Hello everyone,
Ever since I got this phone I have been having this nagging issue of browsers, irrespective of which one it is, consuming astronomically high amount of battery power, using the mobile data , on Oxygen Os. On CM13 by sultanxda however, the battery consumption(also, on mobile data) is normal and nowhere close to what I get with stock oxygen Os be it on marshmallow 3.5.4 or nougat 4.1.1. Attached below are two screenshots depicting the difference on battery usage, on CM13 and oxygen Os 3.5.4 respectively. The browsing scenario in both cases is the same, reading manga on mangafox.me for the given amount of time. Any help in resolving this issue is highly appreciated as any number of clean flashes, or using the 'Mobile radio active' fix xposed module have failed to produce results.

I have done that previously but to no effect. It is not just tugabrowser that does this, every browser that I have tried did this(UC Browser, Chrome).

hmmm thats weird...
then try this browser....it is the same like Tuga
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsbrowser.browser&hl=com
but if you have that drain on every browser.....something other is going on your device
maybe you do a completely clean flash and start from scratch

I did a complete wipe(format data) and with tugabrowser installed as the only user app, still got that drain. This is only on mobile data, while browsing on wifi the drain is not that extreme. I did try reinstalling the rom from scratch and any no of clean flashes didn't fix this for me
In my experience, if you don't disable the background data in the app data usage settings page, any chrome based browser will drain your battery. I turned my background data off on chrome beta and now I get 6+ hours of browser time a day. With tuga browser, however, I got significantly less battery life no matter what I did. I just stay with chrome. Or, if you want a super smooth browser and aren't worried about having your google account linked to it, I would suggest using Samsung's recently released browser. It is excellent, and supports extensions like adblock.

I tried out your advice with chrome dev, and, the battery still drains at the same rate(~10 mAh per minute of mobile data active) with background data disabled. Maybe one of my apps is the culprit here...
Following. Same issue with CS Browser, which is otherwise fine actually (updated often).
Mobile radio active even if I'm not using my phone. Wonder if it's OOS-related? I'm on an OP3 with OOS 4.1.3.
Something is wrong because cm13 and chrome do not drain battery like that.
Uhmm thats weired. Maybe send it back?
Edit: mobile radio active is on your 1h ..xx maybe this is the problem? On my usage its 3min (on german Mobilfunkschnittstelle = mobile radio active)

So I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4, I got it back in October so yes I have "broken in" the battery. I have checked out several other posts and tried pretty much everything. I've turned off bluetooth, NFC, any and pretty much all useless Samsung features (smart stay, turn over to mute, multi-window), I've got a black wallpaper on for both my home and lock screens, I have greenify AND DU Battery Saver, I ONLY ever use data as I have unlimited data and my building has a shared wifi network which I don't trust, I have tweaked Sync in the settings menu to only sync crucial info from all my accounts (google, facebook, email, whatsapp, etc.). So far the BIGGEST battery drainer is Android System. It is always number one. I've had days where I've decided to push the screen-on time to its limits and have used it nonstop. Screen consumption only ever gets close even if I use my phone nonstop Android System is the biggest offender. I've tried keeping power saving mode on 24/7 but that has not seemed to help at all. I've disabled S Health, S Voice, and several other apps I never use like Google Play Newsstand. I am at the end of my rope I despise this phone for its claim to great battery life but its absolute GARBAGE real world performance. I consider myself lucky to get over 3.5 hours SOT. At this rate I might as well have an iPhone 5. I have no idea what to do.
Here's a list summarizing the things I've done to improve battery life:
Bluetooth off
NFC off
Multi-Window off
All email sync set to Manual
Sync for every account adjusted to isync only crucial info
Pitch Black Wallpaper
Power Saving Mode (Not Ultra Power Saving) switched on about 90% of the time
Using Greenify on all Power-Hungry apps
Closing most apps upon finishing using them
Using DU Battery Saver in order to monitor battery activity
Never use Wifi
No Multi-Window
No Touch Sensitivity
No Side Key Panel
Wifi Calling feature disabled (I never use wifi anyway)
No Download Booster
No Smart Stay
Animations switched off via the Developer Options
Tried using another battery (similar if not identical results)
I'm still getting at the very best if I'm somehow on a miraculous streak of good luck that day: 4 hours of Screen-On Time. It is ALWAYS Android System usually followed by Android OS and then an app or two before Screen (because my SOT is so pathetically terrible)
I love this phone, the display is beautiful, the camera is fantastic, it runs seamlessly (on Nova Launcher that is), BUT I despise the battery life. It has made me resent this phone and I'm seriously considering switching to the iPhone 6 Plus as that has comparable battery life and with it running iOS I doubt the OS would destroy my battery the way Android has been lately. What do you guys do to get such good battery life from this phone? I've tried everything I know!! Please can you help guys?
I'm also attaching screenshots from one of the BETTER days.
I would consider rooting and installing a custom rom, poprock I would recommend for keeping touchwiz.
I don't know.. maybe your battery is the problem.. When I was on stock I had the same issue, but i varied in a weird way. With poprock, battery life has been amazing.

A few people have this issue. I really think it has to do with a corrupt file that was flashed. Maybe no fix but a new phone. If part of the pit file got damaged no fix but samsung.

I'd already seen your thread. It wasn't too helpful for me unfortunately because I'm not rooted. Half the terms you guys were using "Odin'd, pit file, etc." I don't understand at all. I'm running Nova Launcher on this phone. Just typing this comment my battery has dipped from 78% to 74% this is ****ing ridiculous I'm sick of this **** phone I might just switch to iPhone. I'm done with battery raping Android.
I'm in the process of fixing this. I think I may have figured something out. I have been slowly working through freezing applications to figure out what is causing the battery drain. I've made some progress. I really think it is an issue with lollipop system apps.
I am now having a slight dragon from cell standby, but the Android System drain is getting capped. Been in this single charge for 17 hrs and Android system is only 7%
Once I get a bit more firm information I will post my findings.

Some suggestions: check out your Google settings first. Disable Google Now and uncheck their location monitoring settings. Also freeze Facebook (use the website instead). Finally ou can disable sync altogether for a while in case other apps are hammering away through it. Test your battery under each of those conditions. Good luck, be patient, take your time. If your battery is good eventually you'll get to the bottom of it. Use Better Battery Stats to monitor. Most people get fantastic battery life. I rarely use 40% in a day. Over night (8 hours) I lose 2% - that's also a really good thing to watch. If you are draining badly at night, you have major wake locks occurring.

Thanks I'll try some of that but my problem is that I shouldn't have to do all of this crap! God it seems like we HAVE to revert these superphones back to pre 2000 dumb phones in order to get any kind of a decent battery performance from them. Samsung just haaaaaad to make the screen 2K. If they'd kept 1080p it might've been better! I might as well just switch to the iPhone 6 plus if I want ZERO functionality from my big screen phone. God I hate this Note 4 and I'm so jealous of people who don't do anything like this and still get 5-7 hours of SOT with their Note 4's. I'm beginning to think they're full of it honestly.

Nope. Either replace the phone or wipe and start over since u not rooted very little help.

I am have the same issue with battery drain from Android System. I have see that issues is there when WiFi is enable the battery drains faster. When WiFi is off and using mobile data it drains normal.

If you click on the Android Systems within the Battery usuage section. It will give you more detail, and show you what services, or packages are using it. The. You can take it from there.

I see u play a lot of games I am assuming. How much? Games eat a lot of battery.
I love the phone, but actual use doesn't drain the battery quickly, but standby does. I use avast battery saver, and it doesn't help. Over 20 minutes I lost 2 percent, or 1 percent every 45 minutes. It's annoying how quickly it drains. I have the unlocked edition with 6.0 for two days now, and battery life hasn't improved. Ive wiped the cache and have done a reset, but to no avail. Should I root and go to a different ROM, or try something else? thanks.
What kind of apps do you have installed? Have you gone into the battery details to see what's using the battery? I have had CM 13 and like it, but can't really tell much difference between it and stock besides having much better control and customization, things that I find it hard to live without (granted, I only had stock 6 for a few hours).

AH this is my other account, but i have instagram and snapchat being the only auto refresh apps, and snapchat only loads when i open it so it doesnt sync when its on standby, and ive reinstalled instagram. Without it, nothing changes. So im at a loss as to changing roms or sticking with stock
Have you looked at the 'Battery' section in settings to see what it says about per-app usage? It lists the apps by how much each one has used, and gives useful information about how long each one has been active, how many times it has woken the phone, etc..... Not sure about stock, but in CM13 it even estimates how many mAh each one has used. I would try to figure out what exactly is using the battery before switching to a custom rom (unless you're wanting to switch anyway), because there's a chance that if it's a specific app that's causing the drain it will still do it on a custom rom. I would also get rid of any battery or system managers, savers, optimizers etc... I'm not saying that none of them ever work, but obviously they're not working for you, and could be part of the problem.
I don't lose any more than 5 percent overnight on CM13. There are only 3 issues [that I am aware of] that you may have going from stock to Cyanogenmod: Moto voice doesn't work (OK Google does), Android Pay probably won't work, and if you use Google Cardboard you'll have to change the dpi settings in display options, which is no big deal. The one thing that I miss from stock is Moto voice and being able to wake the phone with my customized hot phrase. Other than that everything 'just works' and is smooth, stable and super fast. And gets an update almost every day.
I'm coming from a OnePlus One. Unfortunately, I can't find reliable BLP571 replacement batteries in the U.S., so I purchased a new OP3t.
On the OPO, I have been running custom MM and N-based ROMs. When the OPO (currently running Nougat 7.1.1 on TugaPower 2.1) is sitting around doing nothing, I typically see my idle battery current drain at around 9 uA to 14 uA and Wakelocks around 10%. Of course, when I turn the screen on, these jump up.
On the OP3t, I have tried running both OOS 3.5.4 and the new TugaPower 4.0 (which is based on Nougat 7.1.1). When the OP3t is supposedly doing nothing, I saw an idle current of around 85 mA on OOS 3.5.4, and around 35 mA on TugaPower. I didn't check the Wakelocks on OOS 3.5.4, but the Wakelocks on TugaPower are around 93% awake time (!!!!).
When I wake up in the morning, the OP3t is down to around 75% battery. For reference, my OPO used to be around 98% overnight when the battery was new. Even now, my ancient OPO with a nearly useless battery is around 85% for the same overnight time period.
What can I do?
3.5.4 actually has drain issues, try 3.5.3
Even after the annoying wake-locks and the random battery drain that just happens because why not... I still manage to get 5-6 hours of SOT, I have managed to push it till around 9 hours if I keep the Bluetooth and data off; with Greenify and using the aggressive doze it has helped but I don't get any notifications until I turn my screen back on.. Which is fine with me, as I get texts and calls. It's much better than the nexus 6 and the galaxy s4 which would struggle to even get 4 hours of on screen time. There are plenty of people raising issues about battery life on the OnePlus3T even though its probably much than your last device. XDA also has plenty of threads already created talking about the same subject.
Edit - I'm on the latest nougat update 4.0.1
the 3T or OOS doesnt have any drain or bad battery issues.
the problem is user/user-app based.
sort out the app which is causing the problem.
I just made a post to a similar thread. It seems the battery issue is hit or miss. At any rate, please check my post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70581453&postcount=9

You stole my thunder.
Just kidding, but you're absolutely correct. I'm waiting to get my OP3T and then I will write a tutorial for users to help them out with the battery. Those 2 apps will be in my tut along with a few others that are helpful!
Weird, usually my phone, while idle of course, drains by 1% every 2 and a half to 3 hours. During use while im not playing games or anything im using pixel filter. Most time ive gotten is 9 hours 32 mins screen time. Im on 4.0.1 not rooted. Just uninstall apps u dont really need like amazon, youtube, facebook, tumblr and so on and use Firefox web browser. Firefox has background play for YouTube or any other audio source so you can stream music on Spotify soundcloud or whatever you want. I basically rely on Firefox for all internet things as if my phone were a PC. Saves time and battery because with 6gb ram my browser never slows down or reloads. Firefox is also really nice in the background consuming only 10mah every hour when not active or streaming audio. Cutting down ur app count will allow your device to doze longer, fetch less data and it certainly drains far less. Also if you're into this sort of thing, boot times are much quicker too.
Edit: sorry for the unedited massive paragraph here.
Another Edit: Make sure in case you want to use battery saver mode while streaming music to toggle Firefox to have unrestricted data usage in the data saver menu.
Check the link in my signature. My drain wasn't quite as bad but might help you figure it out. Good luck!
Thanks, guys! Greenify + ForceDoze seems to be helping a LOT! I'll need to let it run a few days to see the the real-world numbers.
I am having a problem adding apps to the ForceDoze Whitelist, though. Is that a known issue?

I've found that the whitelist appears blank until you add or remove an app, then the whole list will appear.
For me at times something appears to kick in in the background causing the CPU to spike and the phone to heat up. I can't figure out what it is though. When this isn't happening the battery drain is virtually zero and the phone flatlines overnight ,when it kicks in,the battery loses about 10% an hour on idle. I think there might be faulty drivers or something in the ROM causing this?! It's not apps as it happens to me on a completely debloated ROM with no apps. This is on Lineage and OOS. I've never seen this before on the phones I've had.

OOS 4.01 - I am experiencing exactly what you describe at 12%/hr and I have done literally all of the suggestions here. I have greenify, force doze, turned off location, disabled swift, did a factory reset and installed only 1 or 2 apps- and still I can watch battery drain with:
4 hours off charger and down to 44% with:
Kernel (android OS) 42.5%
Android System 33.7%
Google Play services 2.4%
Blah...Blah... (much smaller %'s)
What the heck could be causing this kind of drain? It seems to flatline when not in use for a while...
thoughts? Love the phone., but it is not usable like this....
4.0.1....No battery saving apps..

Hello,
I usually use Greenify Paid Version + Amplify Paid Version but only in 6.X roms in 7.X Xposed isn´t released yet....
Do you recommend use Greenify + ForceDoze (I never heard about this app) even without Xposed?
Thanks in advance.
I am still struggling with battery performance on my new OP3t.
I am running TugaPower N10 (LineageOS 7.1.1) + Better Battery Stats + Battery Monitor Widget + ForceDoze + Greenify.
While my wakelocks seem to be pretty short now, my lowest average current drain is 35 mA. For reference, my old OnePlus One had a lowest average current drain of 7 mA, or about 5x more on the OP3t.
My battery meter reflects the higher drain.
I have the same apps installed, maybe even some less.
Looking for more assistance ...
I'm on 4.0.3 OOS and using Franco kernel, 2% drain during all night, 5 hours of screen on time and still 56% battery, check what is wrong with your apps, or move from Lineage to OOS, is simply better.
EDIT: I'm not using any app like ForceDoze or Greenify
I'm not dissapointed.
Hello,
I'm facing low SOT time on my Oneplus 3T. I did not look at SOT earlier, but since I saw screenshots and discussions about SOT on OP3T where almost everybody posted screens with at least 4-5h SOT (record is 12h I think) I take a look at mine SOT and I found, that I have max 2-3h SOT with no games. Just usual using (Chrome, some FB, reddit, etc..). My friend has OP5 and he is using his phone similarly than me and he gets 6-7h SOT (yeah I know, newer phone, but I was earlier talking about OP3T users with same SOT).. For almost a month I was trying to figure out why.. I've been monitoring wakelocks (not very helpful for SOT lol), cpu states via BBS - without success, changing roms with different versions of android - without success. Last week I tried different kind of "test". I launched Display tester app and select "Pixel defect test" and let my phone awake with 100% brightness and black screen for about an hour. Only 2% of battery dropped, so I figured out, that the main issue is screen and not app. Do you have any idea what else should I try? I'm really desperate right now.. I don't think, that battery is an issue.. Maybe bad firmware, rom?.. Currently I'm on NOS with MadysXtended kernel with some battery settings.

No - if you run a truly black screen, then no pixel was actually being used at that time.
How old is your phone? Are you using any other battery-hogging apps beside Facebook?
Have you tried to do a clean flash?

Yeah I know how amoled display works. I tried this "test" to verify, that screen is the issue and not some app, that is eating my battery while my phone is awake (I don't have high battery usage when screen is off). I'm occasionaly using Waze which is not battery friendly, but in those screenshots I did not used Waze. I tried literally everything including clean flash.
I've always found that FB is a large user of battery. So I've replaced FB and Messenger with Frost which is far more battery friendly.

I notice on your screenshots, that there is no cell data connection. Do you have mobile data toggled off on purpose (such as to save battery) or is there poor data connection in your area?
I also see in the first screenshot, that there is no WiFi icon either. Which seems odd, but maybe just a fluke. I assume you have WiFi on, as you would have no data (since there is no mobile data, either).

Yeah I was prepared to go to bed when I was taking this screenshot (so Wifi and Mobile data turned off), but on usual working days I'm using mostly mobile data and on weekend wifi.

Keep in mind that cell network reception has an impact on battery life. How is the reception when using mobile data at work?

Yeah, but my friend with OP5 uses his phone same way as I do (I don't believe, that one year of technology progress has this huge improvement). Do you mean how many data I use at work? If yes, something between 100-300MB per day. It mainly depends on app updates from google play.. I have now 50% battery and 1h 38m SOT, which is bad..

No, I mean the actual signal strength. Poor cell reception can lead to significant battery drain.
Also, what screen brightness do you normally use?

I have most of the time 4 bars of 4 on LTE+. I normally using 1/4 to 2/4 of screen brightness.
If u r using mostly 4G, then be happy with 2-3 hours of SOT.
I have seen 6 hours of sot with both sims activated, but only with WI-FI, BT OFF and other root optimizations.
Unleashed by my rooted OP3T on 8.0
I used to have the same issue but now I've Omni ROM and it's got great battery life plus I've turned off about 30% of my pixels and most apps are greenified and some Lspeed tweaks are turned on and I'm also using the stock kernal. Give Omni ROM a try.
I'm on 4G and I still get about 5+ hours of sot on my usage.
Mostly chrome, Instagram, camera, Snapseed, Lightroom, etc

Thanks, will give it a try :good:
Hi All,
On my S21 Ultra each day Chrome is the app that has used the most battery by a long way, even when it hasn't been used much. I've tried putting it to sleep, deep sleep and I always close all tabs.
Is this the same for everyone that uses Chrome as the default browser? If not any suggestions to get it back under control?
Cheers!
Probably running in the background. Brave browser does that garbage too.
Try closing it after you're done using it.
The Samsung browser runs very well with available ad blocking plugins. Great for vids.

I do, but i have Samsung Internet Browser now instead, it works very well.
Had same issue on s20 ultra used adb to remove chrome and use duckduck go no issues now, sometimes it would alert me that chrome is sapping battery and to close it

You probably don't need to remove Chrome, simply close it when done.
It's probably polling the internet twice a minute unless closed out completely.
I'm running Chrome on Pie with no issues but I generally close out all apps when done with them. Straight Chrome is my least favorite browser though.
I've noticed higher Chrome usage than I had on my S20U. I wonder if it's due to using Google Discovery? I didn't use the Bixby version on the S20U, but I have enabled the Google version on the S21U to try out.

That's an interesting point, I'll turn off discovery and see what happens. I had been purposely closing chrome after each use.
It's running in the background polling the internet unless you completely close the app.
This screenshot was a minute or two after I navigated off that app but didn't close it. Even with no active input or being viewed it behaves like this. It's worse than Brave.
Samsung's simple pulses it's internet connection and doesn't poll unless it's actively being used.

I have been closing the app with the close all button. Weirdly my battery life hasn't been that bad, just concerning.

All browsers use a fair amount of watts. 8-11% per hour battery usage is typical on my 10+ regardless of the browser.
I had the drain on chrome so I removed it via adb then reinstall via play store.
Seems to be behaving now (although been just a day).
Could be wrongly reported by device care as I don't see much difference in battery drain, though there are many factors that affect this.
Could be worth checking with GSAM but I don't bother installing that anymore.
There seems to be a glitch with chrome and Android 11. Pixel users have been reporting the same thing, seen screenshots of like 1 min active and 15 mins in background using like 20%, same with edge. Worth using something else for now
Up until now I didn't have this issue bit upon reviewing my battery performance today, I see that Chrome had 20+% percentage of battery drain, which is crazy. Considering I'm getting grate battery life right now, I'll just monitored the situation to see if it gets worse b

Over used Chrome forever to tell you the truth. Before it, I was all about Firefox. Honestly for me, it's ease of use as it's synced with all my passwords. Yes I use a password manager separate from the browser, but eliminating steps to go about my day for personal and work stuff, I prefer it.
I have Samsung's browser and Edge also installed, but only really use those for specific reasons.

chrome is a hig power user on pc, so i think it's the same on smartphone, edge is way better for long
Sync is the main reason I still use chrome, have same browse history on pc phone and everywhere else.
I don't seem to have an issue with chrome, used both chrome and Samsung for 15 mins ish and they both used the same amount of battery.
Exynos and sync is on, didn't use smart switch

Having the same Problem on the S21 (Exynos)
I use it like 20 minutes and at the end of the day it drained ~30% even if i deny standby activity thats super annoying with the small battery in the S21. I just switched to samsung internet. Everything working fine.
Yes, all of the above reasons made my jump ship to Samsung Internet. No issues so far. Chrome has this really bad habit of syncing your bookmarks, google discover etc etc. So, even if you used the browser for only 10 mins, it will still run in the background for hours at stretch until you force stop it via setting...Well, that's google for you....
