T713, LinageOS 14.1: Adaptive brightness not working - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Edit: I didn't search hard enough earlier on, this issue is known and unlikely to be fixed, see the following post and the dev's reply in the following posts: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70838767&postcount=41
Adaptive brightness doesn't adjust the brightness but uses something in the middle (tested by blocking the light sensor / holding a flashlight over it). Changing the brightness slider (which is an offset from the calculated/measured brightness, yes?) has no effect either. Hardware is okay, it used to work with stock ROM. I'd be grateful for any infos or tips on how to debug this or what to try to fix this.

Froyo FRF85B Ambient light sensor only working one way

Hi, I am new to these forums and bought my nexus one one month ago. After the recent froyo OTA my ambient light sensor only brightens my screen. If the light dims and even when there is no ambient light it fails to lower the brightness and will stay bright forever.
I have tried using wipe cache and a complete factory reset from recovery mode. After this I even reflashed the official froyo OTA which is found on these forums. I am a new user and can't post links yet.
This is an AT&T, Rogers/Fido phone and it is stock. Can someone please confirm and see if this ambient light senor problem is an actual bug and exists on other phones. If not then what can I do to fix it as it was working properly before.
Yes, I have FRF83 (T-Mobile version) and that seems to be the case for me, as well: the display will only dim when I first hit the power switch to bring it out of standby. It will increase the brightness when the ambient light becomes brighter, but not vice versa. I hadn't really noticed it until now.
My suspicion is that this is intentional. The original software on the Nexus One generated a lot of complaints that the screen brightness changed unpredictably, that very minor movement of the unit would make the brightness change repeatedly. At least this way, the screen is guaranteed not to be inappropriately dim, but you will still get most of the power-saving benefit when you turn the unit on in a low-light environment.
I too believe this is intentional, I'm sure I read about it somewhere.
Alright, thank you for your responses. It would appear that they did this intentionally. As long as it's not a problem with my hardware only, I just got worried.

[Q] Backlight issue

We just picked up a used Droid for the dev department to play with. The backlight comes on during boot up but goes off as soon as it gets into the OS. Settings appear to be normal (full brightness). Any ideas?
hard reset didn't help. The backlight goes off at the exact moment the buzzer announces the os startup. (if that makes sense)
try using other roms..
Working on rooting and loading a rom right now. I took the phone home with me and discovered the backlight isn't out just very dim. It will change slightly when I move the brightness slider around.
OK, it's now running Steel Droid with the same issue. I have a bright screen in recovery and during boot and a very dim one once booted.
try to un-check the automatic brightness, and set it to full brightness...
if that doesnt work... might be a hardware related problem...
Did that already. Seems like an odd hardware issue. I have full backlight in recovery and during boot.
Here is a video of the issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxHqN_lycG8
Stupid question: do you have auto-brightness active? If so, maybe your light sensor could be broken.

Auto-brightness is unchecked and the brightness is set to max. There is a very slight change to the brightness when I adjust the slider back and forth.
BTW. It is currently running CM7 with the same issue.

MeMo Pad ME572c fluctuating brightness

Just picked up an ME572c and I'm very impressed for the price. However I have noticed the screen brightness levels keep fluctuating as if the light sensor is constantly detecting different light levels.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi,
i notice this too, but that can be related to the power saving mode. Plz turn it off and check the settings in detail. Maybe that helps.
Further inside the developer options there is another option to configure the auto brightness.
You can change the behaviour from dynamic to immediately or slow mode and active an onscreen lux, gain and brightness value display.
Btw i am not satisfied with the auto control, as for my taste the brightness is still too low in a less lighted room. Sensor is reporting 0 lux already with a brightness of 14 which would be ok for a really dark room & night but not at daytime.
What is your experience?
I tried playing with power saving mode and the auto brightness controls in developer options. While I could reduce the fluctuations, I could eliminate them completely. Unfortunately I found it too distracting and returned the device earlier today. It's a shame as everything else was quite impressive for the money.
I also found the fluctuations annoying, my solution was to turn the auto-brightness off. Honestly I dislike auto-brightness on any device, it was also one of the first things I turned off on my laptop.
I am using Lux app now and raised minimum brightness at 0 lux. Thats ok for me now.

Just bumping this to confirm this works and so that others can see. I used Developer options as well (before I found this post) and noticed the instant setting works best.
One more setting to also double check... Make sure that in developer options under auto brightness that you disable allow change gain...
Even with everything disabled it appears as if something still is changing the display. I particularly see it with something like a reddit browser when I'm viewing pictures. You click the pic, it loads and displays and then 1-2 seconds later the display adjusts based upon what is being displayed. Depending upon the picture it can be pretty annoying. I may have to root and start poking around to find out what is causing this.
with the lollipop update this issue is fixed for me.
Is lollipop really solve the problem?

Hello!
Im on lollipop, but the problem you had, still occur at me.
Did you noticed this problem, since you on lollipop?
I have the same problem. When i read, or browsing, the brightness changes in 2-3 steps.

LiveDisplay's RGB Color Calibration on the fly

Recently I've had my phone display repaired and the very first thing I noticed was that the brightness on the replacement display was not working. I tried wiping data/changing ROMs and confirmed that it really is hardware related.
My solution is to use LiveDisplay Color Calibration from LOS. What is does is basically reduce the screen "brightness" by reducing the RGB values. It does a relatively good job at preventing my eyes from drying out at night.
Now, the problem is that everytime I need to increase/decrease the brightness, I need to manually go deep into Settings to adjust it. Is there any Tasker profile to let me adjust those values on the fly? Or at least to profile a low-brightness value on one tap?
I found a thread on r/tasker that is close to my problem, but isn't really doing anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what you meant by that but my phone doesn't have a light sensor.

[PIE] Adaptive brightness issue?

Good evening,
just wondering if anyone else has issues with adaptive brightness after the latest PIE update? Since the update it changes the screen brightness during low light conditions from semi-low to low without any reason. And in normal light conditions it sometimes gets way too bright. And it doesn't modify the screen brightness in small steps but in one "big" step.
Btw: I did not wipe my phone before upgrading, maybe that's part of the issue.
yeah same issue here. phone seems to wake up in very low brightness mode randomly?
same here.

You will have to go back to the display brightness and adjust to the level you like, then subsequent light condition will then be adapted to your new value.
Hope this helps.
Same here. And I did full reset, after Pie upgrade
It needs some time to finish learning, Adjustable brightness Android 9 feature is now AI controlled. Google it.
