When I look in my sdcard, some of the apps that I've backed up end up as zip files. According to search, I should be able to just rename it from .zip to .apk
I did that, and tried to install, but it keeps giving me a warning that says this app cannot be installed on the phone.
Why? and how can I fix this so I can install these apps back?
Thanks
maybe because changing extension names on files makes them unstable. look in app private. im sure the zips came from the apps folder it happens like i said look in appsprivate folder
Hey all, I'm currently in RA after flashing the recovery image , and I'm trying to install the FRESH rom on there but for some reason when I try to "Flash zip from sdcard" it's telling me "No zip files found." Why is that? I have the whole zip folder placed in the main SD card, so why is it telling me it's not found?

I responded to you on http://GeekFor.Me, but the reason is because RA looks in the root of sdcard, the zips can't be inside of any folders.
So does that mean I have to take out all the individual files and place them directly into the root of the sdcard? Because I just basically copied the download folder and dropped it into the root. Thanks for the reply

You need to leave the files in a .zip, but yea that zip needs to be on the root of the sdcard.
The only file you need to install the rom is fresh-cdma-hero-20d.zip (for fresh rom 2.0d). Any other zips are just addons or tweaks or whatever they may be.

Hmm, I'm on a Mac and maybe it's me but the link I download from gives me an actual folder rather than a zip. And when I rename the folder to a zip, it gives an error. Is there a mirror link to download an actual zip folder?
Boogie when you download it dont opening after it finishes downloading .. just use the finder to navigate to where its at and then copy that to your sd .. when you open it on a mac it will automatically create the extracted folder .. hope this helps ...
Sounds like your using Safari to download it. To make this easier in the future go to Safari > Preferences > General and make sure that "Open safe files after downloading" is NOT check-marked.
Safari is unpacking the zip file for you. The file you want is in your trash bin, drag it to the root of your SD card and that's it..
Ok I'm gonna give it another go. Since I made it all the way through to the RA stage, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to flash the rom is there?
Thanks for all the help everyone I finally got it to flash the FRESH rom, but once I rebooted it, it's still in the "HTC" branded screen. Is it loading? It's not going anywhere but this screen, although I know it's doing something because the animation shine is moving.

After flashing a new ROM, it can take up to 10 minutes or so to load.
Nice Everything is all good! Now my last question is how do I get the removed apps from the ROM back onto here? I actually prefer to have some of those programs back onto the phone.

There is a link in the release notes to download all the removed apk's from Fresh Rom. You will then need to use adb push to push them back to /system/app. Search for how to setup adb on a mac as I honestly don't know.
Ok er, noob question, but MobileOdin(lite) asks me to download added zip file for the N700. i did this, but how do I get it to install? Because it is present as a .zip file in my SD card and everytime MobOdin starts it asks to download the additional file.
Renaming it to .apk doesn't work as it gives a parsing error if I try to install it & if I extract it four different folders come out. How do I go about it then?
what are them folders ?
META-INF
System
ect ect ? ?
if so its probably a CWM flashable package.
*facepalm* noob action here. Used some other file manager but then used Astro & voila! Apk extracted and installed! Done and done!
I found this site on how to root my Touchpad:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390829
and this one on how to install CM onto it:
http://chrisbryson.blogspot.com/2013/09/how-to-install-android-on-hp-touchpad.html
But nothing mentions when/how to install CWM (or one of the ones listed below) as shown on the CM nightly page found below
-PhilZ Clockworkmod 6.0.4.7 (non-touch)(will backup and restore in both cwm and twrp format)
-Milaq's ClockworkMod 6.0.5.4
-Flintman's TWRP

At what place would I flash the Recovery?
To install android you will create a folder on the touchpad called cminstall.
This folder contains the three files needed to install android - moboot, cwm and whichever version of android you prefer. Optionally you can flash gapps from this folder too.
There are much better tutorials on the web and this site than the ones you quote - the first is irrelevant to installng android, and there are better ones here on xda than the second.
Also the recoveries you mention are for installing kitkat which requires repartitioning of the file system. Prob best to stick to JB for now
Cheers

I found a tutorial here:

But when I attempt to extract the Acme Installer - I downloaded ACMEInstaller5M - but when I try to extract with 7Zip to the Nova Directory it keeps giving me an error?
You don't need to extract the acmeinstaller file, just place it in Program Files/Palm, Inc, open up a terminal window and enter in the command to run it.
Of course, you do this after you have set up your cminstall folder on the touchpad.
A word of advice - I find it useful to have 2 copies of the rom you want to flash - one in the cminstall folder, and one in the root folder of the touchpad. This is because sometimes the flashing process with acme can be a bit funny, and it automatically deletes the files in cminstall once its done. I've flashed a couple of touchpads with acme and Android hasn't installed properly, so having a backup somewhere else on the touchpad is useful.
Cheers

It's been awhile since I have had to use acme but I believe it is a jar file so either use a different browser to download or change the file extension from (.zip to .jar).
Unfortunately I am not at my PC but can check later if someone else is unable to confirm this.

THIS WILL WORK IF YOU HAVE THE STILL HAVE THE gapps ZIP FILE ON YOUR SD CARD
If you properly flash the latest CM12.1 (20160110-Nightly) and properly flashed the Gapps package. And as soon as you boot up the phone you get all these app crashes and some apps are not working here is what you do:
First: download ES File Explorer
Second: using es file explorer navigate to your sd card and find the gapps zip file that you tried to flash and open the zip file, next open the system folder.
Third: now you must open each folder and check to see if it has an apk file and download and install it too your phone
*don't worry if it doesn't show new permissions before instillation or if apps are still crashing while your do this cause after everything has installed the crashes should stop*
and the gapps package that i am using is (gapps-5.1-2015-04-20-15-56-24) if you want to be sure that it works
oh yeah and make sure you thanks me I helped
