So I have reviewed the excellent threads on unlocking, installing TWRP and rooting the Mi Mix.
Including these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/help/to-getting-mi-mix-t3504613
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/guide-flash-global-china-rom-root-gapps-t3510592
I've also reviewed http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/development/recovery-official-twrp-xiaomi-mi-mix-t3498960
The problem I can't get around is frozen screen TWRP. I assume I have a TWRP/ROM mismatch as I have no issues with Minimal FB/ADB and actually flashing TWRP. But no combination that I have tried has given me working TWRP.
Any advice or recommendations would be vastly appreciated.
Just to be clear, I have unlocked the boot loader, I have Developer mode and USB Debugging activated. I have tried this with the most recent CN Stable (8.0.11.0) and CN DEV (6.12.8) ROMs and I have tried both TWRP 3.0.2 AND 3.0.2-RC1
Frustrated as this device is near perfect, I just need to get rid of the crapware and make a few Root requiring tweaks
Thanks

If you're on the latest EU ROM (weekly updates),you need the latest (EU) TWRP RC2 (link is in the OP) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/development/recovery-official-twrp-xiaomi-mi-mix-t3498960
Read the entire thread if need be,you'll see myself & others had the frozen TWRP on the Dec2 EU ROM (weekly) update & it was remedied by the RC2 update to (EU) twrp
If you're running anything else,IDK,I switched to the EU ROM ASAP & haven't looked back,it's gonna be my daily driver until CM 13/14 (hopefully) becomes available.

Thank you brother. I saw you posts when you mentioned having the same problem. Unfortunately I'm having this issue on the CN Stable ROM. Can I install the EU Weekly through the Installer app on the MIX? Or do I have to use the MIFlash tool?
Thanks

@RMXO had a similar issue when stuck w/an unresponsive TWRP & managed to get his phone/TWRP functional again before @jcadduono updated the EU TWRP.
Take a look at @RMXO's posts in that thread on how he got back to a working TWRP.

I'm starting to wonder of the current CN Stable TWRP is unable to work with 8.0.11.0 much like the problem you had and RMXO had with the last EU release. I had backup of the stable CN ROM that works for me for now, but I'd really like to get Adaway and Titanium Backup working
Best

I had China stable 8.0.11.0 and I managed to get it working, you need to use built-in updater and download EU rom manually and put it in your device. Then use the updater to update. I had to do it twice as first time i still got China stuffs which i didn't wipe. So if you have problem, update it once to EU, then wipe/factory reset the phone and flash again to make sure it's all clean.
A good indicator of success will be google play store, after flashing EU rom, if you don't see google play store, it means you have to wipe and flash again.

I tried to manually install the EU Rom (xiaomi.eu_multi_MIMix_6.12.8_v8-6.0.zip) through the Installer and I received a "can't verify" error. Is this the EU ROM you mean? If so did you have to do anything special to get it to flash?
Thanks

I've used nothing but TWRP to install ROMs on this device, once for the initial switch from the Global (vendor) ROM to the EU (weekly) ROM & twice to update the EU ROM.
FWIW,my MIX was bootloader unlocked out of the box.

As title. I've tried like 5 different TWRP versions linked from all over the Mi 8 forums and none have worked for me. Any and all versions have made the ROM unable to boot, every restart will load recovery instead and I have to flash stock boot to get the ROM to work. Bootloader unlocked, ROM rooted by having Magisk create a patched boot cos every other way also failed.
I'm also looking for it.

Currently https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-3-0-mi-8-t3837745 this version working but you've to format all of your data then flash your rom. I know its not the standard solution and even I'm waiting for official TWRP for our beloved Mi 8.
You need to choose Format Data first, Reboot again to Recovery, and then flash the DM Verity and Encryption Disabler.
After that, you can go ahead to flash any ROM you like.

Believe me, it worth the efforts! It would be much better than staying with crappy MIUI 10 Global Stable.
Currently, I'm with MIUI EU 10.0.6.0 Stable and I don't want to go back to stock MIUI Stable, just don't forget to install Magisk 17.2 for root access, replace the GPS.conf with your preferred country server URL (I believed it should be Malaysia) - look for a thread by @RainGater for the complete walkthrough - and although it is not necessary, it would be better to edit the default Xiaomi EU build.prop to change the region to match your country (by default it is set to Romania or some EU country, I forgot)

I don't actually have a problem with my ROM. My GPS works fine, and I've already gotten root on my stock Global. Right now in my journey with Android which started with the HTC Desire Z, I don't need a custom ROM, I just need root for the occasional app that needs it I do have root now, but would love TWRP too so I can make full backups. Will check out your links regardless, thanks!
My new MI8 SE is not my daily use, so I got time to check all available MIUI custom rom (eu,Globe,MiRum,Miuipro,Ros,MS and Masik 1.8.)
At this point no problem, they install very well and they answer my needs.
BUT:
AS EVERYBODY should know that it is very easy to delete the central Password and finger print by the mean of our sophisticated tool (I mean TWRP).
In order to be safe '(without turning back to stock rom) I tried to encrypt the phone WITHOUT success...
Process failed every time with different results (full reset, logo loop for hours, partial encrypt for data only). But was always the point that minimum security can't be reached!
Question:
-Can you well sleep If you mind that you are having all your precious data available in the wind as soon your phone is lost or stolen or even worst let in some bad friends hands...? It takes 1 mn to delete the file without any computer.
I see a partial solution by installing afterward a stock recovery that does allow to trick the system file.
(If somebody has it, I am available to test this option, but don't tell me to flash a stock rom as solution!!)
Your comments/solutions are welcome.
You can have encryption with custom ROM, if the corresponding kernel enabled built-in force encryption.
I'm currently running phh treble 9.0 encrypted, with stock kernel patched by this script:

Thanks for taking care of my post.
This is old now.
I've investigated a bit more and found ways to get MIUI custom ROM encrypted. (for now I want to stay with MIUI stuff!)
I know that almost all AOSP like rom may well encrypt from first install.
My aim was and is still to warn people that without encrypt their phone are open like a lost book.
Thanks for the very interesting and documented thread (link) you directed me to.

Just take care to flash latest 1227 version after EU rom older than 8.12.20 date.
In my view it's a mistake to backup anything with TWRP because as of today nothing is stable. Better to stay with MIUI backup and computer duplication.

That's OK!
you flash 9.2.15 with TWRP 1102 or 1217.
YOU DON't REBOOT THE ROM.
you flash twrp 1227 and THEN you reboot the rom and wait install finish, take some time be partient.
simple!

Finally i got it working following your instructions on the MIUI EU forum. Thanks a bunch. :victory: :highfive:
To others for reference. Following are the procedures that i followed to boot up Miui Eu :silly:
- Flash official 8.12.13 (Dev Fastboot Rom) through MiFlash.
- Flash TWRP 1102
- Clean Data
- Push/ Copy and Flash 8.12.20( EU Rom), it booted up finally without redirecting to Fastboot.
- Update 8.12.20 to latest available from system updater.
- Now there won't be any recovery or we aren't able to enter into available recovery even though the system boots.
- Flash TWRP 1227.
Hello, I'm new to the Xiaomi world and I still have trouble understanding some terms ...
I am currently waiting for the necessary 168 hours before I can unlock my bootloader.
I would like to know what are the differences between orangefox and twrp, which one to choose?
What are the differences between global and eu?
I think I'm in global because I'm in 10.3.2.0
If I root my phone will I be able to update without removing everything?
Thank you in advance.

TWRP is very customisable and as such there are many different versions. Orange Fox is just a very heavily customised version of TWRP. It has a number of additional features over vanilla TWRP, some of which are specific to Xiaomi devices. However there are other versions of TWRP that also have been customised with additional features that are Xiaomi specific, it's just that these other versions are still very much recognisable as a version of TWRP as they keep the same UI design.
I don't think anyone is really sure what differences, if any, there are between the global and EU ROMs, at least from a functionality point of view. It might just be ad delivery and data collection differences, due to the EU having stricter laws around data protection and such things.
If you root you won't be able to use OTA. If you do you will lose root. You will need to manually update by installing the latest recovery ROM followed by Magisk again. (I assume that will be your root solution)
Just use either recovery for now. The only difference is the interface imo. F2fs support is still bad in recovery.
Use miui.eu, it's the same but stripped down and without ads.
Sure, as long as it's a compatible update.

I do recommend you backup your Android 9 partitions before flashing. I wiped and installed 10 and cannot go back.
Thank you guys for the infos, I think I'll go with classic TWRP and install the xiaomi.eu rom and then for the root I would reinstall it with each update this is not a problem
Orangefox has the ability to surviving OTA updates if prepared well.

If you go with the xiaomi.eu ROM then Magisk will automatically install itself when you update.
Cool Thanks.
And for the TWRP the best actually is the unofficial one from @mauronofrio or there is an official for android p ? Is the last on twrp.me will work ? Thanks

If Magisk is a rooting solution, and if Xiaomi.eu ROM installs Magisk automatically, does it mean If I install Xiaomi.eu ROM, I have no other choice but to root my phone, therefore I won't be able to use OTA updates and will have to update manually each time there is a new ROM ?

No.
Magisk will automatically install itself if you have already installed it.
This is common behaviour for things like Magisk and GApps. If they've been installed on a custom ROM, they will automatically reinstall themselves when you update that ROM.
Xiaomi.eu does not come with Magisk pre-installed.
You are also confusing OTA updating a rooted phone with an official ROM and with a Xiaomi.eu ROM.
Xiaomi.eu is a custom ROM and so updating it is more like other typical custom ROMs.
Hi all.
I've just bought this device. When I first launched it, it was on miui9, i updated to miui 10 stable 10.0.3.0 (8.1 Android) via ota. Then, I saw that I could also upgrade to miui 11. However, I've read that battery is worse than Miui 10 so I don't know If I should install it.
I've unlocked the recovery because I want to try some custom roms but I'm a bit scared of the anti-rollback.
Could you please tell me what should I do?
Thanks all.
Before you do anything you need to figure out which device you own. You bought it and you already unlocked the bootloader? That generally takes 360 hours, are you sure it wasn't already unlocked? If it was unlocked you probably have a Chinese device, and in that case be extremely careful about not relocking the bootloader. if the phone is not bound to your account ( linked to you personally) then you could brick it and have no recourse.
if you unlocked it yourself and you have a locked device , then don't worry about anti-rollback. So far it has not been implemented. Next, you heard wrong about Miui 11, its battery is equally as good. Although the best version of Miui and currently the most stable Android 10 overall is Xiaomi.EU which is a custom rom based on the china beta but globalised, with Google services.
Again do your homework, avoid extremely old posts that are no longer relevant. Never attempting upgrading your screen refresh and never flash someone else's persist image and you will be good. This community has tons of infor...read a lot and take your own notes.

Hi Thanks for your reply.
My device is global version (not just global ROM, I do know the difference)
I am unlocked the bootloader using the Xiaomi official tool, i had to activate the developer tools on the device and check the bootloader status and the button which was there ( U know what I mean). Besides, when I turn on the device it says unlocked.
I've read that miui 11 has kinda bad sot because of miui and/or the bug with WhatsApp. So I don't know if I have to update via ota and If I do that I don't know if I will have any problems while trying to install a custom ROM.
I've had a Xiaomi before so I know that I shouldn't install strange zips.
Thank you

Yes, the last build of Xiaomi.EU had worse SOT than usual ( about 5 hours. However, the issue was only with one of the weekly builds) I personally resolved that issue for myself by flashing the kernel from the previous build. Also, Xiaomi.EU is updated every Thursday so later today there will be a new build that will very likely resolve the issue. On the other hand the stable builds do not have an issue with SOT. At least not in my experience. I have averaged around 8 to 9 hours SOT.
I don't use Whatsapp, so I can't help you with that.
Since you were previously on stock you will need to backup your data, if you are still using stock, backup to MiCloud as well. This way if you use a Miui based rom you can quickly restored most of your data and partial settings. You will also need to format use storage (type yes, reboot to recovery)

I've just updated to miui 11 stable via ota.
BTW, Is TWRP the best recovery for this device isn't it? I've read that exist other types of recovery (not CWM but someones).
And my last question, I cannot find which version of gcam fits on miui 11 (Android Pie). Is there any thread, telegram channel?
Thanks for all.

BTW, Is TWRP the best recovery for this device isn't it? I've read that exist other types of recovery (not CWM but someones).
And my last question, I cannot find which version of gcam fits on miui 11 (Android Pie). Is there any thread, telegram channel?
Thanks for all.

Personally I use the TWRP that I posted here : I talked to a few friends / android developers on other devices and several of them believe that this a TWRP issue.
I have not had any more of these issues since using this TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80952013&postcount=121
If using AOSP, you should use the official version.
The best Gcam ( I Think is by Sanity )
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-san1ty/
FYI the builds made for the Poco F1 and Razer 2 are also compatible.

Thank for helping me.
As I've posted in the official twrp thread, I was able to install twrp and get to it but after power off the phone and try to get there again miui recovery was there instead.
I've installed the last build of twrp 3.3.1.1.
Maybe If I install magisk via TWRP I will have twrp *forever*.(?)
Thank you man

No problem.
After installing TWRP, you must initially install Root and then reboot to recovery.
Often you will see a message asking if you want to install the TWRP manager, click those boxes and then proceed to rebooting to recovery.
If you are using the full stock Rom, you must have root, so anytime that you flash the official Global stable rom, or an update, flash root again...unless you see via the Recovery terminal that Root maintained it's persistence.

Hi! I buyed a CN version of Mi 11. Is there any link with the official Global rom for Mi 11 that was rleased today ? Any tutorial?
Thanks!
As far as I know, the Mi 11 Global version won't be available before February 25th (at least here in Europe), so I doubt the global ROM is available yet. Most people recommend the xiaomi.eu ROM over the global ROM because it has some extra features and so on.
I recommend you use Xiaomi.eu's ROM, there's a thread explaining how to do it here. Also, don't forget to unlock your bootloader - you need to wait 7 days before it can be unlocked, so if you start the process today, you'll be able to flash custom ROMs in a week.

Thanks guys!

Installation ok for me. Like u i was on xiaomi.eu lastest. there is a smalll error : This error is caused because the tool verifies if the device’s bootloader has been locked or not. Since you used the ‘clean all’ or ‘save user data’ option, the bootloader is not locked and the error is shown. This is a problem with the tool itself and is nothing to be worried about since the verification takes place after the flash is fully complete.

You don't mind if I abuse you since you the first known to successfully flash the global rom?
Therefore, my bunch of questions are:
1. Did you use the fastboot version of rom (unzipped tgz)?
2. You did dirty flash form eu rom or did you clear data before flash?
3. You don't have any modem issue, all mobile bands and both wifi (2.4 and 5)?
4. Like first impression: do you still experience massive battery consumption?
5. What are major differences between eu and global?
6. Is the rom smooth and responsive or you experience any malfunctions so far?
7. Google Pay works? If you don't use it, could you be so kind and install safety net tester and report the results?
8. Could you still use phone calls recorder?
Thank you for your patient and contribution.

I don't want to install the xiaomi.eu because of the OTA updates and more. I want to flash the official global version of miui.
For this official global rom I still need to unlock the bootloader or can I flash over the chinese version? Sorry for the nob question. I'm new to Xiaomi phones.

Just as a warning - if you decide to flash the official ROM, DO NOT RE-LOCK YOUR BOOT LOADER.
See this post.

hello I have my mi 11 on the global rom for 1 week
I flashed my phone with the fastboot rom (adb) and everything went well (if the phone restarts in fastboot mode, force the boot in recovery mode and does a data factory reset whip)
google pay works fine for me
my phone works without problem (no slowdown, no problem with the wifi connection on the phone, all Google services work perfectly)
after the rest has already been said
