I just got a captivate and i tried to put the phone in download mode to flash a new rom...no luck i tried the two and three button method...no luck. I also tried putting the phone in dl mode by using a command prompt...is there someone out there than can help a noob?
May need to give us some more specifics. I have only been able to get into download mode using the adb method. It may take you some time to get the drivers and everything communicating properly. Google and forum search are your friend.
1) Install the Android SDK.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Not sure if it's required, but I also have the android adb driver installed.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
2) Install the Samsung USB driver. Usually found at the link below, but they took the downloads down for some reason. (Is Samsung about to release an update?)
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
3) Enable USB debugging on phone and plug it in.
4) Navigate to your ../android-sdk-windows/tools/ directory in a command prompt.
5) Type "adb devices" without quotes and press enter. Should see your device listed.
6) Type "adb reboot download" without quotes. Good to go.
Try this... turn your phone off... turn on ODIN in PC... while holding BOTH volume buttons plug in the USB... you should be in download mode
My suggestion is to wait. Do a couple checks before you BRICK your phone. Check this thread for info, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784147
There is a wave of phones out now that have 2 or 3 button modes disabled, broken, or something, but they don't work and have caused hard bricks. Most have had to return their phones.
when i try to search for sdk through the command prompt thats in windows it keep saying it not recognized as a internal or external command...now what?

If you are brave enough to try, then here.
Download the SDK from google. Once done, you can upzip it and buried in there is a folder called Tools. I usually take that folder and copy it to the root of my C: on my pc. So it's, C:\tools.
Plug in your phone, make sure USB debugging is on. Open a cmd windows and cd C:\tools
Now in your command window you should be able to use ADB. adb reboot recovery, adb reboot download, adb shell, etc.
Again, I would verify 100% that my button method for recovery and download work before you start modding. If you soft brick your phone, and your buttons don't work, you are screwed. If buttons work you can recover from a soft brick. I have soft bricked my phone numerous times, I have never been able to get ADB to work, I ALWAYS have to use the buttons to get into download mode.
Can I put the phone in recovery mode using clockworkmod? It doess have to be download mode NOT recovery mode right?
Recovery mode is for installing update.zip files and wiping user data. Download mode is for flashing roms using Odin.
Moved to Q&A as this is not a development question.

if you are rooted then you can do the latter.
Have you gotten ADB to work?
The latest OTA updates fixes the issue with 3 button combos
Once you install the update, reboot, then try to get into recovery or download modes. Should be fine after the update
i just got my phone back after cracking the screen but i still cant get adb to work and i cant install clockworkmod because it will not let me connect to the server
This is a guide from a noob who spent a few hours today on my wifes phone trying to get it into Download mode after using Master Clear.....Worked fine before Master Clear but I wanted all the root apps IE Titanium) gone which the stock ROM update did not do. Being a total noob at Android and the Captivate being my first foray I though I would try to provide noob instructions to cover most bases. Most of the instructions here are scattered and not easy to find or are incomplete and make assumptions. This is specifically for those who cannot get into recovery or download mode.
Recovery/ Download modes are SEPARATE modes for for different uses.
I used recovery mode to "root' the phone AFTER putting the "update" file into the root directory using USB mass storage mode.
I use Download mode to install ROMS such as Stock and the 2.2 update.
My biggest issue was having a device that Would not GO INTO RECOVERY/DOWNLOAD MODE using any combination of button presses which it did before I Master cleared the phone. . Very frustrating. So I decided to bite the bullet and use the SDK mode. This first part will guide one on how to use the Android SDK and Command Prompt.
The assumption is all the drivers have been loaded for the Samsung Captivate.
First you need to have JAVA installed in your PC ( I did not)
The next you need to download the SDK package readily available
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
This is what I did:
1. Created a folder called SDK on my C drive root directory.
2. Copied the android-sdk_r07-windows.zip SDK file to that directory
3. Extracted the ZIP into a newly created folder in that Directory
4. Deleted the Downloaded Zip package.
5. Moved all files from the new folder created by the extraction to the root SDK directory and deleted the now empty folder they came from. (This makes the path to the tools folder simple (as you will need to type that path out exactly in command Prompt)
My Path looked like this C:\SDK\Tools . Doesn't matter how you get there but tools folder must be in the path and the path must be exact
Next I started my Captivate normally and put my Captivate in USB debugging mode. Plugged in the USB.
I then opened the ODIN file I wanted to use whether original stock ROM or the new Froyo ROM
1. Opened command prompt on PC
2. Type CD\ to start at C root directory
3. from there I typed in CD \sdk\tools\
4. The next step involves the typing the command to open the screen you want the Phone to use...Recovery or download
4. Type in adb reboot recovery for the recovery screen (This gets you into the "three button screen" with no USB attached many cannot get into.
5. OR type in adb Reboot download to get the yellow download screen...
From there ODIN should indicate a com port..You hit start and the new ROM will be installed. There should be NO hangups on the indicated steps within ODIN. it happens pretty quickly.....YOu will see a filler bar at the top of ODIN and a blue line filler across the phone as the ROM is loaded.
I used Froyo..and discovered with Froyo I did not need to use the SDK method to get into recovery mode.....Froyo fixed that.
I have two Odin files. One for Jf6 Stock and the new 2.2.
I updated the JH7 FW using mini Kies in debugging mode. That was the only way I could load that FW which did not work OTA.
Bottomline is this is not a Hardware phone replacement issue if one cannot get into download mode. It is all about the FW in the phone. IF you can use the SDK you may likely not have to use it again.
OK ALL YOU EXPERTS Please correct or certify the steps.
Just trying to hep those who cannot read a 110 page thread that goes in many different directions.
Very nice instructions...
This type of detail is refreshing to see. Nice to see that assumptions aren't made. This type of detail can eliminate a lot of questions/posts.
I would just add - make sure you grab the right SDK - 1.5 ADB will not work with 2.1.
Thank You !
Followed your instructions but..
I tried to use sdk tools to reboot into download mode this is the specific comand I use:
adb reboot download
If I type this in the phone acts like i typed
adb reboot
The fact is that I searched help in the comand line and there is no reboot download only reboot recovery or reboot bootloader.
I cant get my kyocera torque into download mode and that is the problem I have also tried to boot with keys pressed nothing works. I want to get the phone to download mode so that I can install cwm recovery through odin
Maybe there is a esier way ?
U can make or buy a download mode jig. Quick search in the Captivate forums will show ya a thread of how to make one. Plus a lot of videos r on youtube as well.

keep getting this message even though I have installed drivers..pc says they work..phone registers that usb is connected..debugging is selected...what am I doing wrong here...thanks
Update Failed
Please check the PC side and devise side status.
1. Power on your devise and select USB debugging on your phone
-Press Menu and then tap Settings>Applications>Development
-Tap the USB debugging check box if it's not selected
-The USB cable must be connected to your devise and PC
2. Check your driver is installed correctly.
3. Close all other applications in the device and PC.
is your antivirus/internet security shut off?
Have you removed all instances of the drivers (confirmed through device mgr&ctl panel), rebooted an installed the drivers again (making sure phone is not connected until post-install)?
What OS are you running?
running windows7..will check on the antivirus...try reloading USB drives...back in minute with update...lol

There have been multiple people that have been having odd results with updating through win7 x64.
I would suggest running the update on a 32bit machine.
will try after work..thank you..post result later.

Exactly. I tried for 4 hours on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit machine with no luck. Drivers were installing properly from the CD included with the phone, but the update would always fail at 98%. First try on my older Vista 32 bit machine the update went right through the first time with absolutely no issues.
Don't give up

I agree. However, I got the "failed to update" message even when I tried to install using my desktop computer that's running Vista32. BUT, then I installed the drivers (the ones that came with the update) to my Toshiba netbook (running Windows 7 Starter). The first update failed, same as before. So I disconnected my Zio, and rebooted it. I plugged it back into the netbook, ran the update installer, and it installed in like 7 minutes. Works great too. So far none of the issues that have been brought up on other threads.
edit: froyo 2.2.1 installed successfully on the Zio in less than 10 mins. i forgot to unmount the damn sd card and this was the really why my phone froze on the "modem download mode" and why the install GUI on pc dissapeared.
piece of cake! thanks a lot guys for posting this update and for creating the Zio forum.
installed the zio m6000 drivers directly from retail cd and ran the kyocera updater. i'm running Win XP on an old-school Dell optiplex.
anyway the update has been taking up at least 20 mins now. the screen on my Zio is black and the message "modem download mode" (i figure that its the tethering part) appears.
why is this update taking so long?
I've heard of varying times. Myself, it only took 6 mins or so, others had to wait more like 20-30.
What does the update program say?
OMG!!!! Its happening to me too! HELP!!! I get error code [0x50015001]. SDcard is out, uninstalled modem driver and installed the one that came with the upate, and still 98% then failed. Any help PLEASE?????

don't panic!
you have to follow the directions straight to the teeth on the install instructions.
1. make sure that you have the correct Zio usb drivers installed on your PC.
2. when the installer window (GUI) pops up, read the instructions. make sure that USB debugging is 'checked.' usb debugging option is the settings.
3. make sure that you unmount your sd card (not pulled out).
4. i reset my Zio to factory default right before i updated 2.2
5. if the update installer didn't appear at first then run it again and watch the progress.
Turn your phone off, Hold the volume + (up) and - (down) and the power button to place your phone into Modem Download Mode.
Make sure you have the Kyocera M6000 Drivers installed on your machine properly first. Once you are sure the drivers are installed correctly you can plug your phone in... wait a minute or so before you launch the update file.
I have installed the update to my phone 3 times with no problems other than when I extracted the file from the zip, I found it worked best running it without extracting the file. I have Win 7 32bit and it takes about 5 - 6 minutes to update.
If all else fails. You might have to download the sdk manager and use fastboot and flash the boot image then do the update and it will put the phone into recovery.

By the way, The updater says 5 - 10 minutes.
Success!!!! ok...I dont know if it mattered but I also installed the future dial suite on the zio disk...I went through first and erased all other zio usb drivers before reinstalling the disk versions...plugged in phone..drivers got the OK..then ran the installer..took 5 minutes plus 2 for reboot..lol..
Also...fyi..I did this to my wifes phone but forgot to factory reset...all of her programs and contacts including adw ex remained intact after update (smoke from ears) oh well..thank god for titanium backup..
So does that confirm my thoughts of when I updated the other day to fix a goof after my original update. My apps and everything were still there after the update. So that must mean that the update from 1.6 to 2.2 does not format the phone unless go into the phone settings and do a factory reset.
Im at the end of my chain, please help me. My zio is stuck on the black screen "modem download mode" ever since the 98% thing happened. Try after try i keep getting error code. Im using windows vista 32-bit, i got the disc that came with my zio, i think i may have opened/extracted the zips wrong or didnt install in order or something. I think i uninstalled everything to do with this from my cpu even the zips so i can start fresh with ANY help i can get.
Uninstall the drivers for your zio that you have currently installed. Install the drivers that are on the site for the update download. Turn the phone off, unplug your battery for about 10 seconds if you need to. Hold + up and - down on the volume and the power button to put your phone into Modem Download Mode manually. Give the computer a minute to recognize the device. Run the updater again and if it fails or gives you an error message I would reccomend downloading the updater again. I have been able to run the updater several times already with no issues.
If you are still having problems, you may need to download sdk-manager if you do not have it already. You can always just use fastboot to erase the system and then run the update. The update will then set up the system partition and update the phone.
I had to do this just a few hours ago after I semi-bricked my phone while messing around with the cpu. What I did to get it working again after "bricking" it was...
1. you will need to have the android folder for the sdk-manager in the root of your hard drive to make it easier, unless you know where it is located.
2. Open command prompt and change to the tools directory within the sdk-manager folder. Mine was located in C:\Android\SDK-Manager\Tools
3. You may need to find the AdbWinApi.dll file, mine was located in the platform-tools directory so I just copied it to the main Android folder then copied fastboot from the tools directory and also placed that into the main Android folder.
4. Put your phone into fastboot. Hold Volume + up and the send and power keys. You can do "fastboot -w" and it will wipe user data and cache. You will need to type "fastboot erase system" and it will erase the system partition. Now type "fastboot reboot" and your phone will restart.
5. Put your phone in Modem Download Mode and run the updater.

i wanted to flash a rom so i rooted the P1000 tab
this is wath i did :
Sync with Kies
1. Download the Samsung Kies Software from here and install it to your computer.
2. Open Kies
3. Connect your device to your computer via USB cable.
4. Unplug the Tab.
5. Go to Settings > Applications > Development > and check USB Debugging ON.
6. Plug the Tab back in via USB cable and leave Kies open. It should try to connect to it this time and start installing drivers.
7. Once it installs the drivers, close Kies (regardless of whether it actually connected to the device or not).
III. Root it Using SuperOneClick
1. Download the SuperOneClick App from here.
2. Extract the SuperOneClick .zip file.
3. With the phone still plugged in from Section II, right click the SuperOneClick app and Run As Administrator (if no such option exists, just click Open).
3. When it opens, click on Root and wait 5 minutes for it to finish.
then i did this:
Patch the Bootloader
1. Once you have root access, download the following apk file and save it to your computer.
Bootloader Patch
2. Plug in your tab via USB cable and mount the storage so we can transfer files to it.
3. Copy the apk file over to the root of your storage.
4. On your tab use a file explorer (Astro File Manager from the Market works well) and select the .apk file to begin installing it. Follow the prompts that come up to install it.
5. Once installed, open it and it will check to see if you even need the patch. If it says you do, it will allow you to click the Patch Bootloaders option. Select that and wait for it to finish.
i hit reboot and the screen goes black it does nothing anymore
please tell me that i don't have to send it away
I Can't Say How HAPPY I AM!!!!!!
I look at the dead screen and BAM there is a big battary : it boots

EDIT: The bootloaders ARE signed, but NOT secured
There are a variety of threads on how to downgrade a DS7 back to froyo 2.2, so it always takes me a while to pierce things back together. For anybody in the same boat, here's a simple guide, with links. Many many thanks to all those that have come before me: TheManii, Giveen, DJ_Steve, and all the others on the DS7 community that refuse to let the thing die.
Download the complete restore file from here: http://d-h.st/iXc. Unzip the files somewhere, but the caveat here is that if the path is too long, the process will fail. Unzip it to c:\Streak, or something of the sort.
Download the ADB+Fastboot package from here: http://d-h.st/NMu, and unzip it somewhere, like c:\ADB
As detailed in this page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1018809),
Plug the usb cable *on the streak only* (for now)
Hold down both volume buttons
While holding down the volume buttons, plug the other end of the usb cable on your PC. Keep holding the buttons until the lights on the side of the streak come on (the screen will *not* turn on)
Once the streak is lit up, you'll need to install the APX drivers. Go to the windows device manager, and you'll see a device with a yellow question mark (I believe it was called APX, sorry, writing mostly from memory here). Right click that device and update the driver, windows will ask you where the drivers are, navigate to C:\ADB (or wherever you unzipped the ADB files). On windows 7, you'll be prompted to install unsigned drivers. On windows 8, you'll have to boot with signed driver protection disabled. After you install the driver, the icon will change and the yellow question mark will disappear.
Now that all the prep-work is complete, navigate to the c:\Streak folder (or wherever it was you unzipped the files to), and execute the batch file "run this to restore to froyo.bat". This will start flashing the files into the Streak. The whole process will take about 5-10 mins, and it will actually fail at the very end. It'll say it cannot locate P23.img. That's OK! P23 and P24 are for non-wifi models, so we're good. Reboot the Streak using a pin, and voila! It should be good as new.
If the batch file fails to start, or closes very quickly after launching, you probably do not have the APX driver installed, or there's a connectivity issue between the PC and the Streak. Let me know what you run into and I'll try to help.

Thanks for the details. I just used it to get my Streak 7 back to Froyo.
Do you know how I can install CWM or TWRP recovery. Tried both but when I try to start it factory reset (data only) option, it simply reset the data partition which tells me CWM/TWRP did not install correctly. When I install it streak screen says stormgr recovery installed.
Appreciate the help.

All TWRP were done by me, so I absolutely know there is none for Froyo.
