The only way I know of for you to recover your photos is if you were using Samsung Cloud to backup your device photos. You can open Samsung Cloud and restore your Gallery from inside the app. Also, if you were using Google Photos then your Camera Album may already be synced with the app.
Open the gallery app, tap on the 3 dots on the top right and then tap on settings. Then, select recycle bin and see if they are there.

[Q] Camera uses "Photos" as default viewer -- I want to use "Gallery"
I thought I would like using the new "photos" app that is provided on the Moto X. It has nice editing functions and it also uploads photos to Google for me as a backup.
However, I am not happy with it -- reviewing photos doesn't work because it makes the photos very dim, and there are other issues with it making me want to go back to Gallery as the app that the Camera will use when I review photos I've just taken.
Problem is, I can't find the "Photos" app listed in Settings -> Apps anywhere. I've checked everywhere. So I can't clear the defaults. I've even downloaded a default app settings app, and Photos doesn't show up in there, either. It says Gallery is still my default app, so I cleared that default. Still, when I take a pic and the slide to the left to review it, Photos is the app that shows my image.
Anyone have any ideas how to undo my selection of it as the default viewer app from the Camera?
Thanks!
I think the "Photos" gallery is part of Google+.
Maybe you can uninstall updates and then freeze that app to force it to reset to the gallery that is tied to the Camera app?

Settings >> Apps >> Google+ >> clear defaults.
Photos is part of google+, so you'll need to clear the defaults for all of the apps tied to it.

Hey guys, need a little help here and wanted to see if anyone else had this problem. My pictures are being saved to my microsd card. If I use quickpic for my gallery, delete a pic, it's gone from the gallery. If I restart the phone, it's back. I've tried going in through astro and deleting the files, and it just hangs, won't delete anything. I was able to go in through the camera app, then review pics through the camera app and delete from there and it worked, but I have no idea why quickpic, the stock gallery app, and astro all can't delete the pics! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And just to clarify, I'll delete a picture in quickpic, so it doesn't show up there. But if i go through astro and look in my pictures, the pics are still there, so when I restart the phone, it reloads the pics into the quickpic gallery.
Use build in file manager to delete stuff from SDCARD, google screwd everyone up by locking up sdcard functionality , the only way to fix it is by having root.

Wow, that's unbelievable, I used the built in file manager and it worked, that's ridiculous that you can't even delete pictures from the stock gallery app either. Thanks for the help!
Man, what a pain. how can this even be an issue? unbelievable!
Not true. You can delete photo's from the stock gallery. I just did it with a photo located on my external sd card.
Also, from what I understand about the external SD changes Google made, it would be mostly the application developers fault if something like that doesn't work correctly. An app can only write to it's own folder on the external SD, but can read all. When uninstalling, the applications folder is also deleted. I imagine this would be very tricky with pictures as you don't want to store them in 2 locations. I guess this would actually render a stand alone gallery app and file manager app useless in Kitkat when dealing with external SD files.
Also, it says this on Quickpic's page in the play store, "Can't modify the external storage in Kitkat." Sorry bro.
So I used the NFC tap feature to migrate the data, apps, etc from my N5 to the N6. I noticed that in Lollipop Google has done away with the gallery app in favor of the Photos app (It was a move we all know was coming). The thing is, I have never and don't like the idea of having Photos automatically backup my photos to the cloud so I have always had that feature disabled. Now, I am trying to get all my photos from the Gallery to my N6 but am not able to beam it or otherwise sync it with my google account.
Anyone else having this issue? Am i going to have to use like Airdroid or manually drag my albums from my N5 to my mac and then on to the N6?
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
If you don't want to turn on the g+ sync you are going to need to save them to your computer and then transfer back. The tap and go just transfers over settings not files.
I really dislike the Google Photos app. Google needs to realize that some people would have just like an updated Gallery app with move function. I hated it when they did the same thing with Google Music.
I use Quickpic and everything works fine.

Thanks! Makes sense, I misunderstood the quick tap capabilities.

I agree - I really like the gallery app because I feel that the Photos app sucks at organizing photos into albums and such unlike gallery. But, that could also just be due to my lack time dedicated to the photos app.
I will check out Quickpic, thanks for the suggestion!
Hi,
All of a sudden, I'm unable to access all my photos under the Gallery. I can still see they are still present when I access Files. When I take a picture with my camera, I can scroll on the previous photos under the Camera (thru the little icon on the bottom left hand corner). However when I try to access the last taken photo via Gallery, it's not there at all... I can't find any thread on the net on this problem. I hardboot the phone a couple of times but it does not work. Anyone can help on this please ?
Thanks in advance
Restart the phone.

Tried several time but to no avail.
Photos received from Whatsapp are in the gallery but not the rest
Just a general question: Do you access the camera through the locked screen with the little icon bottom right? Then you can only access the pictures you have just taken, to prevent strangers looking through your pics. If you access the camera through the icon when the display is unlocked, you should be able to see ALL your photos in the gallery.
To be more precise : Under the Gallery app, the Camera folder is completely gone with all the photos inside (videos too). When I take a photo, it does not appear anywhere in the Gallery app (maybe because there is no Camera folder)
Clear the cache/force stop the gallery app.
This happened to me but a restart fixed it.

I have this exact same problem. It happened as i was fiddling around with the "hide album" feature on a different folder. Camera folder has completely disappeared from gallery app.
[edit] [solved] i was able to go into the files app and clear cache from the options at the bottom. Camera folder appeared again. Huawei p20 pro android 8.1.0

Hi,
I tried what you suggested :
Files app - click on the 3 vertical dots and the top right hand corner - clear cache
The photos still do not appear on the Camera app. FYI my Camera app did not disappear - only the photos taken with the camera.
I had to use a 3rd party Gallery App. Just have to bear with the ads.
only problem i have after messing with hide albums is that i cant see the RAW file no more in the gallery.

Try now going to main gallery list. Select "more" with three dots and choose hidden. If camera is selected, deselect it.

Yes it worked ! All the photos and videos are back ! Thanks a lot !
How did I unwittingly hide the camera album ... Anyway I purposely attempted to hide it again but I cannot see it on the list anymore.... it does not appear all the time. I had let the phone go into standby mode and "wake it" to see the camera album reappears.
Try this
go to Settings/ Application Manager/ All/ Media Storage and then delete the cache, clear data, force stop, and then turn it off and on. After that just restart and check your gallery.
Ok guys I'm having this issue backing phone up to laptop using smart switch. On my images and videos it has a exclamation mark saying
Photo files are hidden by a photo/video locking app and will not be backed up un-hide the files before backing up
What does this mean? I've never hidden any files I would not even know how to and I do not use any locking apps? What locking app are they talking about?
Please help as I need to back the phone up
I also tried to back up my old note 4 to see what happens and the same issue happens says photo and video files are hidden by locking app.
