Been a while, but wondering if there is any threads out there to manually update beyond OE2 without loosing root and tripping Knox. Last time i recall there was a way to change part of the OS but not the kernel to 5.11 but I'm more interested in 6.x and if anyone has figured it out.

Ok so many of us have successfully rooted our devices and frozen update and renamed security files to avoid losing our root.
What are the proper steps for Dummies like me to accept the Lollipop OTA in December without losing my data?
Also now 4.4.4 is anounced with Bluetooth fixes that I have noticed while streaming
(My gut tells me keep update frozen until a flashable rooted 5.0.)
It was said in another thread NOT to take the 5.0 update until a root method for it has been established. If you wanna keep root, I'd wait. I'm still running stock rooted AND3 firmware/kernel. I'm looking to get the newest update up to today (I think ANG3 or something of that nature.) I'm just not taking updates yet so I can keep my root. I'm having problems with the phone freezing and restarting though so I'd like an update.

NG3 is smooth

I am stock rooted with ANG3 pre-installed on my purchased S5. It runs smooth as silk if you use the method posted by muniz_ri in general. All I've done is turned off or frozen some bloatware and installed Chainfire SU 2.16.
My question was more geared towards the person who might want to go from rooted to the lastest OTA without losing data etc. I have been diving in pretty deep to the AT&T side of XDA since leaving sprint a week ago and I think the answer might have been posted by shortydoggg with the soft-bricked thread.
I was hoping someone might be able to tell me a non odin 3.09+ way to remove the freeze on my apps in the correct order to take the OTA without tripping KNOX if I wanted to do that knowing I might loose root.
I thought we might be able to follow muniz_ri and odin the one file back towelroot again after.
Basically I like stock always have, but I want root also for AdAway Titanium Backup Etc. and being a truck driver I wanted the 4.4.4 Bluetooth fix for Iheart radio.

It's hard to say what the best approach will be until the update arrives. In the case of 4.4.4, I'm rather confident that a somewhat simple method can be developed to take the update while keeping root. As for 5.0, I have some ideas none ideal but we'll see.
Is Android 4.4.4 for the AT&T version of the Galaxy S5 out? I have a Galaxy S5 AT&T phone but I don't have AT&T service. I am running Android 4.4.2 with build version ND3 is there something newer than this?
Updating to NG3
Het guys, so today I got ahold of Odin 3.09 and the NG3 update, I applied it through Odin in the AP slot and it DID NOT update my phone to NG3. My Baseband still says AND3 and kernel is 3.4.0-2178781
Tue Jul 22 13:58:46 KST 2014. Anybody have any options i can use without having to downgrade to NCE just to upgrade? LOL...Im kinda at a loss,Ive tried it in download mode twice now and no fu go.
Plz disregard my message. I'm good now and running rooted NG3.
Ok, so i googled a bit and do see that some people have had issues trying this, but most of the examples i was reading were on devices from carriers with locked bootloaders. Since the tmo version has an unloacked BL was wondering if anyone has tried this or not?
I was thinking of simply using flashify or twrp manager to install recovery from within my currently rooted (superuser) rom. Most people that have tried using locked bootloaders endup with a soft brick from what i have seen. Just not sure how much the unlocked bootloader would help us in this situation.
I know i can just use CF auto root but was trying to do it without tripping knox really. However, i have never had issues with any warranty through tmobile (rooted, tripped knox, whatever) and with the announcement of android pay, i am way less interested in samsung pay so tripped knox wouldnt be the end of the world... but still curious
EDIT: So apparently chainfire just released something called flashfire that appears it can do exactly what i am looking for. Anyone else looking for the same should check it out...

So, this will not trip knox? I'm currently stock waiting for the 5.1 update to see if it's worth it to keep stock or root my phone. I just want to root it so bad because I could hypothetically get double battery life with the tweaks I would do. I'm interested in Samsung Pay (sorta) but if Google Wallet/Android Pay will have the same functions, then IDC.

If you install recovery no matter what method it will trip. For Roms, Flashfire won't trip as long as you don't flash boot.img aka kernel. You need to remove it before flashing
Hi all, so I'm looking to root my new Galaxy S6 from AT&T. My current version is 5.0.2, but the kernel was built after May 15th, so the Ping Pong method is not supposed to work. My question is, will the CF-auto root method work, and if so which files should I download. A bit new to Samsung phones, thanks I have attached my info here.
When did you get the device? The OF3 firmware update, which you have, pushed out only a couple days ago.
I haven't been following the CF auto root thread closely, but I don't believe it will currently work on ATT due to the locked bootloader. I may be wrong though as things may have changed over the past couple months. You will very likely trip knox if it does work though.
As far as i know you can not root it for now. You gotta wait some more time i guess

I'm on the newest OTA of 5.1.1, and I want to root and don't really care about KNOX anymore. I just want to do so without wiping my phone or losing any data; custom ROMs are out of the question.
PignPong and Chainfire don't work for 5.1.1, the non-KNOX tripping solution breaks vital features, so I'm wondering if there is another way.
It seems like it is possible to update from the OE2 update to OF3 and still keep root on the ATT Galaxy S6, so I think it'd be possible to do the same for ATT Edge.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s6/general/g920aucu2aof3-flashfire-update-t3156221
Can anyone with more knowledge and expertise of the subject see if it's possible with our Edge devices?
I also found an S6 thread that showed success updating from OF3 to OF4 (i believe OF4 has that stagefright fix) while still keeping root.
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...920aucu2aof3-to-of4-flashfire-update-t3181135
I'm fairly certain it's possible, just don't have the knowledge to do it myself. I'm sure a lot of Edge users are not updating past OE2 because they want to keep root since you can't downgrade back to OE2.
Thanks for your input in advance!
