So I'm starting to get to know the ropes with some basic Android development in Eclipse. Most things are working fine, and I recently built my first signed packages and installed them on my G1 and my wife's milestone. However, I've hit a snag trying to provide custom icons for my apps.
In the eclipse IDE, there are three folders in res/ named drawable-hdpi, drawable-mdpi and drawable-ldpi. In each one, there's a icon.png of the default Android app icon, in 72x72, 48x48 and 36x36 pixels respectively.
I've created a (pretty crumby) icon for my app, and I have resized it to those three sizes and replaced the original icon.png files in each directory.
But when I build the .apk, it comes with the default icon packaged. What am I missing here?
REWARD:
Any skinner that creates and either posts or sends me a valid OMC theme to publish gets the full app for free!
One More Clock! has been on the market for a few weeks, and recently I've added a powerful skinning engine to the app. However, what's a good skinning engine without skins? The first place I thought of was XDA.
So without further ado:
The app is available on the market as One More Clock Free... the apk is also attached.
1) Add one OMC widget to your home screen. Then click on the clock to get to the options screen.
2) Click on "Widget Theme" to download the starter pack. After that is done, you will have an /OMC folder on your sd card.
3) Click on "Enable/Disable Widget Sizes" from the prefs screen and enable Theme Tester. Back out until you get back to your home screen.
4) The attached 4 tutorials can then be unzipped over the existing content in the OMC folder.
5) Look at the 00control.xml file in each of the four folders for a detailed tutorial on how OMC skinning works!
The OMC Theme Tester (the Raccoon) is a handy tool for rapid tweaks and changes to your theme:
1) Once you have a valid basic xml file, copy the theme folder to the SD card using ADB explorer or similar.
2) Fire up the OMC theme tester on your phone/emulator, and select your theme from the list.
3) the 4x2, 4x1 and 3x1 widgets are rendered onscreen and re-read from sdcard every 3 seconds.
4) make any changes you have for the fonts, bitmaps or 00control.xml file from your computer, and push to the phone via ADB to see the changes instantly!
When you're happy with the theme, just zip up the theme folder and rename the extension to .omc .
To offer downloads of the theme to paid users, after you upload the .omc file, rename the http:// to omc:// and https:// to omcs:// . OMC (paid version) is configured to automatically install any themes found at an omc: link, no download/unzip required.
Thanks!
I guess I can go first, too...
Since I laid down a reward for skinners, I guess I should prove OMC to be worth your time. Here you go (Iron Indicant)... this theme was created in 2 hours over the last two days (mostly photoshopping the background).
The clock face rotates with the time of day. There aren't many clock widgets out there that can render that...
Or this one (Hello Droid) - just something fun and different. Can I interest anyone?
Or how about this (Vertical)?
And second...
Here's a theme that a tester submitted to me earlier. Anyone interested?
And third.
Just one more for today - Dyma Dynamics.
This guide is to help people start creating Themes for ADW and understand what they are doing.
Instead of just replacing images by unzipping an APK I will tell you how to create your own theme from scratch.
I had a real struggle to find all this and I now I want to share what I found out
I will provide you with links with content that you should read and write some things by myself.
How to : Setup your working environment
How to : Make your own theme
Where should I put my images/xml?
The drawables (images/xml) should be putted in the drawable folder as standard. If you want to have different images for different pixel density(xhdpi/hdpi/mdpi/ldpi) make the folders: drawable-xhdpi,drawable-hdpi,drawable-mdpi and drawable-ldpi.
the text behind the hyphen (-) is a configuration qualifier. Android looks for these and if it suits the specific device it will choose the drawables from that folder instead of from the default folder. If a resource android looks for isn't found in the special folder it will instead look in the default folder for it.
If you want different images for landscape mode you would need to create a folder called drawable-land and if you want different images when the device is both mdpi and in landscape you would create a folder called drawable-land-hdpi.
Find out more about resource qualifiers
How do I add my own icons?
Find the name of the icon you want to replace at Theme Icon Name Database
Place your own drawable in the right folder.
E.g. To change the icon for the Android stock browser in a hdpi device I would ad a file called com_android_browser_browseractivity.png in drawable-hdpi. If I want the same icon for all devices that uses my theme I could add the same icon in the folder drawable.
How do I export my theme for testing?
Right click on you project in Eclipse and select export. Click the Android folder and select Export Android Application. Press next and then next again. Choose "Use existing keystore". Press browse.
In windows find C:\Users\ENTER YOUR USERNAME HERE\.android\debug.keystore
In Linux and OS X I think it is in: ~/.android/debug.keystore
The Password is android.Press next.Choose "Use existing key".
Alias: androiddebugkey
Password:android
Press next. Press browse and choose your destination of the apk. Click Finish and you are done.
Help! ADW force closes and I can't uninstall the theme!
Look here for sulution
If there is something that needs to be added send me a PM or write a comment.
I will add: program to use to create the images and eventually a complete sample theme with documentation.
If you find the tutorial good, please post to bump the thread.
hello
can you tell me how i make one of CUSTOM DOCK using the v0.3 dock_pack.xml standard in the theme ?
thanks
Nice guide damn thats a big youtube video lol
Hi there. Just wondering if you have gotten multiple wallpapers into a theme , and if they look right on screen?
I can change the wallpaper in the theme but i want to have a couple to choose from. Also i have tried a wallpaper that has a built in 'dock' graphic at the bottom. When i add it to a theme the dock is completely below the bottom. Any hints?
i hate that if after done with my theme and it says application not installed.
somebody knows how to fix it?
Hello everyone!
I've decided to start a new thread here, in the Android Themes forum, to teach you how to create your own icons missing in the biggest icons pack ever, called "Vexillum Project" for the MIUI ROM, that contains over 1300 .png files and also to contribute to expand it!
Even if there are hundreds of icons, it may happen that you use apps that don't have the right icon yet. So i've opened this thread where i'm gonna write, step by step, what you gotta do if you want to create them.
I know that there is already a guide on the Vexillum project thread but i found it a little bit confusing and to make it clear i rewrite the guide as good as i can to help you.
Once you have done your icons i pray you to post them on the original thread, so they would be put in the next release of the pack and everyone would enjoy them.
So, i won't write only the metod to create icons and put them in the pack yourself, i wanna collect all the icons developers (designers) in this thread of the Vexillum Project and everyone who would like to become one of them. This would help all the people that have icons requests and, of course, they aren't considered for the tens of post that everyday invade the original thread.
However, people the have requests should write the name of the app they need next to the market link to speed the process of creating.

HOW TO CREATE AN ICON
1. save the model icon to your PC from the net
(model icon = is picture that contains the symbol or the name of the app)
2. download the public template from here
(public template = is a .psd file that, once opened with photoshop, would help you to cut out the icon so it can fit with the other theme's icons)
3. open the public template file with photoshop
4. open your model icon (source file) with photoshop
5. select the parts of the model icons that you want to keep (with "Magic Wand Tool" or other select metods)
6. right click (don't deselect) and choose "select inverse"
7. click the "canc" button on your keyboard and all the parts you don't need will be deleted
8. select the "crop tool" on the left
9. on the top, in "width" write "80 px" and in "height" write "80 px"
10. crop the icon using "maiusc" (on the keyboard) to do a squared crop then click the "V" on the top to confirm
11. select "rectangular marquee tool" on the left
12. select all the icon and copy it
13. move to the public template tab you opened before and "paste" the icon
14. choose the background color just keeping visible it (click on the little square on the left of the color layer) on the right-bottom layers
15. select the "sample" layer (with a green cicle) then right click
16. select "copy layer style"
17. select "layer 1" (where you paste your icon) and right click
18. select "paste layer style"
19. select "file" on the top-left then "save for web & devices"
20. make sure that on the top-right "PNG-24" is insert
21. save it to your PC and public it on the original thread or below
(if you do more then 2 icons, please make a .zip file when you post them)
