How bad it is to flash phone very often? - K3 Note Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

for example today I flashed(with full wipe every time) about 7-8 times....for finding a way to fix gps-network drop fix
normally... I flash about 5-6 times a week... :/
so this came to my mind.... how bad it is to flash too much??

@sandeep.sethi bro....what about you? developers+beta testers are crack flasher....by what extent??

I don't find any harm in that, during my peak time with my phone, I flashed like 8-10 ROMs in a day. My phone is still working fine, but I recommend you to limit your time checking out ROMs, you might end up risking your internal storage.

there is an article on wikipedia I believe that says how many times a nand or nor memory can be written safe

Life of the BlackStone ROM

How many Flashes till the BlackStone ROM dies out...
I mean, there has to be a limit to the number of
flashes we can perform till the memory dies...
yes there is but...
Believe me, you will trash you device earlier then the amount of re-flashing has attempt...
the amount is really a lot... even if you flash it 10times a day... you will die earlier... so no worries about.... you will never see this!
Good luck with re-flashing your device...

only 999 HD versions to go!!
it depends on the chip, but it can resist from 10,000 to 1,000,000 erase cycles.
let's suppose 10,000 times. if you flash it 10 times a day EVERYDAY, which is mostly unlikely, it would take 1,000 days, or approx. 3 years, for you to kill your touch HD.
so from this point of view you can flash it at your own will, you will surely dispose of it before it dies...

Flashing limits of SGS

Hi All
Can anybody tell me or have encounter such an issue where no more ROM flashing is possible if yes then after how Manny flashings.
Thanks

i flashed different croms, kernel around 40 times i think, still my sgs running buttery smooth and fast.
as long as your sgs is running, you can flash over and over again.
cheers
As often as you want. There are no limits for flash ROM. I have flashed my sgs maybe 150 times ...
To ask ... how often you can install linux on your PC?

As far as i know, there is a symbolic limit to flash a device wich is not comparable to install a OS in a PC. That's because if you install linux/windows/whatever youre doing it on a hard drive, while when you flash a rom to a phone you do it over a EPROM memory. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
Yeah great guys..!!
Thanks a ton to build confidence in me --- so i can flash atlest 150 times as daggi78 has mentioned in his post.
Thanks

I must correct me.
fps249 is right. EPROMs can be rewritten up to 200 times, then they are consumed.
So i have to pull the break otherwise my phone is dead in a few weeks.

Have you read what I wrote? I specifically said that there is a SYMBOLIC limit. By that, I mean that it's almost imposible for a person to reach that limit, but it doesn't mean it's not there. And i said that it's not the same flashing over an EPROM than installing an OS over a hard drive, wich is right.
Guys pleas don't get me confused, atleast 100 time i can flash my phone....sure...

You're right, sorry. Yes, you can flash at least 100 times.
Even 150 times!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
It depends on the memory chip used, for example, a typical nand flash chip will have a data retention of 10 years and a 100 000 program/erase cycles.
Flashing is just one aspect of program/erase cycles you also have to take into account downloading and installing apps as this also counts toward the total. I'm not upto speed on the android file system but there are also what they call leveling algorithms that try and make sure that all memory cells within the flash are used evenly. If, for example, you read/write the same addresses over and over again they will wear out quicker than the rest leading to bad blocks.
Having said that, its more likely that your phone will die from other causes before it becomes a problem
No Limits
There is no limit as such...till your hardware is fine, you can continue flashing. I don't even remember the number of times i have flashed my device. Don;t worry on this one and have fun
5 lac times i think !
150 times?! it means you flash every 2 day durring a year... c'mon aren't phones meant to be used to call and message rather than flashing daily? what is the point of such practise?

Phone/Battery screwed up

Hi guys!!
My phone is seriously screwed up. I'll get to the story.
A couple of nights ago, I couldn't copy files to sd card both from the phone and the computer. So I took it out and tried to format it in Windows but failed. So then I tried to format in linux and succeeded :good:
Then I tried to copy files to it, eventhough it seemed like files were copied, when I tried to read it again after ejecting the card, it was empty No files were copied!!
My SD card had failed and so I removed the SD card and let the phone be. ROM was CK MIUI 2.4.6. I noticed that battery started to drain faster through the night; around 40% for 8 hours
I tried using various other ROMs, tried the battery friendly CM9 too - both elols and rcset's. Still no avail. :crying: :crying:
I think its a hardware error. Can I claim my warranty??

Yeah try to claim the warranty and see what happens, good luck. And please don't change your phone.
My Experience with Service Center in Bangalore was good .. they gave me a replacement phone (Some cheap dual SIM phone) when i had issues with display and wanted to replace it .
Lead time given was 1 week as it had to be sent to some central location but they guy called me up within 3 days and asked me to come and collect my phone ..
So they treat the Mi 400 owners well as it was the costliest phone in there arsenal some time back .
@whyzee, any updates on the phone and battery backup?

no bro, not yet. The phone is still with me and I'm currently getting ~19 hr usage with only calls/msg.
I'm on Bumblebee and I'm getting nice backup, can you try it once (ya I know it still has ICV) but gives nice backup and each and every feature works (excl. FM, HDMI) or sharp Modded (.35) Fix1 which also gives nice backup, but the condition is that you need to stay on any of these 2 ROMs for few days and not flash any other ROMs immediately, I've seen that constantly flashing ROMs also reduces battery backup no matter on which ROM you are on (means you don't get good battery backup even if you are on battery friendly ROM), if you want you can try it as a last solution...

Hi Whyzee
First how old your battery is and did the service center guys replaced the battery?
Do one thing wipe everything, cache, delvik cache battery stats and revert to stock GB for sometime. then check the performance for your device and tell us
I'm on sharp mod fix 1 and getting better battery life (I think) currently testing it and update after a few days

Im on elol SOB ICS. This thing is kick ass battery saver. So smooth yet saves ton of battery. I've attached current stats. Been browsing wifi over an hour and battery still shows 100% I got 25 hours by charging up to 90 % yesterday. So I think that's what the secret was. When u flash a rom recharge it to 90% first time and then 100% the next time. Will report tomorrow

Please help me my phone gets so HOT!!

Hi, l have this problem on my phone, my phone gets so hot when i am listening to music and browsing(Mostly at the same time), it causes the battery drain so fast.
I didn't check how much was the temperature, but it feels so uncomfortable when it gets hot.
Does it usual for all Smartphone? or only HTC?
Seems like the problem happened after i updated to Official HTC ICS update. I seldomly used it when it was with stock rom so i am not really sure.
which rom you are using?

You can put it in a glass of water and because its hot the water will evaporate without getting it wet

Mine is exactly the same. I am using the ICS Sense 4 rom so I think that the cause of this is the ICS not the rom it self since you are not using any custom rom.

Mine is getting that temperature when i am playing Shadowgun or Modern Combat 2 Black Pegasus. With FIFA the latest one i got barrely 39C. I think that this is a normal issue.
And no that isn't just with HTC. It is with all phones out there. Except if you got down clocked it. But then again it can't be 29-30C all the time...

But doesn't it affect the battery? this morning i used it for browsing and listening to music, also i did youtube streaming for about 30 minutes(it took so long for buffering). it drained faster than usual,
or is it because the place i used it for browsing was in low signal? so it drained more to get the signal.
Anyway thanks for the telling, i was thinking of changing the phone, but since the others also have the same problem, i will not change it and stay with my SXL

I am thinking to root my phone, and maybe will downgrade it and later may try a custom rom.
But if i do such thing as install custom rom, unlock relock bootloader, will it format everything include the phone storage or just the internal storage?
Since it has no external sd card so i am not really sure of it.

Just unlock and relock the bootloader wouldn't wipe your data. It is good though if you do backup from the current rom after root. That way you can't loose your data

Yes it will! So backup your data
Root your phone while keeping the stock ROM.
Install Titanium Backup.
Make a backup of all the apps you wish to keep.
Flash a new ROM.
Reinstall Titanium Backup.
Restore your apps.
IMPORTANT: make a nandroid backup before you flash your new ROM, to be on the safe side.

Hi, the heat issue is still bothering me, do all phones start to get hot(39-4* Celcius) in just a few minutes(about 5-10 minutes web browsing)
My SXL does it and the battery keep draining.
It surely bothers me that i have to charge the phone twice a day and an uncomfortable feeling in my hand.
Considering the phone's battery is 1750mAh it will be able to last 3-5 hours, isn't it?
But my battery monitor says 1hours 25minutes remaining in 44 celcius.
*Web browsing only reaches 43 celcius
Web browsing + music last time reached 44 celcius.
Something is wrong , my sxl is max 35 celcius no matter what but in normal use it is 30 degrees like now

I just tested my SXL
it was in a very cool condition because of the fan on my desk
29 celcius at 21.49 o'clock
i closed the fan and i tried to do a web browsing until 21.56 o'clock it reached 35 celcius
i didn't really hold the phone, and my room has an air conditioner.
I don't mind if the max is 35 celcius, but mine can be more than 35...
How about if i send it to HTC service centre?
I heard the service centre review was so bad.
also am i able to get the warranty back by flashing it back into stock rom?

No you can't. Because if you relock the BT it will be "RE-Locked" in the BT menu, not "Locked". But if you go trough with flashing a stock rom.......then you are lucky.
But just tellin ya, they do not give a ratsa** about the condition of the phone after they return it to you. You can get it back with scratches or worse.
Keep that in mind...

Overheating is a problem on most laptops and phone during heavy usage/load. I had a friend that used to put his iPhone 4S in the fridge after playing a few hours some games, so nothing to worry about this, also, my Dell Streak used to overheat when i was playing games, browsing and streaming videos on WiFi and charging it, but nothing to worry, it's normal, if your phone doesn't randomly reboot then there is no problem to it, all hardwares have "safety switches" that underclock the processor (laptops) on the fly or reboots/turns off the processor (phones and pretty much everything).

[Q] Factory Rest

I been researching this for the past few weeks and can't come up with an answer. I am wondering does doing an FDR more than frequently cause any harm to a said cellphone? Mainly I ask because since getting this phone I think I have done well over 20+ FDR's out of bordem, and also because of Flash crack addition from my previous phone of the m8.
Thanks guys

I mean you could do writes to the full NAND (which isn't even possible) daily and the phone wouldn't have issues for probably 2-3 years, if even then. There is a bigger chance of something else breaking beforehand.
