[Q] Z1 overheating, should i get a replacement?

so i've been playing Injsutice: Gods Among Us with mobile data (for me to logged on and to access daily challenges), after 20-30 mins of playing, the game started to drop its framerate and i felt the phone is hot. I exited the game and i accidentally press the camera icon, to my surprise, the camera says something like, 'You can not use the Camera due to high temperatere...."
so i installed elixir and cpu-z for me to know the temperature, after several hours, i tried again to play Injustice with mobile data off, the phone became hot after 40minutes of game play and it has a fluid framerate and the camera works fine. the temperature was around 47C.
i cooled down the phone, and played with mobile data on, after 20mins the game drops it's framerate and the camera is not working again. it has a temperature of 49.6C
the question is:
- i know playing hd graphics keeps the phone hot, but is it normal to all z1 users especially when it's already forcing the CPU/GPU to lower its performance and prevent the camera from being used?
- do i have the right to get a replacement for the phone?
- have you also experienced this when gaming? especially online?
note:
- i'm running a rooted, locked bootloader, firmware .136
- underclocked at 1.75GHz

Try to record you problem and ask for a replacement, this is not a normal behavior....

QuadCore running for several minutes means heat generally.
But beside what phone exactly do to control heat the apps u use are important too.
for example famous angry birds make my phone hot! But Fifa-14 doesn't!
under-clocking doesn't mean certainly u won't get battery draining or heat issue
it needs also compatible kernel
anyway heat issue is not always because of hardware cause there s also heat-controller (or sth like this) inside firmware that can working not so good and u should repair ur phone by PCC
to be sure if it s hardware problem and ask for replacement, first completely restock it.

try underclocking your cpu to 900mhz you'll notice no slowdowns in game but the phone will still overheat, that is because the GPU is causing the overheat and is the one struggling in games, not the monstreous CPU in the z1. you can try flashing doom kernel or AOSP kernel by android.fr to underclock your GPU.

The phone will get hot anyway, doesn't take much, but playing a hd game will cook the bugger. Never play when plugged in if you are, put your apps on a diet and get rid of anything that you can do without, lightening your load will help a lot. Personally I wouldn't consider it a problem unless its affecting gameplay. The drop in frame rate is the CPU clocking down to protect it, which is a good thing and quite normal. So you have a case on your phone? Try it without If you do. If the phone begins to shut itself down then that's a worry and you should certainly look for a replacement.

What should be the CPU temperature of the Z3 Compact?

Hello all!
When I use my Z3C and doing nothing, I mean... just having the phone in my hand, slide between homescreen pages juste for... you know... when you have this sexy lady in your hand... just for looking
But even if I do almost nothing with it, I feel the back hot and my battery apps tell me that the battery is more than 40 degrees. Just for better results I downloaded the app "CPU temp" or "CPU-Z" and it tells me that the CPU is at 45 degrees.
And when I play games the back is more hot!
I just want to know if it's normal? If your Z3C is hot too. I know if I play it's hot but if 40 degrees just for using it with normal apps (Twitter etc...) it's normal?
Can you make some quick test, download CPU-Z and check the "thermal" tab for example or what you want?
For more simplicity in the thread, if you want and if you can, download the app CPU-Z and post the result of "thermal" tab here (just the first line temp), thanks!
And I even see videos of AnTuTu benchmarks on YouTube and the Z3C is at 47xxx... but my Z3C is always between 43xxx - 44xxx ... I don't know if it's the same problem. What scores have you in AnTuTu?

my phone is always on 50+ celsius but i think it's normal. it happen on LG G3 too

After about 15 minutes of gaming, my sensor says 40.0 c., but I also have my CPU downclocked by a lot to extend battery life by huge margins. Stock setting puts the CPU frequency at 2.5ghz, and I have mine downclocked to 1.0ghz since I didn't see direct impact on performance with the games I'm playing (mostly emulators or GPU-dependent games).
tsens_tz_sensor0 is the highest at 40.0 c
msm_therm is the lowest at 32.0 c
At stock settings though, my phone runs at 50.0c on average, and it heats up about as much as my Galaxy Note 3 when they're playing the same games. For awhile, I thought the Z3c just heated up more than other phones, but after playing with both phones at relatively the same time, I realize that's pretty much just in my head.
Oh, forgot to mention. Also running on stock 5.1.1 that's rooted, debloated, xposed with greenify and amplify, and a custom Luxx profile to manage adaptive brightness.

Overheating question: is that normal?

I'm using Z3+ with latest firmware on it (downloaded it with wi-fi). I've mentioned terrible thing, as i suppose. When I browse internet, and watch youtube while charging the phone, the average processor temperature is 55-60, but it sometimes rises to 76 and than drops down.
Tell me please, is that normal temperature for the phone processor? Won't it harm the processor or another phone components?

The heat is wasted energy, most CPU are inefficient and generate heat.
I have a Z2 and a Z3+ (and previously iPhones for 5 years) - the Zs are definitely "hot" compared to the iPhones but the melting point of silicon and solder is quite high (maybe 150C or more).
Remember the days when laptops were too hot to put on your lap? Those machines still work fine today.
So I don't think the device will be harmed from internal heat (aside from more quickly revealing dry joints perhaps) but it may feel warm in your hand compared to other phones. The way I hold mine, I barely notice, all the heat is in an area above my hand. I only notice if the phone was working hard and then I put it straight in my pocket.
FWIW both the Z2 and Z3+ shutdown the camera app after about 30 minutes continuous 1080P recording, however using alternate apps (Better Camera, Google Camera) I have been able to record 1080P for an hour before I got bored and stopped it.
My Z2 records 4K for about 5 minutes, my Z3+ records 4K for about 15 minutes.
It's only the native camera app shuts down to cool off, I guess the image processing works the SoC harder than alternate apps/api.
tl;dr - yes I think it's normal and things won't hurt the silicon and solder until 150 celsius or more - the phone would become unstable first anyway as the CPU mis-computes due to heat.

I think it doesen't matter because it may be occur but if it dont hamper your device then no need to worry about this .Some device like
modem ,laptop and other smart device become heat for a long time use .Thats why dont worry .

Thermal Settings

I have noticed the Xiaomi Mix has some persistent software thermal throttling after a short period of time.
I ran the same test on a OnePlus 3T and noticed this throttling issue is not present.
It's possible the temps to start throttling are too low on the Mix.
Is there any way to modify or increase these throttle limits?
I know this has been done before but I cannot load the Thermal conf file in /system/ etc / thermal-engine.conf
Can we replace the file with something else ?
The OnePlus forum members released several versions of the file with different throttling temps. Can we use these files or make our own.

Did you ever get any further with this? My phone idles at ~35C. I read a review that said throttling begins at ~40C so I get throttled when I do virtually anything.
I've only had this thing 2 days and the performance has been worse than my old Nexus 6 because the cores keep getting capped very low. I was copying some backed up files over WiFi from my PC. It was lots of small files so it was running for 20 mins or so. When I was trying to do other stuff in the meantime it started to get really sluggish. I used to do exactly the same thing on my N6 and I could never tell that file copying was running in the background. I checked Kernel Auditor and it was showing temps ~50C and the cores were all being capped around 5-600MHz.
I've tried the stock ROM (stable and beta) and EPIC, and Lineage/RR. It seems to be a bit worse on the latter two (Antutu won't go above 100k, but it's like 140k on the MIUI ones) for some reason, but it's an issue on all of them.

I have absolutely gotten further here I have managed to get throttling completely disabled actually.
The highest temp the CPU got to was 42 degrees Celsius after running Dolphin for 2 hours straight.
There is no need for thermal throttling on this device at all, hardware does a good enough job clearing the heat.
To stop the thermal throttling you need root access.
Use ES File Explorer from the play store and enable root access
Navigate to root and look for Folder system/etc and find file called thermal*******.*** ( I don't remember what it's called )
Cut this file from this location and paste it into another directory. I moved it to the sdcard for easy access. This way you can move it back if you do not like the results.
I have not experienced any overheating with this, also the battery doesn't drain like crazy. Performance is greatly improved with speed matching the Snapdragon 835 in a few scenarios.
Oh yeah restart the phone after you move the file so it can register the changes. Clock the cores appropriately with Kernal Auditor to make sure it can run at full blast when it needs to. On demand is way faster than interactive.

The problem isn't so much the throttling, it's that mine idles at ~35C already, so it was getting capped when I did virtually anything. If I run Antutu 2-3 times in a row and check the temps in Kernel Auditor it can be in the low 60s. Using other temp apps (CPUTemp) it only shows about 45C tops.
It definitely does feel pretty damn warm since I don't use a case. but I'd love to know what the 'real' temp was. I tend to believe the lower one since I got the 45C warning when using EPIC and that's exactly what the app said. it was.
My Antutu scores increased substantially too. I was sometimes dipping down to 80-90k but I regularly get ~140k now, even 160k once. I know not to go by those scores but when I could never even get above 100k it was a concern.

Yeah I'm thinking Xiaomi severely limits the thermal threshold to improve battery performance.
It's kinda all they care about in Japan for some reason.
Makes for some great performance improvements without the thermal settings being active.
This setting change is almost necessary of you need some heavy work done.

I think our best solution would be a modified .conf file that increases the thermal threshold as opposed to completely removing it.
Until this solution is available then this is our only choice.

i agree... i think with a ROM kitchen mayve this fil can be readable... anyway @ this point, we can only hope somebody dectypt this file to support various cool modification available over XDA...

I had the same issue. I was getting 165k+ in Antutu but the phone would get uncomfortably warm when doing multiple passes, or gaming for extended periods.
In the Thermal section of Kernel Auditor, I enabled the Core Control and Temperature Throttle options and the phone still gets warm, but only as warm as you'd expect. I still get ~155k in Antutu consistently and the performance in general is still very smooth. I have the CPU governor set to ondemand, and the GPU governor to simple_ondemand. All other KA settings are default.
One other thing I always do is to reduce the Window Animation, Transition Animation and Animator duration scales to .5x (1x by default). It just makes the phone feel snappier in general. Settings > Additional settings > Developer options (MIUI-based).
I'm using the latest EPIC ROM. Using RR/LOS I couldn't replicate the same high Antutu scores consistently for some reason. I quite like MIUI after years of using CM and CM-like ROMS anyway.

already reduce animation x0.5... MIUI use a lot of this animation with complex and (very long calcul) then reduce this number make device seems much faster... anyway, u right...
A custom kernel for miui base... based on Dragon XIA exist in MI5 thread... only need to play a bit to make universal... with all source we can make somthing, but no have time to play with all tutorial available on XDA or Youtube...
Only way to make device much smoother and battery friendly or Perf/Warm destructor...

Temperatures "database"

I've got an idea. Since I didn't find any kind of thread about this subject, I was thinking to create one where you all can share your temperatures and what are you doing or using when you measure your oneplus 5 temps.
You can install CPU-Z or Aida64. There are a lot of parameters but I think the most important is the battery and a sort of average of the others.
For instance, I'm using XDA app to write this post and have Instagram and Facebook messenger opened in background.
My temps are:
-> battery 31.8°
-> average of the rest: 36°/37°
After this moment I kept those apps opened and started to watch an Anime stream on kissanime with chrome.
->battery 34°
-> average of the rest 39°/40°
Have fun

And what is the point of this? BTW without ambient temperature all collected data are unusable.

I dont see the point either. Anything below 50°C is to be considered low anyway.

The idea was to have something where people can share their temps a see if there is or not a possibility for their phone to overheating.
I might be a little apprehensive about my temps, sometimes I think that my phone is a little hotter than it should be.
However, if you think that this thread is bad, I kindly ask to somebody with permissions to delete it.
Ahh my ambient temperature when I measure those values was about 22°/23°

There are so many variables, that you can't say what is normal temperature and what temperature it should have. Do you hold it in your hand? You will get higher temp. Is sun shining on your phone? Higher temp. Do you often use camera? Higher temp.... Unless you encounter extremes, you can't decide what temperature is normal. If you think, that something is wrong, it's better to start with collecting better stats of battery consumption, because excesive heat is consequence of another problem.
