Hi there. I'm on a unlocked bootloader and rooted x Performance with supersu. I want to change it with magisk, cause i nerd to hide Root to ps4 remote play app. The only thing to do IS choose to change superuser app in supersu app, and THEN install magisk, right? Or i have to flash something, change something, brick something to install it?
Thanks!
The best method is to flash a clean rom on your phone using flashtool, and install magisk (v13) directly from TWRP after booting up your phone for the first time.
Ok, right. And What if i want to full unroot Phone? I want also relock bootloader, it's possibile? I don't use Root anymore, i've installed it only for uninstall System apps...
If you have already backuped your TA before unlocking your bootloader, go here
,follow shoey63's step, and restore your phone with Xperia Companion at last(may fail few times), then everything will be like it should be before.
BUT, if you didn't backup your TA before you unlock your bootloader
.
.
.
Honestly speaking, if you didn't back up your TA when you unlock your bootloader, then there's no use to relock your bootloader now since that some features of this phone is gone permanently, and I'm not sure whether things like Android Pay or Pokémon Go will work even if you relock it.
However if you still want to, just google it and you can find lots of tutorials there.
---------- Post added at 06:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:58 PM ----------
I just saw your previous posts in XDA, and I guess that you didn't backup your TA, do you?
If you indeed didn't, but you still want to have most of the features back, just ask and we can help.
If you did, then congrats, say bye-bye to xda and enjoy your normal phone.

So, I got my Moto X on Verizon today. The OTA started downloading already. Luckily, I turned off all data before it could finish downloading (it's at 8% now). Obviously, I can't connect to data 'cause it will automatically start to download.
I want to root though. I know I'm supposed to use PwnMyMoto. However, I know that the OTA breaks root. I've read around all the posts--and I can't seem to find a conclusive way to keep root on the OTA after gaining it; each post I read says something different.
Additional piece of info: I don't care about anything regarding custom ROMs or the bootloader. I intend to keep the stock ROM, but use Xposed.
So, my three questions:
1) Is it okay to root even though the download of the OTA has started?
2) What is the conclusive way to keep root for the OTA?
3) After rooting, how would I go about returning everything back to stock? (I plan on using this phone for a next week or so, then returning it--this is because of the price drops and MotoMaker for Verizon coming out soon; at this stage, I just want to know if this phone is right for me).
Thanks for all the help in advance.
Just boot into Recovery and wipe data\cache and dalvick this will reset your phone. Then resetup your phone, the OTA will come back up, tell the OTA to REMIND you about it, not download it. Then use pwnmymoto to get root, and then just freeze the OTA downloader (MotorolaOTA.apk). Continue to use your phone, customize it with xposed etc etc. When you want to return it, use RSDLite and flash the stock FXZ file to it its totally back to stock again out of the box.
Am I too late?
I have the update on my phone, but would want to root it. I have the moto x on verizon it's not the developers edition.
No need to wipe data. You can root while the download goes then install ROM toolbox and delete the update from your cache and freeze the moto updater.apk and updater.apk to stop the notification. As for.rooting the update I think jcase said install pwnmymoto but don't run it then update. But IMO its not worth it cause if anything gets messed up you get updated and loose the opportunity to root.

If you installed the update your SOL. If its just downloaded your OK to root.
I ended up not accepting the update. I'm not going to either. If by the time I return this phone I deem it worthy of a replacement for my GNexus--then I'll worry about root and the OTA. This is awesome stuff.

Had a feeling oh well missed the boat again.
As you know there are not many kernel options for ZR as in Z you have to unlock bootloader to root the phone to flash it with CWM or any other recovery.
So this is detailed Guide to root Xperia ZR & having Locked Bootloader
1) Don't upgrade your phone to 4.2.2_10.3.1.A.2.67 Firmware & If you already updated it to Downgrade it to 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 Firmware In Flash mode Using Flashtool 9.13 (Download Flashtool 9.11 install it After upgrade it with 9.12 & 9.13) don't unlock bootloader.
2)Now Root it Using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit. to root just click runme.bat. Your phone will get root access & you will get Superuser app
3)Then use Backup-TA-9.8 to backup your TA.img & save it at any Safe location for further Use ( It Content DRM Data & must be saved throughout lifespan of your phone).
4)Now upgrade your phone to 10.3.1.A.2.67 either by OTA or Using Sony PC companion & if you are unable to get upgrade don't panic just use flashtool & flash the 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 again & try the OTA upgrade. (As i do have both for Indian region but attachments will be too big to Attach here).
5)Now install Vroot on your PC & root your phone with it. Now you can see that your bootloader got unlocked but don't panic install SuperSu from Playstore update binary for it reboot your phone. now freeze Superuser from Vroot using titanium backup then update binary for SuperSu. Now convert Superuser from Vroot into user app using Titanium Backup. Reboot Your phone update binary for SuperSu & uninstall superuser from Vroot.
6)Now Use BLU button From Flashtool. on pressing BLU button Flashtool it will prompt to start phone in flash mode to unlock bootloader just do as prompted but dont disconnect the phone after boot loader just hit the BLU button to re-lock bootloader. Reboot your phone.
7)Now just flash Back-up your TA Using Backup-TA-9.8.
8)Congratulation now you have rooted phone with locked bootloader with full functionality.
I wrote this because i just lost DRM data things cant be undone.
SO for all Niewbies this is guide to ROOT ZR with Locked BootLoader.

there are a LOT of exact same guides floating around for MONTHS already. why do u feel u need to make a new one?
also, where are your credits and permissions to share other ppls' work here?
and also, there are those easy 1-click solutions available for MONTHS already and most ppl use that now instead of this complicated method which is outdated and troublesome...
oh one more thing after i read thru it again...

OK i agree there are there are many guide for rooting but all are applicable to Z or Zl having many kernel options. not as Zr which has very few kernel option.
Try any Method except vroot on Zr & tell me which are more useful.
Even vroot unlocks bootloader so to get root with 4.1 without unlocking bootloader is precautionary because accidental wipe of Ta partition may void Warranty.
This is not for pro who can build kernel for those who knew very less about android, to avoid them all pain i suffered.
& again i joined this forum 4 days ago as you think but i used this subscribed it 4 years ago with my first X10 & used it Since then anonymously as i lost my password for cant retrieve it.
& Tell me What is inaccurate i will try it Myself.
If you think its ridiculous why you haven't posted how to Root Zr it would have saved me a lot of pain.
So as you done nothing before stay as you are at least i m trying to save pain of others.

DRM data is Digital Rigths Management Data which links purchased data to your phone without which you cant use data u purchased. More Important without which warranty voids, Bravia Engine seizes to work properly as it works with DRM Data. & Track Id downloaded from Market will not integrate with walkman which are Sony proprietary software's.

hmm... i don't get any sort of crap from that software on my PC... maybe cos i was smart enough not to just blindly click Next all the way. IE/reg/security settings are all fine (part of my job is IT security so i know when weird things come into my PC)
as for the screenshot of the superuser app "dialing home", well one of the first few things i did was to replace it with SuperSU...
what..?? I've never seen a rooting procedure which unlocks the BL... and that last one absolutely doesn't need to be unlocked for rooting ! Honestly, I've serious doubts about your intentions. Why the hell do you tell upgrading, flashing, flashing back and blabla... this is too complicated.
Get vroot or kingo root, that's all you need

Yes, this can also root from COMPLETE stock without the need of a computer of any kind. May want to add that to thread title if possible to let others know it can be used to root LMY48B(At Least) without the need of a computer to unlock bootloader first and without the need of a custom recovery first. Just install Kingroot then use KingUser(I Believe That Is The Super User App It Installs, Do NOT Install Another SuperUser App Yet Until After Custom Recovery Installed) and use KingUser to allow custom recovery App permissions to install recovery then use that recovery to install SuperUser binaries properly.

He just said why on the first post...lol
So you dont need a pc
Its just an easier method if you ask me and for unlocking bootloader you just need to download the nexus 5 unlock bootloader app from google play to unlock bootloader then just install twrp manager from google play and theres your root bootloader unlock and custom recovery but thats upto the user as other people do it there way
It's remarkable what I'm willing to download and install from XDA sometimes.
Anyway, it certainly rooted my device without needing to hook it up to a PC. Threw two "this is bypassing android security" messages. Hope it didn't do anything else :/

All you do is use KingUser to grant permission to TWRP Manager to install TWRP and then use SuperSU to install SU through recovery THEN you can easily use SuperSU to grant permissions to any app that'll allow you to remove KingUser. That way you always have an app that can grant SU at all times without going ANY time at all without a SuoerUser app

Tried that but SuperSU kept failing to install. Ended up just wiping and going from scratch. The whole Kingroot sending data home to a server just didn't sit well with me. I know they've addressed that they do it to keep track of success rates and don't collect any personal data.

No, wiping data only happens when you unlock bootloader through the bootloader. . . not through the OS. I believe only of you use the Farnborough method instead of manually doing so inside of OS

My friend has nexus 5 tmobile. Will this work? If so any additional steps?
Hi. I'm a newbie in root matter. My nexus 5 is already in LMY48b 5.1.1. Hong Kong stock ROM. So far there's only one reason I want to root it, it is to let some call recorder apps to record incoming voice clearly. So at this stage I don't need to flash any custom ROM. I dug for a certain time of course I can find many teaching how to root, but most of them look like it involves many procedures, many terms or apps, unlock bootloader, android SDK, twrp, custom recovery, etc... it makes me so scared even to give it a try. Until I saw this thread and I think the kingroot app probably the simplest one for my case! In fact I can get it done with a Chinese root way, it's also very simple but I also heard that most likely there's spyware inside so I leave it.
So what I want to make sure is my thought above is it correct? I try not to annoy you guys, any answer simply either yes or no is appreciated. Of course if you guys want to tell me more it is most welcome.

The reason to unlock the bootloader is because if it is locked you can't run custom recovery (not flash, just a temp boot up with custom recovery), which is need for the root process, in short, you need to unlock the boot loader before you can do anything.
something like kingroot can bypass the need of an unlocked bootloader, so you actually can use kingroot to root your nexus first, then use those bootloader unlocker from play store to unlock the bootloader, but I will stay away from those tools because I don't trust them.
the toolkit can help you to unlock the bootloader and root, and do something else.
p.s. that means you need an unlocked bootloader to root, meanwhile can keep all other things (recovery, firmware) as stock.

Oh I see. Now I understand! Thank you very much. I got what I want to know.
I used this method after I unlocked with sunshine to remove king-root and replace it with SuperSU. It worked great for me. Kingroot is gone and i have a permanent root and SuperSU installed. I was wondering if there is someone else who has unlocked their boot-loader and not yet installed TWRP who can give it a shot to see if my expereince was a fluke or the norm. It would be a nice addition for people who want root but don't want TWRP installed for one reason or another.

I previously used the above method you posted to permanent root an LG Transpyre on 5.1.1 that did not have the bootloader unlocked. Glad to see someone else knows about it. :good:
Maybe it will work on a locked bootloader Turbo for those who don't want to unlock their phones but just want root.

I don't think that is the case.
What I said was you don't need to install a custom recovery.
Give it a shot report back though. Worst that can happen is it does not work.

Agreed. I was just pointing out that I was able to use kingroot and wolfdroid's method to permanent root a phone (albeit an lg phone) that had a locked bootloader. Other people also had success doing that as well on other brands of phones. Will it work on a Turbo with a locked bootloader? IDK. However I would not be surprised if it does. I had a Turbo with a locked bootloader but sold mine else I would try it myself.

I agree, i apologize if it it came off otherwise. I think the question is if the sunshine process removes the protection and allow writing to the system partition. I unlocked prior to making my root permanent so i cant test again but am very interested to see if it works with a locked boot loader

My thinking it that it probably will work because temp root can be obtained on a locked bootloader Turbo with kingroot. It's just that kingroot is unstable and often times does not survive reboot. However, wolfdroid's method is similar to using SuperSu Me(or SuperSume). It removes kingroot and replaces it with SuperSu, which of course is more stable and survives reboot.

If security is disabled and the system can write to the system partition it will work, if not, then I assume Sunshine disables it in the process of unlocking the boot-loader. Hopefully someone with a stock Turbo who was going to unlock anyway can verify.
Not sure why you wouldn't want a custom recovery. With custom recovery you can make backups of your entire phone image in case you screw something up. Many times in the past I've flashed something that didn't work as I expected. And with ROOT, if you flash something you can screw up something system-related. Very easy to boot back into TWRP recovery and restore the previous day's backup I had made. Like a time machine to erase your mistake.
And it's FREE. Doesn't cost anything.
Yes, with Titanium Backup (a powerful app) you can restore previous versions of an another app. (I choose to save 3 days worth of apps in Titanium Backup.) But with a TWRP custom recovery backup (also called a "nandroid"), you can save and restore the ENTIRE phone, including all system apps, all settings, everything. Very powerful, useful tool.
I wouldn't have a rooted phone without custom recovery. That's one of the main reasons I always buy phones where I can unlock the bootloader -- to install custom recovery (like TWRP or CW) and root.
If you screw something up and come asking for help, the first thing someone is going to ask is, "Did you make a backup?" And they are talking about a custom recovery backup.

As far as why... some people like chocolate... some people like vanilla. The question is not the merits of a custom recovery, it is if one is required to have persistent root on the phone.
I personally don't care about a custom recovery. I prefer the stock rom at this point because without fail most custom roms have some minor bug that inevitably annoys the sh*t out of me. I want root because i want an ad blocker. I want an ad blocker because I use my phone as a proxy for web traffic on a computer with network monitoring software and i would prefer my internet traffic not be visible to my employer. There is zero reason for a custom recovery to do what i want to do.
Hello guys i have a few questions,
I won on a auction a experia x performance for a cheap price new in box, but have some questions
1. Ive been searhing on this forum abit but how do i root it?
2. If i brick or boot loop it can i easy recover it like samsung? By flashing a offical rom ?
3. Is twrp anvailable for it?
4. Do magisks work on it to hide root?
unlocked bootloader is needed for root if im not mistaken .
Simple instructions
1. You should make sure your phone is in marshmallow, and backup your TA partition with dirtycow exploit (automatic script is floating in the forum) before proceed.
2. If your phone is already w/ 7+ firmware, use sony's flashmode and official 6.0 image to downgrade (then step 1)
3. After backup your TA you can safely unlock your device as you can anyway lock it back.
4. You do have to unlock before root your device, and remember unlock will lose DRMed capabilities such as camera and screen enhancement.

TWRP is officially available, and you can flash it back with flashtool + flashmode (not fastboot) even if soft bricked. Magisk is usable.
