I will be honest with you. While my Note 4 worked without issues, it was the best phone I ever had and I would not even think to upgrade it. However, about two months after my warranty expired, I received an update (I rooted my phone a week before to use wifi tether) and it began to glitch really bad. This have been reported in a thread right below this one (ddi: mmc_read failed....) check it out. Some people report the same issue that something is going on with the phone's internals. After recent update (epk2), the glitching stopped a bit and only happen when I run some apps (not very heavy ones, as if RAM fails or emmc). Not me nor anyone in that thread was able to clearly identify what is the problem. Could be anything from bad emmc chip to anything in the hardware. Could be just OS getting messed up. So if you buy it, be cautious when you going to mod it.
I ordered a new motherboard and hopefully this phone will last me another year or two. Really loved it!
I was going to root it right after buying it but now i'm curious. Is there any way to check if device has that issue or not?

I don't even know. It happened to others on different occasions. Some reported it as early as August and they had a different version of bootloader and OS from mine. Could be that some of the phones have bad emmc chip (like old MyTouch 4G - HTC had two different vendors for chips. While one was good, the other was failing over time). Maybe if everyone in that thread checked and posted their versions of hardware - we could get somewhere...
By the way, other Note 4 versions also experience this issue.

Go for it, if the condition of the phone is up to your liking. Im on SmoresV1 6.0.1 rooted with the beastmode kernel and the phone is running great. No issues or problems with it.
Once I upgraded my Note4 to Android 5, and later 6 the phone experienced severe overheating issues. It finally died, and then two weeks ago I received a new replacement note4 with 5.0.1, it just bricked today.
Do not get a Note4 unless it is running 4.4.4, and do not upgrade.

Thats not true bro i am running 6.0.1 from 9months without any issues and before that 5.1.1. I had some battery issues but since i got new battery everything is fine now.
Probably something wrong with your device motherboard.
Kitkat is outdated now and many games doesn't work.
No it is true that many users are having problems with upgrades. I didn't say you had a problem. I had the same problem with a BRAND NEW Note4 in 2 weeks of use.
I am going to be the odd one out and NOT recommend that you buy this phone if you want the most reliable custom ROM experience.
The hardware is all there, it's all great. It's got that tablet pen (if you use it, it's a pretty good Wacom-enabled one.) The problem is the software support. None of the bigger, official ROMs like LineageOS, AOSP, AICP, CopperheadOS etc... officially support it. The firmware is very tricky and difficult to get working, I'd assume. And I don't trust any of the developers here in terms of how long they will support their ROMs. Anyone, anytime could just decide that they don't want to support their ROM anymore, then all those contributions will usually either go to waste, or hopefully become forked. Regardless, after the discontinuation of Cyanogenmod and the huge disappointment I've felt over the past few months with no big developments on the Note 4 on LineageOS, I can't really say that the Note 4 is a good choice for software developer support.
Do the right thing, and get a smartphone supported by the major custom ROMs (LineageOS, AOSP, AICP, CopperheadOS). Unfortunately, any ROMs that have a foothold and a Website, usually set the groundwork for other ROMs, and the stage of what phones should be supported. The Galaxy Note 4 is on none of those lists, and this is a very sad, sad thing, but it's just the reality of it. The vast amount of proprietary firmware used on this phone is hard to support and it leads to difficulties and reliability issues. There's also so many variants of Samsung Note phones to support (like 10 or more) it just becomes ridiculous to support everyone's Note build variants. It's silly, to have to support so many variants of nearly the same hardware, isn't it?
Leave it up to Samsung to ruin such a great hardware concept by their corporate BS and leadership. The only Android phones people should be buying now are ones officially supported from Google, and popular custom ROMs. Don't depend on just any XDA developer to keep your ROM of choice supported for 8+ years. Just don't do it...
Guys I have already got note 4 and been using it for past 2 weeks. And for the custom rom support,I don't like aosp roms,so that's not a problem.I use stock roms only(or custom rom based on stock).

I, like some others on the internet, feel like it's very possible that there won't be a Galaxy S5 GPE. Here's why:
-Samsung has hinted they wish to use their own OS (Tizen) and are trying to ditch Android. I don't know how far away this is, but with continually locking and customizing down their platform it appears they are purposefully moving away from the openness of Android. With them being slated as a manufacturer of an Android Wear device, this occurrence of ditching Google could very well be far off or nonexistent. I've only read a couple articles about this possibility, and it somewhat makes sense.
-Samsung won't move to software buttons. Google has long since pushed for software buttons on Android phones, and now most OEMs are following Google's "suggestions".
Samsung, on the other hand, has stubbornly stayed with hardware buttons (which I'm perfectly fine with XD)
-It hasn't been announced yet. The M8 GPE was announced and went on sale about three weeks ago. The S5 was announced 2 months ago, and there's been no mention of a GPE. It's possible it could come out at Google I/O, but it doesn't make sense why Samsung would wait so long after their biggest Android competitor already released their GPE.
-There are lots of hardware features to integrate. I'm not sure that Google would let Samsung integrate the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor into the stock skin.
Although this post may seem pretty negative, I really hope the GPE S5 is released. I loved stock on the S4, and it would be a real shame if they stopped with the GPE phones.
What are your thoughts? Will they pull through and surprise us all with the S5 at I/O? Or will it remain a distant dream?

They announced they will be making tizen phones, but they will still make android phones as well. From what I read, it didn't sound like their flagship would be tizen based any time soon, and the tizen phones might be in developing countries. This is based off one article I read a few days ago. New/different info may be available now.

I think it's all speculation at this point, but Samsung seems not to be nearly as devoted to Google as other Android OEMs.

Cool thanks! They'll turn into another Nokia (except with Android on the high end, not low end).
I think the S4 GPE was a success, so it seems silly why they wouldn't give it another go.

There is no Galaxy S5 GPE yet. This is only speculation.
On the S4 GPE, you couldn't change display settings like you could on the stock one (Cinema/Photography/Adapt Display).
There was only the stock calibration. I'm sure there were and are kernel mods for it, though.

I don't think so, carriers are the ones who don't care about the users. Samsung promised, "in three months", and they delivered. 4.3 in late september and KK in late january.
But to keep it ontopic, if we don't see a GPe during I/O they may release it a bit later. HTC launched it earlier because they're desperate to get some attention for the shiny turd...

Any help. I haven't used a sense phone since the HTC Evo 3D.
What phone are you upgrading from? I've had several phones including the late iPhone 6 plus and once you get Note and its features, you can never go back. Multi window even with third party apps, ir for remote control, S-pen for notes(there's no substitute), camera is one of the best for a phone. I just use Nova in place of TouchWiz and I'm good.

Not sure about the Flex 2, but the only advantage of the M9 is that it's supposedly 64bit, however the Note 4 is far superior in all other aspects (SPen, Gear VR, for example). But then again, they are two different kinds of niches.

Avoid the Qualcomm 810 it has heat issues that cause it to under perform. Most tests have show the 805 (which is what is in the Note 4) out performs it.

I agree and that might be a reason (or one of the reasons) why Samsung is dumping the Snapdragon altogether on the S6 (and future devices?).
Cheers!
I came over from the HTC ONE_M8. I've had my N4 for maybe 2 months now and am starting to warm up to it. When I first got it I didn't like it too much. Compared to the M8 I found the N4 to be laggy, sometimes even complete freeze ups. After turning off a few things along with some changes with the settings it's much better than it was. Since I use the S-pen for work, I do like that cause it works well with what I do. The battery is pretty good, it gets me from wake up to bed easily, pretty much using the phone without worry about it running out. In fact I'm just over 5 hrs screen time with 11% left. One thing that I do like is how the screen is, especially in sunlight. Overall it's a good phone

If I hadn't gotten the Note 4 awhile back and was just now getting ready to upgrade I would most likely get the M9. Had the M8 and loved it.
Get the note 4.
There won't be another good rootable cell phone til the s6 or note 5.
I say if you find a good deal on the Note 4 get it. If you're paying full retail then I rather have the latest and greatest. M9, or GS6
I'd get the note 4.
M9 seems like it won't have a lot of devs based on m8.
S6 seems so far away.
S5 wasn't any good anyway.
Last cool rootable cell phone was s4.

Of course I do. If I didn't I would have sold it and bought something else. The Nexus 6 is the only phone (other than my Gnex) that I've owned for more than 3 months before getting tired of it and selling it.
yes
A resounding YES! Especially now that I have a Marshmallow rom on it.
Just give me the camera improvements from the 6p but yeah this is the 1st phone I didn't upgrade in a years time.
I love it so much I asked it to marry me. But seriously, I may keep it until the 2017 Nexus is released. That's how much I love it. A 2.7ghz quad core cpu is no joke, and will be a beast for quite a while.
Yes still love this beast, coming from Samsung phones to Nexus. Gotta love it!!! :good:
Its a Nexus! Enough said!
Wouldn't consider upgrading until next year at the earliest. Phone does everything I need and does it well. My only caveat is that it needed a microsd slot.
I got the nexus 6 when it went on sale on Amazon. I love it. Takes me back to my OG Droid days when I would root and flash custom roms (on xtrasmooth right now). Sure the 6p is nice but I have no regrets at all getting the nexus 6. I will be keeping it for a long time
I just got mine last week (was waiting for Nexus 6P but saw this baby on Amazon for $400.) I'll own this phone for at least a year or so.
Do I still love it?....love is a strong word. I think this is by far one of the best phones available. But with that being said I am sadly getting bored of the device. And unfortunately neither the nexus 6p or nexus 5x really "do it for me" I'm actually debating on moving to an LG V10. I am over the whole flashing rooting custom rom thing.
I love mine still. The only thing that's tempting is the novelty of a fingerprint reader. Instead of getting a new phone this year I'm going to look into an Android Auto head unit for my car.
In a word, Yes. Best Nexus I have owned.
Mostly. Hardware wise and specs wise, yes. Though the cpu throttling and volume issues associated with it are a drag for me.

Are you happy with your phone? If so why upgrade when it seems that most the newer phones feel like a down grade? If you are not happy, what needs improving for your phone experience and look for something with those things.
Very difficult to rely on someone else to tell you what you like. If you don't root, then tons of support and ROM's mean nothing to you. If you do root, this phone has lots of both.

If you're on the new firmware it's able to be rooted. On my GF's note 4 we got her, I installed TWRP on it. Though we are running an AOSP ROM, so I can't really help you much further than that if you want to run TW. If you'd like to give AOSP a shot I suggest starting with one of Zion959 ROM's. Thinking about picking up a used nexus 6 on tmobile, any known problems I should be aware of? How the battery life on average ? Thank.
If you need to announce yourself as a possible user. Then don't. Skip it the Nexus 6. It gets terrible battery life I'm constantly charging mine or changing the battery. It's a 3 almost 4 year old phone and your very late to the show. In fact its nearly over. Do yourself a favor and get a Nexus 11 or a Nexus 13.
Might as well skip and get the 6P/Pixel if you can.
Camera is so-so, battery life doesn't stand a chance with today's gen.
Well, IMHO, if it's a fair deal for you, and you can't afford/want a newer model, I wouldn't go running from it. Many of us are still very happy with this device.
If the battery hasn't been changed, you will absolutely experience battery problems. With care, it is not too hard to replace the battery and they can be had for ~ $15(US).
You'll want to make sure the USB port is in good shape and not only charges but connects to a PC correctly.
Pure Nexus and lineage are currently actively supporting this device, though Google is stopping updates.
It it's easy to root and flash ROMs. It's a reliable device to learn on.
I started, nexus 6 to nexus 6p to samsung s7 edge to samsung s8 and now going back to nexus 6 there you go

thanks everyone. cant really afford a new phone atm and was looking for something with a 5.5-6" screen and decent battery life running android.
I currently have a at&t note 3 thats ok , but is very limited to custom roms because of the locked boot loader and im getting bored with it. any other phone suggestions that meet my requirements?
It's been a great phone for me, have a few newer ones but I keep using my old nexus 6,love the screen, great front speakers still fast And most important is the Rom development.who cares about updates from Google, I'm sure I'll have O on it soon enough

Thank you for the feedback, is there any major difference in the Motorola and Google models?

I just picked up a brand new ATT (GSM unlocked- I'm using on T-mo) overstock for $215, and for that price I can't think of a phone with a better dev community and support. The battery life is definitely not bad if you take a look at undervolting/underclocking a bit and maybe sticking to black OLED themes/pixel filters. Definitely has not been an issue for me and the turbo charger is, quite frankly, amazing.
My $185 Moto G4 just kicked the bucket and the Nexus is miles better in almost all regards.
