Wifi Weirdness - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When my Note 5 is connected to my home wifi, something very strange takes place. I lose the ability to program the Directv DVR for an extended time. Say I'm going to record a baseball game, and I want to extend the recording beyond it's scheduled time so I don't miss anything after a rain delay, etc.
If I attempt to schedule the recording with the extended time, it fails.
If I schedule it with no extended time, it works fine.
If I shut down wifi and schedule with extended time, while on cell data, it works fine.
No other phones or tablets in the house have this problem....
I can't figure out what setting in the Note 5 would affect this...
Any clues?

Auto send/receive while in sleep mode?

Is it just me or can this phone not do it?
On my iphone if I leave wifi on and turn the screen off, it will connect only when needed using the auto send/receive schedule.
My xperia no matter what i do just wont seem to send receive with auto send/receive set to 5 minutes, wifi enabled, and i turn screen off with power button (or even leave it automatic).
Does it work for anyone else or is this just the way the xperia works? It only sends/receives when it's awake, in which case, pretty stupid, cause i can just do it manually if i'm using it.
I think winmo only sends/receives over a cellular connection while the phone is asleep. Wifi on the other hand is disabled when the phone goes asleep in order to preserve battery life....so no sending or recieving emails over wifi with the device in sleep mode

That's really disappointing, it's a feature I had come to expect, thinking the device could atleast witch it on long enough to sync my email just like the iphone does before switching it off again.
guess my only option is to buy a data plan.
Try Advance config
Bottom right softkey "Menu" --> More Settings --> Connections --> Enable Wi-fi on standby mode

Thanks, I have just tried this, but I see that basically what it does is prevent the wifi from sleeping on standby mode, which is going to kill the wifi I presume in a couple of hours.
I guess it's just not possible for it to do what exactly I wanted it to do which is to connect and disconnect when required, to send and receive, while left switched on and the phone is in standby.
I believe that even when the phone is on and wifi is on I think the normal wifi power save (middle slider position) switches itself off after an idle period to save power when not in use, "on" just means available for use, not necessarily powered up.
I need this too, could someone try a mort-script or something to connect to WiFi automatically and then send/receive emails every desired set hours? Think it is possible..
Well
I tried enabling this (and yes, the wifi stays on while asleep) and putting my power save slider all the way to the right, however, after waiting the set time for my auto send/receive (5 minutes) and infact more, it did not send/receive until the moment I woke it, so I don't know if it was just about to do it, or if waking it caused the update.
i will give it another go and see how it goes, if you say that the wifi does infact just sleep itself when idle it shouldn't harm the battery life too much.
Strange
Ok, after further experimentation, I got it to send/receive my email while sleeping with the mode set for standby wifi enabled, however, with the refresh time setto 5 minutes, it took almost 15 minutes to update.
15 minutes is about the time I want, but will it take more power if I leave it on 5 minutes, or will it take even longer still if i set it to 15 minutes?
I'll try leaving my wifi on for a couple of days and see how it goes.
Try the program rk-OSR. It can connect/disconnect wi-fi automatically only for synchronizing e-mail.
Thanks

Thanks, I'm going to see how it fairs over the next couple of days with the wifi set to work during standby (in terms of battery life) and if that doesn't work out i'll take a look at the app.
I don't know what it is but i just have a phobia of running extra 3rd party software on a phone that can only just about handle itself.
You pretty much have to run 3rd party apps on WinMo. In my opinion it's like using a normal computer with windows without installing any other applications. It's barely usable for anything at all without getting really annoyed.

Yeh, but what annoys me is that my desktop computer is designed with the hardware to run its OS and a hell of a lot more, the hardware in this thing barely runs the naked OS, so I'm reluctant to add any more.
Anyway, after experiments it's been pretty much a total failure with the sleep wifi thing.
Looks like that 3rd party app will be my last resort, lets just hope it's unobtrusive and has litttle battery drain (aside from the obvious).
Failing that, it's either keep lugging around an iphone or get a data plan. Might sell the iphone to fund it.
You can't seriously consider using the iPhone for this. It's a toy.
I'm sure you'll be happy with rk-OSR.

You;re right, iPhone is a toy, but considering the problems I'm now having downloading email attachments (mp3) and the fact that it doesnt check my mail properly while sleeping, it seems almost worth carrying just to make sure I get my email without having to actively check for it.
I'll take your word though and try rk-OSR and hopefully find a solution to my attachment problem, then I'm a happy happy xperia owner in heaven.
Ok...but.
Ok, got rk-OSR installed and it is working perfectly if I use the "test" button. However, I put the device to sleep, set to sync in a couple of minutes, wait 5 or 6, wake it up myself and nothing. Even the log doesnt have anything after my test attempt. What could be the problem?
still wondering how to get the phone to do this... is it not possible for the phone to check emails while it's in your pocket? such a simple concept yet...
alias_neo and dinan, I found a solution!!! All you have to do is to install GProfile and this program called rk-OSR. You create a time-based profile (in GProfile) and choose a specific time (eg: 1am) to run rk-OSR. You don´t have to select anything else (wifi toggle, etc). Then you select the same time in rk-OSR (1 am) and in this program you select the wifi options. It worked for me.
Hope it helps you

3G data drain and repeated messages

I've had 2 problems with my G1, one of which for quite a while.
Starting off with the most severe and recent one, my phone has been randomly draining by data connection while I'm asleep. A couple of weeks ago, I woke up with my 3G turned off because I had reached my limit. As soon as I check my Netcounter, it seems like transfers up to 250MB had been made. But the phone was lying idle on my stand! I have no idea why this may happen and I believe I have a log that may have the problem included within.
As for my long lasting problem, my girlfriend has been complaining my phone sends her repeat message countless times, at random times. Sometimes 3 at a time, sometimes just 1.
I have no idea why this is happening either, but since I have free texts, I've been ignoring the problem so far.
Hope some of you can help me out with these.
Thanks!

For the first problem, hit menu->settings->accounts and sync -> turn off background data and autosync. Your phone automatically syncs your information with your google account, including gmail, contacts, calendar, market, etc. By turning this off your phone will no longer automatically update that, so make sure that you turn it on when using wifi every once in a while so you don't waste your data.
As for the second problem I have no idea, but I too noticed it does that sometimes.
Well, usually I'm not too concerned about data limits because my monthly limit is 300MB, more than acceptable for a phone, in my opinion. However, how can an idle phone sync text-based data up to a size of 250MB? It's like my phone was streaming a tv show to keep itself entertained until it had to ring the alarm!
It's happened again just now (a couple of minutes ago) and as soon as I get a USB cable, I'll transfer the log onto here. Hopefully someone can figure out the problem.

Then you must have installed an app which is using more data then you are aware of. Either try uninstalling unwanted apps or use an app that blocks internet access (I think one of them is droid firewall something, and I think autostarts does this too. check for yourself).

2 issues

I just noticed these issues today usage no different from the past weeks. 1st is I noticed battery drained really quickly with no indication. 2nd is music the equilizer would not work. Idk if the 2nd one deals with the whole ram management issue but it does come back and it's like it's turned half way down
Lots of threads in the forums re: battery drain. For me, my biggest hitters were (1) the stock email app sync and (2) wifi scanning.
I'd suggest going into stock email app settings if you use it and turn sync to manual long enouh to see if it has an impact and make sure your wifi's always allow scanning is unchecked. Then do some reading imto other causes people are niting.
oh, and android 101: shut off location when ur not using it.
Not sure about the EQ but I thought it only works with the stock music app.

Also, use an automation app such as Tasker to control syncing, wifi, etc.
Yea it didn't die on me today which is good. Will try that tasker
My biggest battery drain was with Google wallet, specifically the NFC Tap & Pay. It's almost as if the Wallet app gets an exclusive hold on the NFC radio & doesn't let go... Finally had to just turn off the NFC radio & the battery drain is much better. .
I have a 300mbps DL and 20+ upload and a 5ghz modem. My s5 has no problem showing 100-200mbps on the speed test app, but my s6 is barely hitting 80mbps. But in real life situations its less then 1mbps. There will be long periods of time for Pandora to load the next song without skipping as well as overall growing the internet is slow. I'm outside my 14 days so I'm hoping its a bug. And that damned screen rotation issue.... My battery has been stellar. But I don't text much or make too many calls from it.

Question WiFi Issues

Good day everyone, I'm having a really frustrating problem since I got my phone a month ago. I hope I can get some help here.
From day 1 I've had issues with network on my WiFi. No issues connecting to it, no issues using the internet, let me explain. I first noticed it on MIUI Themes. That was the first thing I went into after setting up my phone. It kept saying "can't connect to network". I figured it was a bug and will be fixed in the 12.5 update (spoiler alert: it didn't). Then I started to notice during setting up of my accounts, discord, reddit, etc. that the login was incredible slow the first time. It would just keep loading when I hit next. Not long after, I downloaded a game and it refused to update saying "can't connect to server". I had to start the process with my data then switch back to WiFi. For clarity, once I'm in the game itself there's no issues, the stability never drops, I never lag, etc.
It became truly evident it wasn't isolated incidents when I would open one of my online shopping apps. It loads the main screen instantly but when I switch the tab to see notifications, the page would load but the notifications would take up to 30 seconds to load. If I clicked on it, the next page would take another 30 seconds to load. Since I've used this app on my previous phone/ipad on the same WiFi I could tell there was something wrong. It should be instant. I opened up MI Community app and I kid you not, it must have taken me 10 - 15 minutes to create an account with all the loading/lag. Every single time I open the app, it takes at least 40 seconds to a minute to load with other pages lagging as well.
I started this long process of trying everything I could find that talks about it which was not much and usually about older phones. I tried everything I could find except factory reset (some have said it doesn't fix it after trying it themselves). I tried all the WiFi adjustments, traffic mode, off private DNS, developer mode options, and obviously reset networks/router/reboot multiple times.
After spending a couple of hours trying to find every mention of this whether it's Youtube, websites or Reddit and trying them (I would switch them back to default after testing the suggestions as they didn't work), my PC started giving WiFi problems. It NEVER gives problems but I figured maybe it was due to the turning on/off router multiple times. I was so frustrated, I was like, screw this I'm done.
I restarted my PC and switched to my PS4 (which runs on the same WiFi with no issues ever in 3 years). As my PS4 booted up, I picked up my phone to check the delivery status on my shopping app and BAAM! For the first time since I downloaded the app, my notifications appeared instantly like it should, the next page loaded immediately. I was like, hold up... I went into MI Community app and BOOM! it loaded immediately, I was shook. One final test, MIUI Themes that has never worked properly since day 1 with its constant "can't connect to network". BLAAM! Every page, instant, clean sweet speed. It felt like a whole new phone, like the new phone that I was supposed to feel all along.
I enjoyed a good 6 hours of bliss, constantly checking my shopping status just as an excuse to enjoy witnessing the speed. He giveth and then he taketh away and as luck would have it, there was a power outage midday. When the power was back on and the WiFi was up, we were back to the suffering. I tried to restart my PC as that was the key trigger and it worked for about a minute and then was the end of it. No amount of shutting down / restarting PC/router fixed it again.
There's something blocking the connection between my router and phone I believe. I figured the initial restart PC fix stopped the connection to the PC and gave the priority to my phone, if you will. That's rubbish I know because my WiFi runs on 4 other devices and never lags.
I'm no tech expert, in fact, I'm the opposite of that, it's embarrassing. I hope y'all can see something I'm unaware of and guide me. I'm certain the phone isn't defective and my WiFi is fine on every other device not to mention it ran flawlessly for 6 hours while other devices were also using the same WiFi.
If you've read this far, thank you very much. I apologize the post is very long, I wanted to get everything in so it paints a clear picture of the issue. I'll add a TLDR just incase.
TLDR: WiFi issues from day 1 in 2/3 of apps mostly with initial connections. 1 month later a chance restart of my PC fixed it. Power outage later that day, problem returned.

Question Anyone use the watch LTE on its own for running? Frustrating...

First of all, I really like my galaxy watch 5 pro. I often take my LTE version when I go running, connected to my Galaxy buds live. There are certain issues I have, which drive me bananas:
When it passes a marker (for example, every mile), it breaks up the music, briefly. Usually only for the first one or two markers. And then it reappears later, sometimes. Definitely an intermittent issue. It's like, it pauses and tries to figure out what it is supposed to do: the watch is like 'Do I pause,? do I stop the music? Do I act like there's a major blast of Wi-Fi in the area news connection?' it's like it has a conflict going on inside it.
Secondly even when I've got it on do not disturb, if someone phones me or there are certain kinds of messages that go to my phone, they still forward!! The worst is if somebody calls me, it stops the music! And it's almost impossible to stop the call while running! And I can't restart the music without really fiddling around with the watch, and that is really difficult to do without losing your pace.
It's not a great running watch in my opinion. Samsung needs to fix some things here.
Am I the only one? Maybe it's my watch.

A possible reason for the break in the music could be that you are switching between cell towers and there is possibly a gap in the signals, happens to me sometimes when driving down motorways. or maybe there is a setting somewhere to inform you when you reach these markers and its briefly trying to silently play another sound idk dont own the watch so cant really say what the problem is except for some general things it could be.
Secondly bugs bugs and more bugs, dislike them a lot myself lol
What fitness app are you using? I don't wear earbuds when running but Strava seems to work really well. A good fitness app will allow you to customize notifications. Maybe consider disabling wireless data when running.
It drives me bananas. I went on a run today. As it starts telling me my lap info, the music cuts out, the voice is a bit broken up, and then, when I'm in an area with trees, it must confuse the gps which makes the watch decide that I have 'lapped', and it starts giving me new lap times every 5 seconds!!! Makes it impossible to use with earbuds. MYne it is the combination of everything going on, and I admit it's a lot, data, voice ready, music to Bluetooth, gps, Samsung health app running etc... But they sell this as a WORKING solution, and it so often doesn't work properly (for me).

I just went for a 2 mile walk while listening to earbuds through the watch and Samsung Health was monitoring it and it worked perfectly.
Ok, I may have solved the issue. Will be testing it soon. I switched from Samsung to Google text so speech engine.
