Hello everybody,
so now this is my first posting.
I took an advantage on ebay to get me a near new I9000 for a low price. I was interested to see how Android smartphones
work, what is inside and how to customize.
In between time and after reading much about ROM's and Kernels and so on i decided to go for the CyanogenMod ROM by pawitp.
When i finally got my I9000 to my surprise it was already rooted and had a CM11 flavor onboard.
So i took the chance and made a backup and did a full wipe etc.. and got the latest Nightly (2014_04_22) and the gaaps up
and running quite nicely.
No problems so far.
Everything is fine except the in-call volume on the handset.
Speaker volume and headset volume seem quite o.k. and are manageable through DSP Manager .
However, the earpiece volume is maxed-out but still much lower than on my stock S3 mini, which was given to me by my employer.
Stock and beyond any rooting or so...understandable?
So i read a lot and tried various apps (one after the other) (Voodoo sound, Volume+ to name two) as recommended here.
No avail. Volume of the earpiece seems to be quite a different beast.
What i did not try, and hopefully will not have to, are Meltus Volume hacks or manipulating values by the service codes.
So, does anybody have an idea if the CM11 will get around this problem one day or the other?
I do not want to use another ROM nor do i feel i want another Kernel to mix with.
Perhaps this thread is obsolete, so please put me into the right direction if so.
Or, maybe someone who is allowed to do so can transport this Q into the ROM thread of pawitp.
Thank you all for you attention and have a nice day.

It might be the highest limit to the i9000 (It's an old phone, at least appreciate it for even running). However, I suggest you do change your ROM once, just to check if it is a problem with your ROM. If you do change, I suggest trying Paranoid Android or OmniROM. At times, the Kernel might also make a change. If again you do want to change your Kernel, I suggest Semaphore 3.4.3 or Mackay Kernel
Hit Thanks if I helped!

Thank you for the answer.
Sure: You are right it is an "old" phone.
And i appreciate the work of the volunteers to keep it up and running.
Hopefully i will find the time during the next days to follow your advice.
Maybe i will even try to go back to stock and check how the phone behaves in it's original environment.
At the moment i am puzzled by another problem. I miss FM radio so much.
Seems as if this feature is missing in a whole lot of ROMs because of massive changes of the "ekosystem" to put it in my words.
But this is not the thread for that. I have to read and learn a lot.
Again, thank you.
Regards,
Frank

About the Radio thing, I think you can download another Radio app like this one. If that doesn't work, I'm guessing then Radio might be disabled in your ROM. Semaphore has the option of enabling or disabling FM Radio.

Yes.
I went back to the stable release CM10.2 .
Somewhere on the internet i found a free beta from Spirit2 and installed it just for a test.
It did not run smooth but i could grab FM and listen by speaker and headphones.
What made me nervous is the "speaker damage" disclaimer...
As for the in-call volume: With 10.2 it seems to be louder.
Headphones and speaker are fine but earpiece (or handset?) still is a bit quiet for to use in noisy environments.
But anyway. Before taking further action i test a while.
I want to use this phone as a private phone when i am on commissioning jobs. I often work at industrial sites and since i am not allowed
to make any private calls off my companies' S3 mini i thought it was a good idea to carry a relatively cheap and reliable smartphone
with me.
Besides the academical aspect to know what makes a smartphone work i want a useful and stable operating system without any bloatware.
I will keep in touch with the CM11 thread and from time to time check if they finally achieve a stable release.
Maybe a shoot a second SGS off ebay just to look after OMNI ROM as you suggested.
By now i will stay with the CM10.2 and see if it is stable.
And yes, i am going to root my wifes's Xperia Pro
Thanks again for your attention!

Xperias are a tough nut to crack. But, you will have fun rooting it. It took me 3 days (Spent 4 hours each) to get root and Install CM on an Xperia Arc S!
Just a small update

I got me another i9000 for cheap.
Running OMNI KitKat for now with nightly build.
That is a really nice ROM with a smooth feel and just as customizable as a an average user with passion for android can manage.
So thank you, Gokulbalram for the hint.

I need one cellphone for "productive use". Means that is has to work.
So to try something, and run the risk of having software or hardware problems for a few days, i need another device.
Plus it is nice to see how official CM11 and official OMNI CM11 compete.
At the moment i would say that OMNI is a little bit upfront. I am going to ask my son to put his SIM card to
it and try out and see if it is stable.

At the moment, my i9000 runs Omni's latest nightlies. Also, I've flashed Neo Kernel. It's very smooth without much noticeable lag.
Long time Android user here. I'm debating on whether or not I'd like to pull the trigger and root/flash a custom ROM to my brand new Nexus 6 (seriously, still has that new-phone smell). My girlfriend and I both got these beauties the same day and love them to pieces.
However...
Coming from a rooted/customized S3 and M7 I'm already missing the customization features that rooting devices allowed. Although I wouldn't have any issues doing so, I'm a bit concerned with potential bugs that could occur while using custom ROMs.
For instance, when I bought my M7, before I rooted it, the call quality was phenomenal. Then after rooting/flashing a custom OS, the quality seemed to drop substantially. No matter which ROM/kernel sets I used, there were always data and/or performance issues including, but not limited to, Pandora app skipping even when data (LTE) was at max reception.
I'm not asking which custom ROM is better as that would be a "to each their own" situation. I've, personally, been a fan of Liquid Smooth and ran it as a daily driver for my S3 (and ViperOne for my M7), but from what I've seen in the development pages there are quite a few ROMs I'd like to try out.
I wanted to see what people who've already rooted and flashed custom ROMs thought of their Nexus 6 post-awesomizing. Did the call quality change? Other than listed ROM bugs, were there any frequent issues that continued through various ROMs and kernel combinations?
Thanks, in advance, to anyone and everyone who replies!
Cheers,
Blue

The problem with HTC and Samsung devices, is that they are not truly open source. For a "dev" to get an AOSP ROM built for those devices can be quite an ordeal and can require many hacks to be made and many bugs will be found trying to get the AOSP source code to fit that device... The Nexus does not have this problem as AOSP is designed for it. Even a monkey could compile a bug free AOSP rom for the nexus, so don't worry about that sort of thing.

That's quite a relief to read. So there hasn't been any known issues with the call quality suffering? That is my biggest concern as with my HTC (post root/flash) the call quality was horrendous! It sounded like the person on the other line was constantly mumbling. The quality on the Nexus 6, as of now, is so crisp and clear it sounds as if they're sitting right next to me.
I'll definitely be looking forward to trying out the various ROMs available.

Yep, with a nexus those sort of issues should be a thing of the past. HTC are particularly bad as on teh M7, they themselves couldn't even get GPE to run properly (Speaker quality took a tumble).
Also, you may not know but Xposed framework just came out with an Alpha. In a short while, it wil get more stable and modules will get updated for Lollipop, meaning you will probably be able to add much of that customisation without changing from the stock rom.

I've heard of the manufacturer UI's getting in the way of performance with devices. I'm glad I went with the pure Google goodness this time! I'll keep an eye on Xposed, but I think you've helped my decision in rooting today.
Now to impatiently wait for work to be over and rush home to my laptop!

Good luck.
It is also my personal recommendation that you don't use a toolkit and you use fastboot natively..

It's Nexus man The best dev support is available for Nexus devices All ROMs has bugs and you'll have to bear with it. But the ROMs for Nexus devices meet stable version sooner than others. Taking Parandroid Android as an example. Visit their website and you'll be able to find that the main team focus on the Nexus line and they've legacy team to support other devices. I was also an user of S3 (Exynos variant) and PA used to be a great custom ROM for me

Yes I suppose a caveat to what I have already said, there will still be bugs on roms due to devs making customisations and you will see their bugs potentially. When I say bug free, I'm just talking about a clean AOSP rom affecting the fundamentals of the device.

I'm currently running Euphoria OS on my N6. It is based on CM12, and offers a lot of customization options without actually having to enable root. I've been running it for almost a month now, and I have yet to feel a need to go into Developer Options and flip the switch for root access.
From a call quality standpoint, we are all running the same radio versions, so it will come down to your area. I work in an area where T-Mobile is spotty (my building specifically, LTE is stupid fast outside of it) and so I'm eagerly awaiting the update which adds WiFi Calling to AOSP. As it stands now, my phone does activate HD Voice and show an indicator icon in the dialer when I'm on with another T-Mobile user.
Maybe I can use this to convince my girlfriend to let me root hers, as well. She's never had an unlocked device before and she's very cautious about it, but I'm sure I could convince her.
Thanks again, all!
Quick question, does any one have a good recommendation on a guide to root my n6 I don't want to use a tool kit because I'm hearing its better to do root through fastboot if that's correct. I've been rooting phone for some time now but I've only dealt with fastboot once before with an HTC device. All my other devices where s2 to s5. And I usually used chainfires tool kits. So could someone please set me in right direction as far as guides go? Thanks

If you already have TWRP installed, just flash SuperSU. It used to require an insecure boot image due to Lollipop's security features removing root on each boot, but now the new SuperSU injects root each time.

Its pretty simple.
Use fastboot to unlock bootloader (wipes device]
use fastboot to flash TWRP recovery
Put SuperSU zip on sdcard and flash that via TWRP recovery.
There are guides in general. The main thing is understanding using fastboot. I have a thread on that.
Go to general > all in one thread > question 28
Thank you for quick response guys? Rooting today can't take it anymore.

Well xposed is Alpha - not ready for public consumption.
Also, xposed module features are never as good as ones compiled directly into the ROMs. They're just not as efficient. Xposed doesn't replace the need for custom ROMs.

Well, Xposed is working flawlessly on nexus 5 and 6 without causing any issue That's why suggested Yeah, that doesn't replace the need of custom ROM but that actually add more feature of user's choice
Not sure if this has been posted or perhaps if this can start a whole thread on 100% working custom roms.
This may come off as a bit of a rant, and i am no begger nor a complainer.. but I have reach my wits end. This isnt some newb who has just been in the scene, I have been around since the G nexus and never ran into so many problem then with this phone. I am so tired of getting updates that hose roms.. or roms that need 3-4 band aides before its even usable. Rom/developers that dont even test for the phone that they are releasing for leaving us dependent on the care of the developer to take the time to fix said issues.. CAF roms that constantly lose LTE connections. NON CAF builds where we are lucky if GPS works and doesnt reboot our phones. I mean come on. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. What does it take for us to just get something that works? Does this mean we HAVE to use stock roms to achieve this or is it safe to say, with all the revisions, models, updates, that the lg g2 has been and will always be a lemon.
What is YOUR opinion on this? No one else feel the same way as I?
It just seems like enough is enough. I cant think of the last custom rom that wasnt stock based that wasnt 100% working for lg g2.
Can anyone recommend some custom roms asop or other that WORK out of the box, no special flashing, no special permission, JUST WORKS?!
Thank you for your time.
I have used Xdabebb's rom and other rom's that are based on stock rom's, they work great, while I had issues with CM/AOSP. The stock rom's are good enough for daily use.
I agree wholeheartedly. It is downright daunting, all the different roms out there and they all seem to have some sort of bug or function that doesn't work. As ECrispy said, there are some that are "good enough", I noted that you said that, rather than "great" or "perfect" or "very good". Is there a rom out there that's a bug-free, no compromise, light weight rom that's better than stock? I have my qualms with stock, but but but, everything works.
Which is the most stable stock rom? I need to reflash mine as I have been running on an old rom for about a year. Any suggestions?
I would be running the cloudy g4 stock rom, for the camera benefits and the fact that its not completely ugly like G2 stock. Except no matter how much I mess with it I cannot get all the verizon networking to function properly.
I'm on and older JackpotClavin cm build, I've been on his builds for a while
I just want awesome battery, performance, and camera without losing Android Pay

This. Right. Here.
I believe this is the issue that that caused the VS980 support to be dropped from CM. The last commit was something along the lines of "let's pull builds until someone figures out the RIL problems". I have been unable to find a CAF rom that will consistently connect to LTE like a stock based rom. I'm currently running GalacticStryder's PA build for VS980, it will keep a data connection (unlike other roms that will lose connectivity when switching from LTE>3g or wifi>LTE). Unfortunately, it doesnt like to switch back to LTE after dropping to 3g in a timely fashion.
Im currently using a g5 ported rom for g2, stock. So far, loving it.

The automatic APN settings provided by CM upon connecting to the internet over the cell towers didn't work, so I simply deleted them all, manually input the APN values specific to my mobile provider (China Telecom) and then GSM+WCDMA as the preferred network type. You MUST know what network type and APN settings are required for your phone in order for you to get 3G or 4G data connection. The only small but minor issue is when you listen to music from the speaker, not using headphones, it's very low. Anyone who has a G2 knows that it has ****ty sound quality if you don't use headphones. On that note, WOW, the music player and equalizer on the new CM13 are amazing! This has now boosted the volume by at least 30-35% for me. The base and surround sound while using headphones is clean, crisp and clear. It blows away the sound quality using stock android 5.0.1
I can't stress that enough because I have dirt cheap headphones that now sound like they're moderately high quality because of that. As far as other bugs/issues, they're all very minor things which aren't very noticeable and don't affect the overall working condition of the phone. All-in-all I salute the CyanogenMod team for all of their efforts. Going from Android lollipop 5.0.2 with all of the bloatware apps, fast draining battery, and consistently slow performance of the phone, I can safely say I'm very satisfied with the transition.

Considering it's the same radio -- same signal quality -- for both why would there be a difference?
"Limited Edition" doesn't make your phone any better, by the way. It's the same internal stuff.
But you know, we have TWRP custom recovery. Make a backup, wipe, flash CM, see for yourself. If you don't like it, just restore your stock backup from TWRP image. Everything is then back as you have it now, nothing lost.
IF you don't like CM, try Resurrection Remix. We have choices. (You have to go over to the other Quark XDA forum to find that one. The CM dev was just nice enough to post threads in both forums. We were one big forum until September but got split. Both custom ROMs work with all Quarks.)
There's also a custom kernel by the same dev as Resurrection Remix, based on CM's kernel.
The same dev also gave us official TWRP.
the moto driver provides the crystal talk voice enhancement may be one of the possible reason.

I personally didn't notice any differences but I don't know much about that HD voice enhancement stuff. The only audio issue I've experienced is my Bluetooth only accepts calls now 50% of the time.
I haven't gone through the trouble to try clearing caches yet though.
I noticed with both cm12.1 and rr that my Snapchat video quality was horrible, it picked up way too much extra noise, I feel like this may coincide with the Calling voice quality

I haven't noticed any difference between the CDMA voice on either the factory ROM, nor CyanogenMod. Of course, at this point, I can't comment on the VoLTE side of the baseband, as CM doesn’t support it, yet.
Sent from my DROID Turbo with Tapatalk. Now with that CyanogenMod goodness.
Hi,
Hopefully I'm posting this in the right place. If not, please let me know.
I just bought a Mi Mix last week and am wondering which ROM is best for me. I had been using a Nexus 6 with Pure Nexus which works very well for my needs. Given that, and the following requirements, which ROM would be best for the Mi Mix?
1. Double tap to wake.
2. Not MIUI (I really don't like it).
3. Stable (I'd like to load once and not have to flash new ROMs very often).
4. Nougat 7.1.2
5. Lots of customization options.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, welcome to the yard.
Simply all your criterions are telling like you'll get what you want by Resurrection Remix rom. Second shot perhaps should be the AOSiP rom.

Right now I think AOSiP is the most rounded of them all right now. Just my opinion though.
AICP. It works best for me, has all the customizations you need but isn't as overloaded as RR.
You dont want miui, but sadly epicrom is the fastest in my experience. I tried rr it is recommended.
I loaded Resurrection Remix last night and it was working well until I tried to run the SquareHome launcher. It kept crashing so I then tried Lineage but it went into a reboot loop shortly after the initial start around where you enter the wireless information. So then I flashed AOSiP and it also went into a reboot loop at about the same point. I wiped everything each time. So at this point I flashed RR again just to see if it would load without rebooting and it worked fine. Fortunately I was able to figure out why the SquareHome launcher wasn't working so it's all good now too. Everything with RR seems to be working fine so far but I haven't used it very much yet.
However, I'm curious why the others caused the reboot loop problem. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Update: I have the YouTube slowness and audio problem so I'm guessing my firmware needs to be updated. Could that have caused the reboot issue with AOSiP and Lineage also?
Thanks for all the help!

Not sure, but the video slowness and audio problem is caused by the dated firmware, try flashing the 7.7.20 firmware found in the RR thread.
I will also recommend you to try ViperOS , it doesnt have much support but the rom is smooth with great battery life (compared to other AOSP/Lineage based roms in my experience) and the performance is very good with no need of a custom kernel.

Thanks. I've downloaded ViperOS and may give it a try. Updating firmware did fix the video slowness and audio problems.

I have tried every rom for the Mi Mix and the ViperOs is the perfect fit. It's probably the closet to Pure Nexus. I get 8 hours screen time easily, very smooth and very customizable, I love it

I've been having a couple weird things with RR (intermittent proximity sensor and a couple random reboots) so I flashed ViperOs. It seems pretty awesome so far. Thanks!
ViperOs is awesome. Unfortunately I've decided to sell the Mi Mix. I've tried but I just can't get past the audio quality from the 'earpiece' during calls.
Anyone interested in a good deal on a basically brand new Mi Mix 6/256? U.S. only please. Thanks.

Sadly, yes. As I mentioned, I just can't get past the earpiece limitations. My hearing isn't the best and I'm having problems with hearing and understanding callers compared to other phones I have. I really love the phone (that screen! and that battery life!) but I need to use it as a phone which just isn't working for me.

Fair enough to leave. I even have had an another(basic) phone to make calls from it.

Damn, is the sound that bad during calls? I'm in the process of setting mine up. Waiting the 72 hours to unlock my bootloader. Which rom did you find to suit your needs the best? An how much you asking for your mix?

It may not be that bad for everyone. My hearing isn't the greatest so I'm sure that factors in. The best ROM I used in the short time I was using it is ViperOS. I've got it on Swappa right now for $415 but that's a little flexible.
Thanks.

+1 for RR.
I was exactly just like you, came from N6 and I am happy with this ROM.
