How the F&*k did this happen??!!!??? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

I usually buy my phones second hand through craigslist and such. Well, I came across a S8 that had a clean IMEI number and when I checked it through T-Mobile's IMEI checker, it showed up clean with no balance on it. So I meet the guy. Check the IMEI again before handing over my money and it still shows clear of any balance or blocks. I power up the phone, make sure the IMEI number matches on the box and I hand over my hard earned money. Used the phone all afternoon and at night, I dont know why, I decided to check the same number I've been checking all day and now it shows that there is a balance on the phone. HOW THE HELL DID THIS GUY DO THIS???? I always cover all my bases when buying a used phone, but this came out of left field. Any input or suggestions???

Mobile insurance will cover lost or stolen. What is to stop a man selling a phone from telling the insurance provider or the carrier in this case... That the phone was stolen after selling it? The minute it gets reported as stolen the Imei will flag. I would recommend calling TMobile... Provide text messages and proof of sale if you can.

Its still working. Its not flagged as stolen. It went from not having an account balance on it to having an account balance on it. Im assuming that the seller will not pay on it anymore which would lead to its eventual blacklisting. But how can a phone have no balance and then a balance on it?

Maybe he was selling same day he bought it and wasn't showing in their systems yet. I know sometimes it can take 24 hours to show up.

I got mine for $400 and luckily it went smooth as butter.

The same thing happened to me on swappa. I bought the phone and when I tried to sell it on swappa too the phone has a balance with tmobile. I asked swappa and the told me that tmo page is not up to date and sometimes give false info. I think the phone was bought the same day or something like that. Im lucky paypal covered me.

I have heard that phones will not show as financed until they are activated for the first time. So buy the phone, remove the sim, and it wont show as financed until its activated for the first time.
Always meet at a tmobile store and have them check the guys account.

Well the phone is currently working. I guess Ill just have to wait until he stops paying and the phone gets blocked. Hopefully at that point, we will have root and I can change the imei

Could be a "Buy one Get one" deal they just started....guy got 2 phones, opened 2 lines to get the second "free one", then canceled the line after selling phone to you. This would make the phone from the canceled line go back to owing full device price...

File a police report. That is theft by swindle. Also ask police to get video evidence from the placethe sell occured. That guy will go to jail.

TMobile BOGO doesn't work like that. Your line has to be in good standing for at least 2 months or so till you prepaid Mastercard comes in. Then you can cancel it. If you cancel before your MasterCard comes in, your BOGO deal invalidates.

edit: nevermind. This will only cause an argument. Don't feel like dealing with it.

If gets blocked, just pay $50 to clean/imei repair. After this your phone will never get blocked. You wont be able to file insurance though. I would call tmobile and register the device in your account. If he was using his number to text you to your existing number (now registered with your s8), insurance will deny his claim. Thats why i always do a test call with my sim on the bought phone calling the sellers number. This will auto deny the claim since insurance assunes claimant knows you.

Another reason why PayPal SUCKS

So here is my absolute HORROR STORY of dealing with PayPal.
I sold a phone on eBay (an Evo with a clean ESN and rooted w/ICS) and the seller emails me a few days later saying the phone can't be activated and they were on the phone with sprint for 3 hours and the "other Evo they bought was able to be activated (wtf? why would they buy two for the same account??)" so I asked them for the ESN number to double check... they give me the serial number. REALLY? You've been on the phone with Sprint for "3 hours" but don't know the damn ESN number??? The person is obviously a LIAR. I eventually get them to give me the ESN (which sprint says they can activate and say they haven't had anyone trying to activate the ESN... proving they are a liar). I ask why they didn't just go to the store since I looked up their address and they had one close by. They ignore the question and say they are going to file a report against me. I say go ahead, thinking paypal will listen to my evidence.... NOPE!!!!!
PayPal completely IGNORES the evidence and after freaking WEEKS they give her the money back!!! I have NO PHONE, NO TRACKING NUMBER, and NO MONEY!!!

Oh and get this.. "the phone can't be activated because it has ICS...". I literally screamed in anger when I read this. I've activated phones rooted with ICS a million times, and it was in the damn description that it had ICS.

I used to take up for Paypal when others would report similar issues; but, when it happened to me, I finally understood just how merciless Paypal can be.
I had an old iTunes account floating out there that I forgot to cancel, and also forgot to pull my info from the account. It was totally my fault for leaving the stuff out there like that, I don't deny it, but what happened next forever changed my view of Paypal.
Somehow, someone got ahold of this account, and purchased two iTunes gift cards in the amount of $50 each. As soon as these hit my bank, I contacted Paypal, and explained that I had no idea what was going on. Their reply was that they were freezing my account, and that I needed to contact Apple and try and find out what was going on.
While I was going 'round and 'round with Apple, three more charges went through on my "frozen" account with Paypal. Meanwhile, Paypal support swore up and down that there was no way that someone could use a frozen account.
Finally, Apple found the old account, closed it, and refunded all of the purchases. Paypal never really lifted a finger to help me.

Paypal is a good example of a company that has become too big to care. I've had dozens of problems with them, from bugs in their website, to bs big company politics. Unfortunately, in the end, where else are you gonna go?
Pay pal was a great site. You could look into Amazon Payments.
That sucks man PayPal should at least guarantee that the item gets returned to seller then refund the money. Best of luck

I had a paypal account suspended years ago when my sister in law, with the same name as me, screwed someone over on ebay. Same name, same TOWN, so they told me they considered it the same person.
I literally had to convince her to get a scan of her ID and mine to sort it, and it took weeks after the info was sent in.
Since then, I still use it, but I attach it to an account that I ONLY use for paypal and I never leave money in there for longer than I need to for a purchase.
In my experience paypal is all about supporting customers and just pushing aside sellers, which is proven by your case, they just always assume that the seller is some dodgy no code crook when often its the other way round
Yeah, horrible situation. How they can simply refund the purchaser's money without making sure that the seller gets the original item back is beyond ridiculous. Obviously it would take some capital but this would be a great time for someone else to step in and create a secure site.
Would it be possible to implement a system that acts as escrow, holding the buyer's funds electronically until the transaction is complete and only refunding the cost if the original item is first returned to the seller in case of dissatisfaction?
The escow style idea should be the way that it is. I have had to return an item bought via paypal and I was told in order for the seller to get the money back I needed to show proof of shipping with tracking. I had no problem with this, of course. I do know that the money was not pulled from me until I provided this.
I think paypal plays on a case by case basis for some crazy reason, because the stories that you read/hear about often have no real similarities.
I'm glad my dealings with PayPal have been limited to using them as an intermediary for credit card transactions with sketchy sellers (mostly eBay). I'm not giving anyone direct access to my bank account, especially with stories like these... jeeze.
I had many of good and bad experiences with paypal. They've rolled on me and gave my money back to a buyer. Luckily, I got the sold item back.
I had my identity stolen using paypal and they had my back like no other. It overdrew the associated bank acount by 2000 dollars, and not only was it all reimbursed, but they covered my overdraft fees and gave me 200 dollars for the inconvience. I also got the bank to waive the same overdraft fees and came out another 150 dollars ahead.
The cookie crumbles both ways.

Some weird buseniss took some money from account. So I asked paypal to but it back, they did. And then I had to do security check to see of my account was hacked. I had to sent a letter from my bank with adress etc. But I do everything only, so they say to send bill for electricity, but I dont get no bills, I live with my parents. I used paypal 2 years ago for the last time, I was a happy user, but know there are still 50 freaking euros I cant, get back

Yeah ik bro. There were multiple times when paypal would just refund the buyer's money and I would end up getting scammed even though the phones/tablets I was selling were perfectly functional. [Q] Bought AT&T Note 3 from craigslist, seller reported it as stolen afterwards

Bought AT&T Note 3 from craigslist. Seller reported it as stolen after selling it to me. AT&T now blacklisted the phone. What can I do?
So I fully verified the phone before buying it, checked IMEI at AT&T store and everything was clean. I paid $570 for the phone to the craigslist guy. Two hours later, he reported it as stolen to get another phone from his AT&T insurance. AT&T detected the IMEI of my Note 3 and blacklisted the phone.
I already filed a case with the police. I have all the proof that I bought the phone and I also remembered his license plate of the car. Did some google search and I have the Guy's full name, his car information and his house address. I have all the documents to prove that I bought the phone from him.
I went to AT&T store and also talked to 3 different people at AT&T customer care. Even though I have all the documents, AT&T refused to remove the phone from blacklist. As per AT&T, the only way to remove it from blacklist is to have the original owner call AT&T and request for it.
The police also didn't seem very positive. They kinda told me that they will do their best but they can't guarantee anything and they will have to talk to AT&T about the policy. Its been 45 days since I reported the case to the police and there has not been any progress yet. One of the police officer 'hinted' me that I should sell the phone to someone else on craigslist.
What can I do in this situation, reddit? Please help me. I think changing IMEI is illegal and very difficult to do. I know changing IMEI discussion is not allowed on this forum, but I own a pantex dumb phone from 10 years ago. Can I replace my IMEI with another phone I own? Is there any other way to get my phone working?

You can indeed file a police report. He stole your IMEI number. That's what you are filling the report on. Your proof of purchase is what you need to show the police showing that you own that IMEI number. Take him to small claims court if you have to, it normally cost $25 bucks or so depending on where your located and present your case. AT&T can also help you, but it depends on how you sugar coat it to who you're talking to.

As I said, I already filed a police report 45 days ago.
From Police: "We are still investigating. We have filed subpoena to AT&T to release the seller's account information" I tried following up with police couple of times and I get the same response everytime. Police has a copy of all the documents and my email exchange including phone logs with the seller.
As per AT&T: "As far as we are concerned, the phone still belongs to the original owner, and ONLY HE can call AT&T to remove the phone from AT&T blacklist". I showed AT&T the proof of purchase and copy of the police report I filed but they didnt care looking at it.
At this point, I am down $570. I do not want to scam someone else on craigslist by selling this phone. I just want this phone to work. Is there anyway I can get this working?

You need to find a way to talk to their back office. Your gonna have to do some digging and calling, but ultimately they have the ability to whitelist the phone again. Keep following up at the police department at least once a week to get a status. Ask them how long AT&T has to respond.

So, AT&T will release the information within 2 weeks from the day it received the request. Police filed the subpoena on 25th Nov (Don't know if they faxed it or used the regular mail). By this timeline, I think police should have gotten all the information they need by now. I called the detective last week and she was still waiting for the AT&T's response. I am going to follow up with police again tomorrow. (I dont want to bug police a lot, I dont want to annoy them when they are trying to help me)
On a side note, since I have the guy's address, if I go to his house and knock the door to talk about this-- am I breaking any law here? Is it called trespassing when I have a legit reason to talk to the house owner?

Just be careful, you never know about craigslist people. He could shoot you I suppose. As for repairing IMEI's I don't think anyone on XDA will help since they don't like dealing with stolen phones.

I would type up a letter and slide it under his front door. Explain to him that you have filed a police report that is being actively investigated, and that you are prepared to take it to court. Tell him that you simply need him to call AT&T to remove the phone from blacklist.
If I were in your situation, I might even go so far as to suggest (in the letter) that the police are somehow waiting on your permission to pay him a visit (lol idk) OR that AT&T has requested the police report and will block the new IMEI in suspicion of fraud. Also, include all of the info you have on him (i.e. full name, license plate, etc).
I forgot to mention, I know a guy who had this same exact problem. Bought a phone from att had it on his account for awhile then the previous owner reported it stolen.
Att let him buy a brand new Note 3 for new contract price.
It sounds like you have done everything a reasonable person can do in this situation and your efforts will make things a lot easier for the police as it sounds like you have done a lot of the leg work for them.
I know you are out $570.00 and that sucks, but you need to give the police time to gather records, interview the seller and to conduct their investigation. I would recommend given them a call once a week and checking in though so the case does not become stale. A respectful and appreciative attitude will go a long way when speaking to the investigating officer.
I don't know about Minneapolis, but here in small town Alaska, you could anticipate this taking anywhere from a few months to a couple of years to be resolved. I'm sure the police in Minneapolis are just as busy as the police here and this crime isn't a priority to any department unless the crime and or criminal is part of a larger problem that is being investigated.
It's a huge benefit that you have tracked the seller down already and given the police a lot of evidence to go on initially. This alone may move this into a 'give me' arrest and prosecution and police are like anyone else in that they have no problem picking low hanging fruit.
As for going to the sellers house...bad idea. If he has an IQ of 100, he can kill you if so inclined and not face prosecution. By going to his house to 'talk' to him, you will be seen as the aggressor and you do not want to be in that position. Best case scenario is you end up dead, injured or in jail yourself.
Police departments put out PSA's for a reason telling people not to buy phones from Craigslist. It is also common knowledge that if you buy a phone from Craigslist or another unknown private party, you have the seller call the provider and have them release the phone to you before giving them one red cent.
Let the police handle it.

SS and ROMs not going to help you with stolen IMEI's
From my time working as a rep and assistant manager for ccare, this will be a hard process to reverse; I saw this happening a lot, divorced couples, estranged friends.This is due to all of the scammers and thieves out there trying to make a quick buck on stolen phones. Its a good thing unfortunately it looks like it works both ways. The idiot doesn't need to report the phone stolen to get an insurance replacement. Att and asurion are two different companies, where they share info when relevant, so after the claim was processed, they wont care if he whitelists the device. But of course he would have to do that, or someone posing as him. The best course is police action; it may take a while, but its probably going to be the only way....
if you unlock it with region lock away by chainfire it will work on any other network regardless of blacklist.

Having a bad IMEI phone regardless of being unlocked will still be denied by carriers such as MetroPCS and TMobile. That thread you linked he didn't really weigh in on whether or not he used his phone in the USA after being unlocked.
UPDATE: 12/19/13 Received call from Police
So I just received a call from the detective who was investigating the case. She got the information from AT&T. She went to the suspect's house and she interviewed him. Suspect said that this was an "error" and he didn't know about it. The detective made him call AT&T while she was at his house and he removed it from blacklist. Detective told me that she spoke to AT&T too who confirmed that its been removed from blacklist. Detective was told by AT&T that if you power off and power on the device, its good to go now.
But, I called AT&T myself to confirm that this IMEI is removed from blacklist and they denied it. Its still showing as blacklist on AT&T side. The rep told me that if the request was made to remove from blacklist, it will take 24-48 hrs before the device is removed from blacklist. So fingers crossed.
I will give it benefit of doubt and wait for 48 hours before calling AT&T again to verify that its been removed from blacklist. If not, I will contact the police again.
One thing I did not like about this case is the suspect said it was an "error" and officer did not do anything against him. He was indeed committing a fraud. Shouldn't he be charged for his actions? I would be satisfied if he was punished in some way for wasting my time and making me go without a phone for a month.

If I go to small claims court, what can I claim for? For the hassle I had to go through? For my time? Can I charge him for $ amount for this?

Buying off craigslist? What else should I do?

So, theres a guy on craigslist who was selling his Note 3 in box for $400, and I offered $325. Now, what I had planned to do was to meet in public, most likely at the AT&T store, pop in my sim, and check to make sure its working. Also, I was going to check the imei number, and make up a bill of sale with the imei included. Anything else I can do?
And if the phone is linked to their contract, and they end up not paying, that will blacklist the phone correct? Will a bill of sale protect me?

Well, I think I scared him off anyway. I requested pictures, the imei number, receipt of purchase, and that he was going to have to sign a bill of sale. He said ok, and hasn't replied in two hours. Oh well, I need to save money for a trip anyway, I'm just tired of looking at my LG Optimus G Pro. I want to upgrade, as stupid as it sounds.
Nothing will protect you against blacklisting of IMEI numbers. It's only going to get worse on Craigslist with programs like AT&T Next. Even if it's not blacklisted today it might be in 2 months when the not paid phone hits collections.

You did the right thing..who cares if you think you scared a thief away...You protected yourself from scumbags that rip good people off..spending that kind of money and getting blacklisted isn't worth all the hassle.....If you find a honest seller he/she won't hesitate at all for a bill of sale...

True..but as long as he had a proper "bill of sale" least he has some evidence of a crooked seller,and have more options then nothing at all.....But your exactly right though, and it will get worse with more carriers offering upgrades sooner.
I've sold many phones on ebay and craigslist and also purchased quite a few. I never had any problems doing so. Just use common sense, see what the person is like, never go alone when meeting someone. And obviously make sure it's not blacklisted. A person who was a serious seller would do whatever needed to make the sale, however it is best to explain why you want the information you're asking for. Otherwise they'll think you're just being annoying lol
This thread is about a guy that bought an N3 off Craigslist, and the seller blacklisted it a few hours after the sale (insurance fraud). You may want to make sure the seller transfers ownership to you with AT&T.

I never had any problems doing so. Just use common sense, see what the person is like, never go alone when meeting someone. And obviously make sure it's not blacklisted. I just wanted to share this support article page I found while searching more extensively into the $300 off at T-Mobile for their variant of the 6T. According to it, the promotion will be ending on November 8th.

Ooh that's a good idea. I was hoping to do it in person just so it wouldn't potentially be rejected, but it was like a $50 trade in phone, so I'm not too terribly worried about it either.
Yeah, just go into store, give them the imei, and then you have 30 days.

When I bought mine at the store on the day of Tmo's launch, they told me that if I purchased in the store, I had to have the trade in phone with me, at that time to trade in.
If I would have waited for the phone to come in the mail, Tmo would include a pre-paid postage label as well as a 30 day window to send it in. Not sure if this was just a way to keep my business in the store or not
I went to the T mobile store with my One Plus One phone for trade in. The phone actually had a problem. The sim tray is gone and a part of my previous sim is stuck inside the sim slot. So the phone is kind of useless for me. Other than that the phone doesnt have any problem.
The t mobile employee checked the below
- Whether display is working fine
- What is the model number of the phone
- Connected to charger and checked whether the charging is working fine
He didn't check the sim tray
After that he gave me the prepaid label and envelope and asked me to send it to T mobile.
Does this mean I got lucky and they approved my trade in phone?
Or will there be another set of inspection once this phone reaches T mobile. If so and if they found the sim tray / slot issue , will they deny the trade in offer for me?
From what I heard they do a much more thorough inspection when u mail it back and they can reject the trade in unless the rep approved it in store already.

The only reason I went with T Mobile is because of this Trade in offer
So they give you paperwork if the phone had water damage, if the screen is cracked, of the device can power on, if the device is locked to a user. I traded in my OnePlus 2 and it didn't have a great charge for the battery but it easily passed.
To answer the question, all the person in the store does is enter the IMEI number. Once they do that, TMobile sends you an email stating you have 30 days to send it back. They give you postage in your email which you can print out.
The in store person doesn't approve it per say, just they make sure the IMEI matches what they have in the computer.

My trade in was approved in store..no paperwork..they checked for water damage etc. got the credit show up to my bill in the erp section along with 50 dollars upfront. So yes reps can approve it directly at a corporate retail store. Not sure about authorized resellers.

If you have an eligible device for trade-in, I'd go that route (EIP).
I would have, but, I didn't have a trade-in, so, JOD was my next best option, only $30 out of pocket in-store & i was on my way.
There's no guarantee that T-Mobile will carry the OP7, could be they only do the T models, or, perhaps, this is a one & done deal, no one really knows at this point.
Worse case scenario for you is you'll have a brand new OP6T at less than ½ of MSRP & if you find it's not for you, you could still sell it & come out ahead.

You get the bill credits regardless,but,I'd wait until you actually see them before paying off the device in full.
The bill credits actually go towards your entire bill,so, they'll continue until they expire.
As for the SIM Unlock, technically,you need to have the phone for 40 days & pay off the balance ($280),but,a lot of people have had success in getting it already, some still owing on the balance.
I'd call 611 & talk to your regional Team of Experts if you want to try your luck, they're more helpful than the Twitter & chat B.S....

Vodafone UK Scam

Well, kind of...
My s9+ died on Christmas eve (gutted), so in boxing day I took myself to the Vodafone store and got myself a nice shiny new S10+... or do i thought.
First they bought out a new phone sealed in the box. Scanned it through and told me it was already reserved for someone else. No problem, they had "plenty in stock".
This tone he bought out an unsealed Vodafone box. Very defensively, without ne asking, he declared, "don't worry, this box is because some official Samsung boxes get damaged in transit. We move the contents to this box, so it's still the full brand new product". I'm fine with this and sounds ok.
I luckily opened the box to put my sim and sd in to it. I find that the earphones are missing... odd. I then inspect there phone and find there is a huge gap down the side of the screen and the metal, with glue showing... this is clearly NOT a new phone.
I point this out to the guy and he initially said he had processed it, so I'd have to make a claim. Then I pointed out that I have a 2 week cooling off period, and also, if they want ne to leave the side without causing a fuss, they had better get me my proper new phone.
Luckily they did just that. Opened it up and it was a totally different story. Phone had the screen protector on it, all items in there. It was then clear that phones in the Vodafone boxes must be damaged returns and NOT brand new phones transferred to other boxes.
Just a heads up to anyone else who might fall for this trap. If they bring out your ne phone in anything other than a perfectly sealed Samsung box, don't accept it!

I guess it's possible. Then again, my wife took out a new contract with Vodafone late last year. She saw the phone she wanted in store and stated several times that's the one she wants, to remarks of, "good choice" etc.
She took out the contract being led to believe the phone was included. Once all the signatures where completed we sat there waiting for the phone. The agent then told us, it doesn't include the phone and they don't have any in stock, so we'd would have to purchase the phone individually else where.
Although we had the cooling off period, we had already processed the number transfer with the agent there, so it would be messy to back out.
It seems they are all a little underhand everywhere! This was a different store in a city 2 hours away from where I had my experience.
My girlfriend took SIM contract from vodafone. And before she sign contract asked how about network coverage. Agent said it is perfect 4G speed is aprox 40Mb/s. So next day she put sim in phone to try. Ok sim card is activated. But coverage is ****, network speed is crap. Fastest what she got 0.78Mb/s download and upload 0.12Mb/s. To use Whatsapp for calls most been impossible. Ok she lived one week with that sim. Contacted vodafone and CS said we have network issue in your area etc. Nothing changed. After all she went to vodafone store to cancel and that was mess. In store guy spend more than one hour with CS / about 8 times transfered to different department, third CS service cancelled contract and wasn't able to give PAC code to keep number and finally story doesn't ends here. Vodafone for less the 7 days charge her £15. Ofcorse after two month of fighting vodafone refunded £11 from £15. Now she is with EE and no prob at all.

To be fair, thay just sounds like bad luck with an outage in the area, but I do agree, most suppliers ate difficult to cancel with.

Sales involving contracts are a nightmare for retailers to handle returns on, mainly because of obstacles in the way because the seller doesnt have much interest in taking customers out of the contract. The vendor blames the service provider and vice versa. In situations like these, its 99.99999999% likely that the retailer had a rash of returns or maybe even bought a damaged freight shipment on purpose to maximize profits and are having to cover their butts when issues are brought up. Sketchy retail practices to say the absolute least, but still not likely Vodafones doing
