Memory Lag Band-Aid Fix For 1GB Units - MTCB Android Head Units General

Hey, just wanted to point my fellow MTCB users to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/mtcd-discussion-questions-development/food-slow-mtcd-units-t3533764
I used the settings menu and only disabled Google Play Services. Yes, this will break google apps functionality particularly if the app requires a google account to be logged in. Google maps (Online) works and still has traffic functionality as well but no history or saved locations. Multitasking while using Maps so far has been much improved to the point where I can actually now multitask while using maps. No more waiting 5+ minutes for Maps to start working or switching between apps. Other users are reporting that it helps while using other various nav apps as well. (I am using a 5.1.1 Rom)
I do get a notification about updating Services when maps is launched but totally worth for me. I'm certainly no dev but a stripped down version of play services that can work with current google maps would be a perfect workaround for me. If its useful for you guys please give a thanks to Nomader0.
Also, please don't mention upgrading to 2gb of ram. That is an obvious fix for the memory shortage but is not something every user is willing or able to do.

I improved performance by removing a lot of what I perceive to be bloat. Through trial & error, I found the following items safe to remove:
1.0 (backview)
APK Installer
Basic Day Dreams
Black Hole 1.0
Bluetooth (widget)
Bubbles
Calculator 5.1.1
Calendar 5.1.1
Calendar Storage
CanBus 5.1.1
Com.Android.Wallpaper.HoloSpiral
Contacts 5.1.0.2
Contacts 5.1.1
Contacts Storage
Control Settings 1.0
Digital TV 1.0
Documents 5.1.1
Downloads 5.1.1
DVD 1.0
DVR
Email 7.0
Exchange Services 5.1.1
F Cam 1.0

Gmail 5.00
Google Calendar Sync 5.01
Google Contact Sync 5.01
Google Pinyin Input 3.3

iPod 1.0
iPod 1.0
Magic Smoke Wallpaper
MMS Services 5.1.1
MMS Google
Music 1.0
Music 1.0 (widget)
Music Visulisation Wallpaper
OEM 1.0
Phase Beam
Photo 1.0
Photo Screensaver
Pico TTS 1.0
Print Spooler 1
Radio (widget)
Sync 1.0
USB iPod 1.0
Vehicle 1.0
Video 1.0
Weather
In addition to those which I noted down, there's probably other obvious apps such as any unused live wallpapers and stuff. Please note that I found "TV 1.0" unsafe to remove, even though I haven't got a TV tuner. If you remove this app, after a boot, it will have to reboot again. So, it gets to the launcher from a cold boot the reboots after a few seconds. From then on, it's OK. This is odd, it must be relying on something within that app even though I don't use it.

Could you please list your specs (unit, Android version, rom, etc.)

Did you use a particular app to remove all of those, or can they all be removed via the standard menus?

Already disabled some with ice box on MCTD with Malaysk ROM. With your list I gonna try to disable few more. Wonder what this one do:
CanBus 5.1.1
Control Settings 1.0
Vehicle 1.0
I disabled TV 1.0 too I'll check what gonna happen.

Don't forget to checkout the work being done with microg (https://microg.org)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...nt/mtcd-microg-install-massive-speed-t3581439
I came across microg when I started this thread but my digitizer broke soon after. Never got a chance to try it myself. People have got it working on mtcD not sure if anyone on mtcB has tried it yet.

I have ROM with MicroG and it works great but its always worth to disable some apps to safe memory. On my unit it boot fine without TV 1.0

Which stock apps are safe to remove from Rogers Captivate i896? Bloatware.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of apps that are safe to uninstall from the i896 Rogers Captivate that won't give me headaches. I have rooted and got Titanium Backup but I'd like a list that tells me what's safe and what's not. I've seen lists for the AT&T cappy but nothing for my phone. I've searched both Google and XDA with no results. Either it's not there or I'm too dumb to find it.
Also if you know what each safely removable app does or any dependencies or issues that might arise later from removing would also be helpful.
Any takers?
Could you list the stock apps? Don't have a Rogers... and I searched the Perception forum that Design Gears has... and no dice.
I'll get to it in awhile, surfing from work so I don't have time to post them this second. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
In the meantime if anyone knows of a list or can share the list here before I get to it would be much appreciated.
Ok, so I guess I did manage to get around to it today.

I understand Rogers doesn't load the phone with crapware like AT&T does but a solid list of what's safe and what's not like the AT&T bloatware topic.
If you are not sure which ones are Rogers Apps and which are I can probably assist with that.
These should be able to be removed without issues... but as with anything - backup backup backup and only remove one at a time to see if it gives you issues.

I know some of these are live wallpapers and should'nt be an issue if you can get them to un-install. The others I didn't know what they were or they were 3rd party apps:
RoseEUKor 1.0 ?
Luminescence 1.2.5?
Magic Smoke Wallpaper 2.1-update?
Dandelion 1.2.5?
ChocoEUkor 1.0?
Aurora 1.2.5?
Blue Sea 1.2.5?
Aldiko eBook1.0
But.. the phone is so dependent on the apps that run in the OS that removing anything else (i.e. system files or the Y! Clock) could cause bad things to happen.
I actually vetted the list that Titanium Backup gave me to remove all third party apps. Strangely things like Layar come pre-installed on the Rogers Cap. I can't imagine uninstalling something like that would do harm but that's my problem, I just don't know enough about what is dependant on what. Other Rogers Apps are probably safe as well but I don't want to run in to issues down the line with my provider. The Samsung Apps seem totally useless to me as well, but again, dependencies is my issue.
A lot of what I listed I know shouldn't be touched but I figured it couldn't hurt to list everything that came stock so we can examine it more. I know I can't be the only one wondering about this.
Bump.
Is anyone else willing to have a crack at this? I can't be the only one wondering about it.
First off, any apps that you have on your phone that are safe to remove on the AT&T version should be safe for you to remove also.
To answer your last question, you can remove layar, but before you do go in the market and uninstall any updates for it. I had issues removing it if I didn't uninstall updates first.
Here is a description of most of the system apps and whether they are safe to remove or not. (this was made for the i9000, but is a good guide for us too)

Phone Tracker

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm struggling to find any tracker app that can actually provide my phones location. I've searched through the forum but can only find old posts.
All apps (lookout, wheres my droid, android lost) can all send messages to email accounts but none can pinpoint my position!
This used to work, I'm starting to think it must be a frozen app (that is needed) or ROM issue etc.
Has anyone managed to get their GPS position working?
I am on odexed JVR (with loads of apps removed/frozen)
Thx Dudes.
I would also like to hear about the same.
If you provide a list of the apps you have frozen, I'm sure someone could let you know whether or not one is necessary.
Personally, I use SeekDroid to remotely locate my phone, and I have absolutely no problem acquiring its GPS location.

Hmm... does Google Maps work? Or is your GPS troubles specific to those lost-phone-finding apps?
Google maps and navigation work really well, GPS accurate to 10m most of the time

"Safe to Remove Applications" for our Sprint GS4's List!

On the Sprint GS3 we had an "Applications safe to remove" thread and it told you all the bloatware/unnecessary apps that you could remove without harming your phone. Actually HERE is the thread! It'd be awesome if someone could do something like this for our GS4's!
UPDATED: All credit to @Nut_House for the list. He froze A LOT of stuff, so keep in mind freezing some of these apps will cause other stuff on your phone to not work properly!! You can be a bit more selective and freeze/uninstall just the Sprint stuff or whatever you want! Also you can go to the ForceROM OP and look at his list of uninstalled apps as well!

Here's a list of files I froze with TiBu just after receiving my phone when still running stock MDC. I ran this way for two weeks without any problem You should be able to use the same list and just change any references to MDC to MDL. The only reason I quit using this configuration is that MDL came out and I decided to run Unknown's ForceROM to cut down on the number of frozen files.
I actually started with the list from VegasRooted and want to thank him for his work on the S3.
Keep in mind, I like to run pretty lean. You will almost certainly want to be a bit more selective when freezing apps as your needs are unlikely to be the same as mine. Still, there's a ton of crapware to be frozen, even if you leave the Google and Samsung apps alone.
You are strongly encouraged to freeze apps instead of removing them completely. At a minimum you should freeze them for several days before deleting, just to be sure everything works correctly. Also, be sure to clear data first before freezing or you are likely to get FC's.
Finally, as always, be sure you have a current nandroid backup to fall back on, just in case.

On the Sprint GS3 we had an "Applications safe to remove" thread and it told you all the bloatware/unnecessary apps that you could remove without harming your phone. Actually HERE is the thread! It'd be awesome if someone could do something like this for our GS4's! :good:
Sorry if this is in the wrong section!

Forcerom lists all the apps that were removed in the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40985707here. Maybe go through that and remove what you like?
Sent from the rabit hole.
You will lose features and have issues when freezing or uninstalling apps people just don't usually notice. For instance if you freeze or uninstall SVoice the camera will freeze if you try to use the voice control feature.

Never found a need for S-Voice. Good job on the list! I make it my goal to remove all apps that are useless to me. That's why I think the authors of ForceRom and Kuban are superb.

Titanium or any other system app remover app are really the only choices here. With Root Explorer and other file explorers, you need to know the actual file names and there are no file names listed in this thread.
You should always freeze before deleting.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.
Anttek app manager also works for deleting or freezing apps

Why do you say that?

Certainly everyone will pick and choose different items to remove based on their personal usage, without removing everything. I also like only having items installed that I actually use, anything else is considered useless bloat. For example I remove the gmail app and prefer the stock email app to handle all my emails including gmail. I also remove the stock Voicemail app since I use Google Voice.

Because that way you clearly see whether it affects any other functions you use without permanently removing it from your system.

[Q] Lags even after crap removal... Task switcher, camera picture review.

I had my S6 for about a month now, and currently on the latest AOE2 version.
I have mine rooted and there are about 40 disabled apps. That's insane.
Now, with regular use, when I press the task switcher (multitask) on the left of the home button, there's always a 1 second delay, and then the card stacks pop up.
Taking photos is much faster than my previous devices, and I like that. But when switching to review my photos from the camera, it lags another 2-3 seconds.
I'm not using power saver mode, and memory usage seems to be fine.
Is everyone else experiencing similar lagginess? Or am I just too sensitive to lag?

I had similar issues when I removed some stuff from my ROM. I don't remember exactly what I put back but slowly 're-bloat' until you find the app that needs to be enabled.

So you think it's an app that needs to be running for smooth operation?
Hmm.. okay, I'll definitely try reenabling some bloat piece by piece.

Yea if I remember correctly it was preconfig or something similar I reenabled, along with a few others. Sorry, I messed with it at work last week so I've forgotten lol

Do you see anything that might be causing the problem?
I don't think I did any hardcore disabling of apps.

Are you running a theme other than the default? I found a significant lag after applying themes. Going back to default fixed it.
A
No themes. I tried some but then came back to stock theme. I didn't notice more lag with theme though.
Honestly, I didn't like the lag and poor battery until I massively changed the device.
I posted the steps to "fix" the phone here:
Non-Root:
http://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/345tt9/galaxy_s6_and_s6_edge_lag_and_battery_improvement/
Rooted:
http://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/383f2j/g6_and_g6edge_lag_and_battery_improvement_steps/
And when I was finished, I de-bloated further down to the default apps below. I then added the apps that I use after establishing a baseline.
Yes it is ridiculous to have to go to this length to get a reliable, usable phone but I enjoy the process and would have done this even if the phone worked perfectly out of the box.
Remaining apps after de-bloating.

Do you see anything that might be causing the problem?
I don't think I did any hardcore disabling of apps.

I don't see anything that would cause issues, I've removed or disabled everything you have disabled.

I would look again, You've got some of the bloat still in there. I am using a ROM that has been tweaked as well.

I hope you mean there is some of that in the ROM I released, because yes there is. I have disabled even more via Titanium Back-up for my personal usage. If you know what I am personally using and/or have used I'm a bit concerned for my safety lol.

On a more serious note, I am playing with the multitasking changes in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/general/s6-ram-management-discussion-t3128229
It seems to improve multitasking, but I seem to be experiencing some stutter that I don't remember. Now I've got to a/b test the new vs. old build.prop and see if I am crazy.

Master Debloat List

This list will give you two gigs to play with instead of the stock 200mb (or was it 400mb?). If you are feeling skippy, get a high speed micro-sd card and your apps there. Link2SD also has a wonderful option to swap different programs (read: updates) from the data to system partition.

Thanks for this list!
Odd, removed almost everything from the safe to remove list, and only gave me a little over 200 MB free.... did i miss something?
Unlike Windows which uses a file manager as a shell, Android uses a hardware, driver and software environment. You will need to use a few tools (ah development!) to access most areas of Android. Link2SD will work for our purposes. Using the reboot method here will leave you some files on both your system and data partitions. Between the two is about 2 gigs, but it is more like 1.7gigs. Move everything to your system partition. The proper way to do this, is to use the system partition for critical or system files - I would use this for anything important too. You will need to integrate files updated via the Google Play Store into your system partition - someone needs to build an app that does this automatically or a cleaner or something. Use your data partition for temporary storage or for games. Not all apps can be transferred to the ad card, keep this in mind when going on a download binge getting all of your favorite apps under one roof. It will be a pain in the neck transferring files between partitions. Large apps will prove to be a problem if their data is cover the space requirements on your phone are insufficient. I think there is an app to transfer data from apps to the we care or mount something like the Bob folder there, I am unfamiliar with it, but I believe it is similar to a Linux function where mounted folders can have shared links.
I am under the impression HTC made this phone as a disposable unit or for those that want to get under the hood. E.G. there are over 2gigs of under-the-hood system files taking up space. The most obvious being sound files which can't be accessed via normal file manager as audio files. Deleting theme would consolidate space etc. I have yet to entertain the idea and have yet to reboot this far. It is promising as such rooms like cyanogen are 200-500mb and stock is like 800mb sand stock unloaded iirc is 1.4gb.
During my initial tests between freezing apps to see if it affected system stability or not, I had one fly under the radar - TetherGuard is used to activate tether. I've updated the list to reflect this, but my current build doesn't have it - I'm looking into restoring it without having to resort to a backup.
Please keep this in mind when debugging your phone; you should always have a master backup and a backup of your latest build on your SD-Card or computer. Incremental builds are a must.
In other news, I've found a way to remove the ringtones to further debloat your phone - there is an app called "Ringtone Remover" at the Google Play store. It will restore about 25mbs of free space. That is an app right there folks!

if your saying what I think you are, Titanuim Backup does this. "Integrate Updates into Rom" or something.... Ive heard that it can break things in the stock (and stock based) roms though. Hope this helps
I've gone in and booted to a write enabled kernel then went on and deleted bloatware previously undeleteable and moved my main programs to the system partition. From there, id ankles to recover able 400 MB in the data partition with still having about 600 MB in my system partition and I can report no issues whatsoever. I removed almost everything in the list that's safe except for a couple things I want to keep and installed and updated things previously unable to like busybox. Rebooted and was back on the factory kernel and everything works perfectly. Made a system backup before ask this incase anything went wrong. Once everything was working, I made a backup of how things are after debloating and now I have the perfect system. Phone is running without issues. Maybe I'll make a detailed tutorial after I remember how I tried it first lol.

Did you lose your dialer along the way? or did I just hit it by accident? either way when I got done my dialer was gone (replaced with whatever was handy in the playstore so no biggie)
No. Didn't lose thatm good things about backing everything up is if you mess up, is all still good
One observation, if you remove the Qualcom iZat, you will have issues with location services. I would highly suggest not removing that.
Can anyone send me fusedlocation apk I uninstalled it by accident now my widget on my home screen doesn't work. Thanks

I had to unroot and factory reset my device thinking it would restore the download manager app but it did not. I really don't know what to do right now. Please I need your help.
Thanks in anticipation.

I have very limited knowledge here, I can't get much done without following a tutorial... That said, I would try finding the downloader APK and sideloading it. Let me know if you can't find the APK, and I'll see if I can rip mine for you.
Edit: Clarification... The apk. I will rip my apk for you. Nothing else of mine will be ripping.. Thank you.
I borked the fork like a dork
I accidentally deleted HTC Bluetooth Share instead of Bluetooth le profiles and now my Bluetooth doesn't work. Anybody got the apk for that?
