NOTE*** I'm on 7.0 beta OOS***
Hi all, I have just unlocked the BL, installed twrp, and have been trying to flash SuperSU and no dm verity zips.
All I see is twrp asking for my password? I enter in the pw I have and everything's it says wrong pw..
I've wiped user data however this wipes the zip files from the phone which brings me back to square 1..
I've read numerous topics however none of them have a definitive answer as to what my next step should be..
I am fully booted into android now and looking for help to decrypt data in twrp so I can root..
Thanks everyone for any help in advance!
PS. This phone is super sexy!

Boot to whatever Android you have installed, set a 4 digit pin fit lockscreen. Then reboot to recovery and use that pin in twrp, it should work.

Would downgrading to marshmallow possibly help due to mm encrypting in a different fashion? I've read that N uses file based encryption...

If you want to install new recovery img you pick flash to recovery...
Flashed the beta TWRP version. Works perfectly in OOS 4.0 OP3T

Here are stock Mate 9 boot images that are modified to not force encryption. You can flash these in fastboot or TWRP, just select Image in TWRP then flash. An insecure boot image lets you use adb remount, and adb push or adb pull etc. to /system and its contents. Basically it's using ADB as root. I'll modify more upon request provided you link me to the boot you want modified.
ALL VERSIONS:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=152685
*To remove encryption after flashing to stock , boot into TWRP, format data, reboot recovery then flash a decrypted boot.img. If you're running a stock modified kernel, formatting data alone will not remove encryption. The idea is to always be decrypted. Never boot the system with a stock unmodified boot.img or it will encrypt your internal storage. So if you're fastboot flashing back to stock from another rom, flash a modified boot.img instead of the stock one*
In the full root thread it was advised to format data first and then flash modified boot image. In this OP it says to flash modified boot image and then format data. Does the order matter or can you do it both ways? Thanks

The order doesn't matter as long as you Format Data and have the Decrypted boot.img installed you're good. I updated the OP with the same directions as the full root thread so there is no confusion. Thanks for pointing this out.

Just to clarify. After you Format Data your data partition gets decrypted until first boot.
That's why you have to flash the decrypted boot.img before booting.

Tell. Me exactly what u did..
Try : default_password if this doesn't work.. Then m sorry my friend u have to format full data..
Its asking for the encryption password. The default password is "default_password" (without the quotes) try that. And if doesn't work then enter Bootloader (fastboot mode) and enter the following commands into CMD.
Code:
fastboot format userdata
Code:
fastboot format cache
Code:
fastboot reboot
This will unencrypt your phone and you'll be able to boot/enter TWRP normally.
Please do note that you'll lose ALL of your data from the commands.
Also, I'm not sure about this but you also might need to flash TWRP again.

How is this possible?
Firstly, if u cannot enter into TWRP, then how did you flash the ROM?
Secondly, even if you somehow flashed the ROM how does it do away the password error ?? Did it replace the recovery? Recovery image is not usually included in custom ROMs.

I was running out of options. i thought why don't i flash the last rom that was running on this device. i can't explain how or why. I flashed the twrp again and than the rom. i can't explain but it installed the rom. It worked.
So you froobs can't read the dm-verity warning on TWRP page and just flash the one damn zip that prevents from this.
And the problem is in Kernel and firmware

Wait, were you able to get past the twrp password thing without formatting just by flashing the rom? Why did you have to flash twrp again before the rom? Did you do a clean flash or dirty flash? Your internal drive was not wiped?
My problem is basically that I was unable to get into my phone so I deleted the 5 gatekeeper/lockscreen keys from data/system. Now I can only see the wallpaper and a blank screen that doesn't allow me to do anything. It doesn't let me allow me to set a new pin. TWRP is asking me for a password that I never set. I've been trying to figure out how to access my data without formatting, but I'm running out of options too..

Maybe he used SuperSu to root? I dont' see a dm-verity zip for that. You have to use the bluspark TWRP posted above this reply and set your password in the ROM through another app or through the system settings in that case. I had the same problem. Also, I could have used "default_password" but I didn't know that until after I did all the fastboot flashing...
Or do you know of another zip SuperSu users can flash?
The password which its asking for is the one which is our lockscreen password

Noo, you have to just do it once and if you want to flash Oreo ROMs, use Oreo twrp. You need not format the data then.
What I noticed is that its showing up as 0mb because the device is still encrypted. In order to fix this boot up into the OS. Set a screen lock PIN or password. Make sure you save it as requiring password on startup. Then bootup into TWRP and it should ask you for your password to decrypt. Put in the correct password and your files should show up again.
Note : Got this answer also from @morphixxp

Our devices don't have a recovery partition to flash to.
Read the install instructions correctly:
https://twrp.me/motorola/motorolamotox4.html
You should use "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-payton.img" instead.
Then, follow along:
This will temporarily boot TWRP on your device. If you are using a lockscreen pin/pattern/password and do not get prompted to enter your password, reboot to the bootloader and try again. Go to install and browse to the zip and install the zip. The zip will install TWRP to both boot slots. Installing TWRP at this time will remove root if you are currently rooted.

No,

I could be wrong but it seems like you are trying to flash TWRP to the recovery partition and there's no such thing on this phone. You have to temporarily boot TWRP and the keep following the instructions.
Is anybody able to backup / restore the phone with android one on encrypted file system??, im using the official twrp, but restoring backups just cause bootloops
is it necessary to unlock the bootloader before?
If you're asking if the bootloader needs to be unlocked to install magisk, absolutely!
Sorry for the dumb question but how do you unlock the bootloader on the Fi Android one Version?
Potential fix

If you are still haven't fixed this yet the issue is you need to fastboot boot the boot twrp image and then flash the flash image inside twrp. The guide on TWRP official will give you a guide on how to do this, the files required are also there.
