Hey everyone. I just got a Note 3 n900a after having been with Windows phone for about two years now, and I'm having some real trouble rooting it. I realize it's an older phone, so it seems most development has kind of slowed for the phone. But I'm hoping someone might have some advice here to help me get this thing rooted, so I can install a custom ROM on here. The stock one is bugging the hell out of me.
So here's what I've done. I tried rooting it with an Odin tool and Root de la Vega. When trying to actually run the tool, it detects the phone in download mode and everything, starts, then fails. Doesn't want to go any further. I can't remember the specific error it gave. So I tried the Towelroot method, which is supposedly the best way to do it. Towelroot runs and says it's successful. Root checker says otherwise. I even went ahead and factory reset the phone, kept absolutely everything at default, tried again, and it doesn't work.
I'm stumped. My model number is SAMSUNG-SM-N900A, my android version is 4.4.2, baseband is N900AUCUCNC2, build number is N900A-AAR-CONVERSA-SHOY.2015.08.24.1105, and security version is MDF v1.0 Release 2. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!
This might help with rooted LP on the n900a: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703006
There is not much development for the n900a because the bootloader is locked which means the phone can't run TWRP or custom ROMs unless the ROM can be installed via safestrap and is based on a stock Samsung ROM.

The de la Vega root method doesn't work anymore. If you are on NC2 you can use towelroot.

I would recommend factory resetting your phone and then reflashing stock NC2 and try rooting with towelroot again. Don't mess with any settings after you flash. Go straight to towelroot

Also run an hash check on your downloaded firmware if possible to ensure it isn't corrupted. And make sure you are using a REAL Samsung cable to flash. People think it's B.S. but it isnt. I have HARD BRICKED PHONES using cheap gas station cords.
The firmware I used to root was N900AUCUCNC2_N900AATTCNC2_N900AUCUCNC2_HOME.tar.md5. It is 2,275,231 KB in size. Make sure yours matches

Hi i've spent the last 3 days trying to root my phone. can not get it done. i've downloaded the towelroot old and new version but the old version doesn't recognize my phone as an s4 active and the new version just restarts the phone. my main reason for root is to recover deleted photos. any help would be appreciated. thank you

Have you looked into the modstrings at all? I'm not entirely sure how they work, but many other people have reported towelroot rooting their phones with the default settings.
What firmware are you on?

if im not mistaken it's 4.2.2 ( sorry bit of a noob still )
The baseband ends in MF7 - all the vids on youtube are different baseband so that makes it hard again to root. i had a quick look at the modstrings i'll give it a go now. i really don't wanna brick the phone. when i go to do software update it says device has been modified. :S

Thank you so much that method worked a charm. it was a bit confusing at the start and worrying for having to try so many different combinations but lucky for me the second combination i tried worked 1337 0 1 0 5 0 just incase anyone else might have the s4active that doesn't want to root on stock numbers maybe that'll work.

Hey there! I encountered errors after doing your tutorial, but I was able to fix some errors such as a non-loading YouTube app and SnapChat giving an "internal" error. But I am not able to fix the "No Connection" problem on Google Play after. Is there anyway to fix this?
EDIT: I got it fixed following a tutorial from androidcentral! I am filled with glee right now!
Here is the tutorial.
Unfortunately, No connection - retry in Play Store can mean lots of things.
Another solution that you might like to try involves the creation of a new Google account (this worked for me because I did not want to perform a Factory Reset): -
Close Play Store if it is open.
Click on the following options in turn:
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> All -> Google Play Store -> Clear Data -> OK
Settings -> Accounts and sync -> Add account -> Google -> Next -> Create
Follow the prompts to set up a new Google account.
Start Play Store. Once you have accepted the licence agreement, Play Store should now connect to the Internet and start working again.
Press the Menu button then select Accounts and pick your old Google account from the list (this will restore your installed applications and purchases).
Unfortunately, your Android applications will now be associated with the new Google Account.
You can manually open any applications (GMail, GTalk/Hangouts, etc.) associated with the new Google Account and configure them to use the old one.

Wug keeps everything up to date. Shouldn't be a problem. Also, you won't be able to update when you're rooted. The update checks for any modifications and will error out. You will have to flash the update manually, or via the toolkit under advanced. There is a guide under general about how to update manually via fastboot, which is a pretty simple thing. I'm a bit cautious about flashing anything manually and I was able to do it without any hiccups. I'll grab a link for it.

Hello
i know there are many threads about rooting, i have been looking around the web for a few hours, you could say i am a noob when it comes to rooting. I have found many methods of rooting, some are lengthy and require the user to copy the files manually and some offer 1-click apps that do the root. In the end, i got confused and couldn't make up my mind. which is why i want to ask about my specific device, i have an AT&T Galaxy Note 3 N900AUCUEOC2 running Lollipop 5.0 (i updated from 4.4.2 ), the phone is not unlocked, it is still as it is since i bought it.
what is the best way for me to root? i have tried Towelroot, but it said my device is not supported, even though i have seen people on here with the same exact device claiming that it has worked for them. if you can give me instructions or provide me with a guide that can work with my phone i would appreciate it, i am really concerned about bricking it.

6: install Odin nc2 files according to the image shown in above link
7: reboot phone into Samsung recovery
8: full factory reset
9: boot phone and install and towel root
10: install busybox
11: install safestrap

13: install prerooted oc1 very easy ROM or any other ROM of your choice.
(I tried a few and decided on prerooted oc1)

Thank you so much that was very helpful, one more question if you don't mind. Since I have to do a factory reset I have to back up my phone. I have also been looking around for apps or pc software that can preform a full back up, but for the apps they require you to be rooted, if not then they don't do a full back up. I was wondering if I'm missing something, I have never done a full back up, I was wondering if there is a away to do a back up that can save pretty much all your apps, data and app data, in such a way that when you restore the back up your phone comes back exactly to where it was. I haven't done that before so I'm not sure if a back up can actually do that, let's say I restore the back up, are all my apps gonna be there or do I have to install all of them again? That's my main concern, I'm not worried much about videos/pictures/contacts etc because I know those can easily be backed up. I would appreciate if you can give me feedback about this, especially about the apps and their data. If you can suggest back up apps (preferably ones that you let you back up on PC) that would be much appreciated.
I don't know of a way to do this. Sorry.

Ok i have figured out a way to do it, i have been reading through the links you have sent, honestly i am very confused, you said you have OC2 and have done that already? in the links you provided i got lost because i wasn't sure whether some steps where required or just additional, i saw some steps that included wiping the SD card. the steps that YOU wrote seemed simple enough, i will start the rooting process tomorrow. i just have one favor to ask, if i decided to root can i still contact you if i encountered a problem or had a question? i just wanna make sure i can find help if anything happens. I am quite paranoid about it lol

Cool thank you so much man !
Sorry to add to your thread, I previously rooted this phone back in 2015 but since then jumped to many other phones without root and got out of the game. I need a refresher. In your notes above when you go to that link, there are a bunch of new files, can you provide some clarity for me?
1-Most say on 5.0 NC2 you have to use all 4 ODIN files not the all in one, can you confirm?
Hi guys!
I've had my Note 9 since December 2018. it successfully update whenever AT&T pushes out updates each time. Ever since October, my Note 9 refuses to update, saying Software Up to Date.
I thought that was weird, since every month I get a software update. One of my friends has a note 9, and he's already on Android 10.
I am stuck on Android 9, October 2019 update.
This also a AT&T variant N960U.
you guys got any suggestions? I'm a bit wary about flashing anything as I'm still paying off this phone
This is asked numerous numerous numerous times. Try setting date ahead 5days and then click software update. If that doesnt work load any US Snapdragon firmware and flash with Odin they are the same and the firmware will provision to your sim. All of my At&t devices have done this and sometimes the only option is to flash the firmware. For others updates work as they should. At&t does not post firmware.

US Snapdragon does not have that option. You can't unlock bootloader.

Does nothing to your warranty. What you need to do is read up quite a bit on these things. You can search every question you have asked. I'm not trying to be a jerk and I help as much as I possibly can with the knowledge that I have. But it seems that you have not done any searching at all to try and help yourself.

I just bricked my phone before and I ain't taking that chance, or get any crap from AT&T.
so I don't need a unlocked boot loader to flash the firmware?
Android Central's tutorial says I need OEM unlock.
You do not need unlocked bootloader to flash firmware using Odin

1. What is the build number..device..and carrier.
2. Find the firmware you want with Sammobile or Frija.
3. Download the firmware and correct version of Odin.
4. Extract the firmware. You will have AP..BL..CP..CSC..HOME_CSC you might also get user data.
5. Put device in download mode open Odin connect device to computer.
6. Once device is recognized by Odin click BL in Odin, it will bring up BL that you extracted and add it to Odin. Do this for CP...AP..and CSC. If you want to keep data use Home_csc instead of csc in the csc spot. If you use just csc it will wipe data. Once everything thing is in correct spot click start and Odin will do the work for. Once firmware has flashed you will see pass in a green box. If it fails just try again. Sometimes you have to start clean meaning factory data reset before using Odin. This has happened to me a few times. I suggest watching a YouTube video just incase I forgot something as I dont want to be the blame if something goes wrong..lol. There are a ton of good people here that will help but like I said it's best if you do the footwork yourself first...good luck.
