Happy new year to you too and to all your beloved ones.
To use substratum theme engine, you need a ROM supports Sony's Overlay Manager Service (OMS).. that can be found natively on AOSP ROMs not CM ROMs.
But, you can also use substratum with CM ROMs after merging the required services to support this theme engine.
Here you can find more info about substratum theme engine and how you can merge it to CM ROMs:

There is no way to have the actual cm theme engine on stock.
HKTheme Manager uses the CM theme engine and works quite well on stock. It's an Xposed module.

Hi. Has someone got Substratum Theme Engine to work on PRA-LX1? I tried to apply overlays , they get compiled properly, but theyre not being applied if i use Layers Manager i can theme for ex. Supersu
Can i get some help? I tried Substratum community on G+, but got no useful information...
I built overlays on my mothers note 4, transfered over the Overlays folder and pushed it into /system/vendor/, all seem to work, apps are themed correctly Now only left is to figure out how to make substratum install overlays directly from the app, without need to use note 4 :/
Does it only theme the apps?

What else does it have to theme? XD I use Swift black for user apps and DarkBloom for Emui apps. We use substratum legacy, so no way to get custom fonts or bootanimations through substratum

I am not a huge fan of dark themes, but I was able to get a few working. I had to apply it a few times before it stuck though. Substratum is a little buggy at the moment. The current theme that I have applied is the Pi [light] but the Pi dark works as well, I use pi dark for my notifications bar.
