Mobile data usage irratic - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hey folks,
I just noticed my phone is having some issues with mobile data measurement. See attached screenshots.
- the raw data counter is way off
- the values shown in overview differ
- in reality, I've used just under 700MB
Is there any way to fix accuracity? Measurement being 50% off is just not useful at all. Is it possible to turn it off completely? I'd like to do so if I don't find a solution.
Same issue for my other SIM-card I use occasionally.
Running on 3.5.4 as I need xposed.
What process does measure data usage? Maybe I messed it up using Amplify.
Thanks in advance, cheers!

[Q] App Data Tracker? Spy App?

Hi guys, need your help on this...
I'm using axura rom and i've always had this problem.
Whenever i surf with 3G, the phone always goes into a data hang.
Meaning, after around 20 minutes of surfing, i noticed there's only data going up, but nothing seems to be downloading.
I suspect there's a bad app that's locking my other apps and been 'stealing' information from my phone.
Do you know anything that can be used to weed out apps like these???
have you updated to the new radios? This helped a similar problem I had.

From a Super Baked Evo #0002
I didn't update the radio. I just used Axura 2.5.1 as it is...
Which radio are you using? (your signature says evo... so, i'm not sure if it's compatible with the captivate).
The current radio in Axura works fine for me... it's just sometimes it randomly stops downward traffic and only the upflow is seen...
So, at the moment, i'm not even sure it's the radio problem...
Coz it works again if you wait a few minutes...
So at the moment, i can't verify it as a radio problem, hence i'm searching for an app that can let me track if any app is causing this sudden 'upload only' situation...
3G Watchdog in the market. Unfortunately, only the "pro" option will show you per-app usage (the free one shows overall usage)
Thank you very much... Will check out that app...
Any other apps that can do this too?

HELP! question about recommendation of rom/kernel PLEASE read!

I have an HTC one m7 (att model) but I believe I can install the regular HTC one m7 roms right?? I won't be needing mobile data.. I plan on unlocking tomorrow or.sometime really soon, I just want to use this phone as my bicycle computer with a certain app. I won't have a sim card inside it, everything will be ran without any data needed.. I'll periodically be using WiFi to update things as needed..
I was just wondering, is there a simple lightweight Rom/kernel setup out there anyone would recommend?
I need sound, WiFi, and GPS working flawlessly.
I need the best battery life possible.
I need something stable without any reboots or anything so since I'll be recording long distance cycling routes..
Is there a way I can maybe disable or remove the modem file to save battery so mobile data won't work forcably?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank u so much!

OnePlus 3T - Cellular Data Usage Counter Won't count Tethering

Hello everyone.
I have been using this device for some time now.
At first, the data usage counter would let me now how much data would have been spent while tethering.
and at some point it just stopped showing.
It shows all other apps, but will not let me know what about tethering usage.
anyone has any idea about it?
Thank you
Alon
Same problem for me on 4.1.5 , and since 4.1.3 at least.
The phone simply doesn't count ANY of the data spent through tethering/wifi hotspot. And it's a big issue.
Does anyone know a fix ?
Thanks

Looking for a stable ROM

I've been using OxygenOS 8.0.1 since it came out and I'm getting sick of the Bluetooth, dual sim, notification, and battery issues. I'm looking to switch to a stable ROM. My priorities are stability, good battery life, dual sim operation, and reduced Bluetooth issues.
My thinking was LineageOS due to my previous positive experience with CM or Nitrogen. Also Any good suggestions out there for Android 8.1?
First of all there is no stock 8.0.1 rom.
It's 5.0.1 based on Android 8.0
Secondly, me and many more users have no issues at all. So, there is no generic problem with stability with this rom. Did you perform a factory reset after you have upgraded to Oreo?
If not, then probably this is your main problem.
Unleashed by my rooted OP3T on 8.0
Oxygen OS is a very stable ROM.
One thing I have noticed that Nougat version 4.5.1 was the best considering fingerprint performance and battery back up.
Oreo 5.0.1 does not has fast fingerprint authentication as compared to it OOS 4.5.1
Sometimes I think I should switch to 4.5.1 for the best performance with best battery back up.

Adding to the above, there is no "perfect" or the most "stable" ROM. It all depends on your usage. All of the ROMS are thoroughly tested, and not built on unstable Device Sources like Samsung Devices. They're all stable, with no issues unless you use Xposed.
Also, I'm currently on OOS OB26 8.0, the most recent OB. Not having any issues. Maybe the problem is on your end?

I haven't had any of those issues, either. What kind of Bluetooth problems are you having? There was a known issue with this device not being compatible with BT on car stereo systems for certain makes (BWM, Volkswagon, and I think a few others), and not sure if those were fixed on OOS 5.0.1 or not. But aside from those particular car brands (not one I own) I've found BT to work really well on a variety of Bluetooth devices (earbuds/headsets, speakers, a number of car systems including rental cars).
Battery life is most dependent on network reception and individual usage patters. Don't expect that to change drastically from flashing a new ROM. Maybe some incremental improvement with a certain ROM and kernel tweaking. But again, nothing drastic.

Thanks for all of the thoughts everyone. Let me describe the issues a little more.
1 - You are correct I am running OOS 5.0.1 with Magisk 16.4, stock kernal
2 - Bluetooth, when i connect to my BT home speaker (a BEDDI) and I play anything on TuneIn radio, the audio cuts out after 5-10 sec. I've found a workaround by pressing the play button on the radio itself but unfortunately some times this launches my previous app using audio which is never TuneIn. This was never a problem prior to Android 8
3 - Notifications and battery are linked I think. I don't receive notifications on a number different apps as I think they being put to sleep in the background. Slack is particularly problematic. I do have "advanced battery optimization" turned on but I have selected to "not optimize" the apps that I want notifications from. Notifications still do not show up.
3A - To partially mitigate this I tried turning off advanced optimization but the battery life tanks as a result
4 - Last summer I used the dual SIM functionality flawlessly while abroad (pre- android 8). In Jan I tried it again with OOS 5.0.1 and it made my entire phone sluggish, data didn't work great, there were lots of FCs etc.
I did not do a factory reset when I upgraded to OOS 8.0.1 which some people indicated could be the cause of the issues. I don't have a problem doing a factory reset but could you suggest a way to restore all of my apps and their settings after the reset since I don't want to have to spend hours setting up my phone again.

Since you already have Magisk, try Titanium Backup Pro. It costs only a few $ on the Play Store, and it's definitely worth it. Or if you don't mind a slower restore and backup of app data, try the free version.

Any issue with other music apps? Any other Bluetooth devices that you can test this on? Might be a problem with the app not being updated for Android 8 (pretty common). Or just a glitch with the particular BT device (also common).

Restoring all app settings after a factory reset can easily recreate the same problem.
Definitely wouldn't recommend that.

I'm familiar with titanium backup. I guess a question I have is exactly what setting would you use to backup specifically apps, their data, and system settings so that I get the positive benefits of the factory reset without backing up and restoring those " problems"

No the problem only seems to be TuneIn (which is a pretty common) with my Bluetooth speaker. Play music, pocket casts, and chrome seem to fine with the same speaker, BT headphones, and my BT car adapter.

Sorry if this double posts...
This only seems to happen with Tunein and by BT speaker. It does not seem to happen with play music, pocket casts, or chrome with the same speaker, my BT headphones, or BT car adapter.

If it is a common problem with TuneIn, then I would tend to think it's the app developer's problem (possibly not properly updating for Android 8). Although it is a bit odd that it only has this bug on a certain device (the speaker). So a lot of layers of complexity here. But it seems more a problem with the app and the device (speaker). Trying another ROM may indeed be a way of eliminating the OS as the cause (or at least narrowing it down).

Thanks for the thoughts. Do you have any good methods of restoring data/settings post factory reset that won't restore the "dirty flash"?

I backup and restore my app data using Titanium Backup, like another user suggested. I've been using it as long as I've been flashing ROMs on Android devices, and it works wonderfully.

Are there any particular settings you like for Titanium Backup that minimize "restoring a dirty flash" ?

Your terminology is a little confusing. A "dirty flash" means you are migrating all user data. You do so by not wiping data, and flashing a ROM. If you are doing a factory reset, you are by definition wiping all user data; which is the entire point of a "factory reset".
By restoring app data after a factory reset, you might be re-introducing data that is causing the bugs (if that is in fact the cause).
One suggestion would be to backup your app data with Titanium. Wipe user data, cache and Dalvik (factory reset). Then test the ROM with the phone "clean" and only install the apps you need to test (TuneIn for the Bluetooth glitch, Slack for the notification problems). After testing for those bugs for a while, then restore app data as needed using Titanium. If the problems only arise after restoring app data with Titanium, you may need to start over (wipe again) and be selective about what data you restore.
The best case scenario, is that the bugs are improved after the factor reset and stay that way after restoring app data with TB.
Another possibility is that the bugs occur even with a "clean" setup (only install the apps which exhibit the problem). In which case, the problem is likely the app itself, or the ROM (as you initially suspected), or a combination of the two. In which case, you are back to trying a new ROM.
But basically, you need to do some testing to figure out what the culprit is, or at least narrow the possibilities.

Thanks for walking through your reasoning. It reinforced what I already suspected. Now I just have to experiment with it.

Mi9T Pro two questions

Hello everyone
I just have two questions for now about usage of this phone. I have standard EU MI9tPro 6/128 version with stock Miui Global 10 (10.3.2.0). After a week i got it unlocked officially and rooted with magisk - added edxposed with gravity box to tweak it like my old redmi note 3 pro. As it is miui i was sure my old problem with redmi note will be gone as my wife uses redmi 4a with miui and don't have this issue. The issue is- i can't send or receive mms messages until i manually enable mobile data. I'm one of those people that have data turned off until i really need it soo yea... On my wife's phone with miui 10 this works like it should. It starts mobile data automatically on mms receive or send. On my mi9tpro it just waits for me to enable it. After enabling data i can normally send and receive mms . Is there any cure for this behavior on miui? If not can someone point me to a custom rom when this feature really works ?
Second question requires explanation as ususal I'm always on 2G to save battery life. Enabling data ends with waiting for anything so i need to switch to 3G or 4G and that is pretty annoying since i have to go to settings click this and that and that. So my solution for that on redmi note 3 pro was a feature in Gravitybox module to add tile to pop down menu with quick preferred network switch . That worked great. On current miui every other option from gravity box works except this one :/ Is there any other way to quickly change preferred data mode ? Like adding a button/switch to the desktop or pop down menu? Other than these two little problems all works great Thank You all for reading. Please help
up, anyone?
Am i the only freak here who don't use mobile data all the time and 2G? I'm sure there is someone here who had that issue. Anyone?
Try giving the messaging app permissions for toggling system settings, network and wifi.
I'm using textra . I gave it all permissions. Everything. Still no go. Same with original messeging app.
Hello. I was able to solve my second question with a widget from nova launcher - it made a switch on main screen to switch network mode so that is sorted. Mms not receiving automatically is a problem still. Anyone have a solution to that?
Sorry, don't have any solution for you but I'm wondering why all this hassle…

yea agreed , 2g on a 4000 mah battery ,this method used to be a old school way , if battery life is important , always bring along a powerbank
Hehe i can understand Your point there. This is the Way i work - i don't want to have mobile data enabled if not necessary.

Yeah, even though I personnally don't care about having mobile data enabled the whole time, I can see why you would want to turn it off and on, especially if you are data limited, etc.
I was talking about the hassle to switch to 2G <--> 4G just for battery life.
Out of Curiosity, and without exagerating please, how much battery life you think you save by doing this ?
I can't really say as i have this Phone for twoo weeks, but seeing as how quickly % go down with 4g and 2g i would Say a Day maybe more can be saved. I know how it must sounds for others. I used to get 5-6 days without charging on my Old redmi note3 pro. I won't get that on this one for sure. Thank you for answering

5-6 days for note pro 4100 mah , are you at outdoor most of the time ? do update here how long k20 pro/mi9t pro last on 2g mode . funny this quick switch widget 2g to 3g used to be a norm , then its was gone , perhaps nowadays data has gone down in price , more cheaper . hmmm isnt MMS using telco lines instead of data ?
It's not matter of cost but more security. And Yes in Poland at least data needs to be enabled for MMS to work. I can update on how long i can go with my usage with 2g.
