Has anyone managed to find a set of headphones with an inline mic (like iphone ones) that actually work with android?
They both have the same 4 band pin config. so assuming it can be possible. From the research I've been doing on here, and like forums, it doesn't seem like this gets properly answered which I think might be down to the kernel (newbie so posso totally worng here) not been able to register the additional vol. buttons? Has anyone managed to sort this problem out so you can use which ever sets you like with functionality?
I think this is a two part question with one part going towards the Q&A section but anyway.
Cheers,

I haven't found a pair of headphones that I can control volume with, but all the "iPhone-compatible" headphones I've used with my phone have had the mic and play/pause/answer/endcall button working.
Just for reference, I've tested this with AKG Q350 earbuds (volume doesn't work, everything else does), iPhone headphones (same deal), and JBuds J3M (this is my own pair, it doesn't have volume controls but does have a play/pause button, which works). The mics on all three work with the Nexus S.
Finally, it may be of note that the earbuds included with the Nexus S do not have volume controls on them, which may indicate that it isn't possible.
yea may be it isnt possible

I've the 170vi and no problems at all.
Hi guys,
Can you reccomend some other earphones ??
I'm interested in one that can skip songs and control the volume.
Go with meelectronics best earbuds ever. Awesome sound than my 300$ shure earbuds and very cheap also

I have tried the HTC stock headset, the headset has the volume up/down and answer button, the answer/end and mic works, but the volume will be replaced by previous track and next track, the + will be previous and - will be next track switch around, but can be rectified easily, the design of the + and - buttons can be switch around by using your finger nail and praying off with little force.

I'm looking for a headset with control-keys on the wire. The AKG Q350 are more expensive but offer quite impressive sound.
So you wrote that the volume-keys doesnt work. Can I do something else with the volume-keys? Maybe changing prev/next track?
Thanks for your answer.
I haven't been able to get the volume buttons to do anything. I can control forward and back with double/triple press of the normal button. Maybe there are settings that I'm doing wrong or something, but initial poking around doesn't seem to reveal anything to me.
The best solution I've been able to come up with is Zagg Smartbuds (http://www.zagg.com/audio/smart-buds.php). Instead of volume buttons, there is a physical slider mechanism to control volume.
Not ideal, but definitely way better than nothing.
Also worth noting is that while the button controls (single-, double-, and triple-clicks) worked flawlessly on my Nexus One, they were super screwy on the Nexus S. The same set of headphones only registered single clicks-- a double click counted as two single clicks (pause--> resume play) and a triple as three single clicks (pause --> resume play --> pause again).
I'm currently using an app called Headset Button Controller (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&feature=search_result but there's also a free trial version) and it's working alright.
Sorry for the long-winded reply, but I had the same question for a long time and this is the best solution I've been able to come up with on my Nexus S.
Just bought the (Logitech) Ultimate Ears 600 vi, the volume up/down button doesn't work, but the play buttons work as expected, single press to pause, double press to next.

Cool, never knew the VM series existed, if it supports Galaxy S, I think it should support our NS just fine.

Found some....
The stock headphones that come with the galaxy s3 have 3 buttons and work on the nexus s out of the box.
Play pause, next track, previous track.
Now I just need to convince my wife to let me have hers...
Hope this helps.

How can you make it work?
Got the app but it doesn't feel volume buttons...
Nexus s and galaxy s earphones are diffrent I have both of them and galaxy s earphones cannot play music properly
i think there is no solution for the nexus s where volume control is possible. i looked for the same thing some time ago. finally i ended up using a bt dongle, sony-ericsson mw600. i use klipsch image s4 headphones where i shortened the cable at the connector and made them longer near the earbuds. now i can wear the headphones around the neck. in the back the cables are held together by the movable clip which was on the headphones originally. the dongle then hangs on my chest and i can but it under the t-shirt if i like. the controns offered by the dongle are back, play/pause, forward, bt-volume, accept calls and it has a microphone. i have to say that the volume control does not affect the nexus s, it is just the volume of the dongle and additionally, the volume control is annoying. it is not made of two buttons but rather a touch surface on the side of the unit which works less than brilliant most of the time. that said, i can leave my phone in my pocket and control all the functions i need for listening to music during the day. battery life of the dongle is about the same as my nexus when listening to music, around 8 hours.
Hello all... looking for development ideas / possible solutions for music skip function while phone it turned off in my pocket.
Please read to understand what I'm thinking ;-)
I'm looking for anyone with suggestions to a small problem of mine...
I recently upgraded? to the Nexus S from the Nexus One. My problem is that I use the phone a lot for Music and I was using a custom 2.3.4 ROM that implemented track ball music skip functions on the Nexus One and I really miss them on the Nexus S a lot !
I have the CyanogenMod volume control music skip implemented but I find that when the phone is in my pocket and I try and find the volume controls, I end up pressing the power button accidentally on the opposite side at the same time thus turning on the screen and canceling the music skip functions. I end up fighting with my Nexus S to skip the the next music track or I just end up changing the music volume instead.
--------------
I would like to implement a Tap to Skip function... so when the phone is off and in my pocket I can just tap it two or three times to skip the track.
My plan was to implement the skip function in the PhoneWindowManager and use OnGestureListener for taps...but I guess this is not going to work when the screen is off ??? so the other option is using the Accelerometer to detect the taps but I don't have much of a clue how to do that.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you
Oxygen Rom can skip to next track when holding vol up button and display turned off.

Thats an idea but I think a tapp to skip is a lot more universal and convient. Plus I don't think I've ever seen good headphones with this button... and I'm not sure the functionality even exist in Android?
Does anyone even know if it's possible to get GestureDetector.OnDoubleTapListener to detect tapps when the screen is off... I assume no as the touch-sensor will also be powered down.
So I'm looking for ideas to use the accelerometer to detect tapping... I will write some code tonight and see if there is any way within my skill set to do this.

It does exist, although not all head phones work with it and its kinda finicky. But, hey, its easier than writing code

Part of your problem seems to be mixing up the volume buttons and power button. I find this problem will probably lessen as you get more and more used to the phone. This is a problem I never have due to the difference in feel of the screen and the back of the phone I always know where the volume and power keys are.
I've found the CM volume key controls to be much too slow as they only allow for long press track changing. May I suggest you give PlayerPro a go? PlayerPro is the only music app I've found that allows for lockscreen music controls allowing you to reverse the key taps so that a short press of the volume keys allow for track changing. Albeit, this means that the screen must be turned on for the track skip via volume buttons to work, I personally love this interaction(intended or not). If I simply want to change my volume, I leave my screen off and tap the volume keys. If I'm trying to track change, I simply tap the power button, and then use the volume keys to switch tracks. I then press the power button once more to turn the screen off again.
May seem a bit complicated at first, but I can't imagine listening to music without this function now, it's just too useful. Don't know if that will work for you, but maybe give it a try. For someone like me who shuffles an entire library, often skipping tracks, skipping tracks via long press of volume buttons is WAY too slow. The short press skip track function of PlayerPro is perfect for me though. Maybe it'll work out for you too.

Did you ever tried this : Menu/cyanogen settings/lock screen/delay and timeout/screen timeout delay = 30m screen turned off delay = 30m
you screen should be off but lockscreen doesn't
it may help.
I used to skip track by double tapping the mic button on headphones.. but that was using my vibrant on touch wiz. Don't know if it works on nexus rom

The stock HTC headset works reasonably well. Not the loudest, though. Also not very comfortable.
So I guess, it's not really a 'good' headset.
This is a great idea to implement, i can't find any decent android headphones so this would be the next best thing

Hi everyone
I am a new owner of a galaxy gear and i have been experiencing some weird issues related to music controls.
the play/pause, volumes up and down butoons works just fine
but the next track and previous track are actually controlling the volume also.
i cant fast rewind when holding the prevous track button and when holding the next track it just pauses the song.
i uploaded a 40 seconds videos to show the behaviour
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmBAzSSV_dk&feature=youtu.be
I am using a samsung galaxy note 3. I dont thing root is the issue coz it was doing the same when it came out of the box. i even factory reset my phone to check if the root on the phone side was the problem but no.
is anyone had a similar issue ?
thanks
I have an issue too. My album art will display on my fear, but the seek and play buttons don't work. The volume buttons work fine but that's it. Any input would be appreciated.

Hey,
I have been using my B&W P5's with 3 button control and mic with my Nexus 4 quite happily until i upgraded to the Z3c, however, now the volume controls don't work and the middle button only raises the volume, does anyone know if its possible to fix this, or even to reconfigure the middle button to skip instead of just raise the volume?
I don't hold out much hope in getting the volume controls to work. I've tried a couple of apps (Headset Button Controller) that claim to do this but no luck so far.
I have a similar issue. I've been using a Samsung headset similar to the one that comes with the Galaxy S4, with a three button configuration. The volume buttons actually work, but the play/pause button only raises the volume like with yours.
I have never managed to get volume control working with any android phone I've ever had. Really sad and quite stupid if you ask me. Some headphones that have apps obviously allow it, but using those third party apps has never worked for me.

Will listen in here, since I to have a three button headset that doesn't work. And the one I have from LG G2 turns up the volume with the middle button as well. And one tried the Sony headset on the Play Store?

All my headphones with 3-button controls that are made for Android work as expected so far with the Z3C - with the HTC RC E240 giving the best quality to price ratio.
You can use the Sony Smart Key app to re-map the middle button. If all three buttons actually register presses in apps like JAYS Headset Control or Headset Button Controller, you should be able to re-map the volume keys too with those apps.
Of course no 'Made for iPhone' branded ones will typically work, as the volume controls feature patented Apple tech and custom wiring. Presses of the volume buttons will just not register at all, and can't therefore be re-mapped.
Any Bluetooth headset controls should work fine with everything.
I have the exact same headphones as you. I'm super disappointed the controls don't work. I tested and the microphone works but controls are the same as yours.

These look quite interesting, do you need to use any other software or do they just "work" with the Sony Walkman player?
Also how do the buttons map to the functions? Does the middle button do all of the Pause / Skip Title, receive / end call functions whilst the buttons that look to have track skips icons actually do volume instead?

For anyone in the UK, I can confirm that the HTC RC E242's sold by Amazon UK themselves (they show as enhanced in the extra detail towards the bottom of the page) have track skip buttons that actually control the phone's volume.
Just wanted to say thx received my HTC e242 headset today and it works great. It's dazzling how these manufacturers don't use the same standard for such things...

Alternative
Might not be the perfect solution but it's an alternative . Since I was really missing the three button control I decided to try it this way.
There are small bluetooth controls that Sony's brought out that do the job and depending on wich one you might get it has even more functionalities.
I got the SBH20 ( just google it ) for 20€ in Germany and am now able to use whatever headphones I want - Best solution for me seeing as I was very pleased with the Sennheiser headphones I had and didn't really want to change.
Thought I'd share it - maybe it'd suit you to
Hi guys I'm using the "Nocs NS500 ALUMINUM (ANDROID)", the website of Nocs says: "Sony Xperia Z1/Z2/Z3 - No support for 3-button remotes with 4 poles." It's possible to change vol. and sometimes if i fast push the middle button it skips to the next title. At my old HTC One X the right and left buttons changed the title and the middle one pause/play.
Im using PowerAmp and tried Sony Smartkey but it didn't worked. Is there any solution that the remote will work like on HTC or do u know other tools to try out?
Edit: Or is there a way to turn of the remote?
i am using sony mh1 with ec250 adapter it works fine
I have an issue and searched for about 2 weeks and still can not find and answer. Many have had the issue on different phones, but he only thing that seams to work is disable the google assistant app.
Problem is:
The AKG headphones that come with the Note 9 open the google assistant app when the volume up button is pressed. I have searched for weeks looking for a way to correct the issue.
things I have tried that did not work:
I have went to the assistant settings and disabled wired headset, removed permission, rebooted after changes but nothing works.
*The only thing that I was able to do to get the volume button working was to force quit and then disable the google app.*
I went through Settings -> Apps -> Google. I then force stopped the app and then disabled the app.
Volume up now works, but I do not have google assistant that I use for hands free texting and calls especially when driving.
Is there a way to regain the functionality and keep my volume buttons on he wired AKG head set working as they should?
Thanks

Firstly ,
i never use my AKG headphones with my Note 9.
I always use my U Level Bluetooth headset .
However ,after reading your post above,
i tested my AKG on Note 9 ,to see if i have similar results as you......
No ,
I found that it works as intended !
Smoothly ,no issues.
I ' m also a Google Assistant user .
i found that AKG up volume button , works to increase volume .
Down button to decrease volume .
One tap (middle ) for pause .
Long press (middle) launches Google Assistant .
also note ,
that i have not configured my AKG buttons at all .
I now used/tested , it for the first time on my Note 9 (SM-N960F)
My device is a no root , stock device .
Maybe ,G search ,for a 3rd party app that allows you to configure headset presses ?
I can remember, years back there was a button press option settings ,in device .
Don't see it now ,but might have missed it?
bottom line ,
'somewhere/setting ? ' your AKG buttons are configured wrongly ,as it works as intended .
Good luck .
Not having this issue. Are you using a button remapper on your phone at all?

I don't think it's a model variance.
Have you tried the AKG with any other phone ?
If yes,
and does the buttons presses, react similar or "normal" as it should do.? eg
(Press up Volume up,
Press down, Volume down etc)
Secondly, have you tried any other earpiece /headset
on your Note 9 ? to see if button presses, functions similar to as your AKG ? or different?
If it functions /reacts similar as your AKG then it could be an mod /Bixby remapper eg like bxActions app etc /Android Launcher eg Nova ? that's causing it.?
Good luck

I tested on my S8, S9+ and note 9 they all do the same thing volume up activates google assistant.
I have Edge gestures, Nova Launcher, Button Mapper installed
I don't have either set to remap buttons any other buttons but Bixby.
But now that I remember I got the same thing on my Essential pressing volume up on wired headset caused this issue.
So to test, I turned off accessibility services for Edge Gestures and Button Mapper still get issue. Nova Launcher was never activated in accessibility services.
I tried with 3 different pairs of AKG all do the same thing the only other headset I had was an old iPhone (boo iPhone). of course they did not work for volume.
Looks like I will have to do a hard reset and install app by app to see what the issue is. I start with my S8 since it is my back up now.
Did some more testing and found it to be the AKG headphones causing the problem in my case.
Tested with the S8, S9+ and Note 9. Now I have to set up the phones again. bummer.
I did a factory wipe and only installed Power Amp (my music app of choice that i paid for). Same issue with volume up button activating google assistant. Used three other music players with same issue. Volume up caused google assistant to activate. No button mapping straight factory reset.
I scrounged around looking for and found some old Nexus 6p Hauwei headphones. Everything works perfectly. Volume up does not activate google assistant and all the functions work. They even sound better. Tested with all three music apps.
Pretty disappointing that the AKGs cause this issue, but i have found the problem.
I'm not sure why I'm having this problem and as others mention above they did not with their headphones.
Hope this helps someone that has this problem.

On a positive note,
at least you are getting somewhere with this anoying issue or getting some answers in solving, this issue !
I noticed that you use Poweramp music player.
It's also my music player of choice.!
I have the paid version and using Poweramp beta version.
I again tested my AKG with Poweramp
AKG working fine.
Up press, volume up.
Down press, volume down.
Middle press, pause.
Long press launches Google Assistant.
So for me no issues with Poweramp.
So overall,
I see you have found that with another headset, every works fine.?
So i agree it points to your AKG headset.!
Even though comparing AKG headsets
(mine and your AKG)
AKG should also work fine.?
but yours does not.?
Question is what to do now?
Maybe consult /contact local Samsung
offices in your area?
(Faulty AKG headset?)
Even though i have personally found this "route" to be a waste of time.?
Good luck
