Hey guys, first off Happy New Year.
Out of curiosity, I want to try Linux for myself and see what the hype is all about.
On http://www.linux.com/download_linux there are tons of different versions. I'm not a developer, just a Linux-newbie looking to explore around to see what's up. I don't plan on replacing my current OS with it, just run it at the same time and play around with it.
So, which Linux distribution would be best for me? And can I use something like Vmware Player to boot it?

Using a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Ubuntu
good place to start IMO
good luck and have fun
and a happy new year to you in la la land
p.s...always use a live cd...this way your see if it works ok with your dell before installing
Ubuntu lets you install inside windows....and its so easy...my mom could install it
so you keep vista and have Ubuntu....then just choose which one you want to use on boot up
I used this site : http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
I need openSUSE 11.1, apparantly.

I wanted a new linux distro to throw on my old machine instead of smoothwall, so I just google "linux distro chooser" or something similar and found it
I've downloaded and burnt it to DVD, I just need time to set it up

UBUNTU is very popular an the community provides great support. Personally, I really like a distro that is a fork off of the UBUNTU distro called LINUX MINT. MINT is setup where many of the multimedia formats that don't work in UBUNTU by default because of licensing issues will work anyway. Decreases startup time.
Hello, vicjan88
Well, Ubuntu is nice, but actually teaches you to do things the windows-way. Yeah, it's so. It's a sort of a good place to start, but then you should move on to something more serious and.. less buggy. If you are just a small bit aware of what MBR is and have an idea of how to better partition your drives - i advise you to chose either fedora core or mandriva. They are a good place to start (my first distro was some old red hat,and it was nice). The thing about a distro for a beginner is that it should have good graphical or pseudo-graphical interface to configure everything - so that one can at least make his linux box feel working as good as windows. Experience comes from practice, so when you become quite familiar with your first distro, the rest will go just fine. Actually it is a good idea to start with Debian. But choose the testing version. Neither unstable, nor stable - they have certain problems. Or, ArchLinux. It is a nice distro, but the problem is that there is few software compiled for it, but the wiki and forums are just perfect. Anyhow, write back when you install some distro. Have fun!
coose Ubuntu, the newer editions lets you install "inside windows" its a feature called wubi
so you dont need any knowledge on partitioning or anything else
I think the best thing about linux is, it's not windows, it's different and, to a M$ fanboy like me, it's something new to learn. No point using Linux, if you're going to use it like Windows
@Ather, I've de-creased your post count.

Ubuntu is very similar to XP in many ways and is a nice, intuitive way into Linux.
Kubuntu if you want it to look more like win.
NUU! Go with
openSUSE or Ubuntu Ultimate. I personally have the following OS's on my pc;
openSUSE
Ubuntu Ultimate
BackTrack
Win XP
Ubuntu is nice if you are starting out with Linux. You might even find another distro which you like more. I use Ubuntu as a virtual machine if I need it, and standalone on my older machine. I also like having BackTrack 3 on my USB flash drive if I need it.
Dave
ubuntu is great,. i have ever used it once,.
I've always been partial to openSUSE, but the recent release of 11 was somewhat dissapointing for me (perticularly with KDE4) as it seemed a bit half hearted. Ubuntu isn't bad and is certainatly popular and Kubuntu is good if you prefer KDE to GNOME (which I personally do)
I prefer KDE, thats's why I've decided to use openSUSE more.
I just installed new OS's yesterday
newest openSUSE
Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition v2.0
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows XP SP3
Pick Ubuntu. It's the most user-friendly version out there and that's the one I've always used. It works on all my computers from the old 300mhz P3 to the 1.6ghz dual-core laptop. There are also different versions of Ubuntu with different desktop environnements. Consider Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (XFCE) and the rest.
If you want to put it on a laptop, be ready for a challenge. While everything will work out of the box for desktops, Wi-Fi hardware is a pain in the butt to set up. Once you're done with that, however, there's no going back, Linux is awesome!
Hello everybody,
I have been thinking about exchanging my HTC Hero for the HTC PRO 2. First off, am I crazy or do I have a sane mind? Second, if I do make the switch, do you think that Windows Mobile 7 will be able to be used with the phone? Please give me your advice of what I should do as I am confused.
Thanks,
Lance
The Touch Pro 2 won't officially support Windows Mobile 7. It does not meet the hardware requirements. That being said, some of the chefs here may try to cook a room with WinMo7 for the Touch Pro 2.
Great Googly Moobly, I'm still debating if I am going to keep this phone with WM 6.5XX being a patch fix and no future for WIn7 mobile in the works except for a ROM brew. This is depressing!
i know how its everyone knows taht windows mobile 7 is going to have major hardware requirements to it. but doesnt anyone think that that would be the problem?
if windows mobile phone REQUIRED say a 1 ghz snap dragon processor and high resolution capacitive screen, etcetcetc, doesnt that mean that everyone is going to have to buy the highend and expensive phones just to be able to use windows mobile 7? if thats the case, then the windows mobile market share wont get larger.
i hope that microsoft doesnt drop the ball on this one and makes it at least. workable on our 2009 devices, tp2, touch diamond 2. etc
Da_G said that MSM CPU's WON'T be supported! If somebody develops drivers, then fine, but I doubt it without bsp and this all stuff, it is impossible.
been asked before, same answer, please search before posting dudes

Had you installed these on Dell Inspiron Duo?
Is it a little bit slower to run virtual machines on this tablet PC (even it's a duo core netbook)?
The Android 2.2 still need to be installed on a separate partition/boot to become a faster touch screen tablet. feasible?
Why has this thread died? i would love to know. its my dealbreaker between getting a xoom and an inspiron duo
Simon_WM how did u install xp in inspiron duo? where did u find the sata drivers etc?
thank u.
kisaras...
he installed it on a virtual PC ( summit like VMware) and he didnt specify if he done it on a duo
has it been done yet
android on dell duo.. has it been done? is the performance better than windows? anyone with a hands on video of performance?
thinking of getting it instead of tablet.. is it worth?
I goggled some info on the duo cause I liked the way it looked n happen to like dell.. the only thing I found I dent like on it was dells "stand" it is super super slow. Utube it and you'll see. Wish it was faster and ran full android other then that I was happy with the specs n price.. Toshiba at100 or the 200 is what I think I might move to cause of dells slow movements
Sent from my Defy. Using XDA App.
Its possible
For me I have the same material (Ispiron Duo)
I M running windows8, Ubuntu 10.10 updated and I m looking to add Android
The Android I have test are 2.2 sparta (Works Fine) and the honeycomb 3.2 (Touchscreen seems to not works properly)
to do this you have to install first Windows an d after android WITHOUT Grub and after that you install UBUNTU
if Grug2 or Grub from ubuntu does not detect Android so look for the partition number for android and customise grub config manually according to thi web site
h t t p : //pundiramit.blogspot.com/2011/08/dual-booting-android-x86-and-ubuntu.html
good luck
(I m tring this at this time)
How did this go, i'm thinking about getting the duo for this reason too. I wish there was more people working on it. I really want to know how the quality is!
I know this post is a little late but I am running ICS on the Duo and it is working really well. I have the RC1 release of the 4.0 tegra port from the android-x86 project.
I am currently dual booting with the Win8 customer preview but I find that I don't go into Win 8 at all any more.
hi, I hope that someone is stil here....i've just buy this dell so I install Win 8.1 and I need/want to install android too....i've found a few things on google search, but not very useful..can someone indicate me a tutorial to follow?!

Hi:
I current have an HTC HD2 Telstra, and it came with Windows Mobile. Thanks to the brilliant folks at XDA, I have been successfully running Android, and every time I want to upgrade the type of Android I use, I simply replace the Android folder….simply brilliant.
So I now have no need for Windows Mobile, and am looking to do the same with Windows 8 and Android, and I am trying to find which phone out there is as versatile as the HTC HD2 Telstra, and comes with Windows Phone 8 installed.
How will I know which phone with Windows 8 installed will enable me to also install Android in the same fashion? If I could create the phone, it would be a 5” screen, Windows 8, and a lot of power. Anything close to that would be acceptable, but it must be Windows 8. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chaz
With Windows Phone 7 there was never a port of Android to any device and given that WP8 employs Secure Boot to make sure only verified OS-code is loaded and executed I highly doubt we will see anything similar to the HD2 with WP8. Aside from that no one would be able to say that beforehand.
No Windows Phones do what you want.
Why not just buy an Android phone if that's what you want (for some inexplicable reason)?

Because I can....lol I like the flexibility of running two different OS, and the additional apps I can use as a result. Keep in mind, I really don't need anything, but if its possible with WIN8 and Android....why wouldn't anyone want two OS on one phone?

Firstly, Windows 8 does not run on phones.
Secondly, Windows Phone 8 devices will not be able to run Android (thankfully).
Thirdly, no Android device will be able to run Windows Phone 8.
I think you will need 2 separate phones, or you will have to choose one or the other if you only want one phone.

OK....it seems that XDA haven't cracked code that disables other OS on Windows Phone. I'm counting on that, but I wont go two phones, I would just buy a cheap tablet.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Only if you have an emulator. Windows phone 8 and windows 8 share a common kernel and a lot of cross platform ability however an app will need to be written for the phone or for windows 8. That said in most cases this is just a case of how you compile it or a very small amount of code change so you can expect the growth of windows 8 and windows phone 8 to push each others markets up.

One word...wait... Android for the HD2 did not come out the day the phone was released. The ONLY reason why it had Windows Phone 7 is because Microsoft used it in their testing of WP7, so drivers were leaked and everyone built on it as they learned more. Android was ported to Windows Mobile devices and most, if not all of them were able to run some flavor of Android, even if was just the SDcard boot method.
Time will tell if there will be that magic device that Microsoft MIGHT of used in testing that ran all OS's (WM, WP7 and WP8) and then you might have a earier chance but, I would not count on it.
The only thing you can do is wait, one of the hacker will attempt one device at one point, if they succeed AND release it, you might have it.
Right now, the odds of it happening is very low on phones that have not been released yet and even for months after.
I wish you luck but, if you really want Android more than Windows Phone, I might suggest to just pick up a Android device.
Good luck

There are advantages to each OS. I presently have dual boot Wp7.8 (pdaimatejam) and Android on the same HD2 (with 32gb SDcard). It is just brilliant. I can run either and both the latest in these are very smooth. Got the best of both worlds - pretty unique.
Which Macs support Windows 8, and what are the Windows 8 system requirements?
Wrong forum, friend; this is the Windows Phone 8 forum, and no Macs can run that (at least not on bare hardware; you can install the emulator easily enough). There is an actual Win8/Windows RT forum as well, you probably want that one.
With that said, I'll answer this one question for you here, because it's dead simple and might save you a whole 15 seconds of using a search engine: Any Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor or later can run Win8, no problem. The first-gen Intel Macs (with the 32-bit-only Core Duo processors) probably could too, but I've never tried. You can either use Bootcamp (lets you dual=boot OS X and other things) or install on the bare hardware.
