Hi there, just though i post this to clear some of the current query i have about rooting XZ.
Please let me know if these are correct:
Up till today, the latest rooting on XZ still implicate the following concerns:
1. DRM keys WILL be lost forever
e.g. no more Music ID/Gracenote within the Walkman app plus probably most importantly, as asked all the time and all over the place in the T/mint forums: loss of Bravia Engine.
2. older Xperia devices sometimes got issues after unlock of bootloader (BRICK after FOTA update)
My questions regarding the 2 points:
1. will there be a method coming later (from the old xperia rooting trend), that will retain the DRM key/Bravia Engine?
2. What were the chances of bricking the older Xperia handsets in the past????
was this mainly caused usually by the earlier version of rooting method?

Maybe someone is working on it right now. But you'll just have to wait and see. Can't look into the future.

Dude...you lose the DRM Keys if you unlock your bootloader...read the posts and threads more careful...
well.. to gain full root access, atm unlock the bootloader is a must right???
Or are u saying now that i can
-just root
-without unlock bootloader?
tbh i just want to have root access for titanium, so if this is available then i'll do it!
i just thought unlocking the bootloader is a must for full root at this stage..
You can't root without unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking bootloader will result in losing DRM Keys. Simple
you can wait till a dev make a root without the need of unlocking the bootloder...which is secretly being done by some awesome devs ) patience my friend )
Hope that will be soon

General Knowledge about Xperia Phones (some how-to's about the basics)
This was intended for the Xperia Z but covers most things for all current Xperia Phones.
Flashtool for Xperia devices
Flashtool is a Multi-Tool by @Androxyde and @DooMLoRD which is primarily used for flashing Firmware to your device, but includes a whole bunch more neat things.
It doesn't support the Z3 Series yet, but will surely do in near future.
You can download it and get more information on the official website.
How to use Flashtool
You can find a full tutorial on how to use Flashtool here.
How to unlock the bootloader on the Z3c
Find the full guide here.
How to resurrect a soft-bricked phone
Follow the FlashTool tutorial to reset your device to stock.
Xperia Phones and custom recoveries
For those new to the Xperia line
Xperia Phones don't have a dedicated recovery partition, the recovery is stored in the ramdisk.
It's impossible to flash recovery images via fastboot on stock rom, the recovery needs an extra kernel including ramdisk modifications.
I have a question for anyone who has been familiar with the Xperia world for a while. With the released of the previous couple generations(Z1/Z1C/Z2), how long after the phone was released was a root method available?

This greatly differs.
On the Xperia Z there quickly was an exploit,
on the latest (Z1, Z2) there was a long time (some months) no rooting method.
Sonys on 4.4 + are hard to root with a locked bootloader.
However this may or may not change. with upcoming Z3 series.

For real? I've always heard Sony phones (and Sony in general) are very open to rooting and the open source community. They're international phones after all, with unlockable bootloaders...

Sony is contributing to the open source community, and is actively helping devs, right.
If you'll unlock the bootloader, rooting will be no problem if there's an advanced kernel with recovery available.
Locked bootloader phones are a pain to root, but i'm sure some devs will gain root, even though it may take a while.

So if I'm willing to unlock my bootloader...then root will be attainable almost immediately?

Pretty much yup and you'll also be able to use other kernels.
I know it might be a bit too early, but with respect to rooting, recoveries and custom ROMs, are there any difference between the two hardware versions for the Z3C?
Is it safe to assume that custom ROMs for the D5803 can be used on the D5833 and vice versa? I would assume the bootloaders and recovery would be the same, it's only the Radios being different?

It will most likely work, it did work on the Xperia Z C6602/6603 too.
I've added a link to unlock the bootloader for those who are interested in unlocking.
I assume, from reading threads on the Z1/Z2 models, that we will have to wait for a way to root without unlocking the bootloader before we are able to back up the TA partition, right? I would like not to lose the extra functionality, particularly for the camera, that the TA partition reportedly provides.
Is the move apps to SD option under the storage settings? I know they added it to the Z2.
Thanks in advance

Are you really sure about that? Can't check it for the Z2 is with my son now, but I have not seen it and honestly doubt it is there. Anyhow, the Z3C does (currently) not have App2SD.
Just unlocked the bootloader on my Z3 Compact yesterday. As near as I can tell, everything of importance continues to work: X-Reality still works, TouchID works (and even got an update), and the BIONZ engine appears to be working, as I managed to take an photography at ISO 12800 sensitivity.
I'm not exactly sure what is supposed to break upon unlocking the bootloader, but I'm certainly not suffering any consequences of it.

X-Reality was broken on pre-4.4 firmwares, but not any more on 4.4+.

What is affected in 4.4+ by losing the TA partition?

Can't say as my Z3c hasn't arrived yet.
Most likely nothing, maybe bionz image processing, but that's highly unlikely.
Hi guys!
I have the x3 compact since 3. October and i'm thinking about rooting it.. I have experience with the arc s and i dont want to unlock the bootloader because the z3 compact will get lots of updates for sure and then i can flash almost every rom with locked bootloader..
Is there any method now to root it or no way at the moment?
Thank ya anyways,
Yours slimy!

Wrong forum and answered like 50 times. I could answer it I suppose, but do a search.
Come on.. I thought an exploit had been found. See former post and use a "?"
Please post questions in the Q&A section
Thread moved
First and foremost, let me start off by saying.. I already HAVE used the search function to find threads related to this topic, however, most of them are very outdated, and don't give a straight-up answer to the question. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Z1S bootloader has a method for unlocking as of now. My question however is this... Are there any Z1S ( Not Z1) Compatible custom roms? Do regular Z1 roms work on the Z1S? and if so, is there a special procedure in making them do so? I just want to know this because I'm most likely gonna unlock my bootloader. and I would like to install a custom rom on my Z1S if possible, but I cannot afford to be taking the risk of bricking my phone if there is virtually no chance of a custom rom working for it.....
So... Any clear answers that can be given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
As far as I know...
The Z1s has never been unlocked. I have this phone and have had it since the beginning and it hasn't been unlocked. I'm pretty sure after many tries everyone finally gave up.
Hello,
I've been using these forums for years to root all my devices so thanks to all for the hard work.
I just want to know how I can root my Xperia Tablet Z SGP321. It's currently on Lollipop 5.0.2 (10.6.a.0.454).
I've looked everywhere and I can't find anything to simply root it, all I can find is for previous firmware and for other models.
Can someone please send me a link? My bootloader is is currently locked but an unlock is allowed so I can do that if required (did it with my Z2 and my Z3 so I know how).
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you :victory:

Wrong forum mate, go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-tablet-z
Besides that, asking questions like that is not allowed in general section, use Q&A instead.
Sorry about that, I was in a bit of a hurry.
Thanks for the link, I'll check there.
Can someone delete the thread pls?
I'll check if I can remove it myself though
