Hello all
I've got an idea. Since I didn't find any kind of thread about this subject, I was thinking to create one where you all can share your temperatures and what are you doing or using when you measure your oneplus 5 temps.
You can install CPU-Z or Aida64. There are a lot of parameters but I think the most important is the battery and a sort of average of the others.
For instance, I'm using XDA app to write this post and have Instagram and Facebook messenger opened in background.
My temps are:
-> battery 31.8°
-> average of the rest: 36°/37°
After this moment I kept those apps opened and started to watch an Anime stream on kissanime with chrome.
->battery 34°
-> average of the rest 39°/40°
Have fun
And what is the point of this? BTW without ambient temperature all collected data are unusable.
I dont see the point either. Anything below 50°C is to be considered low anyway.
I understand your points.
The idea was to have something where people can share their temps a see if there is or not a possibility for their phone to overheating.
I might be a little apprehensive about my temps, sometimes I think that my phone is a little hotter than it should be.
However, if you think that this thread is bad, I kindly ask to somebody with permissions to delete it.
Ahh my ambient temperature when I measure those values was about 22°/23°
There are so many variables, that you can't say what is normal temperature and what temperature it should have. Do you hold it in your hand? You will get higher temp. Is sun shining on your phone? Higher temp. Do you often use camera? Higher temp.... Unless you encounter extremes, you can't decide what temperature is normal. If you think, that something is wrong, it's better to start with collecting better stats of battery consumption, because excesive heat is consequence of another problem.

Hello guys!
This is my first time posting here, so if I'm breaking any rules please let me know
Anyway, I'm looking to get a new Android device and I'm think I'm going to get the new Sony Xperia Z. The only problem is that I can't get a real device to test it (for just like 30 minutes). Anyway, I've watched a bunch of reviews and read many articles so I good to go, except for one thing - I want to know how much the phone heats when it's running at 100%.
I've already seen some threads here on XDA, but they are mostly subjective (temperatures are mentioned as warm and hot). I would like to get more objective result. If you own a Xperia Z device, you can help me - it won't take too much of your time
Anyway, here is what I'm proposing as a more objective test:
1) Download and install StabilityTest i System Tuner. You can get them in the Play Store.
2) Close all running apps. Run System Tuner. Open Settings -> Recording preferences -> Items to record and check CPU frequency and CPU temperature.
3) Go to the main menu of the System Tuner app and click icon named "Start" (upper right corner). Now the app is logging the in CPU frequency and temperature. Click on CPU icon and not your current temperature.
4) Leave System Tuner running in the background and open StabilityTest. Click on the first button (Classic Stability test). Leave it running for at least 20 minutes.
5) After at least 20 minutes have passed, you can close StabilityTest and stop recording in the System Tuner. The log will be saved on you SD card in the folder pwm/recordings. Please attach it in you post
Please post your battery percentage before you have started StabilityTest and after you've closed it. Also, please post whether you did the test with you phone on or off the charger.
Thanks!

You don't need all this benchmarks because its common sense really. I have the device, on normal operations e.g. browsing, videos etc.. it doesn't get hot, but a bit warm near the rear camera. But, if you do intensive tasks e.g. playing a game e.g. nova 3 etc.. then it gets a bit more hot, but not so much to burn your hands. This is normal because think about the horse power this phone has in a slim form factor and all the heat that gets generated without any cooling fans. Its normal but its not normal if it goes beyond the range of operations, which in my case, I have not noticed. I had a Motorola Droid the keyboard version, that device got extremely hot and it was really uncomfortable to hold.
As a user, I am very pleased with this smartphone and ofcoz it has drawbacks then again no phone is perfect. Hope this helps what you looking for without benchmarks

Transitioning from a low end HTC Incredible S, I found it very unusual how the phone got warm by just going through the user interface.
then i ran qualcomm trepn profiler and it showed that my 1st cpu core was doing anything between 1ghz and 1.5ghz at any given time.
possibly fixed with a kernel tweak?

It should be common sense, but I've read about Xperia Z on many pages. And some users say that it only gets warm, others say it's hot when gaming and some say that it's running too hot. Maybe some of them do have defective units, so this test would be also great for comparison between units. Can you run the test? You don't even need to run it for 20 minutes, 10 should be enough. Or if you won't/can't do the test, can you at least just check in the System Tuner if Xperia Z has CPU temperature sensor - if it doesn't have one then I can stop searching for people who own it.
P.S. Can somebody say if Xperia Z is running hotter or colder than Samsung Galaxy S2?
hi
What is the normal device temperature that you see.. I m not talking abt the battery temperature.. I am talking about the device temperature ...
I am checking the device temperature using the cpu temp app
The normal temperature that I noticed when I got up in the morning was 32c
It is with wifi ON and brightness set to auto and normal 2g
after some minor use the temp now is 40-45c
If I do a 4k recording for 2 minutes.. It becomes really hot and temp goes to 70c
If I play a game the temp goes to 55-60c
While running antutu benchmark it restartEd once... He temp was around 65 for some time
while charging the temp is around 50c?
The device screen really feels hot , even more then the leather back
So are these things normal?
Or is this some hardware problems
I have already checked the battery stats and don't see anything unusual hogging the battery
I have not installed any apps.. Just the ones for speedtest, antutu, cup temp etc
Awaiting replies
Anyone... Any replies... At least the average device temperature
So many views...but no replies...
Ran antuntu and it capped at about 62C. Chill and uninstall the temp apps and use your phone normally.
thanks for the reply.. also can you check the temp while shooting at 4K for couple of minutes?
There is no such normal device temp. The device temp depends on the battery temp. If its between 10-15° c above the battery temp. Then its pretty normal in running conditions ... If the battery temperature rises then automatically the device temp will rise ... In most of the devices its between 40-45°c .. The normal device temp. And 1 more thing the device temp also depends on the type of ui u r using
Sent from my LG-D410 using XDA Free mobile app
You just said there is no normal, but the normal is 40-45°. It also depends on the temperature of your surroundings. I love in southern California and have to mount my phone in front of my air conditioning because our summers were up to 44c this year. I once had my Nexus 5 shut off from heat when it wasn't in front of the air.
Anyways. You're fine buddy, processors throttle at a certain temp and also shut down automatically around 75-80C.
i heard that the huawei p9 has their unique overheat protection feature which if the phone gets hot the phone will lower its performance level. is there any way to disable this, my phone gets slow even if its not that hot. i cant play games for too long because it lags after a few mins of playing. i hope huawei makes this feature optional

Its not a unique feature of the P9, all the CPUs (meaning Desktops computers, Laptops computers, Phones, Tablets, etc.) and also all GPUs (Nvidia cards, AMD cards, MALI, Rouge, etc.), but in general all electronic components will lower their performance if they get too hot. This is called "Thermal Throttling". All components have a maximum working temperature, if you get close to that temperature you might experience glitches or artifacts, nothing permanent, but if you get past the Maximum temperature, you will experience heavy glitching and artifacting, crashes and heavy instability of the system, causing permanent damage too.
So to answer your question, no, you cannot disable the overheating safety feature, and there will also won't be an implementation of a switch for this feature, simply because it would kill your device.
The only solution is to better cool the phone, or reduce the heat, the first is not really a great solution, the second one would require downvolting/downclocking both the CPU and GPU, both of which require a Custom Kernel. As of right now, there are none, so you are stuck the way you are.

thank you for your response, but my p9 antutu benchmark score is 99k to 65k real quick when performing the 2nd try. isnt that too much? btw when i downclock my phone does it reduce the overheating but still give the same performance?

Yes, that is a huge drop, but mine behaves similarly. When you downclock your phone you reduce the clock of the processor, which means it needs less electricity to work, which also means that it generates less heat. But reducing the clock of the processor means reducing its performance too, so no, it wouldn't keep the same performance.

i havent seen any phone that lowers its brightness when overheating, but the p9 does this and then lowers its performance sometimes even if my phone isnt that hot, it looks like a feature to me but im not sure, i hope that this is really a feature cuz if it is, theres a chance to fix it
I have noticed the Xiaomi Mix has some persistent software thermal throttling after a short period of time.
I ran the same test on a OnePlus 3T and noticed this throttling issue is not present.
It's possible the temps to start throttling are too low on the Mix.
Is there any way to modify or increase these throttle limits?
I know this has been done before but I cannot load the Thermal conf file in /system/ etc / thermal-engine.conf
Can we replace the file with something else ?
The OnePlus forum members released several versions of the file with different throttling temps. Can we use these files or make our own.
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oneplus2-how-to-fix-thermal-throttling.417108/
Did you ever get any further with this? My phone idles at ~35C. I read a review that said throttling begins at ~40C so I get throttled when I do virtually anything.
I've only had this thing 2 days and the performance has been worse than my old Nexus 6 because the cores keep getting capped very low. I was copying some backed up files over WiFi from my PC. It was lots of small files so it was running for 20 mins or so. When I was trying to do other stuff in the meantime it started to get really sluggish. I used to do exactly the same thing on my N6 and I could never tell that file copying was running in the background. I checked Kernel Auditor and it was showing temps ~50C and the cores were all being capped around 5-600MHz.
I've tried the stock ROM (stable and beta) and EPIC, and Lineage/RR. It seems to be a bit worse on the latter two (Antutu won't go above 100k, but it's like 140k on the MIUI ones) for some reason, but it's an issue on all of them.

I have absolutely gotten further here I have managed to get throttling completely disabled actually.
The highest temp the CPU got to was 42 degrees Celsius after running Dolphin for 2 hours straight.
There is no need for thermal throttling on this device at all, hardware does a good enough job clearing the heat.
To stop the thermal throttling you need root access.
Use ES File Explorer from the play store and enable root access
Navigate to root and look for Folder system/etc and find file called thermal*******.*** ( I don't remember what it's called )
Cut this file from this location and paste it into another directory. I moved it to the sdcard for easy access. This way you can move it back if you do not like the results.
I have not experienced any overheating with this, also the battery doesn't drain like crazy. Performance is greatly improved with speed matching the Snapdragon 835 in a few scenarios.
Oh yeah restart the phone after you move the file so it can register the changes. Clock the cores appropriately with Kernal Auditor to make sure it can run at full blast when it needs to. On demand is way faster than interactive.
Cheers. I actually read the links you posted and renamed the conf file. After a reboot it was flying. The problem isn't so much the throttling, it's that mine idles at ~35C already, so it was getting capped when I did virtually anything. If I run Antutu 2-3 times in a row and check the temps in Kernel Auditor it can be in the low 60s. Using other temp apps (CPUTemp) it only shows about 45C tops.
It definitely does feel pretty damn warm since I don't use a case. but I'd love to know what the 'real' temp was. I tend to believe the lower one since I got the 45C warning when using EPIC and that's exactly what the app said. it was.
My Antutu scores increased substantially too. I was sometimes dipping down to 80-90k but I regularly get ~140k now, even 160k once. I know not to go by those scores but when I could never even get above 100k it was a concern.

Yeah I'm thinking Xiaomi severely limits the thermal threshold to improve battery performance.
It's kinda all they care about in Japan for some reason.
Makes for some great performance improvements without the thermal settings being active.
This setting change is almost necessary of you need some heavy work done.
Glad you were able to get this changed.
i remove thermal_8896_blabla.conf...
Honestly device become too hot for me.... backplate change during my game (Battle Bay), very different sensation... reinstall immediatly *.conf... Finally i have decent perf and cold phone and very good battery life... no more...

I think our best solution would be a modified .conf file that increases the thermal threshold as opposed to completely removing it.
Until this solution is available then this is our only choice.
i agree... i think with a ROM kitchen mayve this fil can be readable... anyway @ this point, we can only hope somebody dectypt this file to support various cool modification available over XDA...
Edit /
it seems HTC make same stuff... here it is a guideline ot example...

I had the same issue. I was getting 165k+ in Antutu but the phone would get uncomfortably warm when doing multiple passes, or gaming for extended periods.
In the Thermal section of Kernel Auditor, I enabled the Core Control and Temperature Throttle options and the phone still gets warm, but only as warm as you'd expect. I still get ~155k in Antutu consistently and the performance in general is still very smooth. I have the CPU governor set to ondemand, and the GPU governor to simple_ondemand. All other KA settings are default.
One other thing I always do is to reduce the Window Animation, Transition Animation and Animator duration scales to .5x (1x by default). It just makes the phone feel snappier in general. Settings > Additional settings > Developer options (MIUI-based).
I'm using the latest EPIC ROM. Using RR/LOS I couldn't replicate the same high Antutu scores consistently for some reason. I quite like MIUI after years of using CM and CM-like ROMS anyway.
already reduce animation x0.5... MIUI use a lot of this animation with complex and (very long calcul) then reduce this number make device seems much faster... anyway, u right...
A custom kernel for miui base... based on Dragon XIA exist in MI5 thread... only need to play a bit to make universal... with all source we can make somthing, but no have time to play with all tutorial available on XDA or Youtube...
Only way to make device much smoother and battery friendly or Perf/Warm destructor...
A month ago or so, i had this random period of time where perfZ started to show "-" for temperature ( i assume its gpu temperature because it doesnt match with battery or cpu temp from another app) and my phone was heating up much more in games but so was the performance was way better.
Normally after thermal throttling kicks in and device reaches heat equilibrium, my battery would sit around 38-39C, cpu at 42-43C. But in that time period where it showed "-", my equilibrium was battery sitting at 44C, cpu at 47-48C. Phone was considerably hotter to touch but you could still game on it. And performance was way better, it would fall to 50fps min instead of 40fps, which is very noticable. (Dont have exact numbers maybe a bit better)
Idk how this happened as it randomly happened one day but does anyone know how to make this work? My device isnt rooted. (s10+ exy)
(Small note: Using game plugins at max performance or custom doesnt help, maybe they arent optimised for dead by daylight, because thats the only game i play)
