Tab S2 - An error has occurred while updating + bootlooping - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found a SM-T813 for sale and it has the following error message: "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software." The person selling it also states that whenever he plugs it into his computer it isn't recognized and reboots after 5 seconds.
This is what he states: Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 SM-T813 32GB, Wi-Fi, 9.7"
Needs Android Re-installed
PROBLEM: doesn't boot. When I connect it to my computer, I get the following message: "an error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch pc software." And it keeps re-booting. Hopefully you can reinstall Android. Sold As-IS for repair!
I asked him the following questions and these are his responses:
Have attempted to reinstall Android?
- Yes, I've tried holding down the volume button to download mode, and I've tried connecting to my laptop, but it keeps rebooting.
What did you try when you connected it to your computer?
- Nothing, my laptop won't recognize it. The tablet will connect for five seconds then disconnect. The cycle repeats.
So you've tried the Smart Switch PC software that it mentions with no success? Does the tablet automatically reboot itself after being plugged into your computer after the 5 seconds you mentioned?
- Yes and yes
Does it seem like this is fixable? I've read quite a bit online, but it seems like it is one problem or the other, I haven't found anything with both problems. For the bootlooping it sounds like it may be a physical defect, in which case I'm not really interested in it, but I'm not sure if it is.
Can anyone help? It's for sale for about half the price of any other used S2 10" I could find.
Thanks!

Sounds like a bricked paperweight to me. But if you are intested in scavenging go for it, I'd say.

Simply appears to me like user error. If it's not charged it will reboot.
Also to boot download mode the right button combo has to be held regardless of whether it's boot looping or not. Seems to me he's not using the right button combo.
If you can get to download mode it's likely fixable.

Same problem...
I'm having the same problem with my tablet. So far as I know, there's really two different problems here:
1) There was the issue with the firmware, that could be taken care of with the Samsung Smart Switch, and
2) The device is out of battery, but because of issue number one, whenever the tablet has enough juice to do so, it turns the screen on at full brightness to tell that it is in such a condition, thus draining any battery that had just been charged into the device.
I still haven't figured out how to get it to charge, and that's really the main problem right now, is figuring out how to get it to charge either faster than the screen drains the battery, or without the screen turning on in the first place. The only solutions I could think of for that, is to open it up, and put a fully charged battery in (thus voiding the warranty, if there is one, but in your case probably not), or maybe (I haven't tried this yet, so I don't know if this would even work or not) opening up the tablet, and disconnecting the screen while the tablet charges, then reconnecting it in a few hours, after the tablet has stored up some juice. The second option would save the costs of buying a new battery, and its not even certain that the battery would have enough in it to go through the process either, but it is a lot more experimental, and I have no idea if it would even work without breaking the device.
Those are just two ideas I came up with, so if anyone else has a better idea of how to fix it without sending it to a shop, or opening it up, please tell. And just a warning, I've done some phone repair jobs in the past, but I don't work with repairing phones on a regular basis, so don't take me as an expert on this. If you choose to use one of the above methods, do it at your own risk, and make sure you study up on how to do it, or take it to a shop to have professionals do it.

Just boot it to DOWNLOAD mode or RECOVERY mode.
Also if your tablet cannot charge even at full brightness then there's either an issue with the battery or more likely the charger.
When the tablet is plugged into the mains the tablet should run indefinitely and charge at the same time if it's a 2amp charger.

[Q] Possible brick during rooting?

Hey all, thanks for taking your time to read and possibly help me out with my problem. Yesterday I've tried rooting my droid in order to put cyanogen mod on it later. The reason I was interested in doing that was because I felt as droid was not working to it full potential and constantly crashing apps on me (browser, games, weather, etc). A friend of mine suggested cyanogen as he himself owns it. Being that I've did plenty of CFW on PS2, psp, xbox and mp3s/ipods, I thought there shouldn't be a hassle with this.
I followed the procedures listed on cyanogen's wiki page in order to complete the rooting process. But on the step where it asked to instal .sbf file trough RSD lite and wait till it says "pass" I've ran into trouble.
During the unpacking of that file to the phone using RSD lite the phone was undergoing several reboots, and after finally finishing the reboots on my PC screen in the RSD Lite window it showed 100% complete "please reboot the phone manually". I had no idea how to do that manually as the phone just kept going on and off by itself. (also for some reason it kept saying "error" force close/wait/send notice. But I thought it was probably just the process. After trying to reboot the phone a couple of times nothing worked. I didn't receive any "pass" signs on the droid screen.
I've got a little worried about the whole process and decided to shut the phone off and during that close the RSD Lite on my computer. Doing that made no further improvements for me. The phone just kept going on and off like crazy while in USB and not turning on at all while not plugged into either USB or AC. I've decided to go to recovery mode and just reset everything to stock as I was running out of time and had to get some sleep before work next day. After reseting the cache/data files I rebooted the phone but the same things kept happening to it. Now it was asking me to reconnect with gmail account and all that intro stuff. But the phone would always end up locking up and shutting off somewhere in the process of reconnecting the account.
Fast forward to today I've read that its possible to complete reset everything to stock version trough .sbf file once again. But now the problem consists of the phone not having enough batter life. (I'm not sure what the screen is called where the process of dumping .sbf trough RSD lite starts) but that screen keeps saying battery is too low to do anything with it. And mind me it has been charge for a very long time now in the AC adapter.
Now it also appears as the problem has worsened. The phone does not start up at all in either USB or without connection. It only starts up in AC adapter but then it shuts off in 2 minutes and back on and off , on and off. Recovery mode can't be accessed in any way, at least any way known to me. The black .sbf screen can only be accessed while the phone is not connected to anything but still keeps saying the battery is too low. And I've noticed the phone getting extremely hot during AC charge. (another small detail that sometimes when the phone does turn on and goes to home screen opening up the landscape view does not increase the length of the top (pull down) bar in horizontal view.
I've tried taking out both battery and sdcard and putting them back but no luck. I'm really lost as to what I can do next in order to fix this problem.
If you need any further information please let me know and thank you again for trying to help me!
I don't really see how you managed to get a fc with rsdlite.
Did you reboot your phone (turn off) then boot into usb recovery (power on while holding up, for the droid)?
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
I am by no means an expert and could be just wasting your time but in the absence of expert opinions something is better than nothing right? It sounds to me like maybe you have a bad battery that as luck would have it failed during the update/rewrite. Have you tried getting into recovery with the battery pulled running straight off the ac adapter? Hopefully you made a clockwork/nandroid backup before you started?
sent from a random hobo's droid on xda's app
I'm not an expert either, but having just successfully rooted my droid and installed cyanogen I feel the need to ask: did you hold up on the d-pad while RSD rebooted the phone the first time? If not then you needed to immediately restart the process.
I think you need to use a separate battery charger (meaning that charging battery without a phone) to charge the battery.
Sometimes, battery won't hold a charge when your phone is a brick.
BTW, it appears that you are having the same issue with mine.
(I can't post a URL because I am new here, but you can take a look at my article in this section, called "[S.O.S] A rare MILESTONE brick situation". )
I had the same problem (battery won't charge and phone won't start-up), I had to purchase a separate battery charger, and then flashed another SBF, to make the phone charging normal. (Although my phone is still a brick, but not a problem with battery. )

[Q] Battery Icon With Question Mark - Hardware or Software?

Hi All,
I have a Touchpad that is showing a battery icon with a question mark after trying to charge for an hour or so. I have searched the net and found lots of different supposed solutions for it and none have worked. I am still not quite certain whether it is software or hardware related.
It has stock WebOS installed, not hacked with kernel/OC'd or Android. I have attempted these fixes with no change in status:
Tried several different cords to charge,
Tried charging for 1.5 days or so,
Tried twisting/untwisting/twisting charger head,
Tried charging with PC and Laptop main USB ports (no hub),
Checked charger voltage with multimeter and it is +5 V,
I have also attempted to put it into USB mode and no USB icon will appear on screen. Here is exactly what happens:
I hold power + center button till reboot, then quickly hold power + Vol up. Screen goes black (never see USB symbol). Try plugging into computer and the computer attempts to install drivers for Palm device, but does not succeed. I have Web Doctor and Novacomd installed (along with necessary Java, Eclipse, etc.). I cannot connect the computer to the Touchpad to attempt a WebOS re-install.
I can also perform the above with Power + Vol Down which results in a different USB mode which some have said is a Qualcom development mode, however I cannot get those drivers installed properly to communicate with the device either.
Power + Center button on bottom results in reboot shortly followed by battery icon.
Center button LED's alternate white back and forth when charging up to a certain point, then the dreaded battery question mark reappears
There seems to be many different opinions out there as to what the actual problem is - some say it is hardware related, some say software related. Some solutions that are offered are for phones, and as such offer solutions like getting a new battery or pulling the battery, which is not an option for the Touchpad.
Anyone else have any other real solutions other than sending back to HP for a new one? At this point I am not sure I can even get a new one if the inventory levels have been depleted.
I've got the exact same problem with a 32GB Touchpad. Any lucking getting it to work?
Had the same problem out of the box - Had to warranty it (twice) to get it fixed. Actually got it to work for 10 min by completely draining the battery then the charging symbol came on.Charged it for 4 hrs - started to set it up and it died. I think they replaced the battery (2nd time )because It had the smaller one before and now its the larger. I'm glad they fixed mine instead of a refurb because it has none of the fit or crack problems.
Definately warranty, bad battery. I had one after a week!
No luck - but honestly I haven't tried anything else lately. I have been working away from home and haven't had a chance to mess with anything. I have not seen any additional steps to try attempting a fix. No one else has offered any additional suggestions of things to try and I think that a return may be the only way to fix the issue.
Started getting the icon last night. Called HP and they asked me to return it for repair.
They barely did any troubleshooting, so I'm guessing they know what the problem is. I've seen multiple references to bad batteries in other forums, so my assumption is they will replace it.
I will lose the device for a few weeks. Hopefully this is a one-time thing.
Hi, I am buying one with said issues that I wanted to ask you if you have any further advice on how to fix this issue? This is not stock. Plus no warranty.. Any suggestions are appreciated..

[Q] [PLEASE HELP] HTC One M7 not charging when on.

Device: HTC One (M7) Stock ROM
A few days ago, my never rooted, stock firmware, no unlocked boot loader, no custom ROM, never dropped HTC One (M7)'s battery died. Plugging in the charger had no effect, absolutely NOTHING. Tried 6 different cables and 9 different locations to charge it, nothing. Waited a while, dying in desperation. Then after so much of panic, I plugged it again, and randomly it started charging. But the charging had a loop - showed a bright orange LED with the power symbol on a battery for about 5 seconds, then a dim orange LED with the green battery charging, and a number, for about 10 seconds. The loop kept repeating. Eventually I could turn it on till the (incredibly low capacity) battery could live. So I did about 10 resets to it, and the situation would not improve.
Since my phone just decided to do this to me just before a long journey of mine, I was quite upset, and eventually infuriated to the limits. I decided to take it along and try different things to it - tried, tried, cleaned the ports, searched the net, nothing.
One fine day it decided to break the loop - now it charged, but only when off.
And today again its started the loop.
And here I am, begging for some help. I'm starting to hate this device now. Please help me.. :crying:
P.S. : I played a lot of Clash of Clans on the phone - it heated up a lot. Hope the info helps (Possible corrupted overheating charge instructions of the phone, etc.)
please help i love this phone cant lose this at all

I have to drain the whole battery to charge it again. and its in that loop that you mentioned. plus it does not charge when you put it on charge when its on. it doesnt even have that charging light. it only charges itself if its off and if there is no battery left, i have to put it on charge by draining the whole battery by using apps and stuff and i am so pissed right now i cant find a solution to this. Did you find a solution on how to get this fixed?
I am currently having a similar problem where I can only charge my phone if off. Hopefully someone can help!

I have found a solution to this. I am really happy since i am able to use my phone again.
Let me state what exactly i was going through.
I had to use the phone till it actually turned off completely consuming the whole battery and it was very frustrating because i had to deliberately use the phone till the phone shuts down and charge it. And once it started charging, it has a weird stupid way of charging. It shows that its charging and it goes off, comes back on and shows its charging, then it goes off... When it goes off the red light goes away...then comes back on.
I've read other threads and forums about people having the same issue. Others say they're not even able to connect their phones to the computer. You all should try connecting your phone to a computer and check if its able to transfer data.
If that happens, then you're saved. Because this really worked out for me.
Now, i'm not really sure what kind of bug this is, but here's how you fix this.
If you're able to transfer data to your phone, you must browse your phone on the computer and copy a file (or a couple of files - in my case i transferred a movie folder that had a couple files in it)
And guess what..i put it on charge and started charging like normal oh my god i was happy as hell
Thanks. I hope the same works for you all, people have been saying you have to clean the charging port but not really

I'm not sure how are you NOT able to get it connected to your computer. Since i connected it to the computer, it didn't start charging but it allowed me to transfer files. And so i did. You might wanna change the cable and check if its letting you connect to your PC.
So far its working perfectly alright. I don't have a problem as such. And wait, you could install a file manager and move a couple files around. Maybe delete some files or download some files and try.
I Hope it works for everyone who's getting this problem. I know its not a hardware problem and HTC support sucks BIG time. i don't even have htc headquarters so i couldn't get it replaced, bad. but if your phone is under warranty you must get it replaced

Hi! so you are saying that if i move some files from the computer to the phone it might get fixed? Well, i cant plug it to the computer, it just doesnt recognize the phone, if i plug it when the phone is on the pc doesnt show anything and the phone doesnt charge or anything, just like when trying to charge it with the ac charger, if i plug it with to the pc with the phone off then it shows a message that doesnt recognize the device, and the phone doesnt even charge aswell...
Right now the only fix i have found is to solve the problem of having to drain the battery in order to charge the phone, now i fixed it unticking the fastboot option in energy, now i can charge with any % but the phone must be off. Btw it gets a lot of heat while charging it this way... idk if its normal, i heard that because the aliminium case it gets more heat than normal plastic cases.
Thanks for your reply, ill try to connect the phone to the pc a few more times.
Hello guys , , I have the same problem , charging the M7 (On stock rom), I have tried many things ,roms and kernels , currently I managed to make it charge with the screen on with some conditions..
I installed SLIM ROM from their site (4.4.4) . To charge the phone with screen on I have to check "screen on while charging" (because if the screen goes off it stops charging /same thing if somebody is calling me )
To Charge my phone I just need to Reboot normally and charge it ( if you install this rom Activate the sound for the ac plug/unplug so you can know if it is charging well or not )
Eaven if i have to do these things its better then the OFF mode .
Hope It helps .
HTC M7 Only charges when it's off and the laptop can't recognize the device.
Hello, I've had this HTC M7 since last year. It's worked perfectly until a couple days ago.
The phone will not charge when it's on. It only charges when it's off. Also, my laptop won't recognize the device. I've tried with a couple different AC chargers, but no luck.
Sometimes my phone says "CAN'T CHARGE WHILE IN USB HOST MODE," and I don't know how to take it out of USB Host mode? I'm guessing this is a problem with the software. Before this happened the phone worked flawlessly.
Any help, please??!!

It can sometimes be caused by a defective usb port on the phone, does your port looks damaged? Boot your phone in safe mode and check if its doing the same thing.
I've already done that and it doesn't work.
I really don't know what the issue is? I mean this is a perfectly working unlocked HTC M7.
I've turned if off multiple times and even wiped it clean twice. I don't know what else it could be.
I mean it's been working perfectly since I got it.
But as I mentioned earlier it will only charge while the phone is off. And my laptop can't recognized it either.
It only appears and "Unknown Device."
But even when it is off it charges for a bit and then it completely stops.
Then you see the battery logo and then it starts charging again. But it repeat that same process throughout the whole time. So, it can never reach to 100%.
As I've mentioned before I've never really had this problem.
I've been looking for hours on the internet and so far nothing seems to work. There was an app I saw on to access engineer mode or something, but for some reason I can't use that app because it says that I'm missing another application.
Any thoughts??

I have the same problem, it can't charge, PC don't recognize when the phone is on android, but when i boot into recovery everything work fine (charge or data move to PC), so far i could't find any way better.
Hi,
had same problem.
Clearing system cache helped in my case.
Related cause for the trouble seem to be a couple of OTA upgrades I did recently.
(I was on a pretty old version.)
I noticed that there was something wrong while upgrading.
Even though the phone was connected to the charger while the whole upgrade process,
battery level went down...
The following procedure is your own risk!
Be careful not to choose any options that wipe all your data or factory reset your device.
This is how I cleared the system cache :
Boot into recovery (hold both volume-down and power buttons for ~30 seconds until menu shows - )
Press volume-down to choose RECOVERY and press power button.
Be patient ~60 seconds until menu appears.
Choose wipe cache partition and press power button.
Choose reboot system and press power button.
I hope this helps you.
Thanks

N7000 spontaneously died

Hi all,
I hope somebody can point to some tests I can perform to determine what's wrong with my N7000.
Last night, my N7000 (flashed with NightOwl CM12 beta9 software) was just standing by, in normal operation mode (i.e. not during reflashing or anything of the sort), hooked up to my PC with a USB cable. I was busy with other stuff, so I was not interacting with the phone in any way.
As I was minding my business, I suddenly noticed the phone was displaying its boot screen ("Samsung Galaxy Note N7000" etc), but it remained in this screen, without actually booting. I tried a few times to take the battery out and in, then to power it up again, but it never advanced beyond the boot screen, and after a few such attempts, it is no longer showing any screen of any kind.
I'm an electronics engineer, so I'm comfortable with dealing with low-level hardware. Is there any advice, or anything I can do to analyze and/or rectify the problem with the phone?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't seem like I'm having a battery issue. I tried with two different batteries, both of them seem to be OK (I measured about 4.2V on both, with no load).
As I tried to explain in my original post, right now the screen doesn't even seem to turn on. I tried getting into download mode without the visual indications, but my PC doesn't detect a connected device. How can I reflash in such a state?

As I tried to explain in my original post, right now the screen doesn't even seem to turn on. I tried getting into download mode without the visual indications, but my PC doesn't detect a connected device. How can I reflash in such a state?

Can't help you there, originally I thought it was due to low battery juice so a charge and reflash would work. Sounds like it's been bricked though.

Hi all,
I hope somebody can point to some tests I can perform to determine what's wrong with my N7000.

Buy a new battery (or use one that you know is changed) (can buy a fong kong aswell). Seems you run out of juice and there is no kernel to let it charge.

As I already wrote above, the batteries are fine. They are charged and their voltage is sufficiently high, with and without load.

Pull out battery, wait 1 minute and try again, if the display doesn't turn on i though it's an hw problem
You could try to take battery out, plug the micro-usb cable in the phone and the charger to the power outlet(not your pc or laptop) and see if it does anything. If it doesn't, try to power it on from the power button.
If it still doesn't do anything, with the battery out, plug the micro-usb in the phone, hold volume down, and, while holding, plug the other end of the usb into your computer and see if it displays anything(the computer or the phone, or both).
Still nothing? You might want to try to take it to a cellphone service in your area and ask them to try a JTAG reflash.

Thanks for your reply, but as I wrote in my OP, I was hoping for a more technical advice than "connect usb and see if something is being displayed".
I don't have the necessary equipment for a JTAG connection, so this procedure would cost me, and I'd like to do some differential diagnosis before asking to have it done. What I'm suspecting is EMMC failure (in which case, JTAG alone won't be enough, and my data is also lost), but I don't know how to test for it - my equipment is limited to an oscilloscope, a multimeter and a soldering iron.
I've done some low-level measurements of the device, it seems the 32,768Hz and 24MHz oscillators are OK, and some good voltage readings inside the circuit suggest the power management IC is probably OK as well.
I'm reading close to zero current when battery is first attached to the device, and around 280mA when I attempt to turn on the device with the power button - but no boot screen.
To sum up: how can I determine if the EMMC is fried, or a simple resurrection via JTAG could revive the device?

Mi 8 Phone will not turn on at all, no charge - LineageOS 17.1

Essentially, been using LineageOS ROMs since I got this phone two years ago, everything had been working just fine and generally happy with this phone.
The story starts that I had just charged my phone overnight, had woken up, unplugged it and was looking at my notifications.
Opened a WhatsApp notification, instantly the launcher seemed to crash and was unresponsive, although the notification tray was functioning still. Tried to turn off the phone via the power menu, device did not shutdown. Forced power off on the phone, phone turned off.
Immediately I was unable to turn the phone back on. Tried recovery, fastboot boot methods and the device would not turn on at all. The screen is black and the device not responding to anything power related button combinations. When I plug the device into power, no charging light appears on the phone, the screen doesn't turn on at all with the typical charging animation when it's in the off state. When I plug the device into my Ubuntu machine, no USB device is detected by the kernel - as though nothing is plugged in at all. When I plugged it into my battery pack however, it did appear that it detected a device and flashed it's LED as though it was charging a device that was plugged into it.
I had not wet the device, or *recently* dropped it. It lives in a pretty reasonable case and has stood the couple years of my use with essentially no scratches other than some very minor abrasions on the screen.
I have a little phone electronics tool kit and a hair dryer, and as the battery was fully charged before this had occurred, I decided to pull the phone apart and disconnect the battery from the mainboard behind the NFC assembly. I also tried disconnecting the power charging circuitry in case something was shorting in that area - still nothing. Left the device with the battery unplugged from the mainboard for 5 days, and just tried it again - still no dice.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the cause might be. At this stage, I'm suspecting a mainboard failure, in which case data recovery seems unlikely. I have had over two years out of the device, it's far from the end of the world. I'm reluctant to spend any money trying to repair it particularly if it's the mainboard, I'll lose my data anyway. If I were able to retrieve the data from the device that would be of some benefit to me, about a weeks worth of photos and some chat history with my GF; so some questions I have:
1. Should I be able to power on the device with a USB C cable plugged in but the battery unplugged?
2. Apart from what happened above, does anyone have any suggestions about the cause remembering that it doesn't turn on into any boot mode at all?
Do you have any windows device?

No I don't sorry. I also bought a new battery for the Mi 8, the device still didn't turn on or charge. I think I can safely say the phone is cactus.

Did you solved the problem?
