Ok so i recently bought a S5 900F, one thing I've noticed is that 4K video from the S5 isn't as good as that from the Note 3, which i also had.
For some reason on the S5 the colours look slightly over saturated, the note 3 looks more natural.
Also video sharpness seem to be slightly better on the Note 3 aswell, I have a 4K monitor so can see the difference, which doesn't show on a 1080p screen .
The most annoying thing i've found recording in 4K on the S5, is that it has a tendency to skip if the lighting conditions suddenly change quickly, doesn't do it all of the time but when it does it spoils the video, I've tested another S5 and it does the same thing so it's a camera firmware issues that maybe fixed in the future, the Note 3 doesn't have this problem at all both where recorded on the same 64GB Samsung class 10 card.
Tbh i quite disappointed with 4K on the S5 if anything it should be better than that of the Note 3 but atm it isn't, as the S5 is still new i may get sorted out with future fixes, but as it stands the Sony sensor does a better job atm than the Samsung sensor in 4K.
If you are that serious about the quality of the camera than you should buy a real camera.

It's not the matter. S5 is new device and it has advance technology than n3. It should superior than n3 in terms of pictures and video quality. I hope its software problem than hardware coz software can be fix

So? The N3 is bigger than the S5 so it's easier to put better hardware in there.
Not the case of better hardware, the S5 has better hardware it's either to do with the new Samsung Sensor or the camera firmware.
We've only had one update so far I think for the S5, and with the sensor being new tech, we may see a few tweaks to it and the firmware in future updates.
But as it stands now camera is better picture wise than either the Note 3 & S4 , video on the otherhand moreso in 4K could be better.
And the very random skipping it sometimes does that really needs to be sorted though.
As for having a real camera, I've got a couple of really real camera's, but i don't tend to carry them around with me everywhere i go.

Im on the fence about this one, just my opinion but I felt the 13mp sony sensor was one of the best ever seen on a smart phone for all round experience. The S5 definitely takes better 'well lit' shots, however, the N3 kills it in low light and as for 4k I agree with OP, hopefully updates will improve it.

you ought to be careful some of your posts are considered trolling!
The S5 video seems equal to the N3 after installing this camera mod. This mod bumps the 4K bitrate up from 50 Mbps to 85 Mbps, etc. patterned after kevinrocksman's original N3 camera mod.
That is not to say that both devices then become identical. Or that one clearly outperforms the other. The mod vanquishes glaring differences, but the S5 still performs better in some aspects and less so in others. A nuanced comparison would need careful and controlled A/B testing.

I wonder how many of you when speaking about low light performance of the Camera for Photos actually use HDR ON ?
As for the 4k Video this is still very new tech currently limited to 5 minutes video which is not very good but it`s connected to some buffers filling up. I could imagine that the issue is mostly with the RAM memory not enough for 4k Video recording on the S5 as all of us know N3 has bigger Ram size which will explain why there is flickering on the S5 probably because video buffers are filled out.
Hope this helps.
It seems s5 is not a good choice

So all those other flagships with 4K video and 2GB ram are also unable to record too well? That's not the case. 2GB is well enough for the task.
This is more a sensor/Firmware issue in my opinion. Or camera tuning that is needed.
Some article mentioned that the limit is more of the phone hitting a Thermal threshold due to the high demand of 4k recording.

Really useless comment to post on an S5 forum, don't you think?

Maybe most of the tweaks to the camera firmware will come with 4.4.3, which is due this month on the S5.
Also Sony has a new 16mp OIS module coming out soon, which is apparently is going into the Note 4, looks like Samsung don't have much faith in it's own sensor if that being the case, because of all the bigging up they did of their own sensor here http://connect.dpreview.com/post/0315472077/samsung-explains-the-galaxy-s5-isocell-sensor
You think they would put it in the Note 4 if rumours end up being true.

Was is a good choice? your iPhone?
Definitely need to buy a camera if you're really concerned about video.
I need a new phone, and am currently interested in the Huawei P9 Plus or the Samsung S7 Edge.
The main tak of my new phone should be for video and photography (besides me using it as a phone )
Which one is the better camera?
Based on experience
For video the Samsung is the better phone (4K Video). Based on reading the spec sheets.
Moreover the S7E has the optical image stabilization (OIS) that is very useful especially for video recording.
And now the international unbranded S7E can be found with a price slightly lower than the P9+.
Huawei P9 plus
I have used samsung for 6 years .. I never saw any of their cameras that can match that of the P9 or P9 plus .
The P9 line has the Leica double lens technology , it does not need OIS to perform in a superior way .. I am now the proud owner of the P9 plus ..

Personal experience here:
Video : S7 Edge => OIS is a win. P9 Plus come with digital IS but your video will still be choppier and trimmed due to the technology.
Photo : S7 Edge => Much superior autofocus and low-light performance (f/1.7). Both perform admirably during daytime so the difference here come down pretty much to personal preference. I personally like the Leica interface and some of the modes come with that (shoot first, focus later, filters, light photography, night mode etc). P9 tends to get a little too grainy during low-light shots and slow to get a focus on things.
Black&White Photography : P9 Plus, hands down. No B&W filter can come close to the level of details and contrast that the dedicated cam on the P9 Plus can bring. The result is just gorgeous even when you shoot the most random stuff.
As far as the potential of the tech go, P9 Plus has much more potential. The post processing and the lowlight performance can theoretically be improved with a software update but I wont hold my hope for that. As is now, the S7 Edge still has the edge (forgive the pun) when you consider the overall performance for things you use daily. So unless you are a big fan of B&W photography, pick the Edge.
Great review. That confirms pretty much the general opinion on the online reviews I've read elsewhere. Have you played with RAW images at all? Just wondering if that improves things.
The S7 is sharp, detailed and hard to fault
but the P9 has its charms. It leans heavily on artistic styling, where image fidelity comes second. sometimes it has trouble focusing and without ois blur is fairly common in low light situations.
Some people look Samsung oversharpening filter as more detail... but it's really exaggerated on S7/S7E.

yer that's valid. tbh the output from the S7 cam doesn't show any improvement over the S6
compared side by side when zoomed right in, P9 pics do show a noticeable lack of detail however

One thing to consider regarding the P9 camera is that it has issues with popular apps. As of today, the camera doesn't work properly with WhatsApp or Snapchat. You get odd issues like auto zoom, slowmo videos, audio issues.....and no update from Huawei to fix.

Samsung can shoot 120 and 240 fps. Big deal for slow mo lovers.
Huawei p9 plus destroys samsung s7 edge in terms of camera,p9 plus can do manual configuration, just need to study about iso, exposure, shutter etc. just like DSLR,if auto i take S7 edge, but if manual mode,Big YES for Huawei P9 Plus.
Hi,
So I recently pickedup Oneplus 5. I had Honor 8 Pro already. I was planning to sell the Honor 8 Pro and Make Oneplus 5 my daily driver. I was looking forward to "Dual Cameras. Clearer Photos"
But the moment I started snapping some pics, I was left dismayed by the sub-par, borderline poor image quality produced by on the paper very good cameras! The photos were full of noise and a lot dark! I expected good low light performance from a 1.7 aperture lens but in reality, the camera kept pushing the ISO and shutter speed to really high levels in very good and well lit conditions as well!
The night shots were so bad I didn't even bother keeping them. Why does such a GOOD on paper camera take such crappy photos? The fine detail is smudged up. The dynamic range is horrendous, HDR or no HDR. The lights get blown out and the darks are too dark to keep any details! Most pics come under exposed.
I am really disappointed. And from the research I did afterwards (I wish I had done it before...). It seems its an open-secret and Oneplus aren't really keen on fixing it...
Please check this Album. I have taken similar photos with Honor 8 Pro and then Oneplus 5.
I might add more later.
Let me know which one is better...

Well. I am not asking for PROFESSIONAL looking picture. See the other phone I posted has 4 less mega pixels. An aperture of 2.2 compared to 1.7. But still it takes sharper and less noisy images with greater detail and colour accuracy.
Lol just go back to the honor 8 pro then? I dont know how those photos came up that crappy but I get decent shots on the one plus 5. Try usin gcam.
Not sure what's to complain about. It's a cell phone camera of course it's gonna be pretty crappy. What about everything else about the phone? I get 8-9 hours sot every day no matter what I do on it. I think that more than makes up for a camera.
I Took this with my op5 and it's better than all of your pictures. Go get a professional camera and a flip phone.

I think that stupid argument has already been raised by one person. What are you comparing that shot against?
If you had a Honor 8 pro. You would have gotten a better version of it.
So please if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense. I can also take great shots using mods and what not then tweak them on PC and post.
Edit: And if you consider complaining about poor camera performance on a flagship with 'Dual cameras. Clearer photos' tagline; then you should get the Fanboy of the year award!

Well you say ".. if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense." , so.. what did you contribute besides saying that your honor is SO much better than an OP and just showing up Pictures where I dont think that an OP5 would shot SUCH bad shots and also These are just random shots where also half of These look very similar to me.
Also, you know, this is the OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion Forum, so yeah this is neither some News nor a Guide and also no Discussion as ist just plain complaining from your side.
So to contribute for the forum and all the People here im going to Report this thread and hope that other People do this too.
It's definitely not a secret that One Plus has a terrible camera app. My $150 Samsung Galaxy J3 could take better pictures, especially in low light. If the camera app on the OP5 wasn't such utter crap there wouldn't be a very long thread on XDA filled with people using the Google Pixel camera app on this phone. The OP5 is never going to be a good camera phone. One Plus only supports Camera 1 API which is very dated and limited. Google introduced the Camera 2 API on the Nexus 5X which I think was running Marshmallow.
If you want proof the camera will never be fixed just look at the 5T. One Plus did not tout that as a great camera phone like they did with the OP5. One Plus also ditched the telephoto lense in favor of a low light lense because they don't know how to fix the software issue with the OP5 camera. Like you said on paper the OP5 has great camera hardware. But One Plus doesn't have the talented software engineers that could actually take advantage of it.
I can't see myself buying another One Plus phone because I think they are a terrible company. Whatever phone One Plus releases is based on a model from Oppo. The difference? The One Plus version will have better on paper hardware specs and the Oppo version will have far better build quality. The Oppo version will also take much better pictures.
The build quality of the OP5 is lousy. My first one was unusable after about 3 months because of a defective motherboard and even though the phone was under warranty One Plus customer service and warranty repair is so horrible the only way I could get a working phone was to file an insurance claim and pay $150 deductible.
I was sent a brand new replacement phone and right out of the box the headphone jack was bad. I had to switch to Bluetooth because wired headphones don't work--the headphone plugs fall right out of the jack.
Then there's OOS. It's the programming equivalent of a custom ROM that you might flash on another phone. I do a clean flash every time there is a build update because dirty flashes consistently resulted in problems. A stock ROM should not be coded that poorly but it's an open secret that One Plus lost all of its best software engineers and the talent drain forced them to combine development of Oxygen and Hydrogen (the Chinese operating system) under one roof and all the programmers they have left are from the Hydrogen side. The problem with that is that One Plus is a very minor brand in Asia so they don't attract the best talent.
There aren't even plans to release an official version of Lineage Oreo for this phone. The OP5 was only sold for 4 months. If One Plus doesn't care about this phone why should major software devs?

Edit: Added another pic...?
The softness of Oneplus 5 main cam pics is a known issue (aka water colour effect); I have compared the pics from OP5 with LG G6 and Samsung Note 4. (My opinion = Note 4 was best). I was as disappointed as you are now, i suppose. However, since I had no choice but to use OP5, I found certain workarounds. Hopefully they'll help you too.
1) ALWAYS use manual mode for normal photos! (no need to tweak any settings, keep all on auto. Manual mode apparently doesn't use the same compression algo that main cam does => sharpness increased & noise reduction improved)
2) Check out the 100% jpeg mod in the forum. It's really works
3) Don't zoom in on every pic. I know it sounds silly but it's like a psychological itch you must scratch - don't. On the whole, the pics are pretty awesome if you just enjoy them as they are and not analyse too deep.
Cheers!
PS : Apologies for not being able to post comparison pics, I don't have those phones anymore. Just take my word for it

Yes. I have found out that manual mode takes more cleaner pics compared to auto.
I am using the Gcam mod and it actually does some justice to the sensor on Oneplus 5!

Hi.
I've got an offer to buy a 1 month old Nokia 8 for 250 euro/300 dollars.
I've been looking at the Nokia 7 plus which is about 390 euro/460 dollar in my country.
I've got a Iphone 7 as it is, but i really wanna go back to Android now that i finally have the option and my all time favorite phone is Nexus 1, so i want so close to stock android as possible.
The biggest fear i've got is the camera. I don't want anything worse then i got today. Would you say it's worse/same/better?
Which one would you buy if you had the chance?
Thanks in advance!
Look at the specs. You will see the Nokia 8 much better than 7th.
NOKIA 8 is one of the most underrated telefon, SD 835 and 250 € it's a great deal.

At the moment Nokia is not keeping up to their promise, they're busy with launching more models and Nokia 8 is not getting their May Security Patch yet, and it's not Project Treble... Camera also has no Pro Manual mode yet.
So if you want a long lasting software patching phone I suppose any of their new Android One is better...
2 days ago I was so tempted to sell off my 6 months old Nokia 8 to replace with Mi Mix 2s because of Android P beta preview. Even my Mi 5 running LineAge OS has May Security Patch!
Updated: just tried out Google camera (as others suggested) on Nokia 8, it crash my phone when I turn on Motion option, and HDR set to High quality isn't great, mainly just over exposed compared to Medium (Default).

Premium feel is when the camera works fluently without mods. Even with mods the camera is mediocre and can't compete with any flagships past few years.

You're either a hater or you haven't held a Nokia 8 in your hands that uses Google Camera.
The results I get with this thing are better than most of the recent flagships and almost matches the images you can get on a Pixel 2.
Pls refrain from posting bull$h!t and confusing the OP. Thx.
I'm neither of what you accuse. I'm just not giving false hope for OP coming from iPhone 7 that Nokia 8 camera is on par with competition.

You can get a little better results with mods of course, but it won't fix the limitations of that Sony sensor. It's still slow and mediocre in low light / indoors.

The difference is day and night. It's not "a little better". Low light as well - drastically different than the default camera app processing.
Pls end your nonsense. It's HMD's fault that they screwed up the camera app. But this is a huge and significant mod that breathes new life into this phone's camera capabilities.
The camera really is bad , i have the nokia 8 and i agree
But also agree that with google camera it works a thousand times better and it has no problem matching the quality of the photos of iphone 7
Regarding to everything else , nokia 8 is better in everything , snapdragon 835 is just fabulous , ram management is also good
Batttery life , power and everything else is close to the iphone 7 , if you want to go back to android , sell iph7 , win big money and buy nokia 8 , is the best choice

Installing another manufacturer's algorithms won't fix the slow shutter speed and low light capabilities of the 1.12 um sensor.
Every android phone that i've tried has some pluses and minuses in google camera app mods. Usually low light images are better but that's it, then you might experience glare in day shots or something else.. oh and you lose all the gimmicks that the oem has put on its software/hardware (nokia 8 dual lens for example and ozo sound in video).
So it's a hit or miss.. Especially when there are no apks that are optimized for nokia 8.
And believe me, i would love to be wrong in this, but in this current state the camera is mediocre.. with or without mods. I hope nokia would use that second lens to improve low light..

Agree, I spend more money (on non Chinese brands) because of Nokia's quality, it's losing the purpose of pay a premium for Zeiss Lens and not able to benefit the Dual or PIP features in the stock app. The lens (and it's features) and USB 3 was the only reason Nokia worth the premium for, else it is just a Mi 6.

Is there a reason why there aren't any custom ROMs here for Nokia devices?

I think the bootloader can't be unlocked yet.

Thing is, the need for unlocking of bootloader needs to be pushed to the OEM. Something like filing a petition or something. So that we can show the responsible person..
I did some comparative shots with one of my work colleagues. He has a Samsung Galaxy S9+. We took the same photos in the same conditions and all his photos were sharper, more detailed and with less noise. Even low light shots where I had night mode enabled, his still took better pictures and he doesn't even have night mode.
Pretty disappointing.
upload the samples, let us judge it too
I've come from the S9+ and the Mate 20 Pro is better

Hmm.... I don't have so but I have s8 to compare.. Mp20 takes way better pictures in any situations.. Please post the samples you are comparing.. Maybe it's just the Samsung screen is better than our Mp20.
I'm also coming from the S9+ and the shots on the Mate 20 Pro are consistently better, with more details.
What I noticed, though, is that OIS on the S9+ seems to be superior to the stabilization on the M20Pro - specifically in low light situations. But we are talking about subtle nuances here ....
I think camera is superb
My mate 20 pro camera is way better at night than my note 9 ugly camera
You got defective unit, the only camera that beats mate at times, is the Pixel.

ok, I have this problem too!
Bought a mate 20 pro yesterday and today I was comparing the pictures with the S9 and the Mate and all of them are way better with more detail in the S9.
I'm in panic now!
i will post the comparative pictures.
edit:
Left one is from a Galaxy S9 and the right one is the Mate.

The photo you took is totally different composition, the monitor LED light might effect the result also. Should take a photo with same composition.
another ones
edit:
don't know why the S9 image stays always upside down after uploading..

Do you think the m20p is a good upgrade from the s8/s8+ especially including the free pre order gifts?
anyone know if this phone has diferent camera sensores like samsung (Sony and samsung sensor)?
I can't believe that my S9 with only one camera take way BETTER shots than the Mate 20 pro.
Too much disappointed with this!
Don't know if I'm doing anything wrong...
I bought this because I was tired of the Samsung ui and the slow (NO) updates... but payed a lot more for this phone and comparing the pictures.. 90% of them are worst than the S9.
The pictures in the Huawei are way more darker...
first- S9
Second -Mate
Auto Setting in both phones.
Huawei with AI off

Well yeah.. The phone itself is nice. Good upgrade if your coming from s8..
Ok, while I really like this phone for it's camera capabilities, it's fair to say my experience with the M20Pro shooter has been a bit mixed. I am coming from a S7 edge (great camera for its time). My girlfriend has an iPhone XS, so that's also a good reference.
The good: the wide angle lens is amazing, great for pictures of architecture and nature, shots look dramatic and fairly unique. Night mode is also good, when it get's it right, it renders a really impressive picture. Portrait mode is a bit agressive, but does an above average job bluring the foreground as well as the backgroud. Aperture mode is neat and more natural looking than portrait. AI is ok, it get's things right more often than not. I haven't used much the 3x zoom yet, but I guess it can come in handy.
The bad: no optical image stabilization - it may seem like nitpicking, but this phone takes a lot of blured shaky picures for a flagship, especially in low light situations. You may find yourself having to have to hold it steady and firm for a good second or two in some situations to get a usable shot. If you're trying to take pictures from moving subjects, like pets or kids, this device is not your greatest friend. The dinamic range is also not the best, lagging significantly behind iPhone and Pixel - the shadows tend to be darker while the highlights do blow sometimes. I found that a little post production goes a long way with the M20P shots - when you recover those shadows, add a tad of sharpness and maybe a bit of saturation you can make a rather dull pic look amazing - but I can understand how the average user might not want to go throught that. Also not great is the HDR, firstly because it's a separate hidden mode in the extras (when it should be a toggle always readily available on the interface), secondly because, as mentioned, while usable, it's not top class - and again the lack of OIS makes things trickier.
All in all, I am mostly pleased with this camera because of its versatility. You can acomplish pictures with the M20P that no other phone can match - like a wide angle night shot. Having said that, it's certainly not the best point and shoot phone camera out there - to get the most of it you have to wrestle through the endless menus and modes and sometimes work a bit on the post production. So, if you don't care abou the wide angle lens and just want a phone camera that spits out eye catching images 9 times out of 10, I guess you could be better served with a Pixel 3, iPhone Xs or even a Galaxy S/Note 9.
Those are my two cents, but I'm curious to read what you guys think.
Cheers.
