Heating up more compared to OP 3??

As mentioned in some review, I feel this phone is heating up little more compared to OP 3 while doing normal tasks also...anybody faced it?

I have not but I don't do anything other then a couple videos, browsing, emails, rss etc. Nothing like games on my devices

It seems to be a trend now. The more powerful phones we get more warmth will be felt. I'm rocking a Z3+ till I pick up my 3T on Monday, and let me tell you my z3+ used to reach 80+ °c easily in an ambient 20°c room. Once I got a kernel and under-clocked it's manageable now. But I'm 100% sure you're device is fine. Like I said more powerful and a metal case will warm up a bit but also passively cool faster. I used to use this benchmark tool as it's the only one apart from geekbench I trust. It measures and tests actual use rather than synthetic loads.

Bad performance and other good/bad things (P10 Plus)

I have been using P10 Plus (6/128 GB) for a day, and I am trying really hard to like it. I haven't found all the good/bad points yet but the list of bad things is already kind of outweighing the list of good things. Were my expectations really just too high?
These are really just my opinions, and you are free to disagree. Even I might change my mind if there are really good reasons to!
I might as well add that paid about $860 (in Norway) for my P10 Plus while Galaxy S8+ costs "slightly more" (about $1,000). I just feel like I got so little in return for the price I paid.
I have to decide by tomorrow anyway whether to keep this device or return it, and I am currently leaning towards returning it.
Thanks for any tips, advices, opinions, etc.
Good things:
Responsive fingerprint reader on the front side, unlocks screen pretty much instantly.
Has a nice shape (like an iPhone 7). No annoying sharp edges except at the bottom holes for connectors, where I support the device with my pinky finger.
Lots of camera settings.
My device luckily has UFS 2.1.
Pretty good WiFi speed (measured more than 200 Mbps during internet speed test).
The DAC's quality is okay (not very good). A little bit of noise when using my sensitive in-ear headphones, but it's very bearable. This is only a "good" point because it's an upgrade from my old phone.
Bad things:
I already found some sluggish menus on day one.
Somewhat bad performance when taking photos and shooting videos, even playing back videos I captured is somewhat choppy.
The device gets pretty hot during "normal" (in my opinion light) use, and really hot while charging and during "heavy" (in my opinion normal) use.
Seems like the battery drains more quickly than I expected as well (larger battery does not make it much or any better than P10) so that I still need to bring an extra battery with me if I intend to use mobile data and GPS.
The swiping on the fingerprint reader is a bit of a hit and miss because it might register a tap which means "back" (or exit).
Photos taken and saved as JPEG look bad. RAW images look quite a bit better but it takes seconds to save each image.
My GFXBench result is pretty bad compared to other devices.
Nitpicking:
The edge of the screen protector is so annoying I want to take it off. Note: If you do it, you might want to apply oleophobic coating.
I wish the fingerprint sensor indentation was a bit less deep, because it makes the swiping motion feel less comfortable. The screen protector is probably most of the reason though.
I was never able to transfer app data (only apps themselves) from my old device using any method suggested by Huawei. The thing that did work was a backup/restore using adb.
USB 2 is pretty slow after getting used to USB 3.
The device sometimes thinks that I am using a knuckle gesture when I am using the tip of my finger.

sometimes very laggy also. And some apps not compatible with the camera.

Turns out that I am stuck with this device due to the shop's no-return policy on phones. I might as well begin training my mind to like the device. Won't feel guilty about rooting and trying custom ROMs now either.

Camera send not so good to me, maybe I don't know how to use it

Pretty much this phone is unusable due these 2 things, battery life is poor as AF, and from my perspective, Huawei messed up EMUI 5.1 really hard.
Probably an update would fix it, but we don't have ETA yet.
I will return back the P10 Plus because I think is not worth it, and I will buy a Mate 9 Pro that is virtually the same device, but battery life is so much better.

@nougn Which firmware are you on? In terms of battery life the phone may not be the best, but from my experience its also not bad either. 6 hours DOT should be possible unless you are a heavy gamer. However what you said about the device getting hot that does sound like it may have faulty hardware, I'd be careful with that. You should grab an app monitoring CPU and battery temperatures. If you come to the conclusion that the device is getting warmer than it should I'd contact Huawei on the matter. What I find most bizarre is that you say the performance is laggy at times, I never experienced even just the slightest lag no matter what I do, it is smooth as silk in every situation. Maybe another indication for faulty hardware.......? On a side note: the price you paid seems really high, a lot of commercial seller on ebay offer it for a lot less than that... but anyhow if you really wanted to get rid of the device you could always sell it on ebay or something, no? This device always works in high temperatures, and is really easy for it to get hot. Use the camera more than 3 minutes and it will start to feel uncomfortable on hand.
I had the same experience, poor battery life and device most of the time hot. I checked the temperatures and is around 30°C on stand by, and after some minutes of WhatsApp and news, it was reaching 40°C, which is not normal at all, when my previous phone was around 18°C on stand by and 25°C in normal usage.
I'm used to stick with cold devices and is one of the first things I noticed when I used this device, and is a pretty common problem among many users. Most of the people would say that is only "warm", but I had the Mate 9 as well, with the same specs, and trust me, it was an ice cube the whole time.

One has to keep in mind though that temperatures like that are impossible to reach in summer (unless its a very cold summer), the device can never be cooler than the air surrounding it

Well, I'm talking about my room, which has air conditioning, and I just bought the P10 Plus and today I returned it back.
Problem solved, I got my money back, and I'm trying to see which phone to get, but pretty much I don' t like what I see in the market now.

The standby drain is crazy and as you said the phone gets really hot when using the camera more than a few minutes.
Also one more problem is when the phone reach certain temperature the wide aperture effect in the gallery will stop working..
It's a pity since I like this phone in many ways and the camera is great.
But if Huawei don't fix it (very) soon i may be "forced" to sell it and get another one..
Almost regret that I sold my old Mate 8..

Today I returned my P10 Plus, for me there's no excuse to pay so much for a phone that has basic problems.
I will see if I get a Mate 9 Pro or any other phone, but I'm kind of picky when getting a new device.

Sorry for the late response. I have been traveling for the past few days.
I decided to bring this phone with me on vacation to Japan where it is currently very humid and it feels like 33+ degrees C (91+ degrees F) in the sun. Trying to use mobile data, GPS and Google Maps is not exactly pleasant for my hand. The worst part is trying to take some photos because the device's temperature gets uncomfortably high for my hand. Will try to measure the temperatures next time I go out!
I am also really glad that I brought an extra battery, although the output of the extra battery (per port) is just enough (2.4A) to keep the device's battery percentage stable while using mobile data and GPS (goes up when idle).
I also guessed hardware defect, but it now seems like I am not the only one with problems. I really hope that Huawei can fix some things in the software, including the heat issue.

I understand your point, but still having AMOLED display means nothing in 2017. You can see the HTC U11 with LCD and has pretty goddamn battery life. You can have the normal Mate 9 with IPS and also has a really nice battery life. Right now screen technologies are really mature and it doesn't influence much (or at all) what kind is on a phone.

Came from S8, I used it for a couple of months and now Im using P10 Plus.
Im more than happy now with P10+.

I have had my P10 Plus for about 2 months now and I can tell you I get around 5 hours of SOT with 1-2 of gaming. The battery stays at 100% for about 15 minutes regardless what I do and then begins to drop. Somehow form 70% downwards it starts to really slow its discharge rate. You might worry about this but the honest truth is that I can make it at the end of each day (around midnight) with around 15-20% battery left. For me this is more than enough as I recharge my phone every night.
I would suggest you stop worrying about your phone dying on you and just start using it. Also use Phone Manager once a day and you'll be good to go.

The processor is indeed SD435, not SD430 like you quoted.

A great looking device with stunning display and also fits in one hand quite easily

I bought one. Is very cute. But it hasnt notification led. When I receive a whatsapp, how can q6 notifies me? It hasnt ambient display.

A little bit but less than my previous moto x play.
I dont play games. Only web browsing, youtube,...

1. Processor struggles to deliver for the display. Lot of during while using Twitter and similar apps that requires lot of scrolling.
2. Lot of heating doing the above.
3. No quick charge.
4. Speaker is in the bottom; ring sound gets muted if kept on soft surfaces like sofa or bed.
Given the price point, all of these should have been addressed (SD450 for 1, 2 & 3 and proper placing of speakers).
Finger print is also missed by many, though I don't miss it.
Also No NFC in India

What I dislike about the phone is that LG doesn't seem to care about it anymore.
It was released not too long ago, but an Android 8.0 update seems to be really unlikely.
I didn't find anything on the internet in this regard... does anyone else now, if an update is planned or asked LG about it?

I have experience with LG phone from around a year. I developed ROMs for LG K10 with help of other developers.
Forget about updates when you buy a LG phone. Forget, security patches. LG K10 got only 1 security patch update and was stuck at Lollipop.
Don't buy a LG phone ever again.

This phone isn't even rootable (at least my model version is afaik), sad thing is i'm stuck with this phone for 2 years (got one from a postpaid plan). never getting another lg phone again.

Someone sad that this phone is no more supported with updates. I have security pach from february. Love this phone. No issue at all. It will get 8.0. Be sure. Also someone sad that he's stuck on lollipop on k10, and that phone is on marshmallow. Problem is country where you bought a phone and that's all. Playing mortal kombat x, without sd card, and it's not buggy or heating.

Love this phone, the display is beautiful. I'm using this phone from January until now, for multitasking and watch movie or YouTube it's okay, battery not drain to fast. But, if you use to play heavy game like Rules of Survival or PUBG the battery drain so fast because the phone start to heat and it's normal in my opinion.

agree. in my testing the past week the screen is the real star of this phone. battery is incredible but we can thank sd 435 soc for that.

The phone is beautiful, the gloss back and it's design is wonderful. The only 3 downsides of this phone is that it has a pretty weak CPU considering it is not that cheap of a device.
The sencond thing: the speaker is placed like in the K10, and the third downside is....that I can't play PUBG properly...yup
But the device itself is really wonderful. I just can't wait for the devs to find a way on how to unlock the bootloader and then we can make some progress in this bit...
I guess they don't wanna void everyone's warranties for now.

Try this to make PUBG (or other game) little bit smooth to play on this phone.
Open settings -> battery & power saving -> select game battery saver -> select custom -> configure PUBG to normal resolution or low resolution.
I hope this steps will help to solve the problem

I like the way the phone looks, thats why i bought it (previous phone was a g2). But man no custom rom support, cuz bootloader is (still) locked??? If i knew this in advance, i would heave chosen the p20, smart (Huawei) or g5+ (motorola).

The ROM update that LG stated it would come in May, in the end, the update will probably launch on November, latest in early 2019.
Quite an embarassing point with LG, I know. They deliver the phone without that much updates, thinking they are pretty confident with themselves that the phone is very optimized, but in the end, they have added so much bloatware to the ROM that you can't actually breath with it!
Also, the method of unlocking bootloader isn't even found yet, nor will it be revealed for the next 2 years! ( unless it is revealed by our great devs at XDA )
So no deeper thinking for devs yet!
Overall, the phone is stunning by it's design, the impressive display that some times has problems with sharpening the *CRISPY* details leading to oversharpening the image.
Also, it's processor isn't that impressive for it's price after all, Snapdragon 435 isn't that enough. And 300-400 dollars price point?! Nah, nobody would even think about buying it unless because of it's design... <3<3<3 ( well, the price has lowered where it should be, LG has always some crazy prices when released)
The GBs of RAM are enough, but I think the CPU is helping with the bottlenecking in certain tasks, for example when applying the 16:9 resolution to a game/application that uses all the power, which for this phone isn't enough than for watching some HQ videos and so on.
But we love it! We sure do! ( I think? )

General Snapdragon 888 vs Exynos 2100 after latest updates

I know there are already a few threads for the same discussion ,
But I am making this thread for a healthy discussion on what's better between Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 after the latest software updates for both models .
There are youtube reviews that are contradictory to each other
1) Mrwhosetheboss says Snapdragon is way better and Exynos is heating like crazy.
Also in camera sd>exynos
2) The tech chap on the other hand says Exynos to be faster and cooler .
Let's discuss

I am planning to buy the s21 ultra over the OnePlus 9 pro just because I am getting it at the same price as OnePlus 9 pro ,
Also the software on OnePlus is always going to be buggy and an update to fix one issue will create more bugs .

After my experience with the Exynos, I'm far more inclined to believe the Tech Chap. I've had no issues with thermal throttling, and my phone sits most of the time at between 28 and 32 degrees when being used under normal circumstances (browsing, light camera use etc). I've also run the benchmarks he ran and got pretty much the same results. I'm very happy with it.
I strongly suspect that boss geezer just had bad luck and picked up an Exynos model with a bad SOC. The difference between the two is he didn't buy another to rule that out.

Like both Youtubers in this thread, I'm in England so it's not hot at the moment.
Ambient temp makes a difference, but my experience of mobile phones in the UK over the last 25+ years, not massively so.

I live in a area where the temperatures are like 40°C for like 8 months and 10°C for 4 months ..
At 40°C ambient temps even apple iphones break their sweat and throttle.

You say even Apple iPhones but they're dogs**t when it comes to thermal dissipation, in particular the more recent ones.
All I can say is that this phone is no worse than any others I've had when it comes to thermals, and seems to be better than most of them.

After I contemplated a lot, I went for it and purchased the EXYNOS version as I live in Europe and the Snapdragon seems to be Single SIM, so no point ordering it from Amazon.
Mrwhostheboss either had a faulty unit or at the time of his video, the update he put wasn't enough to fix the software issues.
Mine works fine, no overheating (gets a bit warm when doing heavier tasks, ~22c ambient room temps), no camera problems or glitches, all seems good. The camera quality is pretty fine too, although it did definitely improve further after I installed the last update. When I tested the camera out of the box, it was all weird.
Battery life for me is quite fine as well. At the time of writing this message I got SOT 1h45m and battery is at 78%. Plenty of apps installed, Dual SIMs active. AOD active.
I also have the Dr. Ketan ROM with root, AFWall and etc. So I slightly debloated the useless stuff.
I am satisfied with the EXYNOS, and although I have no way to test them next to each other, I'm sure that If the SNAP is better in some ways, it is NOT in others, like NO DUAL SIM.... And for sure if there is anything left to fix on the EXYNOS, they will fix it with the upcoming updates.
But again, if you buy an EXYNOS, make sure you do it right. Start it, install all your apps, make sure you update it to the latest firmware version and then start testing it. If it has problems, factory reset it and return it for a new one.

The camera quality is pretty fine too, although it did definitely improve further after I installed the last update. When I tested the camera out of the box, it was all weird.
Battery life for me is quite fine as well. At the time of writing this message I got SOT 1h45m and battery is at 78%. Plenty of apps installed, Dual SIMs active. AOD active.
I also have the Dr. Ketan ROM with root, AFWall and etc. So I slightly debloated the useless stuff.
I am satisfied with the EXYNOS, and although I have no way to test them next to each other, I'm sure that If the SNAP is better in some ways, it is NOT in others, like NO DUAL SIM.... And for sure if there is anything left to fix on the EXYNOS, they will fix it with the upcoming updates.
But again, if you buy an EXYNOS, make sure you do it right. Start it, install all your apps, make sure you update it to the latest firmware version and then start testing it. If it has problems, factory reset it and return it for a new one.

In india there is nothing as return ..
Once paid the device is yours till it has some major issues and they are just repaired ,
Unfortunately We cannot return it for a refund here in india .
That is why thinking twice before buying .

I have no overheating problems with my Exynos unit. Phone idles at around 25-30degC.

I had the s21 ultra 512 and i sold it coz i have literally watched every single review out there and was too worried i might have been scammed or made the wrong choice.
After talking to some ppl here i bought it again and this time i made sure i cleared my search history lol and never ever to watch a thing.
It is not SD888 but it is close, it has good battery, cameras are barely any difference between them. If you game a lot you should really just buy a different phone just for gaming.
The screen is phenomenal.
Bro i live in Kuwait, temps here reach 55°....until now i have not experienced any extreme heating issues.
My advice to you, don't listen to anything, the device is amazing...yes it lacks behind the SD888 but for me it's the better pick.. i get warranty for a year and a trade on later or i can even sell it and not lose while the imported is basically non sellable here.
So weigh things out and decide, once you decide do not regret. Do not hesitate it's just a phone, if you have a slight doubt avoid it and wait for a different phone.

Camera has improved on the exynos with updates, personally I still feel low light video and photos are just ok, but anything in decent light is great, and I don't have anything other than a pixel 3 to compare to, so not a fair fight as the camera tech on that is old.
In regards to the video, mr whos the boss was using antutu for temperatures and it's well known that at that time it couldn't read exynos temps properly. When I had antutu, it showed around 40 degrees, but CPU monitor was around 25 degrees
I've got the exynos and had no real issues to date, battery life is sometimes great, sometime ok, but more than enough to do me from morning to night with my usage. Other than that can't complain at all

Should wait for the xiaomi's launch today?

That temp thing with Antutu makes sense, I was worried when I first got my phone as it was listing my CPU temperature in the low 50s but then I installed CPU Monitor and it showed it was around 30 degrees. Maybe MrWhosTheBoss should have done a bit more research.
It's funny reading the comments on that video. Thousands of people talking about the S21 Ultra being rubbish on Exynos without having the first clue what they're talking about. It goes to show how a badly made video can really effect how a phone is perceived.

Exactly and there is me researching this from a week before buying it .
Also tried to stress the camera on the demo unit at a samsung store , but it was warm to touch but not at all hot ..
By the way , as OnePlus markets their 9 pro with 5 layer cooling system , how's the cooling on s21 ultra?

JerryRigEverything did a teardown, but it's the SD varient. I'm not sure if the cooling solution on Exynos differs.

The Samsung is much more aggressive with its thermal throttling than the mi 11 (A good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want in a phone), don't know about the oneplus or how effective it's cooling system actually is (could just be a gimmick/branding, but I don't know).
I would say from what I've seen, s21u has better battery, genuine adaptive refresh, marginally photos cameras but much more versatile camera array, better software.
Mi11 better charging and sustained gaming
Early oneplus reviews have middling battery life, but an educated guess that they haven't enabled the variable refresh yet on the pro, as it seems to last the same amount of time as the base model.
In all honesty, if you aren't sure, wait a month or so for the 'long term' reviews, then you will get a better idea of the final product

I am getting the s21 u e2100 today .. let's hope I get a good silicon compared to what some people have got

I seriously have a feeling that both versions of the phone are nearly identical in performance and camera quality. The primary reason why we see so many threads regarding heat issues, app crash issues or battery issues are not necessarily due to the versions of the phone that are being used (Exynos or Snapdragon)... But instead, I think that this is mainly due to the fact that a lot of Samsung's phone sales are to people who aren't very tech friendly....at all...
I mean, think of Apple's iPhone market. What percentage of their customers are tech geniuses who know everything about complete device care and optimization? I'd say, near me in the US, maybe about 3-5% of their customers... And with that said, you have to keep in mind that Samsung is the most Apple equivalent company in sales numbers for Android devices in the US. So probably only about 1-2% of their phone customers actually know what the heck they're doing.
So (internally thought lol) truth be told, I don't think one variant is better than the other. I just think that we need to keep in mind the fact that the Samsung phone market is packed to the gills with customers who don't know much at all regarding the technology that's used or how it works/can be optimized or made better. Luckily for us on this particular thread, we probably don't run into the aforementioned issues as we're likely all people who actually know how to use, care for and optimize a damn smart phone lol.

The US isn't really a particularly cold area. It's just a much bigger area. So there are certainly some states where the temperature stays cold for a while... But there are tons of other places where it stays over 23°C all year round (and a few states where it stays above 33°C all year). So overall, I still believe that these issues are just coming up due to a severe lack of knowledge =(. But the good thing for you is that you actually appear to know what the deal is, hence why you're here on XDA. Thanks for being here =). But ya see what I mean? You were aware of the slightly warmer temperature of the S21U and you were aware of the fact that you live in a hot area. Therefore, you're not constantly complaining about the phone being borked out of the box, but instead, you're looking for potential solutions. Kudos!

That's allright ,
But imo apple is from day 1 producing good chips and their optimization is top notch ,
And samsung in US is just offering Snapdragon .
That's the main reason people are not complaining about both , and they don't care what are the specs in their phone .
Also US is a relatively cold area so not much is going around throttling issues .
I live in india where highest temps reach 45°C , where the real problem of thermal throttling arise .
So I care much about these things .

Question Has heating issue of this phone been fixed?

I'm considering whether to buy this phone because how compact and elegant it is.
Thing is the heating issue I've heard of is holding me back. I've heard that the heating issue of Zenfone 8 has been fixed over the last 2 updates but I'm not quite sure about it. Can anyone confirm this? Does intense use (such as 4k video shooting or gaming) make it very hot?
And I wonder, in case it has been fixed, is the Snapdragon 888 CPU performance still the same? I'm worrying that Asus might have lower the CPU frequency or such so that the CPU generates less heat...

Intense gaming and 4k video recording will still make the phone hot. After several minutes of 4k recording camera app will close because of overheating.

What? Maybe in Marrakesch that's true. I just did 5min 8k recording to check that nonsense statement. The phone got warm under the camera. Did not close nor did it give any warning.
Are there any phones that do not get hot during intense gaming??
I am using the provided case and the warmth is there but nothing untouchable nor risky.
I assume it depends where you live. In very hot countries you may get the warning that's it's getting hot.

So you live in the same climate as I do. My phone gave me a warning on recording once, when in direct sunlight at around 34C. It has been after around 15min of recording and cooling it in shade or water instantly allowed me to record more.
You say that the camera closes after few minutes of recording. So this happens to you often? Not in a forum - how many times did you have it?
I own flagship phones (LG, Huawei, Asus) since many years and they all get warm under some conditions. Never had any issues because of that.

So it happened to me 3 times and I switched the video recording to FHD 60fps after that.
As I said, I really like the phone, for my usage it is really good and I am sacrificing the thermals for the small form factor and performance. I anyway rarely record videos in general, so I am not at a loss.
For comparison on my previous pixel 3 during summer when the phone is in the car under direct sunlight and android auto is connected I would get the "phone is getting hot" once or twice a year. With the Zenfone 8 it never happened and it even almost doesn't get hot at all under the same circumstances, probably due to a more powerful SoC. But it does get pretty warm during gaming, I think without a case it would be impossible to hold the phone

Think carefully about buying this phone. I had a problem with a dying phone and it just came back om repair yesterday. It works, but the ASUS support leaves a lot to be desired. It heats up similarly like before, but what is disturbing only in one place - next to the camera. Previously, heat was distributed over the entire surface of device. Next thing, on sides of the back, you can see that the phone was opened. Previously the color at the edges was uniformly black, now the edges are kind of transparent and there are dust spots underneath them. Premium phone ... please ... my phone is not looking good anymore just because the manufacturer made a mistake at the production stage and it had to be repaired .... and something that annoyed me, when I was looking at the phone, I noticed that a few small particles of dust had fallen under the glass with the cameras. They are not too big to create problems with the pictures, but they are there and you can see them. I am slightly disappointed that the phone returned from an authorized service with something like that.

I have the phone about two months now, normal heat during random bit heavy tasks.
It heats a bit while playing PUBG in highest graphic setting but nothing crazy, you can play full hour with slight heat, I point fan to my phone and hands all ok.
After installing LinageOS I keep battery saver on all the time and phone doesn't heat and battery last all day long, got about 8 hours of display time (but didn't play any game all casual apps/shopping reading and music, some YouTube).
Seems like the 888 chip got more power than needed, I wish Asus make same compact phone with Dimensity or 7xx chips, that would more suits the type of people uses this phone, I think.
