Does the unlocked version FULLY work on Verizon? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

I was looking to get the new HTC u11 which for Verizon can only be done unlocked but there are a ton of people having a ton of issues on Verizon with the unlocked model: IMEI not accepted on Verizon, missing bands, no cdma (so no 3g or 1x), missing visual voicemail, no immediate HD calling, no Wi-Fi calling, notification issues and Verizon essentially saying the phone was never qualified on their Network so support is limited and so will future updates to the phone like getting Wi-Fi calling working. So that option is dead to me as getting an unlocked phone without carrier bloat is great but not great if it's having this many issues.
So... I'm curious if the same thing happens with the unlocked version of the S8 on Verizon? Or is it 100% functioning just minus the carrier bloat?

Answer = no
No CDMA radio so no 3G or 1x in remote or spotty places. A tech told me.

According to Samsung.com it will work on Verizon. However, I haven't found if it fully works.

Works fine on VZW all s8's are using the same hardware, only difference is the customized carrier software.

Just like HTC - it will work to a limited degree. No 3g no 1x as no cdma radio. I need that ability so I passed.

The S8 has a CDMA radio. It is the same hardware that Verizon and Sprint use for the carrier model.

I'M on the unlocked model, notice my phone was using 3g so yes it can. For some reason my father in law was not able to add a line to our plan because my phone was marked on the account as incompatible. Was told to go get a new sim card and everything was working before and after so I'm not sure? The tech wasn't sure why I had to get a new SIM. I had popped it out of my iPhone 7 and it worked immediately on my s8. I have not found the wifi calling feature though.

Does UDP native tethering work our of the box on the unlocked model on Verizon? How about HD voice? Both of these work on my Moto X Pure, even though is is not Verizon certified.

Yes works great. I found a Cspire s8 plus that was Google locked. I unlocked it then sim unlocked it and flashed the U firmware. Only thing is no option for video calling and I haven't tried wifi calling but everything else works. I'm now using it on Verizon. Had the phone a month now.

Works fine with 3g...my office sux and my unlocked works in 3g on verizon just fine.
Best part about unlocked - no tether subscription check, so I can keep tethering my old unlimited data plan without paying the tether fee
From what I can tell, only visual voicemail is not working on verizon, but google voice forwarding is just as good. Plus it was like this on the 6p until it upgraded to 7.1 at which time it worked natively, so the S8 might eventually get the same treatment.

How do you properly set up Google Voice so that you can use it as Visual Voicemail. I tried setting it up via the old Legacy Google Voice link through PC browser. Thought I had everything working, but not sure. I may have enabled an extra step, as everytime I dial out, it hangs up and auto redials really quickly. Like it routes all outgoing calls through GV too. Sometimes it redials the same number, sometimes it's a completely random number.

They had me put in some crazy string into the phone. But make sure google chat is unchecked on the legacy site. Then click the little link for voicemail forwarding. Go through the prompts and it works fine. I had to put do not disturb so it doesnt ring through to my voice number, but it seems to working just fine. Make sure the setting on the non legacy site are all unchecked too

So far the only thing that doesn't appear to work is WiFi calling. VoLTE works but there is no indication of HD Voice on the handset.

Yes, this is because the IMEI is not "in the system" so you cannot use the phone to activate a new SIM unless you have the IMEI added to the VZW database. The solution to this is to active the SIM in a VZW handset and then put that SIM into the S8.

Do you see verizon wifi callin gone sm-g950u1

verizon wifi calling is only available in the VZW specific firmware for the device. i purchased an unlocked S8 and because i needed wifi calling, i had to flash the VZW specific firmware.

Hi knightsfury - Were you able to pull off getting the VZW firmware on your unlocked s8? I need the wifi calling/video calling, as well. have been trying to find a thread which explains this. Would you be able point in the right direction? Thanks!

What is the model number for the unlocked variant that works on Verizon? Can anyone link me to where to buy one?

yes i had no problems. in fact, i did this with 2 different new unlocked S8's (mine and my wife's). i followed the threads for flashing firmware in the guides section: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to

Great! Thanks for letting me know. I got it to work as well - I have HD & Wireless calling working, but still waiting on video calling because it is blocked as a service on our account from when we activated the phones unlocked. However, a CS rep told me they would work with higher tier tech support to see if the block can be removed. We will see...
Thanks again!

Confirmed... when I am out of LTE coverage areas there is no 2x or 3x , only 1x voice. In practice this means no MMS (2x), or any other data. No group texts, fun. You can still make and receive phone calls and SMS. This kinda sucks.

Settings -> About Phone :
Model: SM-G950U1
Baseband : G950U1EU1AQG2
Build: NRD90M.G950U1UEU1AQG2
If you look at available firmware for the SM-G950U1 : http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=SM-G950U1&exact=1&r=&v=&rpp=50 there are Verizon-specific ones. I'm going to go give one of those a try.

Unfortunately this means wiping the phone and dealing with Verizon bloatware... but that seems to be the cost for getting 3G back.

The different model variants, and different frequencies/bands worldwide.

Looking on the LG web site, it appears that the LG Watch Sport it is only available currently in the US and Korea.
In the US model W280A (AT&T) or W280V (Verizon)
In Korea W281 (with a choice of 3 difference carriers)
If you look at the specs of each one they are slightly different with regard to the frequencies/bands they can use, the frequencies/bands listed, tie up with the country/carrier they are sold for.
Now with regard to smartphones, and those with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, it appears that it is possible to reprogrammed the smartphone to different frequencies/bands, including LG smartphones. This to me indicates that the hardware is all the same, but only certain frequencies/bands are 'switched on' depending on the country/network carrier they are sold for.
Now seeing as the LG Watch Sport also has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, it seems reasonable to me that it might be possible to 'switch on' frequencies/bands on this watch like you can on a smartphone....
How you do this however, being android wear and not android, I don't know!
The reason for this?
I have a W280A in the UK, and it won't work with the UK frequency/bands, but i'm sure the hardware is capable, if the frequency/band selection can be changed in software, somehow...
I have read, that if you put an activated Verizon SIM in an AT&T watch, that everything will work as it should eventually. I would like to verify that.
I was able to take an activated SIM out of my Verizon tablet, and put it in a Watch Sport that I bought from AT&T. One, becuase it was cheaper, and two because you can get them from Verizon or Google right now. It worked perfectly.
The AT&T/Google Store edition of the Watch Sport cannot be added into the VZW DMD as it is not on the list of supported devices. trust me on this.
Whenever you stick an active SIM into the AT&T/Google Store Watch Sport it will identify in the switch and the billing system as a "Non-VZW Device". cellular data is the only thing that will work from this.
The only way the AT&T/Google Store version of the watch can be semi used on Verizon is to use Integrated Calling & Integrated Messaging. these are services that essentially forward calls and sms/mms messages from an active VZW phone to another device with Message+ and an active connection to the internet. this can be done on a wide array of devices from wi-fi only tablets to your desktop browser. the Watch Sport does not need to be active on a line of service to get this functionality enabled. you would just be able to use it anywhere that you don't have wi-fi. do not confuse this with what you will get from the VZW version. with it you will not be tied to Message+ and the Watch will be able to send/receive calls and text messages from it's own MDN as well as from your connected Phone.
At this point do not waste your money on buying the AT&T/Google Store version of the Watch Sport with the expectation that you will ever get it to work the way that the Verizon version does with VZW service. you will end up disappointed.

It's been announced that Verizon have cancelled the LG watch sport from their line up. So it never made it in store afterall.

This is exactly what I did, and the watch works perfectly. It very much does work. The fact that the site says that it's an "Non-VZW Device" means nothing. All that means is you didn't buy it from them. Me Pixel that I bought from Google says the same thing. You can order an activated SIM over the phone from Verizon, and they will mail it to you. My AT&T Watch Sport work as it should on Verizon.

How does your watch work perfectly on vzw network?? When the AT&T variant has radio bands that are not supported on Verizon network?.. it must be just connected to either the 2g network or 3gnetwork then.

Its hard for me to believe honestly. I was on Verizon when I first was gifted the att watch and spent hours with Verizon trying to get it to work and when you check the imei on this site: https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/, it STILL tells me my device is not compatible with the Verizon network? So unless you are a wizard, I'm not sure why it works for you and not anyone else...

Yes, it does say the IMEI is not recognized, but if you put a SIM that has already been activated, it will work just fine. I'm not the only one doing this. There are people on Reddit that are doing this too. Go over to the Android Wear thread and check it out.

so why when I put the verizon sim from my Galaxy s2 tablet in, it doesn't work? it works on my tablet though? I'm at a loss. Im on att now so I really dont care that much...just frustrating spending hours on the phone and in chat rooms with Verizon and not 1 of them could make it happen for me, all of them said it was incompatible due to the radios being different.
What am I doing differently? I mean, there isn't much to it.

It did take me some time tinkering with it, and yes the people at Verizon are worthless, but after a few reboots, it finally provisioned and started working. I powered off my pixel, and made calls, sent and received texts, and got email. I don't know now what else I could ask it to do. There was a phone setup app I had to run through.
Using developer options, and ADB debugging maybe, could this guide be used to change the LTE bands on our watches?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059
Did anyone try to change the bands with the above guide?

Anyone on n950u1 phone and metropcs?

I bought the 950u1(but didn't receive it yet) because of the fear of samsung closing the ability to cross flash u and u1 variants and I know metropcs(tmk) has u1 firmware.
Will the unlocked u1 variant have VOLTE and wifi calling out of the hole rather then flashing the u1(tmk) firmware?

Hey bro. I know nothing about Metro but my info may (or may not ha) help you.....is it gsm or cdma? I just bought N950U1 to use with a Straight Talk byop AT&T sim. I have been with straight talk for about 8 years and have been an android root junkie since I got my note 3....then the note 4....and now this beast note 8. I would like to think Im fairly knowledgable about the Android system but I have also been trying to sort through all the info about U vs U1 firmware and carrier flashing stuff but I cant quite figure out where to make my first move, or if I should, flash carrier firmware. I would like to try Oreo beta but I damn sure don't want to brick a phone I have zero warranty on. Hard for me to get over the idea of having to buy another $1000 dollar phone outright. From what I understand, carriers like straight talk, metro, family mobile, etc. Is that the sims are basically like a carrier unlocked phone. The service provider pays the big carrier (also uses their branding) to use the towers. They call it piggy backing. So the service is exactly as if you would be paying straight to the big carrier but without the contract and unnecessary BS. From what I have read, all the firmware is exactly the same multi CSC. So when you flash firmware and then put your sim in it actually does it's own thing through carrier. I couldn't get the January security patch update to show until I added "fota" to my apn and then rebooted and like magic it was there. I pay 60$ a month for unlimited data and have used 41 GB as of today since January 18 with not even a slight throttle. Because I have had straight talk so long I wouldn't know what to look for as far as ATT extra csc features. But if you are willing to find out and let me know I would be happy to check my phone for them. I do have download booster in settings. I only know because with my note 4 sometimes i would and sometimes i wouldn't depending on what rom i was on. Butni don't see volte. Maybe all this ramble was a little helpful. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Im probably gonna copy most of this post and start a thread or at least ask in the other threads for some more info.

It's gsm. Mvno of T-Mobile. I have an unlocked xfinity sm-g955 s8+ right now and had to carrier switch/cross flash to tmk "u1" firmware to get the two features running. Someone told me that they got those features running on T-Mobile "u" firmware and I tried it but it did not work for me. I saw the volte switch on the menu but wifi switch did not show up in the T-Mobile firmware.
I was just wondering if the multi-csc loaded some of the features on first boot up on a like "u1" branded variant.

Greyed out only Wi-Fi is working right now on metro I'm assuming all carriers
Gosh why do the carriers in the USA make it so hard to flash firmware and enable WiFi calling and VOLTE. In Europe its as easy as going on sammobile and flashing the carrier software in odin for the exynos N950F/FD variant... Some networks (like EE in the UK) are even firmware agnostic and just allow WiFi calling and volte on most firmwares including the unbranded BTU. It's as crazy as verizon and sprint sticking to CDMA :/

Both Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE is enabled by default. I'm not sure if I'm using VoLTE when I'm making calls old phones I had had a vo in front of the let signal bar when making calls on the Samsung j7 I'm not getting that on the note 8. If I look at history calls there is a Wi-Fi picture when I make a call on Wi-Fi. But not on VoLTE
Hope it's working get better audio calls now when on phone my data speed is still downloading at 30mbs when I surf the web and talk at the same time

You can test it by making a call without it enabled, it will drop to H+ or h. If you have it enabled and you make a call it will stay on LTE the whole call.

I bought the 950u1(but didn't receive it yet) because of the fear of samsung closing the ability to cross flash u and u1 variants and I know metropcs(tmk) has u1 firmware.
Will the unlocked u1 variant have VOLTE and wifi calling out of the hole rather then flashing the u1(tmk) firmware?

unlocked on Verizon

I'm not really new to this. I would always buy the phones, then root them when root was available. My question is if I buy the unlocked version and have it on Verizon, does anyone know what features won't work? Like I believe wifi calling on tmobile won't. But what about Verizon?
I THINK similarly, HD calling and Wifi calling won't work. I remember this from other discussions of unlocked Galaxy devices on Verizon.

Ok, thanks.... That is the problem I'm having cause I don't know about that part. Like I said, I normally just buy the phones then root them when root is available, but the s8 never got it or it took so long I didn't worry about it anymore. But I'm going overseas soon and would like to just swap sims and not worry about international charges
HD calling and volte should work. wifi calling a visual voicemail won't. check Samsungs page for compatibility.
my pixel 2 unlocked has EVERYTHING working on Verizon tho. dunno why.

Features you lose with unlocked phone on verizon network.
Visual Voicemail (VVM)
LTE Video Calling
Enhanced Address Book
VoWiFi (WiFi calling)
Family Base
Family Locator
that's worth it. no big deal except maybe wifi calling.

no way, cellular trash store will offer you phone with unlocked bootloader.

I have an unlocked S9+ on Verizon prepaid. Everything works fine including VoLTE and WiFi Calling. The only thing that doesn't is Visual Voicemail, but that's because I'm on prepaid. I'm sure the S10 will be the same.

Does Video Calling work on the unlocked s9+ on Verizon?
My unlocked note 9 on Verizon didn't have any features except HD calling and VoLTE. I worked with Verizon tech support forever, they couldn't figure it out. They indicated it was a Samsung issue. Samsung said it was a Verizon issue. I sold it on swappa then got a Verizon branded one because I need WiFi calling and texting.
I really hope my unlocked S10 plus isn't the same.

You could've flashed the VZ fw onto the U1. I converted my TMO Note to U1/XAA for better battery. Knox isn't tripped by signed packages.

I think Video Calling and Visual Voice Mail are for Post-Paid accounts only. I'm on Pre-Paid.
Plus I can use one of several other apps to video call, so I don't miss it. VoLTE and WiFi calling work great.
I can confirm that Wi-Fi calling IS indeed working on my unlocked S10+ on Verizon. Imagine that! The only thing I'm missing is Verizon's native video calling but that feature is so useless that it's not even worth mentioning.
Also, this thread is helpful describing all the features that work on Verizon:

Voicemail?

What is the best visual voicemail app? Does Samsung offer one of its own?
I have a T-mobile s10.
I do know that there is the T-mobile visual voicemail, but it is crappy, ugly, and crashes a lot.
What are some recommendations?
Thanks
Google voice is tried and true
You have voicemail built into the dialer, you just need to activate Digits on your line (Install the Digits app, activate, then uninstall it). I MUCH rather use Google Voice though, especially because of the free voice to text.

I don't think that this is going to work at least for now. A month or so ago, I have read somewhere while looking for build in voice mail and digits support on S10, that T-Mobile units don't yet support digits(possibly voicemail too) built into the dialer. The future software update should take case of that. Few weeks ago I went to T-Mobile store and checked their S10 phones and couldn't make voicemail or digits settings to appear. I do know that S8 and other models did have it.
No, it works perfectly fine. Make sure digits is activated and you'll get it.
You just can't get it on the unlocked U1 version.

Do you have to use the Google Voice phone number and does it cost anything?
I have a Verizon S10 but a prepaid SIM so they don't offer VVM with prepaid.
Thanks?

Nah. Essentially you just have your missed calls etc forwarded to your Google voice number. It works as a standalone voicemail service

So basically there's no free version of VVM for prepaid Verizon S10's?
Sucks to have to listen to all the voicemails just to get to the one you want to hear.
As much as I like Android it seems Android pushes people toward iPhones due to simplicity. My friends iPhone has VVM and transcribes the messages also.

My Pixel 2 have VVM built in and also transcribes the message, the sad part is the person needs to speak English for it to do it correctly
Versions of Galaxy phones on T-Mobile prior to S10, did have built in VVM. I think T-Mo will or might bring it as an update in the future
That's odd. My Pixel 2 XL didn't have VVM but I use a prepaid Verizon SIM. Same with my S-10.
As far as T-Mobile goes that's not a viable option due to the small town I live in.
I can get VVM with Verizon if I go contract but the cheapest plan is like $55.00 + tax and you have to pay an extra $3.99 and you only get 3GB of data close to $75.00. With my prepaid it's $40.00 + tax about $45.00 and 12GB of data with carry over.

It's a Verizon issue not s10/samsung/android. If you use the phone with another carrier that allows free VVM, it will work

So Verizon does not offer VVM for people who own Android phones and use Verizon prepaid SIM cards per Verizon tech.
Thing is I don't live close to any other phone carriers that work in this rural community so it's Verizon or you can go with something like Tracfone that works but I think I'll pass since their data doesn't work in this area.
Thanks for the help everyone.

I literally typed "How to set up google voice?" into Google.
Read and tried 95% of what you posted. A lot works for the unlocked version but VZW wants to lock things down to where you pay for VVM.
I don't want 2 numbers and prefer it to be accessible by using VVM within the dialer
Then you haven't read or tried ANY of what was written, because Google Voice doesn't work like that. AT ALL. It has NOTHING to do with Verizon VVM. Verizon has no control over it. You don't need or use 2 numbers UNLESS YOU WANT TO. You're just asking the same question over and over, and ignoring what everyone is telling you because YOU don't want to hear it.
Are you okay? You seem to get upset easily and there's no need in you being an ass about the question I asked.
I tried it and couldn't get it to work and if that upsets you then unsubscribe and go ***** at you're wife or husband.
There's always one in the bunch and there you are. That one.
Enjoy your day.

Will it work with Verizon? BOGO

I am totally in if this thing will run on Verizon anyone have any idea if there will be a buy one get one offer like with the Note 10?
The ROG phone 1 seems to have the bands for Verizon 4G and 3G (even though 3G will be dying at the end of the year).
https://www.findpare.com/smartphone/asus-rog-phone-8gb-512gb/mobile-carriers
They haven't annouced which bands the ROG II will support yet, unless I missed it.
Verizon uses bands 1, 2, 4, 13 and 66. It supports Bands 1, 2, 4, 13, but doesn't support 66, which is pretty much just a re-label of 4 with AWS-3, and its in very few areas. 13 is the important band, because its Verizon's mainline 4G LTE band, so apparently the ROG Phone II supports it, which is good.
Sweetness, so does that mean it will work natively with all the regular functions like text voice and data?
Moving from note 10 in a hurry...

Hopefully. People had trouble with the ROG Phone 1 when it came to Verizon compatibility, so tread lightly. I’d wait until a few people get their hands on this in the US before pulling the trigger on it.

They don't know! You are wasting your time even calling Asus and Verizon. The thing you need to understand is when you call into these call centers you are one step away from talking to a robot. Everything they tell you is from an internal website or a automated wizard they have up on the screen, and if the employee doesn't know the answer they are going to give you a best case scenario answer so you don't ***** at them and leave a bad survey. Trust me, that's how it works. Save your time and patience!
The general consensus seems to be that it has the right bands but Verizon has not approved it for their network and thus it won't work. Also no CDMA radio to fall back on should you be out of LTE range.

Put my Verizon sim in yesterday to test, got 4G+ data, called Verzion gave them the IMEI and they submitted a form for me s/b done today or tomorrow to get it up and running on their network. I WANT ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE THE PHONE AND HAVE VERIZON TO PUT THE SIM IN SLOT 2 OF THE TRAY AND POWER IT UP. You should see signal. Lol, no it won't. Without volte the phone drops to 3g...so on tmo and att, calls work, because it's gsm bands. With vz, calls would try to drop to 3g, which is CDMA on vz, so no calls. Trust me, it's not gonna work, unless we figure out volte working.

If you say so, because using a Tmobile sim right now and have that issue. Spoke to my friend an engineer at Verizon and gave him all the specs. He said as long as it registers on their network and has most of the bands it should work. You're right about the No Volte which really stinks.
I'm going to keep the phone, do you know if volte and advanced calling features work with AT&T???
