Question about tethering to router - Off-topic

Hey guys I have a asus rt-ac1900 router that supports usb tether and a ac815s unite explore hotspot with unlimited data but for some odd reason the internet is extremely slow 500kbps usually or it won't even load a website but speed test shows I'm getting 20mbps down and 20 up. I'm really stumped on what is going on I have a hunch it may be dhcp related but I do not know how to fix it. If someone could please help me with some ideas it would be greatly appreciated!

the internet is slow in all devices?

Same issue was driving me nuts.
All devices connected to the router constantly lose connection or more like the response is incomplete.
It's the USB modem app on the asus router. It doesn't seem to work well with Unite Explore (maybe all Netgear hotspots).
I have the T-Mobile router and I thought it might be the buggy firmware, but even after switching it to the latest Merlin firmware, I still have the same issues.
I ordered the Netgear cradle, so that's my solution.

slow connection may be caused by many reasons. You should make sure this happens on all devices.

my wag300n reboots during web surfing with kaiser

Hi, is there anyone having this issue using wifi? My linksys wag300n reboots after few minutes of use with kaiser. Linksys customer support doesn't know how to solve the problem.
I tried changing the channel but with no result. It lasts max 5' then the router reboots and the kaiser doesn't connect anymore.
Hi
If your box reboots it is a problem with your router as it is of course a security hole that could allow a denial of service attack. Your router shouldn't reboot no matter what tries to connect to it.
The Kaiser is Wi-Fi approved and has worked with no issues wherever I have tried it, as far as I can see your router isn't, this means it probably lacks the testing and interoperability of other routers that have gone through the testing procedure to get the Wi-Fi logo.
I would check for updated firmware for your router, that may help. Often disabling security and encryption will see things play a lot better together however you don't really want to do that.
You may need to get a new router for it to work reliably
Regards
Phil
The firmware is the latest, and linksys assistance is futile, suggesting channel switching and ssid renaming...
Wireless works flawlessly with a notebook, but with kaiser lasts only few minutes, and of course is NOT kaiser's fault, infact i didn't even bother contacting HTC.
ATM i think that you're right: the only solution is getting another box.
Thanks for your reply
The linksys WAG devices are a royal pain in the a.......
Switch to a better router would be my choice..... It seems unless your paying a squilian bucks for a TRUE cisco device, then Cisco stuff sucks.... However all my Cisco stuff works a treat (for the most part).
If you do go searching out a new router, and like to flash roms on more than just your phone, check out these routers at this link
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
it's a free linux-based system that you can flash on various routers that adds tons of functionality to the device. i have the standard install of dd-wrt on a wrt54g v2 linksys router, and it works flawlessly.

Verizon FiOS and Wi-Fi

Hey all. I saw a thread where an issue was briefly mentioned before but saw not resolution. I just had FiOS installed at my house last week and ever since then I cannot get to the internet when connected to Wi-Fi.
Just so there is not any confusion, I am able to connect to wi-fi and get an IP address. I am also able to access the verizon router's web page from my phone but cannot get out to the internet. It works fine on 3G and Edge.
The problem is seen on both my G1 (running Super D 1.5) and my wife's phone (Running CM 4.2.4).
Anyone else seen this problem and know a solution?
Sounds like a router problem. Get a different one, or turn all the security off on the Verizon and restore to default settings.

I already turned off all the wi-fi security and tried, still a no go. Verizon FiOS uses a modem/router combo and you have to use it. Prior to last week I had a Comcast using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem and a D-Link Wireless router with no issue.
I have no doubts this is a router issue I just don't know what it could be as all 3 of my wireless computers are able to access the internet without any issues. The only devices that are having problems are the wife and my G1's.
I will try to do a factory reset today but am afraid this may affect the FiOS home media server and other Set Top Box I have.
I was just hoping someone had a solution to this as someone else mentioned the issue on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-444245.html
Best bet is to take it up with verizon, I'm sure there are other people that have the problem.
It's good to know they force you into using their hardware, I wouldn't want to go without a proper router, so it could be a deal breaker for some.

yeah, basically what I had done was turned off the wi-fi on the verizon router and hooked my D-link wireless N router up so the Verizon was basically just acting as a modem. I took my d-link out of the equation to troubleshoot and determined that it is definitely something with the Verizon router, I just don't know what. The interface on the Verizon router is crap too.
I'm going to reset the router today and see if that resolves the problem. Other than this issue I have been totally happy with their service. The FiOS Cable is nice and the broadband is way faster than what I was getting with Comcast.
This is solved. It turned out to be a port forwarding issue.

[Q] MobileAP/X-Box Live Compatibility?

Hey guys, I'm a long time lurker, first time thread-starter, and I hope there is a simple solution to this.
This is more of a proof-of-concept question, and since the PS3 is capable of connecting to a tethering application I figured an XB could as well.
Recently, I updated my Captivate's ROM to the SREv1.3.1c (it was the ROM before he renamed it to Cognition). One of the added benefits was the addition of the Mobile Access POint, which is way better than PDANet in my opinion, but I digress.
Anyway, I've managed to turn the AP on and get it to connect to a PS3 with no issues and very little lag, which was awesome. However, the XBox is being a pain in the ***. i can go to my network connections on the XB, and my wireless attachment "sees" the connection just fine. It also connects and pulls both a IP and DNS server address. I even get 5 bars of great signal.
But when I run a XBL test, when it tries to connect to the internet it craps the bed and does nothing. Now, I've seen people get XBL to connect over similar tethering apps, even PDANet with its shaky connection issues, but I can't seem to figure this one out. As far as I can tell, maybe 3G has too high of a latency to be compatable, but I figured I'd ask the experts of XDA. Can anyone help?
Did I forget to say please or something? Any pointers?
Hey just wondering what is your configuration. like are you connecting with wi-fi from the phone, do you have a laptop to use? that is one of the easiest ways. or are you just usb direct into the console?
Well presently I'm using MobileAP which broadcasts a wifi signal that my laptop can pick up (it's how I'm typing this at the moment as well). It can be seen, like I said, but the XB won't get past the internet part of the diagnostic test.
I also had PDAnet installed a while ago so I know how to usb tether but couldnt get that to work on XBL either.

Chromecast network issues

Does anyone elses Chromecast wreak havoc on their network? My other devices slow down, and my router seems to occasionally go in and out. What might solve this? It's not a speed issue, as this doesn't happen when streaming on the computer or wii.
standing by this thread. My tablet phone and laptop all have expirienced this slow down. speed test is still showing a 25ms ping and 30mbps down, but youtube and play store are timing out on both my phone and tablet, and when trying to cast from any device, the entire thing lags out. then i lose the cast button...
haven't found a solution yet

When I set up the Chromecast for the first time, my router totally locked up. I rebooted it and haven't had any problems since. I am running an ASUS RT-AC66U w/ Merlin-ASUSWRT firmware.
I have a similar problem. I use my Chromecast and then my router chokes up till I reboot it.
My dlink router was from 2007 and chromecast would lock it up completely. Bit the bullet and bought a new router and haven't had any issues since.

Been considering getting one anyways. Might as well do it.
Chromecast slowing my internet connection
Experiencing an issue kind of similar to the OP's. Basically while my Chromecast is plugged into the TV, even when not in use, it slows my internet connection. I normally get between 25mbps and 35 mbps down on a speed test and gaming as well as file downloads work great. As soon as I plug Chromecast in, my download speeds on a speed test drop to about 1.5mbps to 6mbps. All of a sudden online gaming is basically impossible due to ping spiking and downloading files becomes extremely slow. If I unplug the Chromecast my internet speeds return to normal. I don't know what Chromecast is doing, but something is taking it's toll on my network.
Rebooting the router (Linksys E1000 I believe) has down nothing to resolve the issue. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is there a way to make Chromecast hibernate or something when it's not in use? Any information about what could be causing the issue or things to try would be helpful. Thank you
Corrected the issue
I was able to fix the issue. Turns out my Cable Modem has a built in router that my computer was plugged into. I also have a linksys (wireless) router that is connected here. The chromecast is connected to the linksys router. I unplugged my computer from the cable modem (router) and plugged them into the same router as the Chromecast (Linksys). This appears to have fixed the issue. Someone that is better with this stuff could probably explain why, but I just wanted to follow up.
Totally!
I had this problem too. I have a Chromecast, AppleTV, GoogleTV and Ouya all right next to each other, with the Chromecast in an "always on" state. Ever since plugging in the Chromecast, network performance on the AppleTV and GoogleTV has been unusably slow. Even VNCing into my desktop PC, which is hard-wired into my cable modem, was slowed down.
I unplugged the power on the Chromecast last night, rebooted the AppleTV and GoogleTV and voila they work wonderfully. Network performance on other connected devices seems to be much better as well.
Would having several wifi devices in close physical proximity be the cause, or is it more likely Chromecast's need to be "discoverable"?
FWIW my wireless router is an Xfinity modem.
chomecast network issues
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution to this, The Chromecast works but it makes my network unuseable. FWIW I have an Asus RTn56u router that has no problems otherwise

Can you describe what happens in a little more detail?
Does your network get slow, does your Internet get slow, do your devices suddenly say there is no wireless network? Something else??
"Unusable" can mean a lot of things.

Sorry, thanks for responding..
My internet access on other devices becomes very slow to the point of being unusable if the Chromecast is plugged in.

It's slow - but it still works?
Hmm, Google says your RTN56U is compatible but to contact ASUS for assistance which I'm guessing means ASUS might have an beta or pre-release firmware that fixes the issue.

I'm having this same issue. I'm using an Asus rtn16 with tomato firmware by shibby. Quite frankly it's ridiculous that this is a problem for chromecast. My router is a newer model and it should be supported. My roku 3 is able to stream just fine off my WIFI. All I've been able to deduce thus far is that when casting, the wireless interface of my router seems to get ddosed in some way because when pinging the router wirelessly from other devices, the pings skyrocket up to 1000ms and it causes some packet loss. Ends up making the chromecast stream really badly and of course my other devices slow down. When pinging the router through a wired connection during this time, the pings are sub 1ms. So it seems that the chromecast wreaks havoc on the wireless interface for whatever reason. As I said before, no other devices in my home cause the same symptoms. I may try to see what I can gleam from sniffing the network with my alfa usb WIFI adapter which is able to capture everything going across the air in promiscuous mode. I'm not sure if a lower level wireless spectrum analyzer would be necessary but let's hope not. Or let's just hope Google gets this sorted! I realize that some have fixed this by switch routers, but I don't see that as an acceptable solution since no other devices have issues with my router.

Roku and Chromecast work in very different ways and therefore use the network in much different ways. Chromecast has a discovery protocol that Chromecast-enabled applications use to find Chromecasts on the network. This involves multicast packets, and while most routers handle and allow multicast just fine, some either are stupid/flawed or are shipped with "secured" default settings that block multicast traffic.
After discovery
What applications and content are you casting from?

Tried youtube, tab casting, and plex.
Youtube barely gets through a video. Tab casting works for a couple seconds, then chokes and loses the connection. Plex buffers every 5 seconds. I actually do notice ping rises to around 500ms when using plex on my galaxy note 8, when the client fetches chunks of video every 10 seconds or so from the server. i noticed that this happens over tcp, whereas tab casting sends a udp flood. but I'm not really sure what is 'normal' as far as the ping going up when the wifi is being used to capacity. I can imagine that saturating the network would do that. I know that plex will pull data in chunks as fast as it can. So that saturates the wifi for about a second or two for every chunk. But I guess for whatever reason, chromecast saturates it even more. Not sure if its because its udp or what, and I don't really know why that would make any difference.
So, streaming with anything else is ok, on both G & N modes, causing ping to go to around 500ms.
When streaming to CC, on both modes, ping can hit 3000ms at times and total packet loss.
I'll see if playing with any of the advanced wifi settings in the router can fix it.
Not sure this is relevant but I have seen a bunch of issues being reported by people using custom Router Firmware....
Not just here but on other sites as well...
Maybe it's just coincidence...

Your network bandwidth seems "bursty" - not a big deal for general data transfer, but definitely an issue for streaming where sustained throughput is important.
What's your signal strength on your Galaxy Note?
Can you increase the signal power on your router?
Also, check your router's orientation. Often times the internal antennae are designed to operate in specific orientations, so putting a router designed to stand upright on its side can drop the signal dramatically as the devices are no longer within the transmission cone/donut.

Issues with new TWC modem/router

Hi all, while thinking that faster internet would be a good thing, it seems that I have managed to break chromecast compatibility with my network. Previously I had a Netgear router that worked perfectly, but when we got an upgrade to TWC's new "Extreme Internet" they installed a new WiFi router/modem hybrid that I cannot seem to connect to. I get the message that it is connected to the network but not the internet. Ap isolation. Is disabled, but I cannot find the plug and play feature anywhere in the network settings. Has anyone found a work around?

If you can give us the exact make and model we might be able to help more.
BTW, TWC changed their policy a few years back and now allow approved customer-owned modems which will save you the modem rental. They used to not charge for the modem rental but also not let you use your own. Installed a Motorola SB6141 for my relative and it's been working great with the Netgear WNDR3700 I put there.
No Chromecast yet because I haven't been by to visit...
You could always use your own modem with twc, just that most people did not know that. Like previously mentioned, more details are needed in order to further assist you. Make and model(tg862g, ddw3611, dvw32011b???). More than likely you just need to call and talk with level 3 tech support. I personally used my own router behind the modem because I do a bit more than normal with my router.

I went through Hell on Christmas Eve with Time Warner....
They have a new Modem/Router they are using....When connected to a personal Router it does a double Nat translation which really doesn't work at all.
Your lucky if you even get Internet access on a Computer with it.
Check your router and see what IP address it has under internet connection. It should not be 192.168.0.x
If it is not an outside IP you need to call support and tell them you need your Router to breach the Modem and have them shut off all ROUTER capability on their Device so that all it does is pass a public IP to whatever is connected to it.
If you get your phone service from Time Warner as well better call on a Cell Phone because they will drop the phone call the second they mess with their Modem/Router and you will suffer through Groundhog day explaining it to the next guy from scratch!
Well guys I solved my own problem in a way. I disabled the wireless broadcast from the TWC Arris router and just connected my old NetGear ( old as in 2 months old) and it seems to work perfectly now. And the installer said, " You won't need to use your old one because this box is like commercial grade bro."
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
Glad to hear. The wireless modem you have is indeed a great modem and you could use that alone but it is easier to just use your own. The installer more than likely wasn't on the up and up about the more technical aspects of the modem. You can't knock him for that part as the techs are not trained on a lot of the extra features of the modem. I only know this because I may or may not work for the company(need to keep work out of forums).
