Hello All,
Looking for a solution to the title. Need to make my phone turn on WiFi HotSpot when it connects to the Bluetooth in my car. I tried this with Tasker and a guide I found online, but it fails and says error executing action: WiFi Tether.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
OP, I've tried to replicate the problem and it seems that the app doesn't have the proper permissions. Although all app permissions are enabled in the app settings, I think it's missing an additional permission. See screenshot below. You might want to contact support for the app to get the issue resolved.
As for a work around, it may be possible to do what you want with NFC stickers.

Yep, same thing I was getting. None of the automation apps for this particular scenario that exist on the Play Store work either. SecureSettings plugin for Tasker also will not enable WiFi Hotspot. Seems to be by design. I'm just going to go the NFC route since there is a particular spot I put my phone in the car every time. Thanks for the reply!

NFC will not turn on WiFi Tether it's an issue with the app not requesting the permission or Something with the Samsung Software. I had an LG G6 and it was working fine. The way I resolved my issue I use autoinput. Now it's working fine. see the attached:

Yes. That would be the trigger. I have that on mine because I have an android headunit that like to have connected to the internet since I run waze, pandora and some other apps that require internet.

Sounds like the same implementation I have. Thanks for the help! So I would set the profile in tasker, and then the task would be what I put in AutoInput, right?
Thanks again!

I did it backward this time. I created the task first and then I create the profile. I use the state connect to BT to trigger the profile. Also it's very important that you enable smart lock, so your car BT can disable the lock screen and autoinput can do the job. You would need to buy the full version of autoinput since the lite version won't work.

the Network to 2G when you get home. I am having trouble getting phone calls at home with WIFI on and LTE enabled. There is some kind of issue with some phones that seems to send phone calls directly to voicemail when you have bot WIFI and LTE enabled at the same time. I have never used Tasker, would that be possible to set up this way? Do you guys know of any app that will do that automatically. Thanks in advance for help or feedback.

It looks like learning tasker would be my best bet to do what I need. I have been reading up and watching some videos on tasker and it is an amazing tool. A lot to learn but for the simple tasks that I want it sholuld not be to hard to setup. Thanks for the reply
Tasker won't switch your lte on and off with the stock Rom, but it will control WiFi and Bluetooth, and you will be able to set up a location based profile to do it automatically.

Okay, I have been looking over Tasker, it does so much it quickly intimitades new users like me lol. Thanks that answers my question and I appreciate your post.
I had the same problem with Tasker. Even with some of the tutorials, they steps they used must have been for an older version as they didn't even match what I was seeing on the screen.
If you want to try a much simpler interface try out Locale. Its the same concept, but the interface is a LOT easier to understand for newcomers. I have mine set using location to turn on WiFi/off BT/set ringers to 10% volume/check into FourSquare when I get to work, turn on BT/off WiFi/Open Google Listen & GasBuddy when I get in the car and such. Most of the plug-ins you can use with Tasker can also be used with Locale too.
However, I suspect what you are wanting to do would require a plug-in as it is a sort of advanced procedure but maybe if you find some app that will allow turning off 4G, you could at least have it open the app or toggle to turn it on and off as you leave home - if you can't have it happen automatically.

My understanding is that Google, since Jelly Bean, has pulled the API's for turning off radios and GPS (just as they have with battery stats in 4.4) in the interest of more secure devices. So without root, and in some cases something other than the stock rom, programmatical access to these settings is no longer possible.

Okay, that may be part of my trouble no root yet. This is the first phone I have not rooted since coming to android. I probably should have gotten the Dev Moto but I was stubborn and wanted to pick my design:silly:
Tasker should be able to do some of what you need, but as others have mentioned you will at the very least need root to get it working.

On the stock Moto X (XT-1053) you can turn GPS on/off via Tasker without root or using Secure Settings. It was a delight to see this, and not get the GPS nag screens I've previously gotten on a SGS3 (Verizon). Would have to play around, but you might be able to execute an activity or shortcut in Tasker that brings up the settings screen where you can choose 2G data and then script a screen tap in just the right place. Essentially automating the actions you'd take doing it manually. Not as pretty as a direct setting, but Tasker can execute this kind of thing very fast so it's of little bother to see it flash by on your screen.

Which vendor version of the Moto X are you using? Would be in character for a vendor like Verizon to neuter a useful feature.

OK - Just made a task which turns on GPS waits several seconds and turns it off. Verified it was actually on/off when it said it was on. I'm running 4.2.2. My son "upgraded" to 4.4 on his Moto X, and Tasker GPS manipulation doesn't work on his. I didn't root, and verified as much with root checker, so it seems this is an "upgraded" feature in 4.4.
I'd consider rooting, but do like some of the Moto rom features so don't really want to move to an alternate rom & not wild about losing warranty. Maybe a little off topic, but if you root 4.2.2 and latter upgrade to some 4.4.x release, will you end up losing root?

Interesting... My recollection is this was disabled under JB on my Nexus 4. I didn't have 4.2.2 on my Moto X long enough to test.
Can you toggle airplane mode using tasker?
Off topic for here but a quick question. Would this be a good root quide to use. It seems pretty straightforward to understand and do. http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/11/root-motorola-moto-x-running-android-4-4-kitkat/ That site has been around and I think it is reputable but wanted to check.
Dunno, but I am not sure you're gonna be able to toggle LTE even if rooted. At least the description of Secure Settings suggests you can't without a custom rom.
If you turn off mobile data, does that solve your incoming call issue?
Hi,
Is there an app that will auto start tethering when it detects a bluetooth connection? I have used Trigger with my previous SM-G925I and it was working great but it is not capable of toggling the hotspot on the T-Mobile device (SM-G920T)
I need this because I want to use it in my car so whenever i enter my car it would auto turn on.
Any sggestions will be appreciated.

Yes. Download Macrodroid and setup a macro beginning with bluetooth as the trigger. Lots of other great macros you can setup as qell.

I know I cannot be the first to ask this but I cannot find a good answer. I have a verizon phone and I tried to create a tasker action to turn on the mobile hotspot and it fails. I used the wifi tether option. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work?
I'm pretty sure toggling radios needs root? I can't seem to find it right now, but there should be a "use root" checkbox somewhere in the action edit.
Can anyone confirm this? My Motorola Turbo 2 never had a root solution. Believe me I've been waiting 2 years for one.

I just setup a simple profile to test this. I had tasker turn the hotspot at a certain time. No issues, root wasn't needed(doesn't even give option to use it). What conditions are you using to turn it on?

I can't find the "use root" setting in mine...actually I can't find it in any of my profiles/actions, which is weird because I know I used it for something .
I've been using this for awhile to connect to my car head unit (Honor 6X/Cricket Wireless):
Profile State BT Connected CAR KIT ==> Action WiFi Tether Set On
with an exit task to turn WiFi back on/hotspot off when the BT connection drops.
Well, I am using Verizon Jetpack mobile WiFi Hotspot device and it's working pretty fine. I have it for 6 months now.

All u have to do is make the profile task and tap play button. That way it will tell you if Tasker is denied/granted SuperSU rights. No need to install secure settings anymore. Just tap Grant to SuperSU. Also, check your SuperSU app as sometimes it denies Tasker automatically

I've been trying to look for a simple solution to automatically turn on my Note 9's mobile hotspot when I get into my car. Unfortunately, I can't find any reliable working solutions. Especially, since it's impossible to root my phone (Verizon). I tried Macrodroid. The method it provides seems to only support old phones from a few years ago.
Are there any clever ways at all to automatically turn on the mobile hotspot on my phone when I go into my car? I don't mind occasionally manually turn on the hotspot. However, it's not a reasonable solution to manually turn on the mobile hotspot every single time I get into my car.

Thanks for the quick reply back. I was under the impression that Tasker can't do this anymore on newer Android OS's (8.1 and newer); at least, not on Samsung phones.. even with the "Nougat+ Tasker Tethering Control" plugin.
Has something changed that allows Tasker to work? Is there a new beta that allows this without rooting? If so, could you please point me to the URL that talks about this? I couldn't find it.

Hmm... doing this manually every single time isn't really feasible for me. It would be no different than toggling the mobile hotspot via the notification bar or telling Bixby to turn it on/off... it's still a manual process that I'm bound to forget to do.

I just set up a quick Tasker task to see if hotspot would turn on and it does, I'm not rooted.
This can be done with tasker, but I'm not sure it will work with the screen off (perhaps tasker can turn on the screen, though).
Create a task that does the following:
1. Turn off wifi
2. Launch Bixby voice (the 2nd entry)
3. Use autoinput to tap the keyboard icon at bottom left once Bixby voice is open.
4. Type "enable mobile hotspot".
I haven't yet found a better way to have tasker access Bixby for sending commands. Perhaps there's an intent or something we could use.
EDIT: I just tried creating a quick command, and using the Bixby button while screen off, was prompted to unlock the phone first. It would be amazing to utilize Bixby with Tasker, without unlocking the screen. Anyways, good luck.
Tasker is able to turn WiFi hotspot on perfectly with the screen off. No need to mess with Bixby.
If you're not using pie, Samsung good lock 2018 has "routines". I use for sounds profiles entering and exiting the work bubble.

The point for me was that it was automated, the Bixby button does work, but its just as fast in that case to pull down your notification shade and toggle it yourself. I just posted a response to someone else, Good Lock, Routines is the answer. See above.

With that app you could open the hotspot settings and stimulate a press on the toggle to enable it. It's complicated but works.
