As we know google is going to pre enable the Data encryption on Android L and we already have it as an optional extra security ..
So before anyone rushes to enable it to feel more Secured . First let's learn about it ..
As this option is available in Security .
If you enable it you have to enter password/PIN(compulsory) ..
80% minimum battery + plugged in for charging is necessary .
Once the encryption starts it will take about 15 minutes to complete the process ..
Once it's complete , it will automatically reboot the phone . booting will be in 2 stages.. On first stage it will ask for password/PIN to decrypt the phone/phone storage
And then the second boot process will be the normal one ..
And now comes the warning part ..
Once you encrypt the data , you have to decrypt it on every boot and you can't disable this .. You have to factory reset the phone to remove this .
And here at XDA we flash mods and zips etc almost every day/week ..
So if you encrypt your phone and then you flash anything via bootloader ..IT WILL FORMAT EVERYTHING ..(including internal storage, basically factory reset)
So if you are an advanced user with custom rom/recovery etc i suggest you to first do a complete backup If you really want to try the data encryption .
So i hope this information be helpful for those who are unaware and don't know what can happen , and i suggest you to read about it before you enable it ..
For most of us, we already know that encryption causes issues, always. Maybe not immediately, but always at some point.
Its the new people that go "oh encryption, sounds good, must use", when they don't have any data that's actually important enough to justify the need for encryption.

That's why i created a new thread specially for those who are inexperienced .
Not everyone are born developers/pro
Everyone learns with making mistakes
And our Job is to help them at XDA .
IMO this is what XDA is for at the first place ..
I'll rely on custom ROMs as always, that certainly have it disabled by default.
I think it's insane google would try to force this on us. Shame on them. ?
How does android L handle staying unlocked in trusted areas if encryption is enabled?
Despite the warning, we will see how the encryption will work in Android L. It might not be the same process as described from Kitkat/JB of encryption.
Who know if the process of encryption will be changed in Android L, so that you don't have to do each step to encrypt/decry pt and the flashing/modding issues.
I see many bricks coming from this as well, from unknowing flashers.

Probably they are going to change the way it works .. , because they haven't updated it since it first came out with ICS ..
The inability to use pattern lock is enough to turn me off Android encryption. All the other problems just makes it a no brainer.
May be they have overcome these issues and thus made it default....
I find no sense in making some hectic procedure as default
wow. wonder who will have access to the encryption keys.. or more likely supplied the encryption technique in the first place?
cough... nsa, feds, gchq, ect...... cough
don't believe the security services fake crying about encrytion... just a fairy story to pacify the sheep

When NSA forced TrueCrypt to hand over their keys, they essentially and purposely updated their product to be broken to ensure no one used it. Wonder what Google would do?

You can't do it out of the box, but you can make it work fairly easy with twrp and a backup. The quick version is:
before encryption, setup your pattern lock, do a nandroid backup in twrp. Reboot, change to a PIN/password to allow encryption, perform encryption process. Boot back into twrp, it will prompt you to enter your pin/password, since it can decrypt and then function inside of the encrypted volume (and therefore restore an unencrypted backup inside of the encrypted envelope in essence). Restore your backup that has pattern unlock and reboot. It should prompt you for your strong pin/password on each initial boot, but once booted, it will use your pattern unlock. Downside is you can't change your pattern after that, so pick what you want the first time. You can change your pin/password if you want, I use EncPassChanger myself. I also use bootunlocker to relock the bootloader after I'm done, just have to make sure to unlock before flashing any updates.
I use this process on both my N5 and 2013 N7.

AH OK thanks. I thought there was some recent, concrete news about what went down.
Thing is, now what will we gotta do to still be able to flash zips with encrypted device? XD
So I recently encrypted my phone....because I read it only encrypts the data partition...so if I wanted to update my CM11 version (m9 to m10 for example) I wouldn't be able to?
I should have read into it more I guess...
edit: TWRP saved my ass. Just looked at it and it decrypts the data partition.
I encrypted my phone, but now wish I hadn't. I'm pretty sure it is the cause of some small issues I have had flashing different ROMs.
fml :crying:
Couldn't find much about this varient just wanted to ask a few questions.
1. Do I treat it like every other google play nexus? Unlock boot loader, flash twrp, boot, backup, reboot, wipe, install ROM? No different partition weirdness?
2. Cm12, are the hotspot checks removed? Fiance is limited data plan I'm not so while out she normally uses my data via hotspot.
3. Cm12 have notification light activated and customizable?
Don't really care about the Sim lock honestly. Been with ATT forever and poor so not leaving the country anytime soon.
Thanks, sorry for repeat questions just didn't get solid answers from things I found.
No partition weirdness. Root as normal. It does have its own boot logo-thing though, which is lame.
Unfortunately I don't know about CM12. Sorry

At least you answered my bricking level question! Thanks!
CM 12 does have working hot spot on AT&T and customizable notification light. And, boot logo is easily removed after root.
Somehow I soft bricked my n6. I unlocked boot loader, installed twrp, went to backup and it couldn't find any partitions. Tried the flash all script from google factory image and that failed as well. Had to flash boot radio recovery etc images each manually to get back to a booting phone. Then installed twrp again and backup and flashing worked.
It was an adventure but I'm good now. Weird not sure why it did that. Must have been an encryption issue.
On the stock ROM you have to tick a box in developer options to enable OEM unlock. I forgot to mention that earlier. That may have been the issue.

Oops yeah that may have been it. I just did the usual fastboot OEM unlock code. Mild panic attack but when I saw I could get to the bootloader I knew I could save it.
I would like to purchase a Nexus 6 (US Version) and I've seen a few for sale that claim to be google email account locked.
The reason usually given the "owner" forgot their password and can't reset it.
I was thinking a factory image restore would clear everything and un lock the phone.
Not sure if this would work, if someone could confirm either way, I would appreciate it.
Is there a way to bypass the google account lock?
Thank you!
There is no bypass method known..do not buy it.

Is there anywhere that I can learn how this account lock works?
I am legitimately trying to get a nexus 6 cheap then use it as my personal phone, not intending on hacking into someones, I could care less if all data on the phone is lost.
I was thinking if I wiped the system and data partitions it would undo the software lock. Or is this Google Account Lock more than just software rooted?

The information has not been released into the public domain. We don't know how it works. It's most likely stored on one of the many partitions that we don't have access to, but we don't know that. All we know is that we haven't found a fix. Flashing system images doesn't help.

It's your risk. One random guy here reckons he managed to get it bypassed at a mobile phone repair shop, but he couldn't give us any information towards how that was achieved. We take it with a pinch of salt.
It's Just anti theft which imo is a great feature to have

It's meant as a security feature to deter phone theft, whoever said they were able to work around it was lying, the only way to get past that screen is to input the correct password of the google account, factory reset and flashing google images do not get rid of the lock. If the person that had it before removed his/her account before wiping the device than that screen would not show. Now if the person truly forgot their google account pass, they could easily reset their password if they are really the original owners of the phone provided they have another email/number for google to send the verification info, my opinion is the seller either found or stole the phone and is looking to make a buck on someone unsuspecting, because they cant use it themselves.

It is, but what it should do when you're factory resetting, is remind you to remove your google account first if you are selling it.

No way to tell the back story of the phone. This anti-theft measure came in without warning, so people who updated and then wiped it without knowing they needed to remove the account first, could easily have sold it and it not been tested by the buyer for this as they didn't know. There could easily be a legitimate story behind it.
That said, no one should buy these devices anyway, for their own sake and the fact that they *may* be stolen.
Also, as unlikely as we believe it to be that someone managed to get it bypassed at a mobile phone repair store, doesn't mean it isn't true. Just because we don't know a way around it, doesn't mean someone else can't - though that is besides the point

it was a bug in 5.1, where you would enter radom digits.. buts its been long fixed, and only worked if the person set a password.
you should be able to bypass this by flashing back to stock and using the no-encrypt kernel from Wugfresh's toolkit.
The google account lock is just because encryption is active and someone did a factory reset on it while it was encrypted.
Source:
I did this to my own once when flashing ROMs and could not get pass the password screen, flashing the no-encrypt fixed it
I haven't heard of this....I have a N6 on the way which means I'll be wiping and selling my LG G2 (running 5.1.1 Paranoid). Is this a new thing with lollipop that I need to remove my account first, or is it device based?
If so, Settings > Accounts > Google > Delete your account or services? Is that all I need to do before wiping?

if your bootloader is locked, and you have stock recovery, you cant flash a stock factory image. and you cant flash a custom kernel with the stock recovery. so, you couldnt of done this in your wettest fantasy. but, if you have twrp, you could. but then again, if you have twrp recovery, you can fix the issue regardless.

if you can get into fastboot you can fix most of those things.
TWRP would be for the kernel, but you can unlock the BL and flash a recovery all from fastboot which is not secured by the account lock

You can't unlock the bootloader unless you set "enable OEM unlock" in Settings, which you can't get to if it is google account locked.

yup. but if you have twrp, fastboot formatting userdata and cache should fix it. if you havd stock recovery, then youre screwed.
More than positive this Nexus is stolen.
Stay away from it. If it's locked, it's probably been reported and it's IMEI blacklisted. So even IF you could get it unlocked somehow. You will still be boned.
As for cheap Nexus 6? They are on sale for $350 on Amazon.
Hello
Just got myself a new piece today. I'm afraid to do anything wrong and afraid to use without installing a new ROM myself.
I have read on different forums that when you buy a global version they are often infested with malware and you have to do af fastboot update to remove it all.
I haven't powered the device up yet because I want to do things right the first time.
My intention is to have the newest official stable global rom on the phone. I just not sure which step i need to take.
If a helpful soul could advice me I would really really appriciate that I have found several guide but I need to know the exact right steps. It is okay if you link to a step by step guide.
Here are links that I would go with, but I'm not sure if I need to unlock and if I have to wait for 2 weeks to be approved or if there is a quicker way

If you're still afraid of beginning with all these great guides, better do not power on though.

Well eventually I will have to power it on - won't I
I'm not affraid to use these guides or some other detailed step by step procedure. I'm just a little confused about the order and if these guides can be used if I want newest official global stabel ROM. I guess It is more the steps than what you do in the steps - hope it makes sense

You'll have to get it powered up and registered. Xiaomi impose a 3 day embargo on you where you cannot unlock the bootloader, I'd at least get that timer ticking away and then apply to unlock it asap.
Then you need to install TWRP. I recommend searching for the Mr Raine's version.
Pick a ROM and then off you go!

A fastboot update wouldn't remove anything that's on the device. As it sounds, it would just perform an update.
As others stated, you should get it powered on & start the unlock process through Xiaomi. You don't need to sign into your Google account, so the only thing they would have access to is the Xiaomi account you register with.
After you are able to unlock the device, get a custom recovery (TWRP) installed. You may need to try a few different ones, i.e.: The "official" one doesn't have the touchscreen when booted into it.
From there, choose a ROM, flash, & you're good to go.

Thanks for the help so far and good advices.
Update of the situation is that I powered the beauty up. I could see that it took me through the entire setup phase from the beginning like it is normal for a brand new and untouched phone. Shortly after it was updated twice via OTA and is now on the newest official global ROM.
Everything is working perfect and I am extremely happy with the phone.
Two days ago I requested Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader as I would like to root the phone.

Let me know how it goes when you do, & what you end up flashing. I'm done the latest MIUI Beta & now the Pixel Experience 8.1 ROM, & I keep losing voice call server. Hi I've been using a custom rom for quite some time now but I decided to go back to stock as I don't really see the benefits.
the issue I'm having is despite flashing a stock rom in Odin and seemingly completely unrooting the device, apps like google pay aren't allowing me to use them as they say the device has been rooted or modified in some way.
in the settings it clearly says my device is official status, does anyone know how to overcome this issue please? I prefer to use google pay to my cards as I often lose them if I take them out
thanks

well it was probably written in every thread when you downloaded twrp and followed the guide to root that this was going to happen. its pretty wide spread knowledge if you'd care to have investigate a bit before jumping ship. been like this for years and years so nothing new or "hidden".
reading goes a long way. even now if you'd have taken a minute to investigate you'd see the futility of what you want to accomplish. ( going to stock and expecting it to be as it once was before knox was tripped)
moreover there are guides on how to hide google pay and installing a version that does not detect root or a modified system.
search is your friend.
edit
there is one thing that i just though of that you might have forgotten to do and just might work though.
during the rooting/twrp process you had to go to dev options and toggle the OEM unlock.
go there and lock back OEM. this will wipe device so beware.
also when you fully flashed back the 4 md5 files with odin, was data wiped?
