Hi guys. I'm a long time xda lurker who just purchased a LG G5 RS988 because I read in the forum that I could unlock the boot loader. Soon after activation (MetroPCS) I noticed the LTE would not stay on. In a area where LTE is very strong, it makes no sense to drop to HSPA. The only time LTE works is when I restart using network select under network settings and only lasts for under a minute before dropping to HSPA. It never recovers to LTE.* I also noticed that the phone selects band 2, unlike my other MetroPCS devices which normally utilizes band 4. I called MetroPCS and have done everything I could with them and including setting my APN correctly. So I figured that I would have to flash my phone with a different ROM to ever fix it. I ran into a few major problems during my adventure to get it the boot loader unlocked. I have the BRIGHTPOINT model G5 (who ever the bleep that is) and came with 10c Android 6. I followed all the directions in the xda threads and quickly realized 10c had no fastboot mode. I tried all the button combinations and adb reboot fastboot and nothing would bring it up. It didn't even have a recovery mode. So my adventure took me to LG Bridge application for windows. I ran that and thank my lucky stars I found a update. I upgraded to 10h which switched me to Android 7. First thing I checked is if my LTE problem was resolved, which it wasn't. I took another shoot at fastboot and to my amazement I am now able to enter fastboot mode. Excited, I went to LG development site, signed up and ran the tutorial to submit my imei and device Id to receive my boot loader unlock bin/code. I submit my information and I get a rejection after submitting the form on site that says: Unfortunately, your device(United States, (BRIGHTPOINT(USA))* )does not support unlocking the bootloader.
Now what?* I can't flash or at least I personally don't know any work arounds and I can't root unless there is some method unknown to me. How do I force a new ROM into the phone without bricking it and how do I fix this LTE issue? Someone, anyone, any help is appreciated!!
OK let's try this.
Someone at least help me with a couple questions.
#1 is it possible to root without unlocking the bootloader on my LG G5.
#2 is it possible for me to flash my G5 with any other update? I am on 10h, are there any other updates I can flash?
#3 is it possible to flash any updates without unlocking the bootloader?
Thank you in advanced.

1) You can root without unlocking bootloader only if you're lucky enough to find one of the universal rooting apps or PC programs that actually works on your device, you'll have to try them all for yourself to see if they work.
2) if there is/are stock updates you can flash them.
3) you can flash updates without unlocking bootloader if they are stock updates, but you can't apply stock updates if the device is rooted, it has to be unrooted, has to have an unmodified system partition and has to have stock recovery.
You can't flash custom recovery or custom ROMs with a locked bootloader.
Your issue probably isn't in your device software. It's more than likely an issue caused by the network itself.
Metro PCS is an MVNO(sub contracted cellular provider that uses another providers network). They have to pay the network they are under for the data that their customers use. This often means that they limit or throttle data speeds to make it more cost effective for them, so they don't lose money paying for the data that you use on the network that they are paying to use.

Thank you so much for answering all my questions. I have tried using all of LG software to flash, however I ran into problems with all of them. From unable to load some model or no detection of my phone.

I am on a unlimited data plan and I barely use data every month because I have wifi. I used a little over one GB this month so I have no idea why they would throttle my bandwidth. I have read in this forum of other people with RS988 BRIGHTPOINT version and having the same issue. Something about the software being directed to perform a certain way on CDMA even though the phone is unlocked for both technology's. With that being said, it would still be unlikely to fix the problem by somehow flashing it to a non BRIGHTPOINT stock?
How do I flash when none of LG software works for me and what can I flash it to that's not BRIGHTPOINT?

There are a few factor that could be the cause of these kinds of speeds even though you haven't exceeded high speed data limits.
1) They are trying to keep bandwidth at the bare minimum level for high speed data to keep their cost down but aren't doing a very good job of it and actually dropping too low.
2) Maybe it is due to the total amount of data being used by all of their users at a given time and they drop the speed to control how much total data they are having to pay the network they are under for.
3) Total area coverage and proximity to towers along with the amount of traffic on those proximal towers. In other words, maybe the load on the system in your area is very high and they are trying to limit it for cost purposes.
As for what you can flash for whatever reason, I haven't a clue. I'm just trying to potentially explain the cause of your data speed issues.
I deal with the same issues on my cellular network which is also a MVNO network under Verizon towers, I have unlimited plan also and I don't exceed my high speed limit, the thing is, it has done this with 3 different devices on this same network. This tells me that software is not to blame, the cellular provider is the cause. I live in a 4G area with plenty of coverage but I've still had my 3G device and my 4G devices frequently drop to 1x speeds for no reason and do it for extended periods more than just a few minutes.
And my wife's 4G device frequently drops to HSPA+ and HSPA speeds, even 1x sometimes, that device is also on the same network that mine are. See a connection yet? That kind of pattern can't be a device/software related issue.

Thanks again for your quick response to my last reply.
I don't think they would just pick my phone to do this to. I have a family plan and my fiance has had three phones since we been together and none had this issue. I have personally had two other phones and they didn't have this problem. With all the past and current phones, LTE coverage is really high. We live right next to a tower.
I believe you when you say some networks can and will do that to people. But all the evidence to the problem points to the phone because I doubt they would single out my phone. I am actually using the same sim card from my LG G4 (the phone before I upgraded to G5) which the G4 worked perfect.

So far, so solved.
I have had the exact same issue you described @Skimpypimp . Last year I switched onto a family member's at&t plan and my Nexus 6 would not stay on LTE, despite the APN being correct. Through contacting att reps I discerned that they really just wanted me to buy a phone from them (their IMEI #). I called them and gave them my "new" IMEI, and suddenly I had pure uncut LTE.
Fast forward through me being scammed on Craigslist by buying a rent-a-center LG G5 a few months later which I finally just got working this month. Now I'm having the same issue as you. LTE for a minute, then back to hspa. I just tried switching it to LTE/CDMA mode and I'm using the att broadband APN (what is used on tablets) instead of the nxtgenphone APN. It's been 10 minutes so far and still LTE. IDK if you're able to take similar actions on your network, but that worked for me.
Good luck!!

Hello!
Well, after so may time since I bought my phone I finally today was able to make my D3 to make/receive calls and sms.
So I would like to share my experience so may be helpfull to another friend around here, since by today, is the first time that could be confirmed that a subsidy+locked D3 is unlocked by a Turbo sim (the info around is about D2G that was the info tha I was following in order to try another turbosim after my previous failed attemp with other turbosim version), and my phone is in original Veri$*n version 590 rom.
So, in order to be detailed and helpfull:
My D3, was and until today, Subsidy+Locked after try 2 codes that was sold to me form an internet code seller well recognized and after weeks of try the other codes providers over the net, ALL of them have the same codes. If this is You case, You like me are in bad luck and by now seems that Turbosim is the only hope.
Seems that if the D3 was activated over Veri$*n network, None of this codes works because appears that Veri$*n change the internal code OTA at the time of first activation, so if You want to have a real unlocked D3, buy for one that NEVER will be activated so very probably you could unlock it by internet sellers codes or buy for a D3 that have been really UNLOCKED with a proper code of Veri$*n.
The version of turbosim that I already bought was exactly this (Ebay # Item number: 270686865877):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/27068686587...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_4125wt_1398
and I prepare my phone with this steps in order to get it working:
1) Made a factory reset form settings
2) I choose to root my phone and then made the fix for the Wrong UMTS signal indication
follow the info on this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326310
is Yellow transparent very thin and flexible and the package is ORANGE with a YELLOW big spot in front with the title: "Sim Unlock Card SmartPhone" (beware of the version because my previous turbosim that failed have the same title BUT was BLACK color with a Round Rubber cover over the chip and came in a BLACK package with the same title in RED characters and this BLACK turbosim DIDNT WORKS!), only the Yellow works.
By now I found in the seller store that It now have a new version that seems the same color but said 2011 version (the one that Iordered was 2010 version, but I almost sure that I received the 2011 version, but since I not sure I ordered both versions as spares, since during my tests I was almost sure that I damage my turbosim, but lucky was not), The Yellow turbosim package states that is compatible with 1500 diferent phone models, and that have capabilities to allow 3g data and fix to won't be out of signal when travel from one cell tower to another, so said that have 99% signal back automatically.... well, I will see in the followinbg days...
3) Then I put my local sim WITHOUT turbosim, and boot the phone (if your phone locks on android screen, bypass it by touch the 4 corners of the black background,so in the below corners of screen, just above the "buttons")
4) Go to wireless networks and set the phone for GSM/UMTS service, automatic and make an apn with the name only (in the original Veri$*n you will be not able to change mcc and mnc numbers since if You change when You save the phone delete the apn instead of save it)
5) Turn off, then remove sim and carefully put the turbosim in place and the slide the local sim over and in position (the gold rivets goes UP making contact with local sim contacts). I was in need of ligth bend over the steel belt of my D3 in order to allow put the Turbo sim with local sim above in position, AND in my case I slide the turbosim from botton to up and the sim in the other normal sim insert directin SINCE THE CHIP is somewhat tall for the steel slot of sim so, I prefer to do anything but force my turosim since it is fragile.
6) Turn on the phone and then the screen may change to tell your about autorize data roaming and I suggest You to allow it, in order to easy test of the turbosim connection and after 2-3minutes the network may be available.Try to make the process in a zone that You may be sure that have a good signal coverage from provider antennas.
7) The only issue by now is that since I not able to change APN mnc and mcc codes I not able to get any data connection, so I wonder if some friend could help me clarify if I flash another rom diferent from original Veri$*n, may be posible that I could change APN settings and save them to test if could be available data connection.
Please, excuse me by my long post, I hope that I dont bother, but I would like to share all the info, since I didnt like the short posts that have short partial info since makes the whole answer a ping-pong of posts.
Hope that may helps and best regards!
How do we know that this isn't some way to get people to buy your fake lock code.

@tacosrdelicioso
well, if You may simply check on this site, you will found a lot of my previous posts about the troubles that I have with my D3, and in addition, I found ofensive Your suggestion because I never said that I sell anything, so you put conclusions over me and my post.
To friends around here, well, I continue my testing, and the happyness dont last too much... the main trouble is that the signal lost is NOT really recovered (as same in the D2G case). So,meanwhile, the phone is in coverage, at least voice and sms work fine, but as soon You move from your place and lost signal from the cell tower that You register at phone turn on, it lost signal and the only way by now is too put the sim on another phone and reboot, then move the local sim to the D3 with turbosim and turn on again, and it will be working again... BUT what a [email protected]!N in @ss!!!
Crap, of course the only real solution is have a D3 unlocked with Veri$on code in veri$on network coverage or unlock a D3 that never was activated over veri$on with internet sellers codes.
Any help will be welcome.Thanks
Best regards to all.

maybe this prog. can be helpful to change mnc and mcc, give it a try..
I have now droid 3 on the way to my country.
Seller say, that the phone was never out of box and never was activated.
So this phone is unlockable ?
The bootloader on the d3 is still locked and I'm not sure if anyone is working on unlocking it because of the bootstrap/ safestrap workarounds

This discussion is in no way related to the phone's bootloader lock but rather the phone's subsidy lock (meaning that the SIM tray is locked to Verizon's/Vodafone SIM card and will not accept any other SIM).
Back to topic, thank you so much xaser for your findings. I'm only having 2 problems right now:
1st: I can't get rid of the R in the signal bars, so the phone thinks it's roaming when it actually isn't. I made sure I wasn't paying roaming charges (you can never be sure) by calling my carrier and asking about it, but apparently it's just the phone thinking it's roaming.
2nd: When I get to choose my network operator (settings / wireless and networks / Mobile Networks / Select network ) I can only select 2G services which to me sounds like I won't get 3G at all. This isn't a major problem for me since I don't have a data plan, but it will be an issue when I decide to sell the phone.
Also, I would like to ask if anyone can confirm that the device can ONLY be unlocked when connected to Verizon's network, for I have tried with 2 different unlock codes here in Argentina but had no luck with them (making me turn to the Turbo Sim option).
I would also like to note that the SIM model that Xaser suggested didn't work for me, but instead this one did
I hope the thread revival helps people under the same circumstances.
I'd suggest finding a way to get the phone back on Verizon temporarily so that a valid unlock code can be used. This would be achievable by finding a trusted friend with an account in good standing with Verizon, a line which has been active for longer than six months, then have them put the D3 on their line and get the code. They can easily switch back to their phone after unlocking the D3. I'm not sure if Verizon will require the D3 be on the line for six months, but I'm sure some sweet talking would help. I've heard some cases where people get their phones unlocked after a month or two, just because they are nice to customer service ;-)
Now, about some other things talked about here: it depends on which frequencies or 3G bands your carrier uses if you want to get the D3 to work on 3G. I don't know the names of them, but the D3 gets AT&T's 3G bands and 2G of course, but isn't compatible with T-Mobile's. If you look those up and compare them to your carrier's bands, you'll know whether you'll get 3G or not.
I'd like to share my own small note and ask a question too. My D3 is unlocked by VZW and works on T-Mobile, but it loses signal randomly (like it forgot my previous selections for preferred operator, and it always shows that operator will be found automatically, which makes it not work) and sometimes it has signal but no 3G. It could be from changing towers as mentioned above, but I'm still trying to figure out whether this problem is caused by my messing with APNdroid (which is used to turn off UMTS data connection in instances when it isn't necessary, like when connected to wifi, by changing APN settings), or if it has to do with the SIM moving or being bumped, or if it's simply resetting after I cycle power. I'm used to turning my phone off then back on whenever it starts lagging or having other performance issues, but I'm wondering if that may be causing issues with my network connection or settings.
If anyone has more clues or ideas, thanks. I hope my perspective has helped here as well
Guys I just had a friend who for a Verizon Droid 3 from The US... It was locked but had it unlocked here in my country via some "code" he bought... saying it is working perfect now unlocked...
Does it work that way or not... cuz seems the Verizon phones have lots of issues when it comes to.unlocking...

Well I don't think I will be returning to the US any time soon, maybe around the end of next year. And the few friends I do have in the US are on Sprint so they wouldn't be able to give me a hand. I just want to know whether it is necessary to be within Verizon Network in order to have the phone code unlocked or if one can unlock it regardless of coverage overseas.
Also, regarding 3G, I hear what you are saying but my point is that since I am using a Turbo Sim to unlock my phone I am unsure whether the Turbo Sim will give me issues to get data at 3G speeds. The Droid 3 does indeed support Argentina's 3G bands (UMTS 850 and 1900).
Thank you all for your input.
TurbiSIM does no longer unlock my XT862. Used it successfully for about 3 months. It started with data communication errors for about a month.
I noticed that every time I went abroad and used the phone (even in flight mode), I had to reset it in order to unlock it with Turbosim. Now, total failure...
Later edit:
To my surprise, it works again! But with another SIM from a different service provider. The one that used to work is no longer working with TurboSIM.
Turbo sim works in my case
I had the same problem - hardlocked droid 3. I have tried all the way but there was no solution arround this. finaly turbo sim was the only way. now Phone works perfectly. no any problems at all.
So when I first got the phone I had zero connectivity issues. After about 2 weeks I started having very occasional problems with it taking awhile to re-connect to 4g going in and out of weak signal areas. Now my phone refuses to connect to a mobile data connection of any sort. W T F.....and of course this happens after having the phone for 38 days.
Running Liberty 3 2.0 atm w/ 5.5.886.
What is the latest official release so I can flash to it before calling and *****ing at Verizon?
idk bout the probs you're having other than you're rooted, etc, yada.
i'm still stock, no available updates, running sysver 5.5.886.XT875
Verizon is having nationwide data issues right now. Try switching to CDMA only. If I'm on CDMA/LTE it won't connect to any data but if I switch to CDMA only I at least get 3G.
I was thinking the same thing, I haven't had the data issues that a lot of people have with the Bionic. I was getting 34mbs download speeds this morning on 4G, then when I got to work, no data.....so I did all the known fixes, and still nothing, thought it was my phone until I read about the Verizon issue. Took me a while to get 3G running, but now it seems OK, just no 4G. Hopefully it will be back up soon.
Yup, the outage has been acknowledged by VZW. I think this is the 5th nationwide LTE outage I've experienced since purchasing the Tbolt on launch day back in March. It proves once again that VZW is very good at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
I know that if the network where I work experienced 5 major outages in 7 months people would be fired. I'm sure the lower level engineers are hard at work fixing the problem but the Director or VP of wireless networks needs to go .... now.
As an operations guy who runs applications for a major health care system I know I plan changes in stages and must present and document validated back out procedures before I get to do the change. The change control process at VZW is SERIOUSLY BROKEN. I know what you network engineers are thinking .... someone fat-fingered a change. Nope, the severity and duration of this outage (and the ones before it) are a sign of much bigger problems.
I never thought I'd see the day where I seriously contemplated leaving a carrier because of network unreliability. Bad coverage is one thing but not knowing how to run a major network speaks to bigger problems.
Tried switching to cdma only first thing and no connection there either. Guy right beside me with a Samsung Charge was still getting 4g with 20mbps down.
For those keeping track you can add another data outage today. I'll echo my comments from above ... VZW is great at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
Oh yeah, wasn't it Verizon that used to make fun of AT&T's network reliability? Sounds like they are following AT&T's footsteps. I just came back from Chicago which should be a strong 4G area, and I kept losing my data connection and my phone was already set to CDMA only. At home in the southeast I will occasionally lose data connectivity but not as bad a what I experienced in Chicago.
So i am having issue. I bought a Moto X 2014 and it is clean in terms of imei. Both t-mobile says its clean and at&t says its clean. It is a AT&T variant XT1097 and like i said it is clean in terms of imei. weirdly enough T-mobile wont be picked up on the service, but AT&T will? it basically says
No Service
selected network (T-mobile) unavailable
and when i do try to select a network it says
"cant connect to network right try again later"
has anyone else have this issue with the AT&T moto trying to use it on at&t? and found a solution? if there is any solution ill take it i need all the help i can get lol
i tried reseting it, factory reseting, airplane mode, etc literally almost everything else.
Sorry.....I have similar issue..Did you find the solution? If yes could you share the info for it.

Add the T-Mobile APN.
it's discussed on the ATT thread, basically it's an issue with the lollipop radio used on our update, "fix" is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/att-xt1097-lollipop-discussion-t2951294/page36
Add the APN (as mentioned above)
Download the 4G/LTE switcher app
select WCDMA preferred as network, only HSDPA speeds but it's better than no service ^_^
I had this similar issue and it was driving me absolutely insane, the connection would be weak then it would just disconnect me altogether and then zero service. Most of the time if I were to get a call the radio would switch to HSPAP like normal then after the call it would fail to switch back to LTE then it would just completely drop connection. This is on an unlocked AT&T XT1097 running on the unlimited MetroPCS (T-Mobile) mind you.
Since February 2015 I've been dealing with this bug by using LTE switch to get by, but this got so tedious and it just irked me that I had to go thru all this crap because of poor development. This is a pretty huge bug that should've never been there to begin with. Seriously, how dare you mess with my service Google?
Anyways what I did to fix this completely was just purchase MoFoRoot for $20 (fully worth BTW) and flash the 4.4.4 AT&T modem and now I have zero issues. I used to not connect to the network on a reboot but since flashing the modem I am now able to connect and stay connected without any hassle. The connection is now solid and I can't be happier with this phone. Currently on stock 5.0.2 non-rooted with 4.4.4 modem and zero problems, now I don't need to get another phone.
Using the fast.metropcs.com APN as the T-Mobile APN doesn't allow me to connect. I have solid LTE and HSPA/HSPAP service with it and can't be happier... I take that back, I'd be happier with better indoor coverage.
Thank you makers of MoFoRoot for your lifesaver app, I am happy to have supported your fine work.
has anyone noticed that the 4G on the S10 is quite buggy?
the speeds are extremely unstable, and sometimes completely unusable. (not a problem with the carrier, tried it on another phone and it's fine)
What I've noticed is that if it ever goes into medium power saving, 4G will stop working completely, it'll still show 4G, and i can still make calls, but no internet connection, even after exiting power saving mode. The only fix is I'd have to restart the phone for 4G to work again.
anyone have the same problem/ knows a fix?
I've read that I should do a factory reset, but I really want to avoid that, setting up the phone is time consuming.
Side note: battery life is not as good as expected, but that seems to be an issue for all exynos, not just me.
Same Problem here i unlock phone 4G shows but it tanke some time if i can use the Internet
Speed is Very slow and unstable
I am having connectivity problems as well. Keeps loosing the connection. I have to turn on airplane mode then turn it off all the time.
I don't have any problems with network connectivity, so far. In the link my result a moment ago: https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/4796337263
Hope you get some sensible connectivity soon. Cheers!
Same issue here! It was fine since I first received the device, but yesterday, I manually changed the network toggle to get better indoor signal. However, even after setting the toggle back to the original setting the LTE and data service kept dropping out. I tried manually toggling, switching network bands, etc... but nothing worked. It just keeps dropping data service.
I just hard reset the phone moments ago, and will update accordingly!
Update - Even after a network reset and hard reset it still dropped to Edge data a few times. However, after the last hour or so, it has locked back on to LTE+ and is holding strong. Seriously hope this is a software bug and not a bum radio chipset or antenna.

I'm on tmobile and my data is horrible in certain and what's weird I have all bars.
Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
not sure if i should say that its good to know I didn't get a dud.
but man, samsung needs to get their sh*t together, this is not acceptable for a flagship phone.
looks like i'll have to do a factory reset soon.
I'm on tmo as well. I have a feeling it's just jacked up radio software. I did some more tweaking and went into band settings *#BAND# on the dialer and disabled all the LTE bands that aren't used by TMO and that seems to have helped as well. It think this issue is congruent to the known issue with Sprint devices trying to connect to incorrect bands. I haven't used it out and about yet, but it definitely helped my phone stay latched on to LTE from my home. Additionally, when it does drop to HSPA, it doesn't get stuck like it used to.
I recommend tweaking the band setting before doing a hard reset.
Update - still doesn't fix the problem. Pains me to say it, but I'm afraid I have a hardware issue. I'm going to try a sim card swap as a last ditch effort, but will also seek an exchange as well just to get ahead of the problem.

This shortcut only works on Snapdragon version, do you have Snapdragon with 4G issue?
This code only runs on the Qualcomm chipset version. Oddly enough, my friend with the Exynos version has no problems, even though he's missing a couple of TMO bands for the US.
Yeah I have Exynos S10+ as well and it runs fine on T-mobile USA

This code is not working on SM-G9730 Qualcomm Hong Kong version. Any ideas?
Same problem here. I got the snapdragon US unlocked variant using here in Spain and compared with my old Google pixel, they do not have the same speed LTE connectivity even using the same SIM card. I tried to force using the 20 BAND (800 MHz) but I dont really know how. My galaxy s10 plus is using the BAND 3 so it does not let it picking the fastest possible band in my city. Any ideas? I also did think galaxy s10 plus US variant did not have 20 LTE band, but I checked it and realize it even does. One more question, what is the difference between 4G and LTE? Here in Spain all devices are running 4G, not seen any device running LTE, but my new samsung does. How can I switch it to 4g or LTE+? Thank you everyone boys.
just wondering if anyone has gotten the ASCA/ASC8 update and can report whether this problem is solved wit firmware update?
Bands matter depending on where you are. Depending on your area, only specific bands will be used. However, some bands used, while not faulty, are easily interfered for some reason with cases or other obstructions like your hand. Most likely, Samsung is planning to give a large update considering signal direction. I would probably not factory reset if you have a lot of data, and the problem would probably come back.
I ended up having to send my device in to Samsung for analysis and repair. I'll keep everyone updated.
after ASC8 update, i think the problem has been solved, havent noticed any problems so far
TL;DR: USCC -> AT&T -> Google Fi -- Any way to get 4G/LTE on these carriers?
Hey all,
I haven't been very involved in the rooting/flashing/whatever scene since the Gingerbread-KitKat days, so my apologies for what might be a noob question, or if it even is the right question to ask.
A bit over a year ago, I switched from US Cellular to AT&T and brought my V40 with me. Despite some IMEI issues (was only 14 digits instead of 15, which messed with some online forms), I eventually managed to get it transferred. However, there was one big issue: I was only getting 3G/HSPA+ service. I imagine this would've been a deal breaker for most, but since I only really use my phone data for music streaming and Google Maps when I'm driving, it wasn't that big of a deal for me.
Then, recently, I switched to Google Fi to save money. I knew that the V40 didn't support the fancy carrier-switching stuff, but I didn't care as long as I had some sort of service. The same problem still persists, however: I only have 3G/HSPA+ service.
When I briefly looked into this last year, I remember seeing something about flashing some firmware that'd unlock the non-USCC LTE bands, but I'm not sure if this was valid (could be misremembering). Would flashing some sort of firmware on my phone allow me to have 4G again, and if so, what would I flash? The generic US unlocked firmware?
Also, not sure if this matters, but GSMArena and LG's own website both seem to state that the US Cellular's V40 model is the LM-V405UA0, but my model number according to Settings is LM-V405UA (no zero at the end). My phone worked fine on US Cellular, so I'm not sure what difference there is between the two models, if any.
edit:
Messing around with my phone settings, I was actually able to force a 4G LTE signal from T-Mobile (Google Fi's primary network iirc) under Settings > Network & internet > Mobile networks > System select and flipping the Network mode option between "Global" and "LTE/GSM/UMTS". Going from the latter to the former will switch me to 4G/LTE from 3G/HSPA+, but going in the opposite direction keeps me on 4G. To revert, I have to go further into the GSM/UMTS settings and select "UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ only" in the Network submode option.
Both the 3G and 4G options had about the same (slow) network speed of 2mbps down, and according to Signal Spy, the LTE was probably using band 4 (it had a question mark beside it, implying it wasn't very certain). I don't know if it's a band issue or a location issue, but since I'm on WiFi most of the time nowadays, I'm not that pressed about it... maybe I'll back things up and flash the US Unlocked firmware as a weekend project sometime.
