I've tried just about every reasonably rated run/bike app on my Aria (Endomondo and RunKeeper seem to be the best) and always have the same problem.
I start them before a run/ride, but shortly after I begin, my screen turns off and the app seems to close. It actually is still running (when I press and hold the Home button, the app appears), but when I reopen it, my current run/ride has terminated.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to keep the app going when my screen turns off?
Thanks in advance.
i use runkeeper and dont ever have that problem, the screen normally stays on the entire time unless i manually lock it or change screens
i dont even know how to change the settings to make it do anything different
I also use runkeeper without any problems (running Liberated Beta 5). I start the application/activity, lock the screen, and it runs without fail either in the background or as the primary running application.
Are you using some kind of automated task killer or battery saving application? That is the only thing I can think of that would explain the closing of the app when your screen shuts off.

I never saw your trackboost suggestion. I did a search on the Market and it couldn't find it. Can you send me a link to it?

I don't use a lockscreen. I just turn off the screen with the power button.
Not aware of using any task killer or battery saving app. In my task manager, it is still running.

Do Market notifications work for anyone? Or is it a known Android issue? Never worked for me and I'm on wifi/cell towers about 50/50.
Does it work in 2.3? I've never seen it work on 2.1 or 2.2. I've only seen it pop up in the notification area when manually checking/downloading an update. (thanks Google! -eye roll-)
Rarely it will pop up for me when I open the market and don't go to my apps. But almost every time its popped up for me was because I went to my apps.
I was really hoping Androids implementation of this would be better than iOS. Especially when froyo let you update all or enable auto update. In reality I think iOS is better (in this one tiny area), because if you open the app store you instantly see updates are available. But in android if you don't go to my apps sometimes it will take several minutes of browsing the market before you are notified.

I rarely get any Market notifications unless I'm at My Apps in the Market app and let it sit there for a while. It'd be pretty nice if I got notified to update my apps before I go into the Market though, I agree.

Thats the thing....they way the market was sold....so to speak....is that you would get a notification, whenever any app you have installed has an update. Seems most everyone gets that notification after they manually check. Thats what happens with me.
Could it be because you're shutting down the market app? I know that's what happens with all my other apps that have notifications. You only receive them if you don't "close" the app, but instead leave it running in the background.

That can't be it because Android judges on it's own what should be shut down based on the memory it needs I think. In other words, I never closed it.
These guys found a way to kick start it a while back, but I can't find the files to do the same for us.

I think Demonic240's referring to the difference between exiting any app (i.e. Market) using the back button until reaching Home versus 1 clicking away to home or another app. The difference is measurable in Task Manager. Method two: Market still runs. Method one: Market closed.

Gotcha. Regardless, I don't see any point in having update Notifications if it requires you to keep the Market app running constantly. I assumed Google had it connected to one of the basic Android services that always run in the background.
In the link in my last post, they talk about a value in a settings.db that triggers a CheckinService. Stuff that I can't find on our phones.
It's an interesting question. I got notifications regularly in 2.1 and can't recall when I got one in 2.2. I kept background data enabled under both.
Checking Manage Applications, Market Updater 1.0 only shows up when viewing All, and appears to be a dead service even when Market is running. I never checked it under 2.1 because it appeared to work.
Mine has never worked...only when I open the market does it decide to tell me I have a update!
Do you mean popup in notification bar or is there actually a popup that comes up. I only see notification never saw a popup.

I have gone through my AT&T Note 3 thoroughly and disabled most bloat.
I am finding the "My Magazine" app quite annoying due to single clicks of home button while on home screen and accidental upward swipes.
I have yet to figure out how to uninstall or disable it yet.

Open My Magazine, hit your menu key, settings, you can turn off the option to open it via the home button... Unfortunately not with swipe up though. It seems like swiping is more difficult to open it anyway so it's less annoying.

I don't understand why they have this and flipboard. It is basically the same thing with a different interface and less customization.
It's annoying as hell for me because I already have flipboard as a damn widget. What's worse is you can't even put your flipboard account on there.

Semi Solution
In a search on another thread to find a solution for getting to the home screen or home page without pressing the home button, user Dankchild provided this app:
Swipe Home Button Free
It creates a small area at the bottom of the screen where you can swipe up and it will take you home (or another custom action you set). You have to swipe from a little off the bottom of the screen up, and the magazine action is still there if you start on the screen, but since installing this and getting used to swiping from the bottom starting off the screen, I haven't opened the magazine application once. Not a fix but it is working great for me and killing two birds with one stone!
I'm looking for the same thing-a way to disable the stupid My Magazine swipe-up gesture. It's half baked and useless to me. Flipboard is much better and more customizable and I hate that the gesture is there at all in the stock launcher. There has to be a way around this somehow.
I went in to My Magazine and turned off the launch when pressing home button. Then with my phone rooted I froze it with titanium backup. Now if you swipe up from the bottom you get a little popup that says "No app found" or something like that. I have not found a way to get rid of that completely, maybe with that swipe up program listed above.
I also went into My Mag and disabled the button. Switched to NOVA launcher and now it doesnt activate if you swype up from the bottom of the screen...not sure if I did anything to disable it.

I read that this method is doing a fc whit the email apps
I am pretty disappointed with this. I was hoping I would not have to root the device.
You MUST agree to the Terms and Conditions / Privacy Policies to be able to "disable" the home button binding. If you force stop, clear data then the binding returns.
What was Samsung thinking when they thought they should FORCE everyone to use it or SUFFER the inconvenience...

Did not work for me. Even with installing the app and trying different bindings, it will either FC TouchWiz or go to the app not found screen in Google Play.

This is a the 'doze' function in Huawei EMUI. A lot of firmwares have this issue. It's because Huawei has blacklisted many apps to not to send notification when screen is off. The apps that are white-listed include WhatsApp and some Chinese Tencent crap.
There is a method to enable notifications for all apps but obviously that requires root.
And yeah, Welcome to EMUI, a UI that plays with your emotions.

All I can say is I have turned on every apps to run when the screen is off. I do t get any notifications, only if I go on the app or if I turned the phone off then back on I get a batch of notifications. I receive certain apps notification but its not consistent. Can't wait for a good root, to get rid of this crappy EMUI and hopefully the camera app will be ported, I'm happy with the pbone, the camera, but this UI is from hell.
Weird, I have 0 issues with notifications, everything turns up very quickly. Gmail, whatsapp, youtube comments... Etc.
I also use Nils lockscreen notifications though, I have the huawei lockscreen notification system disabled. It works very well like this until I find the time to root.

I only disabled the huawei lockscreen notification system (to disable the lockscreen all together you need root). Just use any lockscreen other than the stock magazine one in the theme selecter.
The UI certainly is different. But imho customizable enough that it doesn't get in the way. This is android after all.

OK if you guys have root i have something to try for you. I had issues with the process of GMD gesture control. It was killed by the battery saving tools implemented in this phone.
So I tried freezing certain system apps through titanium to find the one responsible for closing the background process and I think I found it:
It's a process/app called "power genie". I disabled it and now the process sticks. Also I made gesture control a system app, so maybe it's a combination of the two things.
It's not the same issue as you had but maybe it works for you too.

You'd have to try that out for yourself because I never had any issues with notifications coming through and I use third party software (Nils) for lockscreen notification.
What I described is a method that prevents a Huawei "power save" service called power genie killing background processes. No guarantees though, I had issues with gmd gesture control not working after a few minutes and I had to constantly open the app to make it work again. Then I froze power genie and since then it worked 100%.
So it's just my theory that it might stop other apps/processes from being closed as well.
I still dont get notifications coming through via the official gmail app, i might trying that power genie freeze, since any app thats not Huawei wont come through as a notification and thats when I give the app full access.'
I'm not sure if this is worth a try, but there's an option to 'ignore optimisations' on a per-app basis.
In settings > Apps > Advanced > Ignore optimisations > All apps
I've instructed to ignore optimisations for Dash, an app with a background service that launches the app upon connection to my car's Bluetooth OBD. I'll feed back if this has any impact, as I've noticed it doesn't auto-start the app on the Huawei P9 as it used to on my Nexus 5, despite 'protecting' the app in the battery manager.

Try adding them to the memory whitelist.
Phone manager>system optimization (paintbrush)>settings (gear top right)>memory cleanup whitelist
My understanding is apps in this list will not clear the memory when you "kill" the app. I could be wrong. Please respond to this post if this fixes your problem or not.
Two important settings, under Battery (protected) and under "Apps" (ignore optimization). Also try to put CPU to performance

I have a note 8, but emui 4.1 is pretty standard across the line. Having the exact same issue. Have tried the PNF, whitelisted google play and whatsapp in the memory whitelist, protected apps, ignore battery optimizations etc.
I can repeat the error. So it seems that it ignores the whitelist like you suspected.
Steps. Clear all apps.
Open quicksync manually sync accounts that i want to show up.
Notifications appear.
Go to app task manager view with the square button, kill app.
Send message. No dice.
Have even tried using the PNF heartbeat fix, but to no effect.
Now i have one odd issue. When i received the device, google play services was already installed, but some how it was in the system folder despite the phone being locked. Not sure if that is an issue, since if anything i would suspect that would be helpful instead of harmful, but i have no way of removing it to test since bootloader is locked , and the play services is persistent over a factory reset.
Anyways, any other solutions i have not thought of would be helpful, huawei makes such nice devices, but if you get stuck on a chinese rom, it can be a nightmare for some.. went through the same headache with mate 7 but managed to solve its notifications issues.

Yes I have tried that. For now I think i will just add my chat clients and aquamail to the locked status on the task manager and keep them open... I have tried all iterations of power saving, etc.. so I think it may just be the build unfortuneately. Hopefully EMUI 5.0 will be a bit less invasive, as they said they are going back to a more stock android vibe to compete in international markets.
Hello, I am in the exact same situation. Did you get some luck?
I updated mine to emui5, but nothing changed.
Do you have a AL10 chinese version? I am thinking that this might be the point.
Thank you.
