Just click wipe on TWRP and slide the bar. Then install.
I wipe dalvik, cache, system and internal. Probably overkill, but doing so seems to cause the least problems. I backup my contacts to a vcf file to sd card and flash.

Just add your contacts to Google and you wont need to backup it anymore..
I believe in redundancy when backing up.

I just started using a2sd and haven't learned too much about it, so I'm wondering if I was to do a wipe (ALT+W in recovery) would I still have all my apps intact?
Your apps should be saved in your ext partition on your sd card, so yes, if you wipe the phone, your apps will still be there when you reboot. You will probably have to reinstall them, but they will already be on the sd card.

Yes sir, that is the whole point of it. the only way you will lose your apps is to wipe your ext2/3/4 partition. some of your paid/protected apps will have to be re-installed after wipe but shouldn't be a big problem.
alright thanks for quick response guys
OK, just a quick background:
I have a G1,
running Amon_ra's Recovery Image
CyanogenMod-4.2.13
OK, so I love Amon-Ra's recovery because it makes all the maintenance things very easy. Wiping the Dalvik Cache is a quick task.
Here's my question: When folks on here say they wipe every month of so, or wipe before each new Cyanogen update, do they mean wiping everything? SD card reformat etc? Or do they just wipe certain things?
I had never wiped before 4.2.13, and found each Cyanogen release more sluggish and crashy than the last. Then I wiped, installed 4.2.12, and it ran like a brand new phone. I loved it. But now a couple weeks has passed and my phone is slowing again. I tried wiping the Dalvik Cache but didn't see any real improvement.
So do I need a full wipe to get things back to speedy? It seems like a big pain in the ass to have to reinstall all my apps, reset notification tones, etc every time the phone gets slow. Is this the case, or is the general term "wiping" refering to a lesser operation?
Thanks for any help,
Tony
It is easy to backup the apps with the command 'pull' in adb, then use the command 'push' to push them back and the phone will install them.
I would just bite the bullet and redo your settings. I know there are programs like backup for root users that will redo the settings, but I have had problems with it and would rather reappy the settings myself.
One other option to try first: download "Cachemate" from the market. It's a paid app but so worth the buck.
The app clears all the temp caches - you would be amazed at how much memory is taken up by the caches as apps run. And the apps often don't release those caches even after reboots.

You can also do it manually by going "setings->apps->app management->select the app, then wipe cache" And sure it will take longer, but hey, for me it is one of the joys of using a phone, actually performing those tasks.
As for wiping, in ArmonRA, wipe data, wipe dalvick, wipe ext, then go to sd partion option, and repair ext, then wipe data one last time. That is the proper way to do a full wipe with ArmonRA.
As for wiping at home, I like Charmin Ultra Soft.

LOL! and for the thread, when they say rewipe, they don't mean to reformat your whole sdcard. That would be such a pain. You just gotta wipe the ext, (if you have partitions on your sd card), Cache, and data.
-EDIT-
Oh wait he already said that..
I flashed my i9000m from Stock ROM to a i9000 ROM, then to ICS (CM9). Everything works perfectly. No complaints. The only thing that bugs me is I still have 1GB left of space, when I have no access to the older apps that I had previously. Could they all be backed up somewhere?
I made sure to Data Wipe and Cache Wipe before installing ICS, before and after. Any ideas what I can do?
Thanks

Yup. I data wiped, but I guess that didn't work properly.
Any other way to remove excess apps? I don't know which is which using file manager.
By "Data Wipe" it means deleting files from /data, /system, /datadata, /cache and dalvik cache. Not Internal_SD and External_SD, as it not picks which file is used or which not.
If you want to clear EVERYTHING (all data on phone - to make as "just bought") you need to tick Repartition in Odin. That removes every piece of info on your phone.
simply do factory reset/format before doing any firmware update and after update, after update u can delete all sd-card files or do format it by going into setting sd options.
I have flashed a bunch of different ROMs lately. I always wipe cache, dalvik and do a factory reset but maybe it may no longer be enough. Currently, my phone is rooted with Cocore and CWM. I am thinking about going to CM11. Last time I tried that, I noticed some stuff during setup was overlooked because it already seemed to be there. So I think some bits and pieces are left in the phone. Therefore, I want to "scrub" it before trying another ROM (thinking CM11 this time). I know the CM kernel comes with it.
questions:
1) Can I just mount and reformat system, data, cache and preload to clear everything out before flashing a new ROM?
2) Will the kernel be protected (in this case is CoCore) after reformating or should I worry about it?
3) When I flash the original stock 4.1.2 from Odin, does it completely reformat everything when it loads onto the system?

Some information are stored on internal SD memory. Maybe it was there. Try to delete it. Backup SD to PC, format it - do factory reset and see if it is happening again.

If I backup the internal SD card to the PC and then restore after a reformat, won't the offending bits come back again?

I did not tell you to restore it. Keep it on PC, in case you need some of data from there. Maybe you erase some picture that you need or something like that. And not to blame me later. :fingers-crossed:
i am using the CM11 nightly rom now, there is a strange thing that phone book can't be cleared after wipe the phone in recover mode, even some Gapps as well. I want completely wipe the phone and flash a new rom, how can i do it?
Phone book = contacts?
Format system data and cache for a clear installation.

already tried above, but after reboot the system, contacts and Gapps still come back.

So do you mean that you format system, data cache, then just flash the cm nightly, reboot and skip the Google and cm account part and gapps and contacts etc still there?

Make sure you skip the part where, after wiping everything and installing a new rom, it asks to setup a Gmail account.
That could most definitely be your culprit. If you set it up, your data (contacts and sync apps) will auto-sync/download upon reaching the home screen.
