I just got a brand new out of the box stock captivate, sgh-i897, i897uckb2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, froyouckb2. I have the mobile ap in wireless settings, but when I click I get a message saying not allowed. How what is my least invasive option of turning this on without paying att a ridiculous plan premium? Can it be done without flashing a custom rom? I did that to a previous cappy and had constant problems. I am not very savy at all in these matters and just simply want the dumb guy how to make wireless tethering work for me.
You have to root first. then install Titanium backup from the market. Free version is fine.
Go into titanium where is says to restore apps and you will find a list of all the aps on your phone. delete tethering manager and you should be able to tether. The message saying you need a thethering plan will still be on the mobile AP page but it should work.
Just an FYI. AT&T is tracking ppl that are using Tethering without paying for tethering. They are starting to add the tethering charge to the bill, without telling, because they assume you have read the contract. They even have gone as far as dropping you out of the data connection plan.

It's hit or miss though. There are tons of people here that say they have tethered up to several gigs and have never gotten a notice. Most of them seem to think it is from iPhone cracks. Who really knows for sure...
I have tethered for quite a while now (since about 2009, even before my captivate, without the plan. I don't use it as much as those people, but do use it regularly, and have never been notified. I look at it like this: I don't think they will cancel a plan - they want our money. If they add thethring to my plan without telling me, I will just simply take it off. that's that.
edit:
and no, I'm not trying to rehash the whole tethering/plan argument. Just trying to let the OP know what I have read...

I found it to be. Don't forgot to use DEV mode.
The market no longer shows a 1 click root. Any suggestions on how to root otherwise?

grab the zip I uploaded. unzip it. run SuperOnneClick in the folder. Make sure your phone is on AND in debugging mode (in settings/apps/development)
click Rook, then, after that finishes, click Allow non market apps. may take a couple of times.
The version I attached is the only one I could get to successfully root stock 2.2
Let me know if you have problems.
edit: i corrected the path to debugging mode (above).
Hey, everyone.
I just bought an ATT Samsung Focus S i937 off of eBay. It was locked when I received it, so I plunked down 25 bucks and unlocked it. I'm using it on Telus and so far all is well, except for WiFi connection sharing/tethering.
When I try to enable internet sharing, I get a message saying "Connection not shared. To enable tethering on this device go to (ATT's website) or dial 611."
Basically, it sounds like I need to have an ATT tethering plan to enable this on my phone, but since I'm not an ATT customer, there's not mch I can do.
I was wondering if there is a workaround for this. Please let me know!
Thanks,
Taylor

firstly DO NOT INSTALL THE SAMSUNG UPDATE!! and if updating the OSan have it unlocked already read This Website and use the relock prevent + edit your hosts file
Absolutely back up your device at every stage using This Guide
So follow these steps
unlock the device Here follow the instructions which includes installing the diagnostic tool and install XAP deployer or XAP handler Here or Here With the XAP file deployer in the WP7 SDK
Then install WP7 Root Tools Here
Then install WP Bazaar market Here
Open Root Tools, and give Bazaar higher level privileges
Find WinTT on the Bazaar market and install it
Open Root Tools, and give WinTT higher level privileges
you may need to restart to get WinTT working
go through WinTT and turn on ICS
Done
Wow thanks.
That's very complete. One questions though... I didn't mention this, but I am a registered WP7 dev and can unlock this device using my dev access. Can I load any of the XAPs directly instead of having to crack my phone?
Thanks,
Taylor
Yeah, you have limited access to installing xaps, but you will still need to interop unlock and use root tools to give higher level access to WinTT, so your best starting from scratch,

I have purchased an Samsung Focus S i937 locked to AT&T. I have purchased an unlock code and have successfully unlocked my phone. Im also unable to use the Internet Sharing feature of my phone. Firstly, I am not a technical guy hence im unable to understand the process stated by you. Secondly, I wanted to find out that does following the process given by you, expose my device to get BRICKED as I am able to understand that involved a JAIL BREAK of the device. Does it have any other side effects.? Like effecting the radio signals or any other such problem.
Thanks

ok, first things first.
You won't brick your device, at worst a hardrest all remove all changes you can do, our device, the focus S, isn't fully unlocked, so there are limitations to the amount of damage you can do by arseing it up. With that behind us you have to learn what you are about to do, there isn't a simple way.
So, start by knowing these basics, then read through the guide, any bits you don't understand feel free to ask.
1, AT&T locked your internet connection sharing, so you must re enable that
2, To enable ICS, you must make changes to the registry
3, Microsoft locked you out of making changes to the registry, so you must gain access to do it
4, AT&T left a security hole allowing us to make changes to allow us to change things like registry
5, using that hole we can install software that will give us more access, that software can then allow us to remove the AT&T lock on ics
These things you must do, there is no magic answer, there has been some short cuts made but this in some cases has had a negative effect, such as losing 3g, doing as I said will not have any effect on your signal or anything else

Have you guys noticed any of the following....
issues after the above procedures were applied (a big thanks to all the brainiacs who know how to hack this stuff):
Slowed Internet Connection
Lower Strength of GPS Signal
Less accuracy and trouble sometime finding location
Less accuracy while using maps because of the above statement
Not complaining, just curious. Thanks to all.:good:

theres nothing in the code that should have done that, the XML import only fiddles with interop unlock
im not 100% sure what WTT changes but I know the entries it should be fiddling with and shouldnt make any difference, although its been suggested the ICS code does mess with the 3G signal ive not heard anything at all to suggest that it effects GPS as well.
See This Thread for details, ive copied the relevant bits here but all thanks should go to those on the original thread
Option 1
---- 11.3. If your device is not locked to a specific operator, you can use the Samsung Network Profile app (for 1st generation) or Wireless Manager (for 2nd generation)
-------- 11.3.1. Uninstall the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
-------- 11.3.2. Download and install the latest version of the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app from the Marketplace.
-------- 11.3.3. Open the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
-------- 11.3.4. Select a different Network Operator.
-------- 11.3.5. Now Select your own Network Operator again.
-------- 11.3.6. Exit the Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
Option 2
Resolve Samsung connection problems
A lot of Samsung owners have complained here about connection problems. They blamed Interop Unlock, but apparently this has more to do with enabling "Internet Connection Sharing" than with "Interop Unlock". You should be able to recover the connection, apply this:
1. Start Diagnosis App> *#32489# ***DOES NOT WORK ON i937***
2. Tap "Back" 2 times to go back to Phone Control
3. Choose: [7] Network Control
4. Choose: [1] GFC
5. Choose: [3] Setting Cancellation
Wait for it to say success, then reboot.
GPS is a completely passive function, I don't have a problem with this, HSDPA may have issues for reasons unknown but using this method doesn't effect mine, perhaps its carrier specific..

If you have updated the OS and NOT the samsung firmware then reapply the windows break interop unlock, be sure to keep it off the inernet by disabling all coms and then apply the relock prevent xap. if you have applied the Samsung firmware and didn't have it already unlocked or you didn't have a back up, your screwed

First of all I just want to say thanks that you're trying to help me, but I just didn't understand many things u said, I'm not really into technical stuff, but I'll tell you what info I have, in hope of u helping me better.
I don't live in the US and I bought the phone from ebay and it was unlocked and it works perfectly over 2 carriers here in my country, and I have never encountered any problems with it except for the internet sharing feature.
And about 3 months ago the phone notified my to a system upgrade from version 7.10.7740 to version 7.10.8107 then immediatly to version 7.10.8773.98. now I'm guessing these are OS firmwares not samsung software.
but I've noticed something, when I setup my phone for the first time I used a US hotmail account but before I connect to the internet the ICS feature worked, but once I signed in it gave me the dial 611 or go to att.com/mywireless message.
So I am guessing if I restore the device and sign in with a non US hotmail account may result in the feature to be unlocked. The only thing keeping me from trying this because I'll have to redownload all my apps again and reorganize my contacts again. if there's a way to avoid that or someone has tried it please do tell.
Again thanks for your reply.

im afraid to say your firmware is locked,
2103.11.10.1 is unlock-able, im pretty sure anything from xxxx.12.xx.x upwards is locked down solid
I don't suppose you made a backup? if you haven't then there is nothing you can do
the Samsung firmware update was released as a separate update at the same time as the tango 8773 build, it tried to install on mine after the 8773 build

I'm really sorry for the late reply, was busy at work. but during that time I might have found a "Glitch" or a workaround to enable it and I have tested it many times and it works.
Well there are two ways:
1st one which is a sure thing:
1) Turn off the phone, then turn on again.
2) Once the phone is turned on, immediately go to settings>internet sharing and turn it on and BOOM there you go
* I have tried this method over a dozen times and it works every single time
** The point here is that you have to enable it immediately after the phone is turned on, I think it happens because the phone doesn't have enough time to send the info. to the servers to know that it's not enabled by default.
2nd one which was succesful over 75% of the time:
1) Go to Settings>cellular>Turn Off, Wait like 5-10 seconds and turn on again.
2) Go to Internet sharing> Turn on, and enjoy :fingers-crossed:
***I don't know why do they work or how, may be it's a Glitch like I said before but the point is they do work
I hope that I've helped someone out there and Thanks to everyone who tried to help me

nice find, ICS is disabled locally only, it doesn't have anything to send, the only thing I can think of that makes sense is that the service hasn't been initialised and doesn't call the reg entries that disables ICS, by turning it on manually ASAP it perhaps catches it out. if you enable it, then disable it, can you still enable it again in that session or do you need to restart?

Well I tried that, but there is no definite answer to it, sometimes I turn it on and off on and off many times without needing to restart and throughout the whole day, and sometimes it works once and doesn't at the second try. So it all comes down to luck, but still better than nothing
Now the thing is I'm afraid that when the 7.8 update comes, they would fix this glitch =D Haha.

Tasker won't switch your lte on and off with the stock Rom, but it will control WiFi and Bluetooth, and you will be able to set up a location based profile to do it automatically.

Okay, I have been looking over Tasker, it does so much it quickly intimitades new users like me lol. Thanks that answers my question and I appreciate your post.
I had the same problem with Tasker. Even with some of the tutorials, they steps they used must have been for an older version as they didn't even match what I was seeing on the screen.
If you want to try a much simpler interface try out Locale. Its the same concept, but the interface is a LOT easier to understand for newcomers. I have mine set using location to turn on WiFi/off BT/set ringers to 10% volume/check into FourSquare when I get to work, turn on BT/off WiFi/Open Google Listen & GasBuddy when I get in the car and such. Most of the plug-ins you can use with Tasker can also be used with Locale too.
However, I suspect what you are wanting to do would require a plug-in as it is a sort of advanced procedure but maybe if you find some app that will allow turning off 4G, you could at least have it open the app or toggle to turn it on and off as you leave home - if you can't have it happen automatically.

My understanding is that Google, since Jelly Bean, has pulled the API's for turning off radios and GPS (just as they have with battery stats in 4.4) in the interest of more secure devices. So without root, and in some cases something other than the stock rom, programmatical access to these settings is no longer possible.

Okay, that may be part of my trouble no root yet. This is the first phone I have not rooted since coming to android. I probably should have gotten the Dev Moto but I was stubborn and wanted to pick my design:silly:
Tasker should be able to do some of what you need, but as others have mentioned you will at the very least need root to get it working.

On the stock Moto X (XT-1053) you can turn GPS on/off via Tasker without root or using Secure Settings. It was a delight to see this, and not get the GPS nag screens I've previously gotten on a SGS3 (Verizon). Would have to play around, but you might be able to execute an activity or shortcut in Tasker that brings up the settings screen where you can choose 2G data and then script a screen tap in just the right place. Essentially automating the actions you'd take doing it manually. Not as pretty as a direct setting, but Tasker can execute this kind of thing very fast so it's of little bother to see it flash by on your screen.

OK - Just made a task which turns on GPS waits several seconds and turns it off. Verified it was actually on/off when it said it was on. I'm running 4.2.2. My son "upgraded" to 4.4 on his Moto X, and Tasker GPS manipulation doesn't work on his. I didn't root, and verified as much with root checker, so it seems this is an "upgraded" feature in 4.4.
I'd consider rooting, but do like some of the Moto rom features so don't really want to move to an alternate rom & not wild about losing warranty. Maybe a little off topic, but if you root 4.2.2 and latter upgrade to some 4.4.x release, will you end up losing root?

Off topic for here but a quick question. Would this be a good root quide to use. It seems pretty straightforward to understand and do. http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/11/root-motorola-moto-x-running-android-4-4-kitkat/ That site has been around and I think it is reputable but wanted to check.
Dunno, but I am not sure you're gonna be able to toggle LTE even if rooted. At least the description of Secure Settings suggests you can't without a custom rom.
If you turn off mobile data, does that solve your incoming call issue?
Just read that Three is discontinuing it's WiFi calling app as most phones have this as standard now. I have no reception in my flat so this has been a lifesaver. I have figured out how to activate the volte and WiFi calling toggles but only the volte seems to work (I get an icon when on 4g). Has anyone been able to get this to work on any UK network?

Any LOS/Based ROM should work.
Thanks. I had a look on the other thread and couldn't see WiFi calling as an option despite being able to toggle it on. Can't remember what code I used.

If it doesn't show as 'Provisioned' under the *#*#4636#*#* menu, it's not available. You're using OOS, right? I'm not sure there's any method to force the issue. Maybe a Magisk module?
Or start using Custom ROMs?

I'm using OOS Oreo. I'm trying to remember what I did to get the toggles under sim preferences. Before then I didn't even have the toggles
Is this operator dependent or phone software. No idea how to add a module but should be able to figure that out.

Adding the Toggles to Settings is the easy bit. It doesn't mean a thing as far as getting the functions working though. The ROM, and specifically the telephony parts of it, need to have all the necessary code added. We know that 3 can add the bits needed on phones where they have control over the software updates. Otherwise it's down to the Manufacturer/ROM.
You never know, OOS Pie might have this working natively. You could ask in the Community Beta thread to see if anyone there has any idea. Or wait a while longer until OOS Pie is in Stable channel. (I assume you don't want to try the Community Beta?)

I might download it when I get back from my holiday. Don't want to mess with my phone when traveling.
I'm very much a novice when it comes to ROMs etc.
Downloaded the community build but no joy. No sign of wifi calling working.

I'm not surprised. I doubt it's high on their list of priorities. Especially as a lot of this stuff is carrier specific. They probably expect the carriers themselves to add the necessary modifications before the units get into the hands of customers, which is what happens most of the time. Except, Oneplus phones are usually bought off contract as nobody here offers them with contracts.

The provision toggle shows up now when I am back in the UK. Might try to install lineage to see if it helps.
Did you end up getting this to work on lineage? I'm having the same problem and the three in touch app has just stopped working for me.
This is on a op3 (not t)

Haven't gotten around rooting and installing it. I have volte in most of the flat so the phone kinds works at home.
Fair enough, thanks for the reply. If I end up getting it working I'll report back
Tried to figure out how to instal lineage on my phone but I got stranded after installing ADB on my laptop. My problem is that most of the guides assumes that you know what you are doing in minute detail and therefore leave out quite a lot of steps. It also seems like you will lose all your data which means you need to back it up and to back it up you need to root the device which whips the data... Installing twrp seems also to wipe your data which is a bummer as you need that to do the backup of your phone.
As you can see I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't
Tried today to install lineage and I cannot say I'm impressed with the various guides I found. The lineage os wiki page omitted various steps such as which entry you needed to edit in the environment variables. There are several to choose from. Nor did it not mention that you need to enable unlocking the bootloader. Had to Google that to figure out how to get around that error
Installing twrp didn't work as it didn't recognise the file. Tried three different workarounds that didn't work. (File extension, dropping the twrp image onto the command window after typing the fastboot flash recovery line and moving the image to the desktop and the ADB folder.
Why do the people who write these guides assume you have extensive knowledge of installing ROMs instead of including all necessary steps. Needless to say, I failed to install lineage.
Rant over.

Any success? I have finally got lineage 16 on my phone but not been able to get WiFi calling working
No, ended up getting a new phone unfortunately.
This is an update of this module, which hasn't been updated since Magisk v10. Additionally, I've disabled connection to the dun APN, making it appear as normal data. I'm intending to add TTL fixing in my next update.
Hi,
Okay, so I downloaded it and went into Magisk 19.3 >> Modules >> + >> Browse
I went to it, tapped on the Zip and it just showed me what was in the Zip. It didn't grab it to install it like it normally does.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thx

Make sure that you click the ZIP and click the button that says "Select" that should be at the top. That's my experience with Q on a Pixel 2 at least, but it's worth trying.

Thank you for your response. Once I tap the file, it immediately shows me what's in it, like if you were using a Zip tool and selected "Open" instead of "Extract". I know I'm not supposed to extract it. I'm just relating an example of what I see happen.
I used (I believe it's called "Documents" for some weird reason) Android's built in file selector, like when you're granting access to your Ext SD. That one.
Thx

Hi,
Okay, I got it installed. Long-Tap, then tap "Open".
But I didn't even bother to ask how to use it. It doesn't install an app, which is how I'm used to, um, "make it look otherwise".
Is it found in my phones' Settings?
Am I safe in assuming it'll work with my;
LG V20 (H910A) -- Android Nougat 7.0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can follow instructions, no problem.
Thx!

FYI,
Aftering installing the Module, in my phone's…
SETTINGS >> TETHERING
… it is now as follows;
USB Tethering = Grayed Out
Mobile HotSpot = Off (can be enabled)
BlueTooth Tethering (can be enabled)
Thx

So it did finally install? If so, it should be working. USB Tethering works when you have your phone connected to a PC with a USB cable.

Yes, I did get it installed (see previous message), thank you.
Also, just FYI, I do understand about BT & USB. But I never use those for Tethering. What I'm used to doing (with an app) is to run the app and then it uses the phone's WiFi, but makes it like a Router and broadcasts out an SSID and others see that and using the Password that I set in the app, others can connect to my phone to use the Internet.
Would that still be considered "Tethering"? Or would that fall under "Mobile HotSpot"?
If the latter, then I assume that I would just go into my phone's Settings and Enable it?
If that's the case, did I read correctly that your Module makes it look like Mobile Data to the Carrier instead of Tethering/HotSpot?
Thx!
Posted from my way cool LG V20 (H910) Nougat 7.0
Tethering and Mobile Hotspot are essentially the same, and yes, you should be able to use the one in Settings for that. And yes, it should hide it from the carrier unless they are doing checks on the TTL, which is what I'm working on next.
Hi,
Okay, so theoretically, I just go into my Settings and Enable "Mobile HotSpot" and my phone will become a connection for others to connect to via their WiFi?
Assuming yes, but how would they know what SSID to look for and what Password to use?
I.e., all I see is a switch to turn "Mobile HotSpot" on. I don't see anywhere to set those things up and I certainly don't want to be wide open for anyone to connect.
Thank you for all your help! It really is very much appreciated! And just FYI, I have understood everything you've said so far.
Thx!

If you click on Mobile Hotspot (not just the toggle) it should take you to a menu where you can configure the SSID and password.

Way Cool, dude!
I'll try it tonight when my wife gets home, or in the morning and let you know how it goes.
Is there any way to confirm it's being seen as Mobile Data by my Carrier?
Let me explain that it's not that my Carrier doesn't allow Tethering. They just limit it to a small amount and then you have to pay for "X" amount (plans).
So as you can tell, I obviously don't want the Tethering I do to be seen as Tethering.
Thx
Posted from my way cool LG V20 (H910) Nougat 7.0
I'm not going to personally confirm whether it'll be seen as mobile data or tethering, as some carriers do nasty tricks such as checking the TTL of packets to see whether or not it's tethered, but for most carriers, it should work fine.

It should, though I'm not sure how long that'll take. It requires a kernel module as far as I can tell, and there are solutions for some devices out there already. However, this is very dependent on the kernel installed, and Android doesn't have a system like DKMS. So I'm looking for a solution to that.

I'm able to tether with this, but I have no internet access. I also noticed that if I USB tether I get no internet access. Would this be an example of the carrier doing tricks to prevent it? FWIW I'm running a moto G6 on consumer cellular (which makes use of at&t's network).
I have installed this lastest module, I can bypass carrier lock and device can connect but no Internet. If I look at the device I am hotspotting from it shows 0 devices connect. I am running a rooted Pixel XL with 9.0 pixel dust rom and Magisk 19.3

what is your current phone's kernel that run the module successfully? would it works on LOS kernel?
and does your internet phone works normally while another device use the tethering from it, too?

That's not the carrier doing anything weird. That's just your phone being weird afaict.

EX Kernel includes the patches for it, and if there's enough interest, I can upload a build that enables it on EX Kernel only for the moment. And yes, my phone's internet works fine while another device is tethering. Your phone is essentially acting as a router when tethering.

No, it won't "just work" on the LOS kernel. Tell them to include the module "xt_HL.ko" for all devices (the kernel module for the iptables mangle table) and it will. Until they do or I find a generic way to get it working, EX is the only kernel I can reasonably support.
