In the last week or so I have picked up my phone three times and it has been dead.
The power button doesn't turn it on again.
I have to take the battery out and then restart it.
I'm running a rooted 2.35 JVT.
I have nothing untoward running ...

Could it be a dead battery?
otherwise, tried to wipe and (re)flash a rom?
The battery is fine, and the ROM has been there for well over a year with no problems.
Finding the root cause of battery drain...

There are a number of standard steps to run through to find the root cause of battery problems, assuming the drain is caused by the OS or apps and not actually due to a physically failing battery.
I have been tracking a few battery issues myself recently and this is what I have learned from doing some reading on XDA:
There are two free apps on the app market that are typically used to diagnose battery problems:
Better Battery Stats
CPU Spy
I would recommend installing both apps. The third place to look is in the battery details in the system settings...sorry I can't remember what they look like on Gingerbread because upgraded to Jelly Bean a couple months ago, though I do remember there was less information in the stock battery info on Gingerbread.
IF you are not, indeed dealing with a physically dead battery, then the root of your battery drain is most likely caused by a background process or app that is keeping the processor in a partially active state even though the screen is turned off and one would assume the phone should not be using any power.
Android OS will automatically change the running speed of the processor in the phone based on the demand of the system. If only a few background tasks are running and updating information the speed might be 200 or 400 Mhz. If the system is running full out servicing a graphic intensive game the processor will likely be running at the full 1000 MHz speed. The speed of the processor will directly effect the battery drain.
The expectation is that when we turn the display off (not power down, just put the phone to sleep) the processor should need fewer resources and slow down, tending towards a state known as "Deep Sleep". At this point the processor us using very minimal amounts of power. Any app or process that is active in the background will prevent the processor from getting to Deep Sleep. The CPU spy app will allow you to check how much time the phone runs at various speeds. Once you install it and run it, then reset the timers in the menu and turn your screen off for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then 'refresh' the timers. Normally, you should see most of the time accumulated in Deep Sleep. There are standard background tasks such as syncing with the cell tower, updating time, mail, checking alarms etc. That will engage the processor momentarily but they should be relatively short compared to the deep sleep time. In my case, an errand process was keeping my phone at 100Mhz constantly preventing deep sleep.
Once you know that something is keeping the phone awake in the background, you can use Better Battery Stats to narrow down which process or app it is the cause. This app allows you to track the individual processes that are consuming the most time and preventing 'wakelocks'. Wakelocks are essentially an app preventing the sleep state and are very well explained in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827676
The battery info in the system settings can also be used to give clues though again, I can't remember how much detail was included in Gingerbread..
If your problem only started happening recently, then it could be a new app that you installed recently, a feature or setting you changed recently or possibly a recent update to an app that was already installed. Try to think back at any recent events that could have triggered a change in the system.
Common problem apps I have read about are:
- Facebook - seems to be bad at using lots of background processor time. (Don't run this app but reading several posts shows its a processor hog)
- Google Apps that sync - Gmail, Chrome (syncs browser history, tabs etc.), Google location stats.
The wakelocks link goes into a great deal of detail and is hugely valuable in nailing your issue down.
Good Luck, let use know via a post if you find the root cause...
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear about it being 'dead'.
The battery is 100% or thereabouts, no problems ever with the battery.
The phone looked as though it was turned off, but wouldn't turn on again with the power button.
I have to take the battery out and put it back again, then it starts on the button.
I've cleaned the contacts, and it still happened.
User error.

To me, it sounds more like a rogue process messing up power managing or response, but it's hard to tell what it could actually be.
For instance, you might come a cross a game that leaves your phone locked in max cpu frequency, draining the battery without explanation.
If it was me, I'd re-flash the rom from Odin, perhaps with an sd card wipe too.

did you did a factory reset after install?
Mine is draining so fast. Even when turned off. I didn't do a factory reset after install because i dont want to lose any data. My maximum charge is 11% after 3 hours. I dont even know if i can flash anything because it's lowbat.
for me is ok. the battery life is good, and i got overheathing only when i did a first start after i installed it. try to install kernel aduitor and see if all governors are on "ondemand", and if all freqs are ok.
reinstalled and did everything as it should be but stll gets hot and quickly drains out battery sometimes not always
without using battery drains to 50% in few hours
Possible Solution to Over heating after lollipop install
I had the same issue of Xperia Z1 Compact over heating after lollipop install. I backed up all my data using Sony Companion and reset my phone to factory. After that my phone is working like a champ. No more over heating and battery life last over a day and half. Hope this help.
guys,
I had the same issue and im thinking to downgrade to kitkat for real
I have tried it.. No use. It will heat up in kitkat too. Really annoying.

How old is your device? Looks like the battery is having issues. Or maybe the motherboard is supplying over current to the processor.
Its about 2 yrs old. But the heating started just after lollipop update. Before it was ok, no problem was there.
having the same issue since update to lollipop. really annoying thing. battery drained in an half hour down to 89%. that just cant be normal.. phone is not rooted or anything.
Hi,
For those who are rooted and with a custom kernel, I have faced the same problem recently and after playing a bit with CPU configuration on "Pimp My Z1" app it seemed to work again.
First thing I did was reboot the device, that way I was sure that no app I've opened was draining my battery.
Second I opened the "Pimp My Z1" app and changed the configuration of CPU to:
Maximum: 1958MHz
Minimum: 300MHz
Governor: lionheart

Also set the max clock of GPU to 320MHz.
As for the power management config, I've set this way:
Multi Core Power Saving: Aggressive.
Hotplug Driver: Intelliplug
Eco Mode: On
Power Suspend: On

Today I'm with 82% battery but with 59 minutes of screen on time (~70% brightness) and some more of music playing. Also using Stamina Mode. Heats a bit, but doesn't show any draining symptom.
If you still face overheating problems, I suggest downloading the Greenify app and hibernating many apps. That worked for me on S4 when it was with a similar problem.

Worked for me
I have the LG Leon for MPCS w/ 5.0.2 root-TWRP. I began experiencing this after flashing a sound engine mod. I also noticed my charging port pin was bent slightly. Another possibility was changing CPU gov-I/O-min. freq.
I flashed mod remove zip, then restored from Nandroid prior to, and fixed pin. Still had it.
BUT: I kept my phone on top of my AC unit vent for roughly 13 hours while it was on & plugged in, set brightness to night mode, 15 sec time out, and disabled daydream.
PROBLEM GONE.
Also set CPU back to reg. settings.
CPU has been steady 28-30 deg. C all day.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys, long time since I've been on here.
I have a S4 i9500, and I was having mega drainage issues. I installed Novalaunch, and disabled the samsung touchwiz crap - battery usage is SOO much better already. I have had lollipop for a few months now, and I did factory reset it, twice, and install all the apps manually via google play. It got so bad, that i HAD to run my phone with power save on ALL THE TIME, and even then, it would be pretty hungry. the other day, I ran it on full power(1.6ghz) and it chewed 40% in around 1 hour. All I was doing was had Pandora music on.
I have a tool called 'Cool Tools', and I monitored the IO activity bfore, and it show pretty high utilization all the time, even with the screen off. With Novalauncher, its hitting rock bottom(low), even while using it..
Its soo good now, to give you an idea - I charged my phone last night(around 9pm), and restarted it and unplugged the charger. I ran it on full power(power save OFF), over night, with data on, and it only chewed 15%. MASSIVE difference. I'm at 60% now, and I've been running Pandora for at least 3 hours now, and using some other apps as well. Its been 14 hours or so already.

Even I faced fast battery drain with Touchwiz launcher.
Now running custom ROM and seeing that CPU usage is lesser and battery stays longer.
However, nothing can beat Kitkat's battery usage. Lollipop, according to me, is a battery killer wrapped in material design for disguise.
Xperia z1 battery drain issue or problem
I FOUND THE MAIN CULPRIT FOR BATTETY DRAIN AFTER 5.1.1 LOLLIPOP UPDATE. Its the overheat control app. As you all may know that after first update from jellybean 4.2 to kitkat 4.4, the phone tends to get overheated while multitasking. Thus overheat control app eats up the battery and drain it when the phone starts getting hot.
I REQUEST ALL THE DEVELOPERS TO CHECK IT AND PROVE IF I M WRONG.
I m sure that Google will find the answer to the battery drain issue fix in overheat control app.

Hi Team,
I recently switched to a Nexus 6 from a Note 4 (could not stand TW anymore). So far liking the Nexus`s smooth operation. However i have some questions
1-) The phone runs Hot even in day to day normal operation. And its even hotter when running some intensive tasks . Also the phone gets quite hot when charging (even from a non Fast charger)
2-) I was able to get 4.28 Hours of SOT on everything stock ( 5.1 ). Its lower then Note 4 , but i am fine with it . Just wanted to ask if its normal SOT ?
3-) I read that the stock kernel on the N6 is quite bad. Should flashing a good custom Rom / kernel resolve the issue of phone running hot ?

I'm stock and the only time my phone gets warm is when it's on turbo charging from a low battery. I average 5 to 6 hours SOT but that is very user specific. I keep location set to low battery use and my brightness is set at about 40% with ambient display turned on. You should look into a wakelock detector and see if you have a specific app that is causing battery drain or high CPU usage. FWIW, Facebook app is a number one culprit.
Thanks man for the reply. Those are some impressive numbers.
I already have location services off since i don`t have any use for them. I have my brightness to around 30% / ambient display is turned off.
Regarding facebook , i just read that FB messenger is a big culprit. Hence i just uninstalled it. Also installed GSAM battery monitor to check for wakelocks.
Anyone else have any feedback. The mfgr date on my phone is 10th January 2015

1. hot.. whats your cpu temp? your phone can run up to 100C, or 212F, before it hits its safety shutdown, when itll shutdown to cool off. if you are just saying it feels hot, thent dont. feel doesnt give you any temp, it just days it feels hot compared to your hand.
2. its normal. i see anywhere from 5-6.5 hours sot. but thats according to how i use the phone and my signal quality.
3. no. they have nothing to do with your devices temperature.
I notice that mine feels hot when its been sitting in the sun.
Hi everyone,
I have recently gone back to my touchpad mainly for multimedia usage. Mainly youtube and kodi. I do however have some really high battery usage which I would like to try and understand. I keep the screen at around 50% brightness.
I am running the latest CM11 KitKat rom by jsullins..
I'm getting all these figures by using Cool Tools.
* While in sleep it seems to be draining at -11mA
* Homescreen with nothing running it's draining at -799mA
* Streaming a movie from my pc with Kodi it drains at -1207mA
Does this seem normal?
Battery Drain
Most of us are using 3C's Battery Monitor.
11 while sleeping is not that much above 7 or 8.
Something is definitly running when your screen is on.
Use Touchpad Toolbox to reflash yoour A6. (I now have it permanently on the Touchpad and accessable on the boot up menue.
Battery Drains off @ 55%
Hello Experts,
Another qn on touchpad battery issues. I'm seeing some strange behavior with regards to my touchpad's charging & discharging capabilities . I notice it charging steadily to 40% and shortly thereafter it spikes up to 100% ( verified from a battery monitor app) . Likewise while discharging , I see a gradual decline to around 55-60% and thereafter the device just powers off abruptly citing 0% battery
I see the same behavior on both CM for Android 4.4 & Android 5.x .I have also reflashed the A6 firmware via the toolbox but still no improvement. Can anyone kindly advise as to what I could do to address this issue?
I have done a lot of research via google search and looked through xda forums but haven't found anyone report this sort of a defect.
I would appreciate if you could provide some feedback assuming you have seen this issue or guide me to an appropriate forum where this issue was fixed?
I had a battery drain for a long time on my Nexus 5. Device was awesome when I bought it, but after upgrading to Lollipop I started to get strange battery drain problem which reason cannot be found easily, it's nothing in Settings->Battery on graph - no apps using battery, but it goes from 100 to 0% in about 7 hours. Even if I dont use it at all, battery discharges very fast.
I tried different ROM versions and found that battery life is soo much better on 4.4.2. I found that 4.4.2 has baseband v 1.0, and starting from 4.4.3 it was upgraded to 2.0.
So I solved it by downgrading baseband to 1.0. I found that very likely that any baseband works with any ROM, so I flashed latest 6.0.1 system, then flashed radio from 4.4.2. fastboot, unlocked bootloader. I think to make it work reliably, don't make it boot first time after flash, hold power button, and Volume down, it reboots to bootloader. Then do factory reset and reboot. In my case radio is recognised and works.
Now I have latest stock ROM and radio from 4.4.2, and battery life in standby is so much better. I tried to replace battery 2 times, but battery was actually OK. For those who have similar problem u should try it. Google made a great device, still fast and works very good, but they or Qualcomm maybe ****ed up things in modem firmware since version 2.0. Probably not everyone is affected but for me difference is huge, its like normal device with reasonable battery life, but becomes junk after software update. I will think twice before I'll buy something more from Google. Why I must to support device myself, if I found how to fix this why they still not released proper fix? Probably Google doesn't care about product quality after several months.
surely, is an experiment to try .also if , the battery drain problem I'm suffering, like many, more when the screen is on.
during screen off the battery falls but little, turned on the screen, also even if you do nothing and just read [low light, dark menu through substratum, dark backgrounds, cpu and gpu limited kernel with blue spark powersave settings, night vision in browser] decreases the battery 1 % every 2 minutes, something noted by many and to me with various Roms [octOS mm e n, purenexus 6 and 7, stock] .
this is for me the "great mystery" of this device
