for z1 if the price difference is minimal. I've used both, choose the one in your budget
dont buy a Sony phone, they about to go out of business lol
I suggest no.
Xperia Z has following cons:
- Back glas went off due to bad glue.
- CPU throtthling while gaming due to thermal problems, games start to stutter. Device is getting hot while gaming. On 4.4.4 it a little bit better.
- Wifi and Bluettooth disconnects. Search for forums with this problem. You will hate that problem when you decide to get a Smartband. There i no fix for that.
- Weak Battery. I heavily modified my stock rom with tweaks for longer lasting battery, i reduced wakelocks, etc, but still only 1,5 days only with normal use (i dont use LTE). It loses too much battery on standby.

So you came here from the HTC forum, proud of that you succeeded in unlocking the achievement? I find this behaviour a tiny bit bizarre, wondering what are you trying to prove? I mean, if you worship HTC, please remain in your little temple there. There's plenty of terrorist everywhere and nobody needs another one to come, terrorise Xperia or potential Xperia users.
Back on topic:
If you like Sony, just get another Xperia. They're not going out of business anytime soon as if anyone bothered to read, they're exploring (highly unlikely though) to start a jv or selling the business to another company. Of course if that happens, which have a remote chance, you're probably still be receiving smartphone support in the new business arrangement.

- Back glass just fine, over 1.5 years old
- Name one device that doesn't throttle (and doesn't stutter while throttled)
- Wifi and Bluetooth fine as long as you don't use a smartband
- Battery life is average, not really bad but nothing special either, standy is great with the right kernel
Thats my Xperience, no major problems so far.
But really better deals for the money out there.
I guess it depends on the price..
But in today's terms the XZ really isn't great. Like others have said, newer mid-range phones have overtaken the XZ.
Battery life has always been the only major drawback for me using the XZ. In this day and age you should be able to use your phone as much as you like, not holding off reading emails / replying to tweets otherwise it'll die before you get home
You're lucky to get 4 hours screen on time, it's not exactly efficient in standby mode either.
the amount of money you are going to spent just get One Plus One or if you are on budget cost wait till you got abit more money to get a better device
Well, it's a wonderful phone, the main issue with it is the battery
As others said if your gaming is at minimum (1 hour Max a day) you can actually get it to work 8 hours, even more if no gaming and used the stamina mode
Other than that, it's easy to root at all times and relatively easy to flash and customize.
And it will be officially update to lollipop.
I say if z1 is in your range get it only for the battery issue.. If not the XZ is great
Z is a great device.. But u can also buy 1+1 since it has Z2 specs and a better front cam.. It lacks Water resistance like XZ though and the multimedia features won't be like a SONY.. So choose ur needs first and then select the one suitable.. Although i haven't experienced any of the issues which are mentioned in the thread yet.. I hope i won't too.. But still my XZ can beat the s**t outta One M7 & all their desire phones, any iPhone, any S**tsung.. If you are a rough handler of the phone, i suggest u to buy XZ coz its built better and 1+1 seems kinda delicate compared to Sony..

lol what company hire this moron? he cant even finished a sentence correctly.
I most probably will take XZ if i get good offer. But also maybe wait for month or two to see what will came out.
I also considering to buy SGS4 but i prefer Sony over Samsung. Only reason to take S4 will be the battery life. But like i said before i can live with 3+ hours of sot. Currently i'm using LG O4X which have vary bad sot. 2:30 is max that i can get. And all kind of problems with RIL, it's really "demanding" device, thanks to developers i still using him, but i think not for long.
Thanks

Can you spell out some of those mid-range phones that are better than the XZ? my GF wants a new phone, and i cant seem to find a device thats as thin as the Z, has a fullHD 5" screen and 2gigs RAM and a 5.0 update for similar money...
this really isnt a sarcastic question. I just want to know what are those mid-range devices with these specs, so i can buy her a better phone and save some cash?
btw with heavy usage my Z never died on me until i came home(which means the whole day). im sorry if you use battery hogging apps that dont let your device sleep when you turn off the screen...
@Tommy-Geenexus
Do you really suggest that old spec phone to buy someone, with known not solved software problems on top of serious casing and thermal design flaws?
There are better options on the market. For that money you can have a LG G2 or a Galaxy S4 or a Honor 6 or One+ One.

Buying a Z3C in May 16 , do it or not?

Hi guys ,
I'm using the Galaxy S3 for few years now and I'm thinking of changing my phone since I would be leaving my house at 5 and only returning at 7 now. The Galaxy S3 can only provide me with 3 to 4 hours of SOT and its not enough.
I'm currently looking at Galaxy J7 , Xperia Z3 , Xperia Z3C and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 due to large battery capacities or great battery life as suggested by GSMArena.
My Sister has the Galaxy J7 and she can easily get around 6 hours SOT per charge.
I'm considering Z3 and Z3C because GSMArena is giving them a very good rating on battery life (Although its based on 4.4.4)
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has 4000mAh and users are reporting 6~10 hours SOT.
My friend has a Z2 and he really likes it (So am I). I've also used the Xperia Ray before changing to S3 and personally I would prefer Sony > Samsung > Xiaomi. I've used the Xiaomi redmi Note 2 for two months when I sent my S3 for volume button replacement and the 3000mAh battery can only give me 4hrs SOT which is really bad. The Android skin (MIUI) is also very buggy and RAM consuming. Sony's approach to make their UI similar to AOSP and still updating their old devices is one the reason I like Sony.
Dear community of Z3C , would you say that buying a Z3C now is worth it or not? I'm going to use my new phone for at least 2~3 years. Thanks in advance

Ill say its worth it since its very cheap and has the best battery life, many reviewers claim it as the "king of battery life". I have been using it for almost a year and I am satisfy with it. I was gotta buy the Z5 compact but been hearing bad stuff about the SD810 and not much development.......so Z3 compact for the win, then again, its just my opinion
A phone is a very personal thing, it makes a statement about who you are and what your taste in gadgets is.
The Z3 compact is a pocket phone, it's small, discrete and stylish. For people who who don't want to look like idiots holding some massive screen to the side of their head, so big they can't see.
Asking people to help choose a phone is a bit weird. It's like asking someone you don't know to decide what you're going to wear. It's a personal thing.
The Z3c is completely waterproof. The camera is outstanding, but you do have to get it out of Auto and put the .iso down to 50 or 100
There is built in noise canceling, missing from most phones. You need to buy the headphones, but it works well and sounds good when you're on a train or in a crowd.
The screen is an IPS, meaning you can view it from many angles, not just directly in front of you.
People ***** about Sony screens cracking because unlike other phones, when they crack you can't use them any more, so you have to pay for repair.
I don't think Sony phones are any better or worse than other manufacturers, they all use the same Gorilla glass. They all break when you drop them or sit n them. I had a Z1c that had a cracked screen, six months after I bought it, Sony repaired or free of charge. Sony will repair it free if it's a genuine fault in manufacturing, they will also charge you to repair it if you drop it or sit on it, they know the difference.
Personally the Z3c is still a good option to buy. It has just as many features as the latest Z5c phone other than fingerprint recognition, the battery lasts longer and because it has been out longer there are loads of custom mods and roms that you can load onto your phone to make it cool.
I just returned back to the Z3C after owning the Z5C and selling it last week. Z5 on LP and then MM was a disaster. Too many problems that I couldn't take it anymore. So I say go for it. It's cheap right now and I'm not experiencing any problems on MM with it.

Battery drain

Hello everybody,
reading XDA forums for a while, I now have a problem with my Mi 5, that no other thread seems to cover (sorry if I'm wrong).
I bought my 32 GB Mi 5 from gearbest in July and Battery life from the beginning was not as good as GSMarena promised. I can't recall any numbers but I blamed the "shop-version" of android and tried the stable ones from english miui site, but no luck. I even tried CM-13 but battery life there was really bad (8-10 % per hour). Right now i have the latest stable (global V8.1.2.0.MAAMIDI) and it uses almost 4 % per hour in flight mode! The funny thing: even powered of, the phone drains the battery at that rate (actually not funny)
So my question is: By any chance, is this something, which could be caused by software or is it definitely a hardware fault? Since i flashed the firmware, gearbest refuses any asisstance (warranty void).
Any idea or help is gratly appreciated!
I have got similar trouble with my mi5/64 gb.
I have been inquiring and testing with many old and new version of stock roms (meaning miui) and custom roms for several months.
Moreover, I have used and tested with many battery saving and improvement apps too. I also flashed with MPdecion mod.
I am now with the latest eu developer rom of Nougat 6.12.15....
Unfortunatelly, I found no solution no improvement. My battery life is avarage 13-15 hours.. Even it drains 4% per hour while fully powered off.
As a result, I have no more option but to replace battery with a new one (purchased from Aliexpress but not yet arrived) thou I have little hope thinking that this might be due to defected motherboard.
I may suggest you to return your device or get replaced with another one..
Hello sas_sas,
my deepest sympathties to your situation. I'm still hesitating to open the phone, but since gearbest refuses any warranty (due to flashing the phone :silly I might try between Christmas and New Year. One easy way to narrow down the fault would be to fully charge the phone, disonnect the battery and leave it for a day. When reconnected and powered up the phone shows no disacharge you could save your money for a new battery. Also i think a faulty battery would already have blown up during quickcharge.
This issue is really a shame! Xiaomi is regarded as a premium brand but i couldn't find a way to contact them to describe the obvious hardware problem. Gearbest just holds their hands in the air and blames the customer. That's really annoying.

Somebody had the z3 compact WITHOUT issues?

I want a compact phone with long battery life and the only option seems to be the Z3 compact, on paper i love it, seems to be perfect, but what stops me from buying it are the build issues, seems the build quality on the z3c is crap, do people who had this phone for a long time WITHOUT issues exists?
Indoctrinate me, or not
This phone no longer has long battery life if you are on Marshmallow... 4-5-6 hours of SOT is "normal", on lollipop it was like 5-6-7 hours and on kitkat it was 9-10-11...
I love this phone, the camera is good but not perfect (too much noise, my girlfriend's normal Z3 has the same issue, the reason I don't want to stick with Sony anymore... they make the best camera sensors but have the WORST camera software...), my vibrator is very noisy, (it peeled-off inside the housing, when I push it hard next to the bottom speaker it stops being noisy for some time and peels-off again to be buzzy again).
If you want the phone with perfect size, it's a perfect choice. But remember - the official support is already dead so if you like your phone to have "fresh" software, you'll have to look for something else.
IMHO the build quality is horrid!
It has a top left hand CPU heat issue, which will nullify it's waterproofing after a short term of use...
[emoji7]
This is the very reason Sony pulled the swimming pool advertising and have now said you should not swim with it. So how could it achieve its waterproof rating?
Sony downgraded the devices advertised Audio capabilities when upgraded to Lollipop, and at the same time changed Walkman app to Music app.
heat again.
Also the housing is bendable, do not put it in your jeans pocket... Needs an aluminium bumper...
If someone has one in perfect working conditions, he only used the calculator function and nothing else, lived in Siberia.
So buying this phone is a bit like playing Russian roulette
All the issues are related to heat...
No problem with the phone at all. Have it for half a year now. Battery: excellent. I use it for bike navigation. Yesterday screen on with navigation and geo tracking for more than 4.5 hours. No problemo!:good:
Dead touch screen, specially in the notification bar and navigation bar.
You need a dock to keep its waterproof. (This problem is fixed on Z5 compact).

Well, I doubt there are Z3 compacts out there without issues, simply because, as it was pointed out in previous replies, it has design flaws, and that's just obvious and undeniable. All of those with screen peeling off, had it in upper left corner, and to make things worse, it happened in first year of use, usually between 6 and 12 months of use, depending on the exposure to heat. I for example did not play any games on it, so it was not exposed to heat in that way, but during summer it was getting very hot easily, with minimal use, and even with no use, so after exactly 6 months it started to peel of (bought brand new). So for the dude up there who used it for 6 months without problems, one advice, from now on just be careful, it's bound to happen.
Next is the camera, which is not that good as it sounds on paper, mainly because Sony's software is crap, and based on some reports, lens quality is bad as well.
The frame can be bent easily, I was careless so now I have two white spots which are visible on black background.
On the good side though, the phone is quick and snappy, the battery life is excellent, it has a compact body (obviously ), it's beautiful. Battery life is averaging at 8h of SOT on MM with 1day 10h of standby, bit more on LP, and even more on KK, however difference is not big if you know how to setup your phone.
All that being said, I don't regret buying the phone, at the time there was no better package overall, at least for me. Now, however, I'd pick something that's not Sony.
Cirra92's write-up above is spot on...
Exactly correct!
Totally perfect review.
If your device is in good condition, means you only used the calculator function and nothing else, it never left your desk and you live in Siberia...
Forever and hereafter, I will always subconsciously believe that Sony owes me a refund...
Sony believing that not acknowledging it's defects and withholding truth of the fact, as business decision will actually cost more. The shareholders really need to realise this...
I also do not regret buying the phone, the best phone of it's type at the time of purchase.
[emoji7]
The design flaws have obviously been both detrimental to Sony's branding and has eroded any trust many owners have with the brand.
The screen has excellent contrast, noticeable to onlookers...
The specifications are still awesome, and I love the phone
[emoji7] [emoji7] [emoji7]
I know how much cost I have incurred repairing the device with 3 screen replacements, and that's exactly how much Sony is indebted to me...

Touch screen top area not responding issue. Claimed warranty, they changed the screen, but now my screen placement is not well aligned, the right side have a big gap compared to left. Thus, phone looks ugly and not waterproof.
I dont know why the replacement screen (i think) is smaller, thus it's highly possible become misaligned

I want a compact phone with long battery life and the only option seems to be the Z3 compact, on paper i love it, seems to be perfect, but what stops me from buying it are the build issues, seems the build quality on the z3c is crap, do people who had this phone for a long time WITHOUT issues exists?
Indoctrinate me, or not

consider the Iph*ne SE(Bad word on XDA ) or Xperia z5 compact(Both arent worth the price though).
It is impossible to get a good phone in a compact price point anymore. Even the latest X compact has a less powerful CPU. Its very sad how sony ditched us compact users in the dark. :crying:

I have my Z3c now for 1 1/2 years and had no major problems. The battery isn't as good anymore as it was and the speakers got very silent because i put it under water often.
Never had a cracked or peeling off screen. Got two friends with the same phone, none of them had ever such a problem.

True. I had an unresponsive notification tray area in less than 1 year. But they replaced the screen under warranty in less than a week

Touch screen top area not responding issue. Claimed warranty, they changed the screen, but now my screen placement is not well aligned, the right side have a big gap compared to left. Thus, phone looks ugly and not waterproof.
I dont know why the replacement screen (i think) is smaller, thus it's highly possible become misaligned

whoaaa, does it need one more replacement?
i've already made second replacement, and the contrast is horrible. I wonder what kinds of replacement screens it is and regarding the screen why it's seems common issues with z3c. :crying:

If I had the chance to buy again this phone or the iPhone SE, I'd go for the iPhone. My camera died suddenly :/ I've sent my phone 3 times to the service. Next time I'm moving to the Sony XZ or get an iPhone
@Robot76 I have had the Xperia Z3c for a full year now,I haven't had any screen issues or anything like that,I broke the screen once because it fell on the floor, but had nothing like screen peeling off or top part of the screen not working and so on
The only issues I have had were software issues and just slowness in general,I have tried every stock based MM ROM to keep a good camera, but EVERY SINGLE ONE was so f*cking slow,it would crash when I would have music playing,Messenger and Snapchat opem in the same time.
I am currently on AOSP 7.1.1(planning to go to Carbon ROM very soon) and it has been so fast! The only problem I have is when my phone gets hot it doesn't want to charge,I have to let it rest turned off and then charge it.
I just want to ask,do you have similar behavior on CM14.1?
