Regarding PMs - Off-topic

Hi there!
People have got to check their inboxes and reply to the messages. I don't know the case of others, but I've had to PM a few people asking guidance in solving certain problems with the phone. I did so because I didn't want to clog up a thread with my dumb questions. :silly: But, to my amazement, no one has replied yet. Doesn't anyone check their inboxes?

Use the correct forums to ask your questions.
Don't bother people in PM.

Asking a question via private message isn't the best way.
Ask in the correct forums.

Place for newbie who looking for help

Responding for post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=272524
---------------------------------------------------------
I would like to ask for every one who have "experience" in thins forum to announce them self "would hael newbie"/WHN. So newbie who affradi can PM them, so they can direct to right forum or ask the newbie to make new post, because it's never been posted before.
--------------------------------------------------------
I'm cornelius not a proffesional at all.. even not a "senior member" at all, even some time i have wrong english spelling, but i've get a lot of help from this forum, so i'll help newbie who looking for help for their alpine's device. You can PM me, even Email me (like other person was), i can't guarented to answer your question so instant, but with this i hope i can help this forum like this forum help me a lot.Don't be affraid it's public forum...
---------------------------------------------------------
But please be polite, someone asked me for help (come from same country as me) but i read their PM to late, then i try to sms that person asking if their problem have been resolve, but he replied me(I try to translate to english): "NOT YET!!!! but if you can't help, just leave.. DAM... as........."I'm shocked and didn't reply him again...
Me, myself often found that "search" function didn't help at all, i have 2 browse manually, even internet connection from my country is slow.... and totally expensive...
But this what i can give to this forum...
I hope other "senior member" or experience member can do same thing...
I Hope this forum always get BETER each time....
Bravo XDA-DEVELOPERS...................
I respectfully disagree. I think we should encourage people to post rather than PM straight away. The only reason I am a "senior member" on this forum is because I have my browser open most of the time at work so I managed to rake up over 500 messages to this day.
I am not an expert, and I have absolutely no knowledge in some of the topics this forum covers. Although I can't speak for everyone I believe this to be true for most people on this forum.
While I will always try to answer any PM to the best of my ability, I will always recommend posting the question to the forum first. I am just one person and may not know the answer, make a mistake or give incomplete information. Also there may be a better way to solve the problem.
This is why it is always better if many people see your question.
As for posting in the wrong place, worse case scenario is that and admin will move your thread to the proper place.
As for the search I can only hope it will improve now that the forum switched to the new system.
Finally, you need not worry about language here. English is not my native language either and it is the same for many on this forum. It is a global forum and that's part of what makes it great.
(P.S. I owe my descent spelling to google toolbar spell checker )
I hope every member can be as polite as you levenum, so this forum will much... better. I mean PM juct for confirmation after that ofcourse it's better 2 post on fourm.
I hope the serach function will be get better...
How to change my forum "Profile name"

Using Personal Message to ask forum question.

To jasonchiu - using PM to ask forum questions is the wrong way to go about getting information. The idea of a forum is so that EVERYONE can ask questions and everyone can see the answers, that way everyone learns. If you just trawled the members online and PM'd everyone this is SPAM and everyone hates that...
Anyway, it's obvious from your questions that you haven't read much (if anything) because they have all been answered before - I suggest you do some reading then post your questions in the open forum. If you get told the question is dumb then it probably is, but you'll still get some answers or tips.
If you just PM everyone because you're too lazy to read you'll just end up getting flamed - then when you brick your phone no one will help.
Same Here ---
Seems you're not the only one getting PM's with questions that could have been asked in the open forums. I too have been getting some, as well -- although not from jasonchiu.
Folks -- to keep PM'ing users about getting links to files that are already posted on the forums' threads is NOT cool. The links are there. READ THE FORUMS!!!
I don't mind answering questions via PM about a certain app I'm using, or how did I do . . . ?? But, to get a PM wanting a link to something that's already on these threads over and over again -- and with SEVERAL different hosts -- is uncalled for. I will begin ignoring such requests. . .
I, too, am constantly reading and trying new and different ROMs and apps on my device. Reading is where the answers come from. If you can't find an answer, THEN post your question in the appropriate forums. Then -- only if you don't get an answer -- PM someone whom you feel could help you out.
If you're getting PMs that should be open forum, just post them in the open forum and ignore the PM. PMs aren't an excuse for greater laziness, and the forum is a forum after all, ie public debate and discursion.
V
If you think you get a lot trying being a mod... but im not complaining, i like helping people!
But i do see the point of some people shooting pm's instead of posting in the fora.. some people are afraid of getting flamed.. kinda like whats happening in this topic. I find that most of these people know the answer is in the boards, and they have searched but couldnt find it and afraid of being humiliated. Some people are just lazy, but they are usually to lazy to send a pm as its faster to just post the same question over and over.. what i would suggest is that if someone constantly pm's you then either keep pointing them to the correct threads, or tell them you dont know.

Repeating Posts/Questions

When a member (both new and senior) repeats a post/question that has been answered before torches rise, everybody looses their head and hell breaks loose.
Just hear me out, please
Some members complain that repeating questions and posts "create spam" and just clug the forums. But comments that complain about those posts are just as unhelpful in the community.
All I'm saying is that I belive most users do search before posting a question, and they might not have found the answer with their specific phrasing. If they address the question in a different manner, in a near future when some one else encounters that same problem, they there are more chances of finding the answer, or even better: a more updated one!
So please: if you have easy access to the answer or a reference to it, it will cost you next to nothing and might save the forum several posts there after if you just actually help!!
This is something all forums suffer from. Just wanted to bring more awareness to the issue from a different perspective than most users.
... go ahead and flame me if you must

True enough, but the people who find the answers tend not to start a new thread about how they had a problem and then fixed it .
I've not really run into much trouble with the searching. If I find a thread where someone has asked a question that I'm also looking for the answer to and it's full of replies saying how it's been answered plenty of times before then at least I know it's an issue that's been dealt with and I can keep looking, confident that my answer is out there.
Sometimes it gets a little excessive when there's more than two or three replies to someone's thread telling them to search, but then it is clear that there's a hell of a lot of people out there that just plain don't bother trying to find things out for themselves. If anything can be done to make sure that they only do this the once, I'm all in favour.
ok, so i'll reply to this post by also referencing an answer
this thread is redundant you <insert worst insult you can think of here> noob
please see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=371254
Ahhh....the irony!
I just put a rehash of previous posts in the last post and in my first post in that thread, and in Notatreofan's recent thread. Just so that more threads aren't created, I've included it here too.
_Alex_ said:
As for the problem with redundant threads, I've been trying to either:
Giving the new user a search term (that we know will help), or
given the new user a way to navigate and use the resources here, mostly created by us to prevent users from asking questions in the first place, or
given the noob the links he wanted.
If you're genuinely interested in helping others, you'll realize that two of the three ways actually teach a person new things, which means they'll be better off on their own, while #3 only encourages them to ask more questions.
Finally, it's not the amount of time you've been here reading, because that's not contributing back to the community. So my suggestion to you would be to come back and re-read this thread after you've contributed back to the forum by having at least 500+ genuinely helpful posts and see if you feel the same way.
And I don't mean your suggestions to fix a soft key issue by bashing the keyboard with a screwdriver

I'd like to add, if you're feeling particularly annoyed, you can always include this link. If you append your search terms like this:
Code:
http://www.justf**kinggoogleit.com/search?q=tilt+backlight+phone+call
It will redirect after 15 seconds to the google page you want. I highly suggest a bit of chastising when using that link, but please make sure they're aware that it is humorous and slightly offensive
Perhaps I've forgotten to emphasize that there is a fine line between chastising and harassing. Some members take it too far while not helping at all The idea is to get new users to become self-reliant, not flame the living crap out of them and belittle them

is the 23053 have the sime problem?

like the title,is the 23053 ROM have the sms problem like the 23049? it can't receive the sms mail when turn off the screen.

If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.

today say too much.but just xet the answer is to my question.thanks
ok guys calm down.
First off @ it1861 - Try and abide by forum rules and search before creating a new thread. Yes, you are correct, the rules do say to try and help others when they ask a question. But you have to understand a lt of questions get asked countless times and people lose their patience when others don't search. Obviously they shouldn't lose their cool but instead should direct you to previous thread, and remind you of forum rules before a mod comes and closes thread.
Secondly @ shruff - Everyone has been a noob at some point including myself and it can be hard at first to navigate site. Please treat others with repsect and the way you would like to be treated. No need to lose your cool, just report thread and a mod will come and assist when available.

How do I POST replies in DEVELOPMENT Forums?

I have an Atrix 4G and a fair bit of knowledge on it. These forums are really good, but it would be useful if I could reply to threads in the atrix development. I have answers and questions, but I don't know if I need to be approved or something like that in order to post in the forums.

Since you are past 10 posts now you should be able to post there. If it still doesn't work in a few hours, then you might ping one of the mods in that forum to take a look at your account and see if there is some issue there.
You need 10 posts to post in development forums, which you can find out more about by looking at the links in my signature.
The server only updates permissions periodically so yours may not have been changed yet, but you have the required post count.
I've had a look at your posts and you're not a typical "10 post spammer" that we see a lot of in here, which is greatly appreciated, but it's still worth a reminder about the following things.
Don't create threads in Development forums unless it's to release software. Questions go in either a relevant existing thread, or a new one in the Q&A forum (or General forum if there's no device-specific Q&A forum). And on that note, always search thoroughly before asking. Nothing irritates other members more than seeing the same questions asked over and again.
Anyway, just bare the above in mind and go enjoy the forums. I'm just glad I don't have to delete a bunch of pointless posts

Yeah man I just want to contribute. Do I need a "thanks" or something like that ?
Also can an admin "approve me" or something like that? My only other question is the five minute between post wait can that be removed? For example I'm just waiting now to send this reply, it's no big deal, just wondering.
Also I posted a thread here asking basically the same question, I don't know how to delete it, but here's a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783730

Nope, its not reflected by Thanks Meter. Just 10 posts is decent enough. For deleting/closing that Thread, you need to contact the Forum Specific Moderator assigned to that Forum.

At the top of each forum the mods responsible for that forum should be listed. I was suggesting to send one of them a PM, but Archer answered you here.
I got it. Thanks for the help I can post now!
@mf2112 thanks it's working fine now I can post replies !
