Controller For Gear VR - Samsung Gear VR

Can anyone suggest a compatible controller for use with Gear VR & S7?
A few apps ask for & insist on the Samsung game pad specifically & others some kind of controller. Samsung don't seem to make their gamepad anymore. I've had limited success with a cheap Chinese Bluetooth controller but I just wonder if there's a better solution out there?

to expand on the original a bit: I'm left handed. Samsung assumes everyone is right handed. i'd like a controller of some sort the lets me do everything the touch pad and buttons do, but while holding it in my hand. Such a creature exist?

The most common recommendation for a controller is the Steelseries Stratus XL. It's said to work on pretty much any app and game, and is a decent controller. Make sure you get the Windows/Android version, though, as they also make the controller for the Apple platforms.

better stated question

so one real problem is that i'm looking for some way to completely control the device without having to look all over the place - preferably with a controller not the built-in thing on the wrong side . with arthritis, bone spurs, and decayed disks, my neck is a wreck and i'd like to keep my head as still as possible. i know - that's not 'what vr is all about'. 'VR' has nothing compelling yet - just a bunch of gee-whiz junk - i'm not a gamer. but the gear vr, is a great personal theater for movie buffs like me. and being able to attach to a mechanical engineering CAD reader (or even mathematica's offline reader) would be great.
i found the built-in movie player that can reposition (poorly) the screen for reclined viewing, but the device's controls always require contortions my old-man's neck just can't do comfortably anymore. suggestions?

I'm not sure exactly what you're after, but maybe the new gear VR is more what you need? Not sure it's available yet, though.

Ah, that explains why their other controller isn't around anymore.

thanks, but i don't think what i want exists, and may never on the general market. i just want some way to control all aspects of the virtual environment (store, movie player, etc) without having to move my head - it hurts my neck to turn my head in many of the directions required. Didn't choose to get old, but i didn't like the alternative

Maybe pick up a simple, cheap controller such as Pasonomi Wireless Bluetooth Gamepad, Remote Controller for VR Glass Virtual Reality Headset, Wireless Mouse for Android Smartphones and Tablet (Black) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01E3PTTPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_JZVIETDuFaUc4 and have a play with it. That was the 1st controller I got when just wanted to have a dabble. It should at least allow you to move a cursor around the screen with the gear stick & one of the buttons to the right act as your click/OK button. I think some kind of controller is the only way you're going to be able to cut down the head movements (I'm not keen on a lot of that either) if the game/app supports it. I got quite into it then & upgraded to a BEBONCOOL Wireless Bluetooth Game Controller with Clip for Android Phone/Tablet/TV Box/Gear VR https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01EV6NXU2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_tz95rgE8AD6KP Good luck finding something that works for you.

Hey, it looks like the new Samsung is almost the thing you need, it seems to work like a air mouse. Look for reviews on youtube.

yeah - it's pretty good. at least, in those apps that support it, there's 'cursor' control. i'd still like to be able to rotate the display, roll, pitch and yaw. but this is a definite improvement.
---------- Post added at 02:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:21 AM ----------
p.s. i'm not much of a gamer, and don't find 'vr' terribly compelling. but now I can rip my movies, move them to the phone (something I hate about android - no mappable drives) and watch in bed while my wife sleeps. that's all I wanted... now if someone would invest some serious time into the movie players. without exception the interfaces s***.
maybe a good ereader (esp for comics) might be nice, but not critical, and it would be really cool to get immersive 'laser' light shows keyed off the music I listen to, but for now i'll just watch Bogey outsmart the Nazis (or Captain America do the same)

Best gamepads for nexus 7?

I payed for and have found the sixaxis driver pretty good so far. some of the older emulators won't bind all buttons properly (droidemu for example wont bind all buttons for me, where Snes9x will......)
I have a logitech 710 here. I've seen people use the micro usb to otg/female usb adapter....
but, again - i worry about binding issues in games.
Mupen64 wont bind analog controls properly. mario runs full tilt or not at all. the right analog won't bind (which i map to the C buttons in PC emulators, for example).
Has anyone else had any luck, or any suggestions?
This is my first Android device. Interesting so far!

You've come up against the big problem with Android games/controllers, I don't think there's one controller that just works with everything. You end up having to buy multiple controllers or live with on screen controls. I guess it's a profit thing, if there was one standard architecture then sales of controllers would gravitate to the ones that are actually good, leaving loads of others with no sales.

I use my Gametel controller that I bought off of amazon. It lets you use it in a variety of ways. you can either map it to letters or use as a gamepad or even fake it as the xperia play's gamepad. some games don't respond to it properly like bard's tale or GTA

Yes.
I would call that a spammer.
So essentially, it goes down to the apps you are going to use it with.
What about emulation ?
Is there a gamepad out there that works on pretty much all platform emulators ?

Gamepad with best support

Thinking about getting a Gamepad for my Nexus 10. Which is the best solution? Sixasis seems to be well known but do I need to setup every single game to work with this or are most games with Gamepad support working out of the box?
Another question is the root requirement. Since at the time only main user get root I assume the gamepad then are useless for all user except main user?
Maybe another gamepad solution is the better choice?

I love my nyko playpad. Works perfectly with the vast majority of games I've tried it with ( Dead Trigger, GTA 3, N64/SNES emulators, Need For Speed, Shadowgun, etc...). No root required either!
Just DON'T install or use their Playpad software. It made it so my playpad would no longer pair and I couldn't fix the problem until I did a factory reset. A quick Google search revealed that many Nexus 10 owners had the same problem.
SteelSeries is the nicest looking controller I've seen, Googling 'SteelSeries nexus 10' brought up an article about it and the reviews seem great. Kind of expensive though.
If you don't wanna spend any money you can download Bluetooth controller from the market and use a another android device as a controller assuming u own 1 of course

Got a PS3 controller laying around? Use the Sixaxis app in the market to pair it with your tablet. I've used a few different gamepads (bluetooth and OTG) and this is my favorite by far.
I would also like to know some more input on this. I have the sixaxis app and a ps3 controller that I used on my N7 when I had it. I will admit getting it to work with games like GTA3 or any other app that uses a touch input seems to be kind of a pain in the ass. I am looking for an easier solution one that doesn't require me to root or mess around with any on screen mappings or configurations. It seems like the gamepads from gamestop have software that sort of does that for you.
Does anybody know how well these work? I am american and I'm lazy as hell. If I can buy a solution for only 30 bucks and have it work for games like Shadowgun, GTA3, SNES etc without having to put too much effort beyond saying button 1 = jump etc then I would prefer that.
I would like to hear peoples opinions on this though. The reviews on gamestops website don't really offer to much and I just want a good solid, reliable easy to use controller that doesnt require me to root but if someone can point me out to a good easy to understand site to manipulate the ps3 controller and mappings I may take that into consideration. Otherwise any other reviews on controllers would be helpful as well.
edit* I also would like to not use a usb OTG cable. I'm looking strictly for bluetooth.

Read my post about the Nyko Playpad above. Any game with gamepad support (including the ones I listed) will work swimmingly with little to no effort.
Thanks for all the tips. Tried BT controller from play store. Did work good with emus but did not get any function in dead trigger.
Is gamepad just supposed to work in dead trigger because I didn't found any settings for configuring the gamepad.

I picked up the samurai controller from GameStop and it worked flawlessly with all the games. Synced right up to the n10 like a boss. Good build quality and has the option to act like a gamepad or a keyboard. Some games require one or the other.

Probably not your ideal solution, but I use a wired Xbox 360 controller along with USB/BT Joystick Center 6 and, if playing a touch-only game, I use Joy2Touch Server from the same developer and set up a profile. Yes, you do need to set it up with every different touch-only game. With emus, you only need to set up your desired button layout once.

I'm interested in this setup for playing Heroes of Order and Chaos. It uses a virtual d-pad on the screen. Could I make the gamepad work with it?
+1 for the PS3 controller + Sixaxis.
It will work without any setup (other than starting the Sixaxis app) for games that have native gamepad support. Games like these include GTA III/Vice City, Shadowgun, Virtua Tennis, Sonic CD, Riptide GP, etc.
For games that don't support the gamepad you have the option of creating a touch profile. It truly is very easy.
And for those that are super lazy, the website http://www.sixaxisofpower.com/ is a community with user submitted touch profiles for various games.

Sounds like the solution I am looking for. I need to buy the controller then
But one question which is quite crucial. Is it only main user with root who can use it or if it's installed in system maybe the needed files will be accessible by all users?
Oh one more.... The newer Dualshock are they Sixasis compatible or is it just the old ps3 controllers that are usable?

Yep, it's pretty easy to set it up for a game that uses a virtual D-Pad/buttons.
Hey guys, do you need a special cable to first connect the PS3 controller to the phone\tablet or will it work just by pairing them up over Bluetooth?
Cheers,

You will need a mini usb cable the first time to pair it. After that it will pair automatically.

PS3 controller has a mini USB port, but the Nexus 10 uses micro USB (there's a difference; micro is a bit smaller) :/ But if anything, a USB OTG cable is like $1 or so, just might take a while to get to you depending on where you order it from online, and retail stores would probably price it at $10 or something lol
Yes,
The mini USB connects to the controller, the other end of the cable will be a standard usb connector. You can connect it to the nexus 10 with an OTG adapter.
If you don't have the OTG connector, you can pair it through your pc using the sixaxis pair tool:
http://www.dancingpixelstudios.com/sixaxiscontroller/tool.html
You forgot to say u need root to use sixaxis

Game pads and our Note 2

I really couldn't figure out if this belongs here but here I go.
So, wanting a better gaming experience and not having a ps3 controller, I decided to get an otg adapter for my Logitech dual action pc controller. I did this because I noticed after playing around with a root explorer, that our phone had a file to support a Logitech controller.
Well, sure enough it worked......with shadow gun. I tried to get it to work with the dark knight rises but no luck. Tried the Joy2touch app to see if I could get my Logitech controller to work with any game, but couldn't get it set up. Might have been user error on my part, but can anyone attest that Joy2touch or some other app can get a random game controller like the Logitech dual action to work? Or maybe you guys have a better solution?

I got a PowerA MOGA for Christmas. Works pretty nice, I love it. Can be a pain to pair sometimes. Works with many big name games. Fun to use and it holds the phone. Kinda expensive but worth it, I would have bought it had I not received it http://www.powera.com/moga

Download Six Axis App app from the play store. Then go HERE. You'll get your ps3 to work with every game including emulators. It's pretty awesome actually.
Also visit XDA S3 Six Axis Profiles Happy Gaming!
ps - we share same resolution as the gs3 so the profiles for those work just fine with the note 2.

I think you missed the fact that he doesn't have a PS3 controller.
With your setup, you're going to need games that have native gamepad support, which shadowgun does. Madfingers is pretty good about adding it: their Samuri games don't. Rockstar has it on GTA3: I think GTAVC has it too.
I would see if you can pick up used, and hopefully not abused, PS3 sixaxis controller. You can probably get the non-dual shock version pretty cheap; it has not vibrate function. The Sixaxis Controller app makes it more robust because of being able to map touch controls, which is what profiles are. Not all games are can done profiled such as Dead Space.
Other controllers I've read about it, such as Moga, still need game developers to add support. I know there are other blue tooth controllers, but you'll still looking at the same limitations mentioned above.
Overall, it's just a limit of the game themselves. I would say most mobile game users are not keeping a controller with them. Thus, game developers are designing their games for no gamepad use. Maybe is Ouya and other similar devices prove to be successful beyond being niche, maybe developers will add native game pad support

So, let me get some feedback.

Basically have been looking for a few weeks now. I am looking for something to replace my appleTV3, since 1. It is not jailbreakable, and 2. I have shifted from apple phones to android.
Now here is what I am looking for.
1: I would like a device that is powerful enough to run emulator's such as FPSE and N64...and runs well and allow use of wireless DS3
2: I would like to run XBMC
3: I want to mirror mine, or my wife's android (Galaxy S4, Note 3).....or at least be able to sling pictures and videos to it.
4. This may or may not be a deal breaker, but would really like to use my phone to control it. If not remote would be ok.
5. .MKV 1080p stream from something like an external hard drive.
There are so many devices out there, that I feel like there are to many choices that could go wrong, expecially with support on devices. But also would like the device to be powerful enough, but still fit within my budget. Ouya is the last thing I was looking at, but not sure how much I could accomplish that I am after, especially knowing that raspberry pi devices can be stronger. But weaker on gaming aspect.
Thanks for any feedback, pos or neg. My budget is $100, but I may be able to stretch (a little).

I'm using one of my 3 Pi's as a raspbmc server. It works with my TV remote and my phone as a remote. Raspbmc is IMO the best of the XBMC OS choices for the Pi. You will not be able to run FPSE and N64 or other emulators on Raspbmc however because it does not have an OS shell, it just has the XBMC interface and you can ssh into it with putty from another computer.
I will warn you however that if you plan to use netflix on it you will need to use a streaming service from your PC. I am using PlayOn to give Netflix/Hulu and 80 or so other channels to my Raspbmc server. Netflix does not run without this on the Pi because lack of Silverlight. If you have any other questions post here and I'll try to answer them.

Pi runs emulators very well however you won't be able to do emulators on the same Pi as your Raspbmc server. You could buy a second Pi and install Raspbian on it with MAME and whatever other emulators you like. My avatar is a picture of two of my Pi's in a Pibow case with PiGlow boards.

I think you would be better off getting an android HTPC. There are android apps that will do everything you want and you'll get better performance than the Pi can offer.
1) I doubt the Pi is powerful enough to emulate with acceptable gameplay. Android has a dualshock controller app called Sixaxis Controller that probably does what you want but it isn't free.
2) There is an XBMC build available for Android.
3) Miracast has been including in android since 4.2. There are other ways to share pictures and videos to android as well.
4) There is a XBMC remote control app and you can use miracast for screen mirroring.
5) XBMC has you covered.
There are tons of hardware options available, I suggest looking through the forums and seeing what some of the more popular options are.
That's where I have been struggling is finding a popular device. Forums haven't been overly helpful but I am wondering if I'm looking in the wrong places.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Well you're searching for something cheap, powerful and well supported. Those things usually don't go hand in hand. You can try building a HTPC out of low end hardware with integrated GPU, that way you can have a full x86 operating system.
Hmmm.. That's a fair point. Ok. So if I were to do the 2 Raspberry pi, which model would be recommended?

Not to be a jerk, but it doesn't appear you have done much research. I suspect the help you have been given here is more help than you have given yourself
In any case, hopefully my advice proves somewhat useful. From my understanding, if you do decide to go with a raspberry pi you won't have to buy 2 of them. Just use NOOBS (New Out Of Box Software) and you can have multiple operating systems on one sd card.
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads
I recommend getting the Model B since it has 512MB of RAM vs 256MB in the Model A. Also it has the ethernet port and dual USB populated on the PCB.
http://downloads.element14.com/raspberryPi1.html
Worse case scenario, the Pi is great for XBMC even if you find it can't do the emulation you want. Another device you may want to consider is the BeagleBone Black.

Best of luck!

Jerk.....
JK, no I did a lot of research, but basically I came to the forum as a last resort, knowing the answer already, that at this point Pi is too weak.
But, I did find an alternate solution that worked wonderfully, hence my lack of paying attention to the boards. I had an old laptop that I had forgotten about. Reloaded windows 7, placed XBMC, emulators, PS3 controller, voila.....connect via HDMI, instant HTPC.
Thanks for the input though. I greatly appreciate it. I am going to get a Pi thought, because it has other uses.

Using Gear VR to play non-VR Android games.

Okay, so I've done a fair amount of looking around and since I was unable to come up with any information on how to do this, it's likely not possible. First thing, I admit I have yet to receive my promotional Gear VR from purchasing a Galaxy S7 Edge on a pre-order. I have just been trying to figure out what the VR is capable of doing. In particular I've been trying to figure out if it was possible to play games like Walking War Robots or Modern Combat 5 with the Gear VR. Had anybody had any luck with playing any NON-VR games with their Gear VR? I understand that it would be quite unlikely to have the software render these games in true 3D, but I'm more-or-less trying to find a way to play a standard game in a split screen view so it just looks like a large screen in front of my face. I don't think it would be too hard to take the original video output of a game and double it up in split screen for it to be used like this, but I'm no programmer, and wouldn't know where to begin. I would use my phone with an MHL adapter but I've been told it isn't compatible, but that's for another forum topic. If anyone has any info on any of this I'd appreciate it if you could get back to me. If this hasn't been done yet, but is possible, some developer could potentially make a lot of money making an app that would split the video output of a standard game. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any info on doing this.
Yes i'm also interested in this post. When you can only play normal non-vr games in 2D It's enough.
Holy word-wrap Batman. Sorry, your post was very hard to read without spaces but I will read slowly and try again (not to be jerk but it was honestly hard to read).
Okay, so you CAN play non-VR games with the Gear VR but it involves a few different things.
First off, you need a decent PC and a good bandwidth connection to stream to the phone.
Second, there are softwares out there that will turn your games into 3D - the most inclusive one is TrinusVR <---very easy to use, the harder one is Tridef 3D but the results are nicer graphically.
Third, it becomes hard to control with the Gear VR, so it really depends on what the game is and what support there is.
If you have Stream Theatre via the SideloadVR App, try that out. You need Steam on your computer as well. Pair that up with head-tracking such as FacetrackNoIR or Opentrack, you should be set

Thanks for this answer but I think we mean play non-vr android games or apps from our phone on the gear vr. So Normal apps which are already on the phone. When it's only 2D it's enough. Sort of second screen in front of your face. For example I've PlayStation remote app on my phone so when I can start that one up with the gear vr I can play my PlayStation

^Ah I completely misunderstood, sorry! But here is the question, most games use touch, how would you play without the touch if the gear vr is on your face?
I know some games allow controllers but I don't think we can do anything for that yet.
And yes, we can play steam games with Gear VR! !!

No problem?
I've connected my ds4 controller with my S7 so can play some games with it but I was wondering if it was also possible by using the gear vr to open normal apps like PlayStation remote and play as second screen with the gear vr

Yes, that would be very cool if there was a way but if you think about it from a technical perspective, you are changing the game resolution on the phone to split into two screens vs. streaming content which is easier to split into Side-by-side.
I will still keep hope, though! I know there is a way to play Android games on your phone...lol that would be too complicated:
Android -> to PC->stream back to phone in 3D

Not to mention the lag that would entail from multiple conversions...

This is for rooted devices only. But it looks like it will work. Once I work up the nerve, and figure it how, to root my brand new GS7 I'll give it another shot. Thanks for the add!

Notice they don't mention that in their app description in the play store?

Also not for an S6 apparently. Supports something like 11 devices.
This is how
I have been playing emulator games in VR since yesterday (legend of dragoon, ff9), and even watched a little vr porn.
You need to get PACKAGE DISABLER PRO. It does cost $1.95, but its more than worth it. I registered just to post this so i cant link yet
Disable gear vr service, then you can do whatever you want in VR. This requires no root. Also apps that work with cardboard can work with hear vr. So in my case epsxe emulator has cardboard support, which means gear vr Support
Thank me later like drake

This is old news. Except the "do whatever you want in VR". Just isn't true.

Seems you missed the point of my original post. I realize I can port PC games to my phone for VR use, but I want to play games that are meant for android on my gear in the original format, just split screen for the image of a large screen directly in front of me. And what we're you talking about word-wrap? There's clearly a space between all of my words. Shall I double space for you next time?

Oh, great! I can imagine the s7 edge won't be one either then.

My apologies for misunderstanding, that native SBS app seems worthy but have not tried it with a rooted device yet. As for your word-space issue, I did not see any paragraphs so the sentences were hard to read. Good luck.
