Least RAM hungry launcher

Over the past month I have used the following launchers, tw launcher, android launcher, and adw.launcher -and adw.launcher is always using half the RAM of the other two
tw launcher ~ 34-35 MB
Android launcher ~29-30 MB
Adw.launcher ~14-15 MB
I was wondering if any of you ruining launcher pro could post how much RAM it is using on your phone and if anyone could confirm what I have found with the other three launchers. Feel free to post any other launchers RAM as well if you want.
LP
My LP is running at 11.6 Mb of ram with absolutly nothing on the screen, i mean no widgets no icons nothing!
Two launchers i would suggest to you are Zeam and Helix, they are both supposed to be low resource!
I use lp and it currently uses 13.4 with many widgets, five screens, there docks
Downloaded zeam for the heck if it and after throwing a few random widgets on it was just under 13
I got rid of tw and android launcher for just this reason....ram hogs
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.
Thanks for the info. At some point I wil def give lp a look, and probably zeam and helix as well.
While I am not surprised that samsung's tw launcher is resource heavy, I'm a little surprised that android launcher has need of that much more memory then adw or lp, as adw and lp are every bit as functional (even more functional actually).
My LauncherPro with many widgets and icons and custom PNGs is running at 16.7MB and smooth on 2.2 beta.

LauncherPro performance :(

Hi,
I just got my Nexus S, and so far so good.
I installed LauncherPro and unlocked the Plus version as well.
But, it seems I don't see smooth buttery scrolling of the home screen.
My LauncherPro settings:
- Keep in memory = checked
- Enable scrollable widget = checked
- Number of home screen = 5
- Number of dock = 1
- Use 4 rows and 4 columns
- Memory profile = High
- Elastic scrolling = No
- High quality scrolling = No
- Minimum scrolling speed = 50
It is fast though, but it just not smooth ...
Am I expecting too much?
Update:
I don't know how to explain it, but something like this:
I can still see the "steps" when scrolling home screen (I am not using transition effect).
Horizontal scrolling movement by positioning the x coordinate of screen-image:
x := x + 10 ... this is fast, but not smooth as you can see the 10 pixels movement steps
x := x + 1 ... this is smooth, but might not be fast
I am hoping the LauncherPro re-write will greatly improve this, or utilizing the GPU if possible (NOT!).
Launcher pro kinda sucks now. The Guy hasn't supported it for a while now. I would stick with the stock or adw
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I would give ADW a try later.
How do you deactivate LauncherPro?
Just go into apps manager, go to LauncherPro app and "clear defaults". Once you hit the home button again you'll be given a choice of which home launcher to launch.
LP is buttery smooth for me.
The guy who coded it says he's rewriting it from scratch as the current version is based on Google's stock launcher and what he wants todo is inefficient with google's code. It's why I don't use it since gingerbread.

Lp plus is smooth as ever for me

Adw launcher ex to be exact. Its different from the original version

It's not as smooth as LP is on the Vibrant or Nexus One... that's a fact. It still is smoother than most launchers, but until he updates it for the Nexus S, it won't be as smooth. Although using an overclock kernel helps =)
LauncherPro+ had appalling stutter on my Nexus S (particularly during the leap animation), but I found it was fine after setting the Memory usage preset to Medium and changing the Homescreen cache type to Compressed.
Adjusting the ondemand CPU governor in SetCPU (Sampling rate 20000, Up Threshold 50) helped as well.
LauncherPro has always been very smooth for me. I prefer the features of ADW, but scrolling is a bit choppy on my nexus s (with cm7 rom). On LP, I use the 'low' memory usage setting with 5 homescreens & lots of Widgets
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
launcher pro vs adw ex
I tried to use ADW ex and loved it just found myself going back to launcher pro plus because of the sense like widgets (bookmarks, twitter, facebook, calendar, friends). I know that I can find widgets separately but none have looked as good as these and been scrollable too. I like the transitions of ADW and all the customizations but yeah just not enough to get me away from launcher pro.
The one thing that bothers me about LP is how the 3D app effect is laggy.
Same here, my LauncherPro on my Nexus S isn't nearly as smooth as it was on my Nexus One. I've switched to ADW Launcher EX and then wasn't happy with the app drawer performance and now I'm using Go Launcher. Pretty satisfied with Go Launcher and it's free so whatever. But I really hope the LauncherPro rewrite solves all the problems with it being slow and such.
Stock launcher is lightweight and easy

go launcher definitely feels smoother than LP.
Just be weary of GO Launcher's permission requests. Seems to be a whole lot.

Yeah that's one of three reasons I've not tried our yet. I find it strange for it to need all of them
Agree, it is even slower than on my HTC Desire ...
And I don't have much widgets on it ...
Yeah, I think this is just Nexus S ... smoothness is not one of it's features.
I can live with it, and the "waiting game" for an update from Google is nice
Especially if I can walk into all my Android friend owners who still stuck in 2.2 or less

[Q] GN very laggy compared to S2??

Hi,
I just bought a Note to replace my S2.
Before shelling out the money and signing a 2 year contract I read tons of reviews and opinions here on xda.
The general consensus was that the Note is as snappy as the S2.
My personal experiences sadly cannot confirm this...
My Note is VERY laggy .. it behaves worse than my ancient Galaxy S1 ...
I am on 2.3.6 KKA stock.
Has someone any idea what to do?
Is there any decent custom rom out there which can bring back the snappy experience of the S2?
P.S.
On s2 I used to use the MIUI ROM
P.P.S.
Custom launchers are working terribly on the Note. Tried ADW and Launcher Pro. Had to give up because it were unusable.
Its not Note issue but Samsung's filmwares.Im sure the next updates will blow up our monster.
Try latest filmware XXKL3 and you will notice improvment on your Note.
Plus with KL3 the third part launchers not lug at all (not perfect but closed.Im using zeam laucher which is perfect not lugs)
So dont worry my friend...Be patient...
Devs working hard but its very early for good custom rom like sgii...
Very strange, I had a Galaxy S2 prior to my Note.
The Note is just as smooth as the S2.
I also had a Galaxy S 4G T959 "S1" prior , and of course the S2 and Note blows it away in term of smoothness. Might be some kind of software or hardware related issues with yours?
I don't know what to tell ya...
I have a rooted Note running the stock ROM (KJ4), and it's just fine!
No slowdowns here.
I wouldn't say that Note is laggy. It's fast but the user interface experience is choppy. It's the sheer number of pixels to push + not hardware-accelerated UI (and Android-specific UI problems). I would expect it to get better, especially with ICS. For now - a little OC + KL3 soft + stay away from 3D effects in launchers.
Laggy keyboard?
The Samsung keyboard seems to cache a lot of data, Try going into app manager and clearing Samsung keyboard cache. Worked for me. Then I also just switched to another keyboard - Swiftkey X because I wasn't using the handwriting too much in S keyboard mode. And I didn't like the AI predictions too much.
I still use S memo and S Planner and Kies Air and they all work great.
Currently no lag for me.
I came from a LG G2X running CM7 nightly #201, which was awesome by the way, and the GNote is comparable.
Current Devices:
Galaxy Note, LG G2X CM7 (Nightly #201 + GPS mod), HTC My touch 3G slide CM7 (back-up, back-up phone)
Past Devices. Most recent first:
HTC Touch Pro (great phone), HTC Apache, Audiovox Thera (lovable weirdness), HTC XV6600 (what a phone!), Kyocera 6035 (those were the days)
i was about to buy it too .. but i didn't cuz of these comments saying it's slower than the S2
any one have both devices can tell us the truth ?
A totally stock Samsung Galaxy S2 is always smooth, fluid and responsive, however the Note in stock form, which is supposed to be faster, has a clear but ever so slight input lag. On the Note I think Samsung's touchwiz UI performs better than any other third party launcher. However with the latest KL3 ROM overall performance is much improved regardless of launcher. So i swapped from touchwiz to adw soon after reflashing because I cant stand touchwiz.
It helps to reduce the cache and memory usage settings on any custom launchers that should help a bit. I'm sure its just a firmware issue and once they mature a bit this phone will be even more awesome than it is now. I honestly don't have any regrets and for anyone who is still on the fence, go for it. You will love it after a few simple customizations.
Stock Note is a bit slow for me, I use Romow Lite rom which is very fast. Even Market works (have issues with some other roms), and cifs and tun modules for OpenVPN. Only issue with the rom is AccountsandSync settings isn't install and failed to install (the feature works, you can log in, but there isn't a GUI to turn it off). So I use QuickSettings which can turn off syncing. I'm using Launcher Pro with it and its very smooth.
Thanks folks,
Should try some custom ROMS.... I wanted to wait a week or two to be sure that there are no hardware issues (it is troublesome to send it back on warranty with custom fw) and after that to root it.
Which custom rom do you prefer? I like miui very much but there isn't any port to Note till now ...
I also think the Galaxy Note is quite laggy. I tried the GS2 in the store and it is definitely smoother than the Note. And I can also confirm that the 3rd party launchers are surprisingly choppy on the Note. I ran some of those same launchers on my Android HD2 and got very, very good performance. Especially LauncherPro. It's perfectly smooth on the the old HD2 Android. I would probably have stuck with GoLauncher on the Note but it is terribly and perfectly choppy. My version is KKA.
My Note runs fine so far. I found it quite fast and snappy. Have not downloaded many applications as of yet but will add more soon. The ones I do have downloaded work ok so far.
One thing that is obvious is how much faster applications work on the iPhone compared to Android. As an example try downloading the Bloomberg applications and compare section and stories downloads time. The iPhone is about 3-4 times faster than the average Android device out including my new Samsung Note.
Just wanted to say that while Cassies KL3 mod is a good improvement, it's much better paired up with AbyssNote 2.3 kernel and the CPU clocked to 1.6Ghz. Now it really flies. Battery life also seems improved with this kernel but its still early days.
For those who think third party launcher is laggy, try Spare Parts +. Turn the animations to fast.

Galaxy S I9000 smoother?

Hello,
I just used a friend's galaxy s with the go launcher ex (samsung 2.3.3 stock rom) and I noticed that the transitions are extremely smooth ( I would say 60fps always) instead the transitions on my 2x with cyanogemond lastest nightly is definitely not that smooth.
How's this possible? is this because of the bad drivers or tegra 2 is just worse?
Hello!
Did you use GO Launcher Ex on your O2x? If not your are comparing to different launchers.
GO Launcher Ex is a little faster than the ADW Launcher that comes with CM7.
BTW: If you in need for more speed you could try ironkrnL.
HI! Of course I'm talking about the same launcher

But not the Same build type of rom. I'm on Paul's gr5, I use launcher pro plus which is SUPER smooth. I also tried go launcher ex on gr5 and its really smooth. So I would guess its cm7 that's stopping it from being really smooth and snappy.

I sold my Galaxy S for the O2X, and I don't regret it. The samsung galaxy S is definately not faster than the O2X, I had it for a week and i got irritated with how slow it was. So must be Go Launcher Ex running smooth, but the phone isn't
If your friend's SGS had an AOSP firmware or was using stock Samsung firmware with a lag fix, then it's very possible to get butter smooth transitions on the homescreen (regardless of whatever launcher is used). I haven't seen how smooth the O2X is, but the SGS can get pretty close to the smoothness of iOS with the proper tweaks and firmware.
makes sense..
the better smoothness also happens with the samsung galaxy player 4.0 I just got. I hope when nvidia releases the source code things will be better because these devices with single core cpus are just snappier than the 2x :S
My gf has a sgs I have oc'd it and I am using my o2x we both use go launcher and even her running 1.25ghz and me running stock 1ghz there is no contest my phone running weapon g2x dominates her stock rom running speed, and smoothness. Maybe its cm running bad or your phone running poorly....
Making bad decision's one at a time.
Samsung added H/W acceleration into some things, including the web browser
I tried the SGS with cm7 -> go launcher animations silky smooth
O2x with stock GB -> go launcher not that smooth like cm7, when you pinch out with two finger to see all the windows of the launcher it skips frames, on the SGS it look 60fps even when you open the app drawer with zoom animation the SGS wins hands down with both ROMs, the O2X is not smooth.
I also noticed that the O2X creates some odd artifacts in animations (pixelation and aliasing in lines), I noticed this too when I tried ICS sandwich alpha build when you try to scroll unscrollable windows to the wrong direction of the launcher and you get that skew effect.
All this is not to diminish the o2x but to understand whose fault it is.
#1 bad drivers from NVIDIA/LG/whoever is involved?
#2 lack of source code? (but even the stock roms show the problem)
#3 some lack of GPU instructions of the tegra 2 like NEON maybe?
#4 go launcher doesn't use tegra 2 to its potential (due to reason #3?)
It would be great to test, say the galaxy R with tegra 2 to see how it performs
Maybe someone can port those settings to 2X , It's really smoth !
There is such videos on youtube and the reviewer says the Galaxy R is choppy in menus, but the browser looks smooth.
but i saw my friend using i9100 with go Ex is very laggy...
oh yes.. he is using stock rom
My friend have a SE Xperia Arc with CM7.2 RC1 (the FXP114 KANG) and I have CM7.2 RC1 Temasek's KANG on my Optimus 2x.
On Xperia Arc Go Launcher is silky smooth even with 3D transition like sphere or cylinder. I also verified the transition speed in Go Launcher settings and they are the same (Default at 60)
It's not like my LG Optimus 2x is laggy, it's now 150% better than stock froyo with stock launcher. But there is smoother...
Oh yeah, I tested supercharger V6 and it changed nothing (I don't say it's not a good script, it just not helped my phone).
Yeah, its a combination of things that make our o2x slow
Lack of NEON, Improper NVIDIA support, no HW acceleration
one solution is make a opengl rendered launcher, but it will eat some battery...
The o2x is not choppy, with stock lg launcher yes but not with anything else is very quick.
with adw launcher ex is best for me
Uber smooth with tw launcher for me.

[Q] Which launcher uses the least battery?

I've been trying different launchers on this Ace I got recently and it's kinda hard for me to really tell which one drains more battery. My experience with Go Launcher EX and Launcher Pro has been pretty good so far, and although I'm leaning more towards Go for the great weather widget, I still don't know which one to stick with battery-usage-wise.
What has been your experience with different launchers in this regard?
I love ADW Launcher EX the most ans it is the only that I purchased other than Titanium Backup Pro...
Respecting others never hurt, let's build a better XDA community.
360 launcher is also good very lightweight and fast doesn't consume much battery also
Holo Launcher, and it just came out from Beta! It's in the store
Zeam is really lightweight, can't imagine it would use much.
The touchwiz launcher isn't bad, its what I'm using on CM7

im using sony home..u can download it on themes and apps section.. very smooth and has low ram usage

Launcher Pro doesn't seem to drain the battery that much. I've been using Holo Launcher for the last few weeks which is nice & light, it's now available to download from Play Store!!

ADW EX hands down.
Stock launcher
For me, the better launcher would be the stock one. I have tried ADW, EX, Go, etc. Now i'm using LEWA's, its smooth and freaking awesome yet Im battling with my battery which only lasts for 1 1/2 days(MAX). wew!
Zeam is not lightweight. It uses more ram than launcherpro.
Don't associate app size with resource consumption!

i'm not it uses very little ram on my phone according to memory usage app.
---------- Post added at 10:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 AM ----------
I installed a lot of popular launchers and got there memory usage:
FTL Launcher = 29MB
Go Launcher EX = 33MB
Zeam Launcher = 23MB
ADW.Launcher = 24MB
Launcher Pro = 34MB
TwLauncher = 24MB
Holo Launcher = 23MB

Zeam and Holo are joint winners for memory usage.
Note: this is for memory usage not battery life, it also depends how much of the CPU launcher is using.
If there is any more launchers you want me to add just say
You must try different launchers and compare ram usage of them. Which launcher is using little ram, that is lightweight and keeps your battery well...
