[SOLVED] QQ about A2SD and WIPING - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just started using a2sd and haven't learned too much about it, so I'm wondering if I was to do a wipe (ALT+W in recovery) would I still have all my apps intact?

Your apps should be saved in your ext partition on your sd card, so yes, if you wipe the phone, your apps will still be there when you reboot. You will probably have to reinstall them, but they will already be on the sd card.

Yes sir, that is the whole point of it. the only way you will lose your apps is to wipe your ext2/3/4 partition. some of your paid/protected apps will have to be re-installed after wipe but shouldn't be a big problem.

alright thanks for quick response guys

A question about wiping

OK, just a quick background:
I have a G1,
running Amon_ra's Recovery Image
CyanogenMod-4.2.13
OK, so I love Amon-Ra's recovery because it makes all the maintenance things very easy. Wiping the Dalvik Cache is a quick task.
Here's my question: When folks on here say they wipe every month of so, or wipe before each new Cyanogen update, do they mean wiping everything? SD card reformat etc? Or do they just wipe certain things?
I had never wiped before 4.2.13, and found each Cyanogen release more sluggish and crashy than the last. Then I wiped, installed 4.2.12, and it ran like a brand new phone. I loved it. But now a couple weeks has passed and my phone is slowing again. I tried wiping the Dalvik Cache but didn't see any real improvement.
So do I need a full wipe to get things back to speedy? It seems like a big pain in the ass to have to reinstall all my apps, reset notification tones, etc every time the phone gets slow. Is this the case, or is the general term "wiping" refering to a lesser operation?
Thanks for any help,
Tony
It is easy to backup the apps with the command 'pull' in adb, then use the command 'push' to push them back and the phone will install them.
I would just bite the bullet and redo your settings. I know there are programs like backup for root users that will redo the settings, but I have had problems with it and would rather reappy the settings myself.
One other option to try first: download "Cachemate" from the market. It's a paid app but so worth the buck.
The app clears all the temp caches - you would be amazed at how much memory is taken up by the caches as apps run. And the apps often don't release those caches even after reboots.

You can also do it manually by going "setings->apps->app management->select the app, then wipe cache" And sure it will take longer, but hey, for me it is one of the joys of using a phone, actually performing those tasks.
As for wiping, in ArmonRA, wipe data, wipe dalvick, wipe ext, then go to sd partion option, and repair ext, then wipe data one last time. That is the proper way to do a full wipe with ArmonRA.
As for wiping at home, I like Charmin Ultra Soft.

LOL! and for the thread, when they say rewipe, they don't mean to reformat your whole sdcard. That would be such a pain. You just gotta wipe the ext, (if you have partitions on your sd card), Cache, and data.
-EDIT-
Oh wait he already said that..

Sorry.. Can't find anything on this..

I wiped my ext because I wanted to increase my swap.. so I backed up my sd card, wiped my ext, partitioned the sd card again, upgraded to ext4, reloaded sd card contents, rebooted. Now I'm missing all my apps.. but in market they say installed but won't let me uninstall or open - wtf?
Hmmm.... Not sure if that does a complete repartition that way or not or if there is an easier way to do it, But I took my sdcard back to one partition using windows disk manager. After that I formatted the card (FAT 32) and then put it back in the phone and repatitioned. Had no problems that way... hope this helps.
you probably need to wipe data, dalvik, ext, reboot into recovery, repair ext, and then reflash the rom
i think i know what the problem is.....you posted this in the wrong section.

wipe properly.
Happens :/
Yeah, you have to do a complete wipe. When you install apps and don't install them back into your Ext partition then the market will still say you have the app installed, but it's not there so everything grays out. Happened to me a few times. Learned my lesson :O

darchdroid apps2sd + wipe phone, what happens?

I've never bothered with apps2sd previously, but since I've been running darchdroid the last few weeks I've set up his native version and have been loving it.
Now that dd2.7 is out and MMS is fixed, I tried to flash over but it didn't fix the issue. Release notes say I may have to wipe to get it to work. Ok no problem.
What happens to my apps2sd stuff when I wipe my phone? Will I be able to just flash dd2.7 as per usual and everything is good to go?
If I choose to wipe everything (including ext4), will I have to repartition my card again or will my current partitions hold from when I partitioned them the first time?
I ran a few searches but couldn't come up with any good answers to my questions.
I appreciate your help,
-b

If you do a wipe, you'll want to wipe ext and cache as well. I suggest Titanium Backup or something like that for your apps.

Partitions won't change unless you re-format your SD card. Nothing on the FAT partition will be touched.
awesome, thanks for clearing things up for me.
Much appreciated.

[Q] About Darktremor A2SD

I am using the rom which is Darktremor A2SD compatible. Every time I change another rom then all apps will get force close. I need to reinstall those apps.
Is it normal?
Anyone can help me? Thanks!!
When you change ROMs, it's advised to ALWAYS WIPE EVERYTHING. That includes EXT partition.
If you want your programs to run after moving to another ROM - back them up using Titanium, change ROM, and restore them.

Actually I'm not sure wiping EXT is necessary but certainly data, caches etc.. If problems continue, then wipe EXT too.
EXT should just have the APK's on it, they should just work.
If you're wiping /data, then you're left with APKs on EXT and no data structure for them in /data/data. Might be just the reason for force-closes.

most roms detect and "re-install" the ext apps on first boot. All 200+ for me
Wiping ext would be the very last thing I'd do to solve a problem.
I used to do this. But i learned that it breaks some apps, and the built in rom restore function will restore any apps you got from the market. You need to do a full wipe when going to a new rom. upgrade may not need this, but some devs like king dont know how to make upgrades so all of his new versions require a full wipe.
Thanks you all! Seems that full wipe is necessary

clean install CM13

I want nothing left on my phone before installing new rom, will wiping data cache and dalvik be enough? or should i do internal storage to?
again, i want nothing left. clean as it gets.

Just click wipe on TWRP and slide the bar. Then install.
I wipe dalvik, cache, system and internal. Probably overkill, but doing so seems to cause the least problems. I backup my contacts to a vcf file to sd card and flash.

Just add your contacts to Google and you wont need to backup it anymore..
I believe in redundancy when backing up.
