A few weeks ago i finaly got myself to install a firewall (noroot firewall), and it is amazing just how much other apps are sending your information and getting stuff from the internet... ES file explorer alone is trying to use internet every few seconds non-stop, so i just unblocked my computers ip address to browse pc files via wifi and blocked everything else, and android itself is creating a blocked access list with the size of chat with 100k users... Using firewall is also an easy way to block all the ads in offline apps. Are you guys ok with all the apps using so much internet ? Do you also use firewall to block all the unnecessary internet access from all the apps ?
Also, what kind of android stuff can be changed by app updates of by letting apps to access the internet ? Like when operators are trying to block note 7 and limit the battery capacity, is that done via app update or does it require full android update ?

When I surf with my Tilt...there aren't many "background" applications trying to get out to the net to do updates and such. But with a Windows PC...there are MANY applications running in the background doing/checking for updates. I have a lot of applications that run on my PC normally that I WANT running and updating...but I DON"T want them running if I'm tethered to my Tilt.
Could monitoring the websites/services we are trying to access be a way that our service providers can detect whether we are surfing from our phone or a tethered PC?
Could one use a firewall package to stealth the PC from the cellular network?
Hear me out:
- One would need a firewall package that can be configured for multiple operating/security profiles.
- One profile would be configured for normal PC operation via either Ethernet, WiFi, or whatever (except cellular).
- Another profile would be configured for the cellular connection that would block EVERYTHING except a web browser and maybe an email program.
I've used a few firewall programs before...but can't remember if there was a way to configure different operating/security profiles.
Anyone know of a good Firewall package that can do these?
I think we need to try a few packages and see what we can do with them.
You could try configuring two separate firewalls. Use the bult-in windows firewall to block ports and applications regularly, and then use something like Nortons firewall congfigured to block all but the primary ports ( 80/443/8080/ect. . . . )
Just enable windows firewall when regularly browsing, then when you tether, you can disable the built in firewall and enable nortons
Just a thought
Hey guys please help me am going crazy with my galaxy note this the first tome I use android so I don't know much about anyway I have program called my data manager and it shows me everything that uses my internet so I found is serveses and some other apps like textfree and other apparently like tune on radio use of my internet my os. Services used 100 m in 2 days which I only have 1 GB. PER A month please gimme application to control what apparently can use my 3g network or anything to solve this thank u guys
Try 3g Watchdog,
Well I have not used it for a while but if you are rooted use LBE privacy. It can monitor which app used how much of data. It also has firewall, so you can block sucker apps.
You do know that Tune In Radio is an internet radio program so any and all activity on that program will use your network data?
Well I have a radical solution for you
Go to Settings > Accounts & sync and disable background data..However this comes with a sacrifice: Market will not work but you can enable when you want to use Market and disable it again..
But you will have full control on which app to use your data connection because you will have to do it manually, e.g. in Gmail you will have to refresh it by yourself to check new emails..
This has ups and downs, it's up to you
2 tools will solve ur ur problem completely, droidwall which will block all apps including system appd if uwant to use 3G and only use wifi, and onovo which will monitor all of ur 3G internet activity and even block ur 3G usage when reaching a certain adjusted quota limit..try them they willdo the trick.
↖(^▽^)↗ Sent from Galaxy Note ↖(^▽^)↗
OMG you guys are amazing about helping people anyway I think droidwall will do the trick but the problem I have no root 2.3.6 and my kernel can't be rooted so I think I will wait for ics. To release then I will root it I don't wanna root it now then unrooted. In 2 weeks when it comes out anyway thank you guys that was a good help
Ok i don't know if this the right forum but i looking to give out to a few workers phones or tablets that have no internet access at all (i only want them to use if for calls and SMS - i not going to explain why i want it that way). i'm looking for an easy way to disable the network altogether.
i've got a GT-S6310 SAMSUNG or fire tablet. i tried an idea that i got into the platform.xml file (with the RomToolBox app) that is located in the etc/permission folder and erased the internet line>save and then restart and it worked. but there many problems like apps that crashed without even opening theme like google services.
i'm looking to just erase or change one file in the system to get to my goal. i'm sure that there are very specific files that are critical for the internet to work and if they are disabled or changed the internet access would go down. please help

This device (5th gen Fire) has no mobile radio so is off the table for your requirements. If you plan to leverage WiFi calling/SMS then that uses data, aka "the internet". Crafty individuals will easily circumvent any blocks applied at the ROM level unless device is rooted and you use secondary accounts. A bit harder to work around but still fairly easy to penetrate.

Rooted decive! So what can i do? What system file can i erase to stop any internet connection? Or maybe something that has to do with the buildprop file

Look into selectively blocking internet access via third party firewall, hosts file or VPN. Likely need to create secondary/child accounts to limit access to the filtering tools. You'll need to do some searching/testing to find a solution that meets your requirements. Probably not the right device for what you are trying to accomplish.
Over the weekend, I purchased a Galaxy S10. It’s the Verizon variant and as such wont get root. I’m actually not interested in root as my last phone was missing the last few years updates as I did the Ron Popiel, “Set it and forget it”. I’m all good there and am rather happy with it since I had an S5 running Lollipop.
Before upgrading, I asked some questions regarding whether I needed root as my main desire was to be able to use ad blocking software and block ads in applications. I was told to use Blokada. I’ve installed it and it’s not doing what I expected. What it does:
1. It installed a VPN which I keep having to turn on and off.
2. It does not block ads in all applications.
3. It prevents some apps from working: Spectrum, NFL…
Coming from AdAway, I was looking for a program that ran in the background and simply blocked ads. This program does not and now that it installed a VPN, It’s going to cause trouble for me when I want to use the corporate VPN to access my work computer. Besides, not being unobtrusive, the fact that it’s using a VPN means that whoever built the program now has access to my data stream.
Does some know if maybe I’ve misconfigured the program or if there is another program that I should use to achieve seamless background operation.
Maybe all I need is alterative DNS servers so ads won’t load. I’m not sure what to do.
Use Blokada or Adguard, or at least that's what I've used. I actually use paid version of Adguard but the other works fine
https://blokada.org/index.html
I'm using AdGuard DNS with a Quick Settings toggle I've made with Tasker to enable and disable it on the fly.
No app needed, it's fast and works like a charm even in apps or YouTube.
I need to disable it for public WiFi with login to make the login sites work, only. If I'm logged it I re-enable it.
I was using AdAway before but I wanted to try a rootless phone after I had issues with my USB Port and I like it.
I just tried Blokada again. I found that I could use the DNS frature and be protected from ads, but spectrum tells me, "VPN Unsupported". how do I get around this and not use VPN to block Ads?
I'm trying to find a way to completely block a single app from connecting to the internet. I'm playing a mobile game and want to start a new game, but when i delete cache/data it automatically loads old profile when I start it up. This game has no option to change accounts. The only way I can start a new game is if I turn off mobile data, but as soon as I turn it back on my new save immediately gets overwritten.
The only two options I can seem to find is to go into an option that was removed in Android 12, which was go into data saver options, or download some app called "netguard" which conflicts with my current VPN. Is there another way I can block this app from the internet?

by @ukanth. However, it requires you're rooted otherwise the ip tables can't be edited.
Netguard is also no solution for me as I wouldn't be able to connect to my PiVPN if I were using Netguard. Please note that I've no idea what's available or has been removed in Android 12. I'm on LOS 16 (Android 9) and won't "upgrade" for many reasons.
