Nexus 6 Call Echo - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I call someone on 7.1.1 (Lineage), when they talk they can hear themselves as they talk like a perfect echo. I also noticed that when I make a call, the ringer sound has a bunch of static and almost sounds like it's dropping out until the person answers. There was a patch on January 23rd meant to fix the big "speakerphone echo" bug but I keep reading stuff that makes it sound like this bug was related to actually using the phone in speaker mode during a call, so you don't have to hold it to your ear. The issue I'm having happens during a normal call.
I'm on the latest official Lineage nightly and this issue still exists, even though it was supposedly fixed (unless I'm understanding what people are talking about wrong). It's incredibly annoying and I've even confirmed that the lines in "mixer_paths.xml" that needed to added were there and they are. Does anyone else have this issue or know a work around?

I'm not on lineage, I'm on stock lite and I've noticed the same thing after flashing coolexe's pixel mod after updating the ROM, which I usually do all in one session. What I've found is that something is leaving a file called ftm.mixer_paths.default.xml in system/etc. It has the right run permissions so I think it's defaulting to that regardless of what mixer_path file I've replaced. If I delete that default file, everything sounds/works like it should.

Only other thing I can suggest is to grab an older ROM.zip, extract the mixer_paths.XML, and copy that into system/etc. Set permissions to 0644, reboot and check it.
Even if you can get a cm 14.1 ROM zip.from December, that should work.

Once you have it, just grab the file and push it to system/etc. No need to redo the whole ROM unless it doesn't work.

How can I mute system sounds?

I just got my Nexus 6 yesterday and love it, but i REALLY hate how some of the volume controls works.
I can't figure out a way to stop the sound from playing when I put my phone on the wireless charger at night. how can i do this with the volume settings?
i can't even see a way to do it with an xposed module
any help is appreciated.

Not sure. The fix has been mentioned here somewhere before. My guess would have to disable that .ogg file by renaming (add bak to end). That would also require root as I believe it is in system/media.
Removing the ogg won't help. You have to replace it with a silent ogg of the same name.
Edit, here's mine...

Tempting Android N AOSP

Very tempted to update to Android N (Team FXP AOSP)
But I value my camera quality (Using DRM fix kernel, works great)
Knowing that the Xperia is never going to get android N, due to google removing the Z3's kernel from their source, would it be worth updating to AOSP, basically removing all the features that are so good?
You answered your own question, stick to stock if you want a camera that works 100% well. AOSP camera has never been good for any phone and the camera on Nougat barely works anyway.
Next best thing is Concept ROM, which still has a decent camera
I'm tempted to try Nougat AOSP. I don't mind losing the camera on Z3c that much since I prefer my camera on my G4. But I don't know how to install it. Is there a guide? That's up? Last time I checked Sony's site the guide was down.
Two qustions, how bad does the camera become, is it still usable for simple random snaps to send to friends on IMs?
What is DRM fix kernel?
TIA
Lol nougat barely works. I've been running it for days now. My opinion is nougat is excellent on z3c. I can upload a flash able zip with full Google apps if people are interested

Also could you do me a favour and check which Android Security Patch it got? It would be awesome if PA is up to date with that.

Hey thanks. Quick question, you said you have been running nougat on your device and everything (but the camera) seems to be working. I just installed it last night (and my gapps are working as well now) and I already noticed a couple of bugs. First and most important, i can't hear the person on the other end of the line. It appears that my earpiece is not working. The person on the other end can hear me, but I can't hear that person. Second and minor issue, once i plug in my z3c to charge, the battery icon top right shows the charging sign as it should. However when i unplug, that charging sign doesn't go away. So far i have noticed these bugs, can you confirm if you are not facing these bugs (so I know its my device that is messed up).
Thanks,

Hi!
I'm using the latest AOSP for our devices, and facing thiese bugs too. ( 20160912 ). Sometimes I've got calling bug when I can't hear the other person on the line, but he can hear me. Just a restart solves it, but I've got thiese problem nearly evry tenth call time... And one more thing, while i'm on calling and my phone set to minimum volumes, everyone else could to hear my phones speak... or I can say it, what you're talking about. Like when i set the speak to a loudspeaker, as though it were the whole conversation. The speakers are very loud on minimum volume, and not too much louder on maximum settings. ( but, i think they are a known bug ).
Second, the cahrging icon. Yes I experienced it too, when you disconnect the charger from the phone, the icon remain the same, like when the charger plugged in.. And I think, something gping on the background, because my battery goes down nearly 30 percent by a night ( 8h ).
About the rom speed. I think, it runs very smooth / fine until more than five software parallel, ROM while fast. If more than five program run in the background, ROM start to tear, slow down. If you delete them from the memory, the system will be fast again.
I tried to take a logcat with "aLogcat" from playstore, but it's not working. I remember it from my previously phone age, i must convert it to system app... But now, I can't do this, because i did it with Titanium Backup, and now they not support andoid N..
Anyway, I think its will be a very good AOSP rom... ( without camera :/ )

Call quality issues?

Having a small issue with call quality, had it on every version of OOS yet. People I call or who call me complain that either a) my voice quality is not great, or b) they can hear an echo of themselves for the first 30-60 seconds or so, then it goes away. This is on AT&T in the US. Anyone else seeing anything like this, or is it likely a hardware problem I should contact OP about?
It seems to be pretty common. There is a file called Echofix.zip that fixes it but I don't know if it works on OOS. I only used it on RR rom.

Honestly don't remember. I ended up sending it back to OP, they sent it back saying they couldn't reproduce the issue. A month later I sent it back again, because it was really unusable for me. No one could hear me on most calls. Voip worked fine. They still couldn't reproduce it, but refunded the cost of the phone to me. Bought a Samsung s8+ a few months later.

LineageOS - "Silent Mode until you turn this off" Disables Itself

Several months ago, I started experiencing an annoying issue on my Nexus 6 running LOS 14.1 where the silent mode setting would get disabled on its own even when the "Until you turn this off" option was chosen. I had posted on the LOS subreddit as well as here on XDA about it multiple times and someone had stated that the maintainer for shamu was likely ignoring it because they were busy working on 15.1. So naturally, I was disappointed to find out after upgrading to the first LOS 15.1 release that the issue still persists.
What do I do? My phone's been doing this since January and I tried everything I could think of to fix it, including wiping the phone and reinstalling everything and even that did not work.
Here are some important things to note about my installation:
Running LOS 15.1 (upgraded from LOS 14.1)
Using the stock Open GApps package
Rooted with Magisk 16.0 (latest version at the time of this post)
(I'm going to tag @Elektroschmock since as far as I am aware, he's the person we have to thank for keeping our shamus alive and well and would therefore be most likely to able to help me out.)
I wasn't ignoring it, I just wasn't able to reproduce it.
If this really is a common problem then it is not specific to Nexus 6.

Ah, alright. That's unfortunate. The thing that's frustrating about this is that I cannot find any reports from anyone else having this issue. Not just the Nexus 6, but for any phone.

Yes I have, and I am afraid that I did not find anything useful there. Even though you could not reproduce the issue, did the catlog that I posted on the LOS Jira help? (https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-1373)
Even though that post applies to LOS 14.1, the issue is occurring in the same way in LOS 15.1.
It's also worth noting that I tried installing a fresh copy of LOS 14.1 to fix it, but when I upgraded to 15.1, I did not do a fresh install. Do you think it would be worth the effort to try it?

I had some time last night, so without waiting for a reply, I decided to do a fresh install and I am so glad I did. So far, silent mode has not disabled itself, and I am hoping this stays that way. Additionally, my phone's performance in general seems a lot better. I am not sure if it's in my head or not, but either way, I am satisfied. If the issue pops up again, I'll be sure to let you know so that we can keep looking for alternative solutions.

Last night I had some time, so I decided to do a full wipe and reinstall without waiting for a response. I am so glad I did. The issue appears to finally be resolved, as it has not happened yet, and on top of that, my phone feels like it's running faster. I am not sure if it actually is or if it's just a placebo, but either way, I am satisfied.
If the issue does end up returning, I will let you know so that we may continue looking for a way to stop it from happening.

Microphone stopped working on calls

Hi, I have a Redmi 4a with a custom android 11 ROM (tried a few).
Since a few days the microphone is not working on calls. If I record a video the audio recording is ok, so the mic itself does not have problems.
Hands-free calls work (loudspeaker), but still mic is muted or very low level.
Headset works correctly, with its own mic.
I think the microphone level is too low during calls, maybe some setting got messed up, but I do not know how.
I already tried doing factory reset, cache wipe, full wipe+ROM re-flashing, changing ROM (still keeping Android 11).
Only a few apps have microphone permission: Camera, FM Radio, Phone & now Phone Doctor Plus, which I installed to control the mic and the earphones plug (all working perfectly, all available microphones).
Google Assistant is disabled.
Bluetooth is off, nothing coupled at all.
Any Idea before I wipe again and try a ROM with Android 10 (or 9, or 8, ...)
Thanks, Leonardo

Are you sure it is issue on your side? Did you try it out with several ppl? Might be some issue on the other side, just a guess.
First of all, I would recommend to check out telegram channels/official sites of mentioned ROMs for latest updates.
It looks to me as if you installed some outdated ROM, because i have not heard of mic issues for couple years.
Also join tg channel for our device, where you can request assistance.
Second suggestion would be check for phone caller app from other ROMs, from LineageOS for example is usual choice (you can find it on APK Mirror) or AOSP from AOSP-based ROMs.
If you have Magisk installed, check out for "NLSound for QCom Devices" module, it is a module that includes setting sensitivity of mic a lil bit higher as well as other sound enhancing options. (NLSound Tg Channel), or try to check out whatever module for that matter.
I changed a few other Android 11 ROMS, all with the same issue. Also AOSP.
Android 10 CRdroid works better, mic level is low, it's higher with free speaking.
It looks like a sensitivity issue, maybe I have to change some mixer.xml settings?
Now I'm back to Android 11, Nusantara (unified 4a & 5a), but still the problem persists.
Installed NLSound: not better.
Can I configure mic level on NLSound? Where (or with which app) should the mic level be exposed?
You cannot configure mic sensitivity with NLSound, but during installation you can choose option to increase it. Which i thought could resolve your issue.
I honestly ran out of ideas atm, maybe someone more expirienced will join the discussion.
But while we are at it, could you specify a little bit more, how your mic stopped work properly? Because it still doesnt looks like a ROM issue to me, all ROMs are generic and share same device tree, which already has optimised settings and rarely being updated.
Was it like you installed custom ROM and mic immidiately went bananas, or you installed custom ROM, mic worked for certain amount of time, and then issue appeared?
Maybe try to reflash persist.img and firmware.img from original MIUI ROM, or roll back on MIUI(but dont lock bootloader) and check if issue is still present.

It stopped by itself, without me doing any specific install, as far as I can remember.
I reinstalled NLSound, with mic and volume optimizations. Still not ok.
One question: can I flash persist.img and firmware.img without losing the functionality of the ROM I have now, or should I then re-flash also the custom ROM afterwards?
Thanks for the hints.

Yes, you can flash persist.img and firmware.img without any concerns about ROM.
It shouldnt affect ROM functionality, it is just a pre-caution step, in case any of previous ROM's you played with made some unnecessary changes.

Gotta download Xiaomi official tools for this purposes. MiFlash PRO, or Mi Unlock or something like this, dont remember the name. The one you unlocked bootloader of a phone with, same tool can also flash stock MIUI back, if i remember correctly, According to MiUnlock FAQ bootloader wont lock, unless you choose special option "Clean All and lock"
I also found this instructions to deal with sound problems, check if it will fix your problems.
Spoiler: instructions
For non root users
Code:
Go to the following path
Setting > Google > search > voice > "ok google" detection and turn off both the options.
That's it.
For root users, edit audio_platform_info.xml and/or build.prop
Code:
Navigate to the root directory of the phone
Root/system/etc/
Then look for a file named "audio_platform_info.xml" with text editor of your choice .
Now go to the bottom of the file you will see </acdb_ids> , you need to add the below line before/above that </acdb_ids>
Click and add this line
<device name ="SND_DEVICE_IN_VOICE_DMIC" acdb_id = "100"/>
Now just save the file and exit the root browser
Reboot the device now. As soon as it boots up you may check thr mic quality if its better now or not
If you're still not satisfied with it then you may follow one more step. This will turn off the voice cancellation ( it could cause echo sometimes to the listener)
For this open root browser and navigate
Root > system > build.prop file
Open it with any text editor.
Look for following lines
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall= true
persist.audio.fluence.voicerec= false
As soon as you find these lines make true to false and it should look as follows
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false
persist.audio.fluence.voicerec=false
Save the file and exit.
Reboot the device and check if it's working or not.
As of your wife, there is only one common fix for that issue: switch from 'default charge' mode during night to 'super charge' one, and gotta charge longer in this mode, usually it helps them to switch from 'nagging mode' to 'silence mode' for a while. Apply this fix as often as she slips from 'silence mode', because there is no permanent fix for this issue.
End of the story:
I bought for a few € the miniboard with the USB connector and the microphone, replaced the old one and the phone is working again.
The not clear behavior of the microphone with the various Android installations was due to it starting to malfunction. The last days It was always completely silent.
Thanks to all for the help and the suggestions, I learned some new things.
