So windows phone gets a much better SOC. Is it possible to dump windows and install Android on the windows version of the 4s? Sure, the Windows version has a lesser screen but it has more storage and a better SOC.

If you want the Idol 4S specs with Android, you might want to check out the Blackberry DTEK60, which runs Android

I too am wondering if that is possible. My dad bought this phone with windows but didnt like the OS. He bought a new phone, but im just curious.
I second the notion, Android on the IDOL 4S version with Windows would be sweet, dual boot with both OSs even better!

The Idol 4s Windows Phone is identical to the TCL 950 android phone. If they used the same certificates on both versions, flashing will work, if TCL/Alcatel releases firmware.

Hi all,
I've got a question can you change the complete interface of a rom, or do you need to port over things? So can we have instead of a windows mobile 7 theme running on top of everything, in a program called Wisbar Advance Desktop, a rom?
Or do we need to port it over from a windows 7 phone in future?
Greets Wouter
i think it would be best to port things over so its in the rom instead, not running on top.
in wikipedia it states
The kernel of Windows Mobile has not been updated for over 6 years. As of January, 2010, Windows Phone 6.5.x was based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel, the same kernel that was running in Windows Mobile 5.0 in 2004. This means that Windows Phone OS is not optimized for modern processors, such as the newer ARM processors.

so i wonder if window 7 will be updated.could be a reason why theres many problems with winmo
When they say newer processors I believe they mean the ARM Cortex family, the ARM11 family of processors which is used in the Qualcomm MSM7200A package (X1's processing chip) is not very new. In fact, according to wikipedia the first ARM11 core was "(---) released to licensees in late 2002." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM11).
Any chance of or anyone know how to put win 7 onto my touchpad? I think it would make a great candidate for it.
Not possible natively as W7 doesn't offer an ARM port, unlike W8, which will. Now W7 via an emulator, that is another story.
As tbaker wrote you -
different architecture -
Mac OS & Windows uses x86/x86-64.
Android & iOS uses ARM.
Windows 8 will be also compiled against ARM.
TouchPad is Snapdragon ARM based.
Another thing to keep in mind is how much source is available.
Android is Open-Source from ground so usually once drivers are being written you can get it up & running to some extent.
Not the same with other platforms (Eg. W7 & iOS on Android devices)

W7 would run like absolute garbage on it most likely.
Windows 7 isn't ARM compliant but Windows 7 Compact Embeded is.
oups no it's not.
Sorry, i reboot my brain :
- Windows Embedded Compact 7 can run on ARM, MIPS, x86
- Windows Embedded Standard 7 can run on x86 / x64 only.
- Windows Phone 7 can be an another option to run Windows on HP touchpad...

I know dos-box already exists, you could probably do qemu under chrooted ubuntu... Windows 7 would probably work, you'd be on the VERY low side of usable ram (~700mb), and I can guarantee it would be so slow that it isn't worth using. A stripped version of XP... might be worth looking into.
Like that :
google "Microsoft shows off Windows Embedded Compact 7 (Windows CE 7) tablet with Metro-Like UI"
Interesting what will it take to get Windows 7 Compact installed on the TP?
More work than its worth.

Windows 7 on the Touchpad - possible or not?
Hey Guys!
As far as I remember...the Touchpad first was designed to be used with Windows 7 (wasn´t it?). After a while they distinguished between the slate and the touchpad...so is it possible, to get Windows 7 working on the Touchpad?
Not in a million years.
Windows 7 won't ever be ported to the ARM architecture.
Windows 8 is possible, but highly unlikely since the ARM version won't be available through retail channels.

This actually has the potential to become an issue - not for home users or most businesses, but because of the prevalence of XP on such things as EPoS equipment and other platforms which require an OS with small footprint and rock-solid stability.
EPoS (and other touch-screen systems) are still being manufactured and rolled out now with XP - and if you try telling a customer that in 18 months they will no longer have any support for their OS it will become a BIG issue to them. There are so many different hardware platforms out there that just getting device drivers to upgrade to Windows 7 / 8 will be almost impossible, assuming that the CPU and RAM is capable of running them in the first place.

Most EPoS devices with XP embeded etc wouldn't be affected as they're are rarely important updates for them anyway as they're protected via other means.
A EPoS for instance doesn't need any security updates that fix vulnerabilities which rely on tricking a user into going to an infected website, you simply deny them access to the web.
Companies will either budget to replace them all as a job lot and move to W7 or W8 piecemeal.
One of my clients is doing just that, while PCs that can run XP are being made they'll buy them and get us to load XP, but eventually XP drivers won't be available and they'll go to W7. They use Citrix at their remote sites, so chances are anyone there who's had a new XP machine will get it swapped with a new W7 PC, and their XP machine will go to head office to replace one of their ancient P4 Celerons with 512MB (I wish I was kidding with that spec)

Because XP is more stable than Win 7 and runs on a much lower hardware spec - thus meaning that you can run a low-spec system (1.6 GHz Atom and 1/2 GB RAM) with no active cooling. That is something that simply cannot be done on anything running Windows 7 right now - and the absence of a cooling fan (plus accompanying noise) is a massive seller in the EPoS market - and other markets as well.
Why worry about support, that's what's google is for.

I thought it was because some PC users were afraid of change. I doubt the average PC user is thinking about all that was stated above. Heck, there are still people running Windows 98.
I remember when XP first came out. People were making a stink about how unstable it was compared to 98. They said the same thing about 98 when it came out as well. We can go as far back as you want. The arguments were the same.
But yeah, your reasoning makes perfect sense for why companies still run XP. Plus a lot of their software is only XP compatible.

Hi:
I current have an HTC HD2 Telstra, and it came with Windows Mobile. Thanks to the brilliant folks at XDA, I have been successfully running Android, and every time I want to upgrade the type of Android I use, I simply replace the Android folder….simply brilliant.
So I now have no need for Windows Mobile, and am looking to do the same with Windows 8 and Android, and I am trying to find which phone out there is as versatile as the HTC HD2 Telstra, and comes with Windows Phone 8 installed.
How will I know which phone with Windows 8 installed will enable me to also install Android in the same fashion? If I could create the phone, it would be a 5” screen, Windows 8, and a lot of power. Anything close to that would be acceptable, but it must be Windows 8. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chaz
With Windows Phone 7 there was never a port of Android to any device and given that WP8 employs Secure Boot to make sure only verified OS-code is loaded and executed I highly doubt we will see anything similar to the HD2 with WP8. Aside from that no one would be able to say that beforehand.
No Windows Phones do what you want.
Why not just buy an Android phone if that's what you want (for some inexplicable reason)?

Firstly, Windows 8 does not run on phones.
Secondly, Windows Phone 8 devices will not be able to run Android (thankfully).
Thirdly, no Android device will be able to run Windows Phone 8.
I think you will need 2 separate phones, or you will have to choose one or the other if you only want one phone.

Only if you have an emulator. Windows phone 8 and windows 8 share a common kernel and a lot of cross platform ability however an app will need to be written for the phone or for windows 8. That said in most cases this is just a case of how you compile it or a very small amount of code change so you can expect the growth of windows 8 and windows phone 8 to push each others markets up.

One word...wait... Android for the HD2 did not come out the day the phone was released. The ONLY reason why it had Windows Phone 7 is because Microsoft used it in their testing of WP7, so drivers were leaked and everyone built on it as they learned more. Android was ported to Windows Mobile devices and most, if not all of them were able to run some flavor of Android, even if was just the SDcard boot method.
Time will tell if there will be that magic device that Microsoft MIGHT of used in testing that ran all OS's (WM, WP7 and WP8) and then you might have a earier chance but, I would not count on it.
The only thing you can do is wait, one of the hacker will attempt one device at one point, if they succeed AND release it, you might have it.
Right now, the odds of it happening is very low on phones that have not been released yet and even for months after.
I wish you luck but, if you really want Android more than Windows Phone, I might suggest to just pick up a Android device.
Good luck

There are advantages to each OS. I presently have dual boot Wp7.8 (pdaimatejam) and Android on the same HD2 (with 32gb SDcard). It is just brilliant. I can run either and both the latest in these are very smooth. Got the best of both worlds - pretty unique.
Just quick question. I searched but couldn't really get an answer. Most of what I found was just using DEX. I thought since windows 10 is running on the snapdragon 835, someone might make it dual boot.

there are developers working on Win10 for ARM, but it isn't quite there, yet. I very much doubt that you will ever have a dual boot Win/Android setup on Note 8, but a Windows 10 shell for DeX is already being worked on and should probably be usable soon.

i am not aware of any official release of Win10 for ARM, yet. we are probably a long way from ever booting Win10 on Note 8 for so many reasons. It is nowhere near as simple as installing Windows in a PC.
There are Win10 arm64 builds available but they won't work on Note8. Or any SD835 phone.
Why? Bootloader. We use bootloader made to load Android. So Samsung would need to release a special bootloader to load Windows.
And just in case if You're wondering. SD835 is comparable to i5 6th gen CPU. So performance in Win10 wouldn't be bad. But 6.3 inch display..
If You want to try Win10 on Your Note, just search for "rdp" in Play Store .
