Automatically turn on mobile hotspot when phone connnects to a bluetooth device - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I've been trying to look for a simple solution to automatically turn on my Note 9's mobile hotspot when I get into my car. Unfortunately, I can't find any reliable working solutions. Especially, since it's impossible to root my phone (Verizon). I tried Macrodroid. The method it provides seems to only support old phones from a few years ago.
Are there any clever ways at all to automatically turn on the mobile hotspot on my phone when I go into my car? I don't mind occasionally manually turn on the hotspot. However, it's not a reasonable solution to manually turn on the mobile hotspot every single time I get into my car.

Check out 'tasker'

there's a widget that turn on hotspot with just 1 click. but it only work on Oreo and on unlocked u1 firmware.

Thanks for the quick reply back. I was under the impression that Tasker can't do this anymore on newer Android OS's (8.1 and newer); at least, not on Samsung phones.. even with the "Nougat+ Tasker Tethering Control" plugin.
Has something changed that allows Tasker to work? Is there a new beta that allows this without rooting? If so, could you please point me to the URL that talks about this? I couldn't find it.

Hmm... doing this manually every single time isn't really feasible for me. It would be no different than toggling the mobile hotspot via the notification bar or telling Bixby to turn it on/off... it's still a manual process that I'm bound to forget to do.

I just set up a quick Tasker task to see if hotspot would turn on and it does, I'm not rooted.

This can be done with tasker, but I'm not sure it will work with the screen off (perhaps tasker can turn on the screen, though).
Create a task that does the following:
1. Turn off wifi
2. Launch Bixby voice (the 2nd entry)
3. Use autoinput to tap the keyboard icon at bottom left once Bixby voice is open.
4. Type "enable mobile hotspot".
I haven't yet found a better way to have tasker access Bixby for sending commands. Perhaps there's an intent or something we could use.
EDIT: I just tried creating a quick command, and using the Bixby button while screen off, was prompted to unlock the phone first. It would be amazing to utilize Bixby with Tasker, without unlocking the screen. Anyways, good luck.

Tasker is able to turn WiFi hotspot on perfectly with the screen off. No need to mess with Bixby.

If you're not using pie, Samsung good lock 2018 has "routines". I use for sounds profiles entering and exiting the work bubble.

Macrodroid has worked perfectly for me.

I know this might be kinda late but, I came here for the same thing with an S9 not rooted. i tried both Macrodroid and Trigger but they weren't any help, then I downloaded tasker and followed this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXzHoQJCx9M , i added another exit task to turn on wifi and that way I have it the way it was before entering the car once I exit.

Just set this up, will test it shortly. Thank you very much for your post, will edit and let ya know if it worked for me.
Update: This did not work for me. I have now tried, Tasker, Automate, Macrodroid and I think one other one, and none of them work.
I have an unrooted Sprint Galaxy Note 9, running Pie (Android 9). Is this working somehow for anyone else?

yes, try to update the bixby app.
I dont really care about turning off hotspot.
you can turn it off when your hand is free.
i have a wifi max360c radar detector,
when you driving, just press the bixby button to turn it on.

I also tried tasker autoinput and i can get the status bar to drop down, but it wont select the mobile hotspot icon for some reason.

I totally did, someone helped in the Note 9 subreddit. The answer is Good Lock, which is, and of itself, bad ass. The Routines App in Good Lock does it, easy peasy!
For OP credit, the thread is here. If you use Reddit, please upvote his reply.
An article and download link on Good Lock is here.

The point for me was that it was automated, the Bixby button does work, but its just as fast in that case to pull down your notification shade and toggle it yourself. I just posted a response to someone else, Good Lock, Routines is the answer. See above.

[Q] Is there an app that will turn on Wifi and Switch

the Network to 2G when you get home. I am having trouble getting phone calls at home with WIFI on and LTE enabled. There is some kind of issue with some phones that seems to send phone calls directly to voicemail when you have bot WIFI and LTE enabled at the same time. I have never used Tasker, would that be possible to set up this way? Do you guys know of any app that will do that automatically. Thanks in advance for help or feedback.

It looks like learning tasker would be my best bet to do what I need. I have been reading up and watching some videos on tasker and it is an amazing tool. A lot to learn but for the simple tasks that I want it sholuld not be to hard to setup. Thanks for the reply
Tasker won't switch your lte on and off with the stock Rom, but it will control WiFi and Bluetooth, and you will be able to set up a location based profile to do it automatically.

Okay, I have been looking over Tasker, it does so much it quickly intimitades new users like me lol. Thanks that answers my question and I appreciate your post.
I had the same problem with Tasker. Even with some of the tutorials, they steps they used must have been for an older version as they didn't even match what I was seeing on the screen.
If you want to try a much simpler interface try out Locale. Its the same concept, but the interface is a LOT easier to understand for newcomers. I have mine set using location to turn on WiFi/off BT/set ringers to 10% volume/check into FourSquare when I get to work, turn on BT/off WiFi/Open Google Listen & GasBuddy when I get in the car and such. Most of the plug-ins you can use with Tasker can also be used with Locale too.
However, I suspect what you are wanting to do would require a plug-in as it is a sort of advanced procedure but maybe if you find some app that will allow turning off 4G, you could at least have it open the app or toggle to turn it on and off as you leave home - if you can't have it happen automatically.

My understanding is that Google, since Jelly Bean, has pulled the API's for turning off radios and GPS (just as they have with battery stats in 4.4) in the interest of more secure devices. So without root, and in some cases something other than the stock rom, programmatical access to these settings is no longer possible.

Okay, that may be part of my trouble no root yet. This is the first phone I have not rooted since coming to android. I probably should have gotten the Dev Moto but I was stubborn and wanted to pick my design:silly:
Tasker should be able to do some of what you need, but as others have mentioned you will at the very least need root to get it working.

On the stock Moto X (XT-1053) you can turn GPS on/off via Tasker without root or using Secure Settings. It was a delight to see this, and not get the GPS nag screens I've previously gotten on a SGS3 (Verizon). Would have to play around, but you might be able to execute an activity or shortcut in Tasker that brings up the settings screen where you can choose 2G data and then script a screen tap in just the right place. Essentially automating the actions you'd take doing it manually. Not as pretty as a direct setting, but Tasker can execute this kind of thing very fast so it's of little bother to see it flash by on your screen.
Not on mine!

OK - Just made a task which turns on GPS waits several seconds and turns it off. Verified it was actually on/off when it said it was on. I'm running 4.2.2. My son "upgraded" to 4.4 on his Moto X, and Tasker GPS manipulation doesn't work on his. I didn't root, and verified as much with root checker, so it seems this is an "upgraded" feature in 4.4.
I'd consider rooting, but do like some of the Moto rom features so don't really want to move to an alternate rom & not wild about losing warranty. Maybe a little off topic, but if you root 4.2.2 and latter upgrade to some 4.4.x release, will you end up losing root?

Interesting... My recollection is this was disabled under JB on my Nexus 4. I didn't have 4.2.2 on my Moto X long enough to test.
Can you toggle airplane mode using tasker?
Off topic for here but a quick question. Would this be a good root quide to use. It seems pretty straightforward to understand and do. http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/11/root-motorola-moto-x-running-android-4-4-kitkat/ That site has been around and I think it is reputable but wanted to check.
Dunno, but I am not sure you're gonna be able to toggle LTE even if rooted. At least the description of Secure Settings suggests you can't without a custom rom.
If you turn off mobile data, does that solve your incoming call issue?

Unfortunately:cyclops:, they consider that a security issue. So unless you use a hack, you are SOOL.
I suppose it is a bit of a risk but the range of NFC is so limited. Too small to penetrate one's pocket or read from a distance. The only thing I used it for was in the car to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth which kicked off a chain reaction to start/stop Pandora streaming. Now I have to wakeup the phone first to scan NFC and connect BT. Not that big an inconvenience but I did like the option.

I guess its only a matter of time before a Dev figures this out.

It's no more a security risk than being able to enable "Ok Google" when the screen is locked. Not being able to to use NFC when the screen is locked has always annoyed me and was glad Xposed allowed me to do it with KitKat, alas no more. Even my work Blackberry, any current BB10 model and supposedly the most secure of the OSes, allows me to enable NFC when not locked.
Lost in translation?

We are not talking about being able to enable NFC when the screen is not locked. We are talking about having NFC enabled, and the device is sleeping with screen off, not being able to have NFC detect tags or what not without first turning screen on then also unlocking the device. I think you know this but just must of typed it wrong. If not, NFC works great with screen on once past the lock screen. I never disable NFC, I use it the same as the previous post. Getting in car, turns on bluetooth and then launches Pandora and GPS.
With the new Android Auto app and a supporting head unit, all you have to do when you get in your car is plug your phone into a USB port and everything else is automatic. Yeah, one great thing about Nexus 6 and mobile hands free tech.

You're correct, it's a miss-type and I wrote "unlocked" instead of "locked" - corrected.
I too also always keep NFC enabled, but having to unlock the phone is a real nuisance, thankfully as I also keep Bluetooth on now I can set my in-car to be a trusted device that disables the lock, so once the the connection is made I know I can just tap the phone without worrying. But now I don't even do that as I get Tasker to detect the connection and do it for me
I'm bumping the hell outa this thread. Just bought 20 of my first NFC tags to use various places just to find out NFC is disabled when the screen is off!? Mega-fail.

Anyone have any luck getting this working?
I've tried the Xposed module and can't seem to get screen off detection working.
I'm on 5.1.1 (LMY48I)...
Im in the same boat as Jazic... any updates here?
no way?
You would think this functionality would be natively inherent...
This should be at least a quasi-option.
Like you should be able to enable NFC while screen is asleep to a white-listed tag, and be able to set it to wake up screen or not, and be able to unlock phone or not.
So long as a white-list is required it's not a security risk.
It would also be cool to be able to set up app specific UI macros to initiate from NFC.

Turn on/off mobile hotspot

I know I cannot be the first to ask this but I cannot find a good answer. I have a verizon phone and I tried to create a tasker action to turn on the mobile hotspot and it fails. I used the wifi tether option. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work?
I'm pretty sure toggling radios needs root? I can't seem to find it right now, but there should be a "use root" checkbox somewhere in the action edit.
Can anyone confirm this? My Motorola Turbo 2 never had a root solution. Believe me I've been waiting 2 years for one.

When BT Connected, Turn on WiFi HotSpot

Hello All,
Looking for a solution to the title. Need to make my phone turn on WiFi HotSpot when it connects to the Bluetooth in my car. I tried this with Tasker and a guide I found online, but it fails and says error executing action: WiFi Tether.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
OP, I've tried to replicate the problem and it seems that the app doesn't have the proper permissions. Although all app permissions are enabled in the app settings, I think it's missing an additional permission. See screenshot below. You might want to contact support for the app to get the issue resolved.
As for a work around, it may be possible to do what you want with NFC stickers.

Yep, same thing I was getting. None of the automation apps for this particular scenario that exist on the Play Store work either. SecureSettings plugin for Tasker also will not enable WiFi Hotspot. Seems to be by design. I'm just going to go the NFC route since there is a particular spot I put my phone in the car every time. Thanks for the reply!

NFC will not turn on WiFi Tether it's an issue with the app not requesting the permission or Something with the Samsung Software. I had an LG G6 and it was working fine. The way I resolved my issue I use autoinput. Now it's working fine. see the attached:

I did it backward this time. I created the task first and then I create the profile. I use the state connect to BT to trigger the profile. Also it's very important that you enable smart lock, so your car BT can disable the lock screen and autoinput can do the job. You would need to buy the full version of autoinput since the lite version won't work.

I have a Unlocked Note 8, I have tried everything I can think of, and I cannot get Bixby to enable mobile hotspot. I cannot even get her to go to settings/connections.... She always runs into hiccups, or she wants to try again later. If I say "tethering settings", she uses the search box in settings and I can see the button that gets me to the correct page of settings, but I cannot get her to click it. Is this limitation Sprint trying to put their grubby little paws on everything, or am I alone with this issue.

I don't have the subscription, but I tried it just to see. Maybe your having an issue like I was two weeks ago. It was weird. But I had to uninstall all my bixby updates and reinstall them, and it worked great again. Before that, it was acting very, very uncharacteristically weird...

Are you referring to (USB) tethering or (mobile) hotspot? If the latter, the "Turn on hotspot" /"Enable hotspot" and "Turn off hotspot"/"Disable hotspot" commands should work. If you use "the keyword "tethering, Bixby will assume USB Tethering (or ask for clarification).
I use Bxactions , created an app with tasker which open mobile hotspot, set in bxactions by pressing the button 2 times to run my app.
-When I press 2 times it close wifi and open mobile hotspot
-Pressing again 2 times close mobile hotspot and open wifi.
No need to unlock
I did it for my personal use but if anyone need it here the apk

Actually I've tried every key word I can think of even searching the settings to bypass not being able to get directly to the connections menu. I even called Samsung and they had me boot in safe mode and test it. They said I had a software problem and wanted me to send it in for servicing, but they also said that it's not normal for android system webview to be disabled which I think is incorrect so I'm not sure what to think. I had a Sprint branded version of the note 8 before I returned it for an unlocked version and I'm wondering if my Samsung cloud data is messed up somehow. Sorry if this is hard to follow as I'm doing voice to text while driving from Alabama to Atlanta. Thanks for all the great suggestions so far and if you think of anything else let me know.
One last thing, is it normal to have all these options about Internet while the data server is on and also have access to IOS hidden menu and something called Korea mode?
