As there seems to not be a camera thread yet, here's one to get us started. I have had my P10 Plus in the UK from its release through carphone warehouse.
I had the p8, P9, p10 and this definitely is the model to get if you are interested in its camera capability.
I took this pic last night through my kitchen window (was very windy outside) propped up against the window pane using the light trails option. Not the best example but I am impressed by its potential for use in night photography.
Great camera phone both day and night.
And now compare it in .raw format with at least the P9, and when others with a Mate 9 join let's compare against those as well. The hardware isn't that much different from Mate 9, for a much higher price. So saying that this is the model to get would be a bit wrong IMHO.
I look to be getting one of these pretty soon if TWRP and ROOT is already available... So i'll reserve this spot and later edit with my pictures.

I disagree... I was talking about the camera specifically. I had the mate 9 and I do rather prefer the p10 plus for sure. There's a distinct difference in quality especially in low light.
So on that note my comment still stands...in your eyes wrong but not in mine.
A couple of day shots from beamish museum at the weekend.
Just a random shot to see if it can handle the sky

Here's a couple of shots in auto, both black and white then colour. Both focus and exposure smack in the middle of the light.
Again all untouched straight out of camera. Light was really bright and harsh today, plus handled it pretty well. Lots of detail to be had.

What a shame! Whenever and wherever, please always try to shoot in raw. Such a great feature of the cameras shouldn't go wasted!

Most people won't shoot in raw. However, I do agree raw is generally the way to go and the P10 series captures a lot of data with raw. This is a shot from my Mate 9 original taken in raw.

The P10 plus definitely has cleaner, brighter and more detailed low light shots compared to the mate 9 (not saying the mate 9 is bad at all by the way).
Here are just a few of mine, I adore the camera on this phone.

Hi,
So I recently pickedup Oneplus 5. I had Honor 8 Pro already. I was planning to sell the Honor 8 Pro and Make Oneplus 5 my daily driver. I was looking forward to "Dual Cameras. Clearer Photos"
But the moment I started snapping some pics, I was left dismayed by the sub-par, borderline poor image quality produced by on the paper very good cameras! The photos were full of noise and a lot dark! I expected good low light performance from a 1.7 aperture lens but in reality, the camera kept pushing the ISO and shutter speed to really high levels in very good and well lit conditions as well!
The night shots were so bad I didn't even bother keeping them. Why does such a GOOD on paper camera take such crappy photos? The fine detail is smudged up. The dynamic range is horrendous, HDR or no HDR. The lights get blown out and the darks are too dark to keep any details! Most pics come under exposed.
I am really disappointed. And from the research I did afterwards (I wish I had done it before...). It seems its an open-secret and Oneplus aren't really keen on fixing it...
Please check this Album. I have taken similar photos with Honor 8 Pro and then Oneplus 5.
I might add more later.
Let me know which one is better...

i don't know dude those pics look weird n funky , n even if the op5 cam is bad it ain't THAT bad as shown in the pics , i'm really confused

Always an excuse to feel better about your expense...
Well. I am not asking for PROFESSIONAL looking picture. See the other phone I posted has 4 less mega pixels. An aperture of 2.2 compared to 1.7. But still it takes sharper and less noisy images with greater detail and colour accuracy.
Lol just go back to the honor 8 pro then? I dont know how those photos came up that crappy but I get decent shots on the one plus 5. Try usin gcam.
Not sure what's to complain about. It's a cell phone camera of course it's gonna be pretty crappy. What about everything else about the phone? I get 8-9 hours sot every day no matter what I do on it. I think that more than makes up for a camera.
I Took this with my op5 and it's better than all of your pictures. Go get a professional camera and a flip phone.

I think that stupid argument has already been raised by one person. What are you comparing that shot against?
If you had a Honor 8 pro. You would have gotten a better version of it.
So please if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense. I can also take great shots using mods and what not then tweak them on PC and post.
Edit: And if you consider complaining about poor camera performance on a flagship with 'Dual cameras. Clearer photos' tagline; then you should get the Fanboy of the year award!

Well you say ".. if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense." , so.. what did you contribute besides saying that your honor is SO much better than an OP and just showing up Pictures where I dont think that an OP5 would shot SUCH bad shots and also These are just random shots where also half of These look very similar to me.
Also, you know, this is the OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion Forum, so yeah this is neither some News nor a Guide and also no Discussion as ist just plain complaining from your side.
So to contribute for the forum and all the People here im going to Report this thread and hope that other People do this too.
It's definitely not a secret that One Plus has a terrible camera app. My $150 Samsung Galaxy J3 could take better pictures, especially in low light. If the camera app on the OP5 wasn't such utter crap there wouldn't be a very long thread on XDA filled with people using the Google Pixel camera app on this phone. The OP5 is never going to be a good camera phone. One Plus only supports Camera 1 API which is very dated and limited. Google introduced the Camera 2 API on the Nexus 5X which I think was running Marshmallow.
If you want proof the camera will never be fixed just look at the 5T. One Plus did not tout that as a great camera phone like they did with the OP5. One Plus also ditched the telephoto lense in favor of a low light lense because they don't know how to fix the software issue with the OP5 camera. Like you said on paper the OP5 has great camera hardware. But One Plus doesn't have the talented software engineers that could actually take advantage of it.
I can't see myself buying another One Plus phone because I think they are a terrible company. Whatever phone One Plus releases is based on a model from Oppo. The difference? The One Plus version will have better on paper hardware specs and the Oppo version will have far better build quality. The Oppo version will also take much better pictures.
The build quality of the OP5 is lousy. My first one was unusable after about 3 months because of a defective motherboard and even though the phone was under warranty One Plus customer service and warranty repair is so horrible the only way I could get a working phone was to file an insurance claim and pay $150 deductible.
I was sent a brand new replacement phone and right out of the box the headphone jack was bad. I had to switch to Bluetooth because wired headphones don't work--the headphone plugs fall right out of the jack.
Then there's OOS. It's the programming equivalent of a custom ROM that you might flash on another phone. I do a clean flash every time there is a build update because dirty flashes consistently resulted in problems. A stock ROM should not be coded that poorly but it's an open secret that One Plus lost all of its best software engineers and the talent drain forced them to combine development of Oxygen and Hydrogen (the Chinese operating system) under one roof and all the programmers they have left are from the Hydrogen side. The problem with that is that One Plus is a very minor brand in Asia so they don't attract the best talent.
There aren't even plans to release an official version of Lineage Oreo for this phone. The OP5 was only sold for 4 months. If One Plus doesn't care about this phone why should major software devs?

Here ya go...straight off the phone.
Edit: Added another pic...?
The softness of Oneplus 5 main cam pics is a known issue (aka water colour effect); I have compared the pics from OP5 with LG G6 and Samsung Note 4. (My opinion = Note 4 was best). I was as disappointed as you are now, i suppose. However, since I had no choice but to use OP5, I found certain workarounds. Hopefully they'll help you too.
1) ALWAYS use manual mode for normal photos! (no need to tweak any settings, keep all on auto. Manual mode apparently doesn't use the same compression algo that main cam does => sharpness increased & noise reduction improved)
2) Check out the 100% jpeg mod in the forum. It's really works
3) Don't zoom in on every pic. I know it sounds silly but it's like a psychological itch you must scratch - don't. On the whole, the pics are pretty awesome if you just enjoy them as they are and not analyse too deep.
Cheers!
PS : Apologies for not being able to post comparison pics, I don't have those phones anymore. Just take my word for it

I had note 4 too and it took great pics.
Yes. I have found out that manual mode takes more cleaner pics compared to auto.
I am using the Gcam mod and it actually does some justice to the sensor on Oneplus 5!
I was thinking of using the 100% quality mod but I read it makes the file size really large.
I don't use the zoom feature though.
Thanks for understanding my perspective.

if the situation permits, then 40mp. the worse the conditions, the more compromises.
As far as I can tell 40mp is useful in Pro mode and i have posted the difference it makes on my insta. HDR and night mode revert to 10mp. You can have a look if you search my feed tag justaninstaguy there is a a few pics. I can't upload on the XDA app it keeps coming up with bad request.

Quite possibly, I think the hardware in the P20 Pro is right up there but they just don't have the development refinement of Samsung or perhaps Google as yet. It was the same on the Mate 10 Pro, on paper it was perfect but niggles made it frustrating. That's the attraction with Apple, it may not be good value or offer but 99% of users can experience 99% of the capability of the phone whereas with the P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro you really have to try hard to get the best out of it right now.

I agree
after hundreds of shots...I prefer 10mpx. Details, sharpness , lights, everything is better
40mpx sensor is useful only for particular situations and to take compensated photos (night mode, ecc but this automatically happens)
40mp by far in daylight. In low light 10mp.
Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk
This is a good explanation I found on another site "Now, you don't actually want to take 40MP pictures. Tap that image size in the settings menu and you won't get access to the other lenses. Instead, you want to leave it on the 10MP setting. This doesn't retire the 40MP lens. Here, it will oversample the picture and make it the best it can be when it's squeezed down to the lower, 10MP resolution. It also lends a hand when zooming beyond 3x. The 8MP camera takes great detailed images at that range, but bump it up to 5x and hybrid zoom will mix in the feed from the 40MP sensor to help improve overall clarity."
At least at daylight, taking 40MP and resized to 10MP, the result is much better than taking 10MP directly.
The main problem of 10MP is it's over-sharpen, 40MP resized to 10MP reduced the problem although still some.

If you need to change zoom then 10 is the way as you can't with 40..
If you're stationary and perhaps taking a wide angle image like a landscape or a city or sky or a large group of people, something you need detail for them 40 is the way.

That's an issue with Flickr. Not sure why, but from a phone they dont upload full res I think. Lightroom mobile is used by me for all photos. You should try it, the free version of Lightroom mobile is excellent, one of the best at straightening a shot even if its just 0.1 adjustment.

Was tried that couple of days ago. Was very excited when it opens, but seconds after that freeze. On mine old phone use gCam regularly and have better results. Idk whats the problem with Kirin? Why devs didn't make and for Kirin soc? Sources or something else?!

really bad on Honor Play was working good and only a bit of settings modify was needed! Night Sight was working too but with artefacts on shadows.
Yeah Huawei / Honor now is like Apple, totally closed system ( only way to unlock is to pay a lot of money )
kirin is a custom and closed source, not supporting camera api2 stock that is needed for FULL mode gcam to work, gcam was born for google pixel on qualcomm board. Ports on Exynos and Kirin are only partially working, can't fully benefit of gcam.
For modding better stick with Qualcomm CPU and an unlockable phone with easy ( like xiaomi, oneplus )
That way I am waiting for selling this phone and get xiaomi . never back to huawei

Moto G6 plus... My nephew have one and in some situations camera is better than Mate 20 Lite's one. Its a Qualcomm device so will be able to install gCam for alternative. Its decent phone general.
Other than that Mate 20 Lite is not bad at all. Camera is good especially in pro mode on low levels iso, around 125-250, takes crisp and detailed photos. Most of the time i use spot metering and auto wb. Shutter speed depending. Have good burst mode also. Its a aspherical lens and takes nice pleasant colors. Great resolution, 20mpx are great to crop images. Its not exactly "Point and shoot" type camera if you need such. You must play bit with settings to get maximum of the sensor but to me is good enough. Video is not something that is important to me. Its a 1080p 60/30fps recommend to stay with 30fps bcoz have EIS. Generally it take some time to me, to get accustomed with camera but now i enjoy it! Take time to search and try different devices, read and watch reviews and pick right for you needs to avoid disappointment...

Such a dedicated response, Thak you!
What do you think abou Xiaomi Mi 8 camera?
Hi everyone.
I have spent last 4 weeks to make short video using Note 9 exclusively. The idea was to check how far I can get using mobile phone camera only and get result which would be satisfying for YT or even further. Note 9 seemed to me the best for the purpose. To do so, I sent my Note 9 120 meters to the sky attached to the drone, drowned it in a pond and finally travelled around Yorkshire in UK to get some footage. As a result I just published today video on YT and my main interest is to find out if people can really say difference. I have used Davinci Resolve in post production. Colours are changed slightly to make it look “film like”.
I didn't want to make just moving pictures so there is a story. Don't judge me too harsh however.. I am not an actor.
During the process of filming I have learnt a lot about note 9 camera and I believe I could make much better quality video now. It made me sure that it is possible to make quite serious production
with modern mobile phone if one wish to.
I hope everyone enjoy it.

well... I did. The water wasn't my biggest concern though... My biggest concern was when Note was attached to the drone 120 meters above me... This phone is huge... and made a huge resistance in the air... and because delicate suspension I had to construct and use to eliminate vibrations I was in constant fear it will detach from the drone and .... well ... I don't want even consider what would happen...
I am not very big on YT, so do not expect plenty of views but really appreciate your comment. Thanks
I've done a few videos with the Note 9 so far and have found it to be exceptional.
See here: https://youtu.be/k-15LfCyyNg Including use of all slow motion modes as well. (Gets real dramatic around 4 minutes)
My BIGGEST complaint is the algorithm used for choosing either the telephoto lens or if there's not enough light it uses the wide lens with a sensor crop/digital zoom. In great daylight the telephoto looks just as crisp as the wide, but even the slightest bit of darkness, even pointing it directly at a sunset (seen here: https://youtu.be/jmApdV_P6Hk) and it flips over to the wide with a crop ruining the consistency. As most have noted, this same crap happens in "pro" mode as well.
I really wish in at least pro mode, Samsung would let the creator choose. I can mitigate sensor noise, I can't really mitigate lack of resolution.
Very well done on the film above! I'm impressed. Did you use Filmic Pro or the stock camera app and get the anamorphic crop in post?

Very nice videos of yours.
My idea was to make video with camera settings as they are. So I used original camera app at fully automatic. The only changes I have made were in post production
and I used Davinci Resolve 15 for both - adjusting colours and anamorphic crop.
I agree with you that "pro" mode should be fully pro I have not noticed the problem you described though. I need to check it.
My conclusion is that actually whatever we will say about mobile phone's cameras they are so good nowadays that with a bit of effort everyone can make videos like mine or yours ..
I did some comparative shots with one of my work colleagues. He has a Samsung Galaxy S9+. We took the same photos in the same conditions and all his photos were sharper, more detailed and with less noise. Even low light shots where I had night mode enabled, his still took better pictures and he doesn't even have night mode.
Pretty disappointing.
upload the samples, let us judge it too
I've come from the S9+ and the Mate 20 Pro is better

Hmm.... I don't have so but I have s8 to compare.. Mp20 takes way better pictures in any situations.. Please post the samples you are comparing.. Maybe it's just the Samsung screen is better than our Mp20.
I'm also coming from the S9+ and the shots on the Mate 20 Pro are consistently better, with more details.
What I noticed, though, is that OIS on the S9+ seems to be superior to the stabilization on the M20Pro - specifically in low light situations. But we are talking about subtle nuances here ....
I think camera is superb
My mate 20 pro camera is way better at night than my note 9 ugly camera
You got defective unit, the only camera that beats mate at times, is the Pixel.

ok, I have this problem too!
Bought a mate 20 pro yesterday and today I was comparing the pictures with the S9 and the Mate and all of them are way better with more detail in the S9.
I'm in panic now!
i will post the comparative pictures.
edit:
Left one is from a Galaxy S9 and the right one is the Mate.

The photo you took is totally different composition, the monitor LED light might effect the result also. Should take a photo with same composition.
another ones
edit:
don't know why the S9 image stays always upside down after uploading..

Do you think the m20p is a good upgrade from the s8/s8+ especially including the free pre order gifts?
anyone know if this phone has diferent camera sensores like samsung (Sony and samsung sensor)?
I can't believe that my S9 with only one camera take way BETTER shots than the Mate 20 pro.
Too much disappointed with this!
Don't know if I'm doing anything wrong...
I bought this because I was tired of the Samsung ui and the slow (NO) updates... but payed a lot more for this phone and comparing the pictures.. 90% of them are worst than the S9.
The pictures in the Huawei are way more darker...
first- S9
Second -Mate
Auto Setting in both phones.
Huawei with AI off

Well yeah.. The phone itself is nice. Good upgrade if your coming from s8..
Ok, while I really like this phone for it's camera capabilities, it's fair to say my experience with the M20Pro shooter has been a bit mixed. I am coming from a S7 edge (great camera for its time). My girlfriend has an iPhone XS, so that's also a good reference.
The good: the wide angle lens is amazing, great for pictures of architecture and nature, shots look dramatic and fairly unique. Night mode is also good, when it get's it right, it renders a really impressive picture. Portrait mode is a bit agressive, but does an above average job bluring the foreground as well as the backgroud. Aperture mode is neat and more natural looking than portrait. AI is ok, it get's things right more often than not. I haven't used much the 3x zoom yet, but I guess it can come in handy.
The bad: no optical image stabilization - it may seem like nitpicking, but this phone takes a lot of blured shaky picures for a flagship, especially in low light situations. You may find yourself having to have to hold it steady and firm for a good second or two in some situations to get a usable shot. If you're trying to take pictures from moving subjects, like pets or kids, this device is not your greatest friend. The dinamic range is also not the best, lagging significantly behind iPhone and Pixel - the shadows tend to be darker while the highlights do blow sometimes. I found that a little post production goes a long way with the M20P shots - when you recover those shadows, add a tad of sharpness and maybe a bit of saturation you can make a rather dull pic look amazing - but I can understand how the average user might not want to go throught that. Also not great is the HDR, firstly because it's a separate hidden mode in the extras (when it should be a toggle always readily available on the interface), secondly because, as mentioned, while usable, it's not top class - and again the lack of OIS makes things trickier.
All in all, I am mostly pleased with this camera because of its versatility. You can acomplish pictures with the M20P that no other phone can match - like a wide angle night shot. Having said that, it's certainly not the best point and shoot phone camera out there - to get the most of it you have to wrestle through the endless menus and modes and sometimes work a bit on the post production. So, if you don't care abou the wide angle lens and just want a phone camera that spits out eye catching images 9 times out of 10, I guess you could be better served with a Pixel 3, iPhone Xs or even a Galaxy S/Note 9.
Those are my two cents, but I'm curious to read what you guys think.
Cheers.
