ROM Question - Xperia Z4/Z3+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
Not exactly a rookie here, but with all the different ROMS to flash, is there a consolidated resource as to stability and features/functions?
What works the best and why? I'm looking to do some exploring, but don't want to chase chickens finding something i like.
Thanks for any insight.

I would like to know the same thing so far I notice with some roms they don't have all the main key features which would include, speed, battery life, camera quality, sound quality, customization etc. Usually they have a couple or the other but not all. Any insights would be great.

Video tour of roms

I hope this is in the right section. But with many roms and so many versions, there isnt a pros and cons rom sheet out there. It would be nice to know what rom is better at this and what rom gives you that. It also would be nice if people could start uploading short video tours of each rom. That way everyone can get a brief look at the appearence and menus each different rom has, to help us decide which we like.

That can be a huge undertaking for most devs, not only managing the development of the ROM's, but fielding questions and such. While it's a cool idea, it's not too practical. The ROM's at XDA can change SO quickly, it would be impossible to keep up with attempting to video it. Some of the ROM threads you'll see, don't even have screen shots.
I think the main reason is, most of the ROM's are going to be BASICALLY the same, in terms of operation. Past that; it's going to be functionality, how the dev cooks the ROM, and what he/she puts in it. In the end, it's all visual. Themes, apps, wallpapers, and so on. I could send you videos of the past 10 ROM's I've flashed, and I can tell you, you would be very hard pressed to tell me which ROM is which, just because of how I mod it to suit my needs.
My suggestion is to read the threads, find a dev that is present in the forum, find a thread that is supportive and will allow you to find the answers you need. Then try it. From my experience, each Captivate is a little bit different, and yours my respond a little differently than mine will. You just need to put some time and work into figuring out which one will work for you.
That's not to say that there aren't some ROMs that are wildly different than others. I've certainly flashed a couple ROMs that blew me away with what they had, but that is indeed rare.

Yeah, that is true.
Adam has a REALLY good thing going with Phoenix. His functionality of the GPS is hands down the best I've seen. The theming is great, but for me, he's good people, the team has alot of pride in the project and it shows in the thread.
Yes and actually the only 2 roms I've ever used that had good GPS were Phoenix and Assonance/Serendity. I can't tell you which is better, I just know that both have working GPS
the best way to know is to try them

Cezar's Continuum is the best I have seen.
You gotta try each rom out and see which one suits best for you. I'm sure you can try out roms for 30 minutes to an hour when devs have worked on for hours and hours releasing their roms. At least that's how I like to think.
It comes down to how you customize it. all the rims are great, but eventually it boils down to the kernel, modem, scripts, tweaks, and other things you add in yourself. My gps is accurate to FEET in sacramento, and locks in five seconds or less thanks to da_g and his fix. The telus modem helps a ton too. So in the end we all arrive at different roms. Doing video tours would be terrible cause not all roms are the same in the end

Ok guys we all know this is not the place for this lol. The best way to find the pros and cons of the roms are 2 things. 1. read the thread (I know who whats to have to read for what they are looking for lol j/k) 2. Try it your self and read at least the first page

[Q] CM7 compared to Peter Alfonso

Hi all,
Could someone please help me out with the differences between these two, particularly in terms of:
What features I will gain from CM7 over the virtually stock Peter Alfonso
Stability differences
Speed Differences
Visual Differences
Anything else worth considering
Not particularly looking for a "which is best" as I am sure they both have their markets, but more of a comparison on what is included/missing in each rom.
Cheers,
MIchael
Why don't u just flash them and see for your self???

Peter's Rom is pretty awesome, however there is no way to use A2SD with it. That is a deal breaker for me. As far as CM7 goes, it basically contains every new, cutting edge option available. It is totally customizeable, fast ,stable , and has great battery life. I always end up coming back to CM even though I try almost every non sense Rom out there. The only other 2 I really like are Oxygen1 and SuperOSR, both are as good as CM. If Peter ever gets A2SD that could be stiff competition as it is very fast, stable, and smooth.

Need a rom suggestion..

I'm getting the N6 tomorrow and it'll be my first rom device in over a year. I'm looking for a rom that's fast, smooth and stable. Features and customizations aren't important as performance and battery.
What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Obviously what your suggestions here are going to be biased towards the particular user's experiences.
It's like coming to this forum and asking need a phone suggestion, everybody will suggest a Nexus 6 because it will be biased. My recommendations would be look at all of them (or the ones that interest you) and give it a try.
That's my most unbiased answer. If you're looking for a biased answer then it'd be Chroma because it's a ROM maintained by me and I'm quite passionate about maintaining and providing updates with the newest and latest things that I personally find useful.

There's is nothing wrong with recommending your own product. The fact that you took the time to post your opinion is awesome. I know asking people's opinion on roms can be kind of tricky, But It's nice to hear peoples mini review and opinion even if it's, Because they use the Rom.
Question, Do you have a video or tutorial on your Rom, I'm going to run with it, But would like to know more about it and it's features. Thanks!

Certainly there is nothing wrong with it but it feels dirty to lead someone onto another person's benefit. I respect honesty and am a honest person by heart. I try my best to give the most unbiased answer to others.
And absolutely, there are two video/reviews of the ROM although they are on older builds of the ROM. You can see a newer updated feature list on the changelog https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c7wNrT0khaipv-M0Z35OPQ8sxPHO-e9-Rk945fo4iJE/edit compared to the date of the video/reading.

@J.Guido85 Your ROM choice will come down to your preference. Do you want a minimalistic or feature packed ROM? Chroma will in fact give you the most features along with some of the best performance/battery life available. Rastapop will offer you a very light feature set as it is a very minimal but stable ROM.
If you're in fact looking for a ROM that will give you the best features & performance on the N6, Chroma is definitely among the top N6 ROM's in terms of great support, features, stability, and battery life. I've been personally using Chroma has my daily driver ever since flashing it well over a month ago, it continues to impress with every update.
I have a YouTube channel with a lot of Nexus 6 ROM overviews you can check out if you want here. I update weekly.

You do realise that performance and battery are opposite ends of the same scale? And that bias towards one is bias away from the other? Also that every kernel can be tweaked to bias towards either as much as you want?
Basically I'm saying they're all the same if you know what you're doing. Choose based on features then tweak to performance OR battery

Question on kernels

I won't get into the whole "best ROM" debate. I like CM, but saw that it might not be ready for prime time on this phone on VZW? Something about it causing bricks...
Anyway, I do actually like the stock Google experience, but was wondering if there are better kernels to run, that perhaps improve performance and battery life, with the stock ROM?
My bootloader is unlocked, but I have not rooted it yet, just decrypted the file system, that's it.
Any thoughts?
There are plenty of Kernels, just have a look in the development sections. Also, there are plenty of better roms than cm out there...

Without opening a can of worms... any recommendations?
What I look for is simplicity, elegance and beauty coupled with the best performance.
I don't like the ROMs that have every option under the sun... I don't care what font or gradient my notification bar is... I don't need PIE controls or a dozen other things that makes the ROM take forever to set up and makes it far too busy...
I like stock, but prettier, smoother and better, if that makes sense.
best anything doesn't exist. every person on XDA has a recommended kernel, and every person will name a different kernel. so there is no right answer for you. what you should do is try out a bunch of different kernels then stay with the one you enjoy. for me, it doesn't matter which kernel, since I like to set up my CPU my way. generally, kernel are mostly similar, except they all set up the CPU in differing ways. find the way that YOU enjoy.
Most kernels can be tweaked to get the same performance. It is what they are set to fresh off of a flash that may be different. However if you want some suggestions, I personally like hellscore (have to get off google+), zen, and recently elementalx.
no, its not me who wants suggestions.. i think you quoted the wrong person :silly:
Indeed I did. Nice catch
Yeah, I would like a suggestion for a ROM that:
1) Simple
2) Elegant
3) Prettier than stock
4) Not too busy
5) 100% functionality, no broken or missing features
6) Fast with solid battery life
battery life is up to you, 100%. battery life is determined by how you set up the device, which apps you install, how you personally use your device, and by the quality of your phone/data signal. everything else is not that important for battery. it does not matter which ROM you use, nor kernel, battery life is mostly up to you. ROMs and kernels do not decide your battery life. on any ROM or kernel, there will be someone with great battery life, and even more with so so or bad battery life.

No, I meant for a suggestion for a ROM. I gave a list of what I was looking for, and even in reading the various threads, it is hard to tell which one is closest to what I am looking for... I don't want to spend countless hours with trial and error.
Looking for something closer to stock, simple, elegant, prettier, smoother, better. I don't like ROM's that have so many customization options that you spend more time fiddling with it than you spend using it, you know?

OOS Beta or Paranoid Android

Hi all,
So just looking for opinions here...I just got my OP3T and am looking to change from the stock OOS to something else. However, I need something that functions more as a daily driver. Sure I could go LineageOS and stick with what I know from my OnePlus One, but I'm looking to try something different.
Sure I OOS Beta isn't different per se, but I like what I've got with OOS stock so far, but I personally like being on a beta...it's fun.
My experience with Paranoid Android was only with my old HP TouchPad, but what I did experience, it was very good.
So I can't decide, so I'm leaving this one up to the votes...have fun!
I've been on the Beta before, and right now I'm using PA. Personally, I prefer PA because it's so well-refined. The only thing is that you can't really use a custom kernel unless it's specifically made for AOSPA; whereas the OOS Beta you can use any stock-compatible kernel. But if you want something stable but customisable and such, I'd go with PA.
Also, OOS has the forced DM_Verity thingo and I always find that painful to fiddle around with.
What kind of amazing topic is this???
Try both buddy.
I would go for AOSPA, simply because stock Android is better than OOS and with PA you don't loose your camera

Of course I'd try both...if I had the time between school, work, and traveling for work. I just want opinions from my fellow XDA folks.
Normally, I'd love to tinker with both (and I have in the past with other ROMs), but hence why I'm asking here....extreme lack of time.
Everyone is busy. And yet most of us don't need to make new threads or polls to decide what ROM to flash.
The best ROM for you isn't determined by a popularity contest. It also shouldn't be a decision left to strangers that know nothing about your preferences or how you use the phone.
In the end, how you feel about the ROM when using it, is going to be the sole determining factor about whether you like it, stay on it, etc. In light of that, asking strangers isn't much better than flipping a coin.
There are a ton of resurrection ROMs here, so somewhat feels as if you're limited to either stock or Paranoid Android. From all accounts I've heard, PA has exceptional battery performance. It's a good ROM if you aren't into heavy customizable features ROMs like RR bring. Carbon nightlies are out as well. If you're strapped for time. I wouldn't suggest RR or any other ROM similar. I don't usually use stock ROMs, so I can't clarify for which camera is better. I know PA camera doesn't appear to have the ability to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ration I've found that out from uploading videos to YouTube. PIE settings has been updated from your old days of using PA, but it doesn't have a ton of options allowing you to change anything. It's very barebones in my opinion. I'm not sure if that's how PA wants it or if they plan on adding more to PIE settings. PA also has a theme engine feature different from other ROMs. Once again, I'm not sure if that's correct or not. Considering nowadays I don't heavily modify my phone. Development around here seems to be stalled a bit. I guess most of the devs have got the OP5 now.

AOSPA = Paranoid Android ROM, fully CAF based
with "loosing the camera" I mean the quality. Oneplus never released their drivers for the camera. All photos taken with a custom rom are not as good as with OxygenOS. Paranoid Android Devs created own drivers resulting in excellent picture quality.

Sure no different flipping a coin....if you have a coin that will give you some pros & cons. Hence why I asked. I've got plenty of preferences, what I like, don't like, etc. Didn't think all that is something folks want/need to read or hear...as you said and I said, we're all busy.
HOWEVER, I only ask as I want to hear what folks may have to say in terms of pros and cons here. Sure I can find that on sites all over the place, including here. I simply didn't find anything specific comparing these two ROMS here.
So no...not really a popularity contest, my bad on the wording if that came off that way. No need to get a tad salty my friend.

Nothing "salty" was posted by me. There is nothing insulting to you, or even close. Just stated basic facts. But I do find it frustrating when folks resort to insinuating that they were somehow insulted or slighted, when someone merely points out simple truths they didn't want to hear.
You're still missing the whole point. The "pros and cons" are completely subjective (and not objective) between one user and another. The whole point in having all these ROMs, is so you can find one that works best for you as an individual.
By setting up a "majority rules" type poll, you are also robbing yourself of potentially finding the "hidden gems". I've had instances where the ROM that worked best for me, was not one that was particularly popular. And also instances where the most popular ROMs caused me some problems; not due to any fault of the ROM per se; but more due to the nuances of my particular local cell provider.

Sorry, it just came off that way. I was a tad surprised since you've been pretty helpful elsewhere as I've seen. No harm, no foul. :good:
I'm not completely missing the point since I've narrowed it down to OOS Beta or PA. I've looked at others and these are the two that I've narrowed it down (based on videos, posts others have made here and elsewhere, etc.). I've worked with LineageOS on my OnePlus One, but I need something that's just a bit more stable.
I'm sure when I have the time, I'll take a look at others, but I'd prefer not having to keep switching between ROMs if I can help it.
Perhaps maybe I'll have to...who knows.
I just switch back to open beta from PA. They're both very good ROMs. Honestly, you can't go wrong.
