Want to install marshmallow on it if possible (so that I can set up SD as internal storage).
Is it possible?

This forum targets 5th/7th gen Fire (7 inch panel) devices, not the larger 6th/7th gen HD 8 siblings. The HD 8 forum can be found here.
Unfortunately, there are no custom ROM options for HD 8 devices, nor is there a reliable way to direct user content to the SD card beyond the (weak) controls available in FireOS.
There are tools and techniques that offer better utilization of external/SD card storage (eg: Apps2SD app; symbolic linking). However, all require root access.

I have Nook Color 8GB with 2GB microSD card. I want to save a few movies to my Nook for my upcoming long flight and wonder what the best way to do it is. Could somebody please answer these two questions for me:
1. Can I copy videos to Nook's internal memory to take advantage of the 8GB?
2. Which video converter and which settings one should use to get the smallest file size possible with a decent quality?

I do copy videos to my internal memory; however, they cannot be seen by the video player in that location. I find that the internal memory is a great place to ‘store’ the videos, but they need to be moved to the SD card (at least that is where I move them) when you are ready to watch them.
As for the video conversion, I use HANDBRAKE which is very easy to use and free. If you google NOOK settings for HANDBRAKE you can easily locate the configuration for the Nook Color.
Hope this helps and have a safe trip.

Thanks for the suggestion. Which application do you use to move files from the internal memory to the SD card?

I use Root Explorer (cost, but worth it) for all my file exploring needs.
I use mobo to watch tv shows on my internal memory. Works great.
Sent from space
+1 for mobo and no converting to mp4.

1. Yes, you can. Mobo player or Rock player played almost every file format perfectly fine no matter they are stored in the internal memory or external uSD card.
Side note: you never has 8GB of internal memory. To know how much, pls check it under Storage. If your NC is new, most likely you only have 1GB.
2. Handbrake is great tool.
When I connect my Nook Color to the computer, I see the drive called MyNOOKcolor, but its capacity is only 1 GB. Is it supposed to be that little? No way to take advantage of the full 8GB?
@alosito,
You will never have 8gb available as the system uses some of it to boot up. I repartitioned mine by following the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371 .
As far as your two questions above.
1. You can copy anything to your emmc and access it. Before I got my 16gb sd card, I put movies there unconverted. But a feature length movie can be brought down to the native screen resolution of the nook color using several converters including handbrake. All I did to access the movies was to use File Expert (free on the market) and navigate to the emmc to play the movie using rock player.
2. There are plenty of guides for handbrake and others to achieve this. I do not convert as I have a big enough card and rock player plays anything I throw at it. A converter that I use for work that has hundreds of presets is from Xilisoft. They make converters that go straight from blue ray or dvd to multiple formats/devices.

You will never get the "full 8G". The above should net you about 5G.
Repartition as above and consider this:

When I reboot in Recovery, I get "Install Failed" message. I have CM7 installed. What am I doing wrong?
You need to have a bootable sd to get this to work as it wipes everything on internal (emmc) memory. A CM7 rom should be on the bootable sd too.
+1, Redoing the partition on any drive totally wipes that drive.
Hello all- I am looking to switch back to Windows and am looking at the Nokia 820 and 920, obviously the 920 is higher end, etc... but the addition of the micro sd slot on the 820 is very enticing.
Is the addition of the micro sd card any advantage as far as being able to install .xap files or any other say homebrew type things (if even possible).
One other thing... I currently have a 32GB micro sd in my Galaxy S3 with lots of music, will I be good to go on inserting the micro sd in the 820 or will I have to reinstall all the music using Zune software ??
Thank you for any help !!!!

You can only keep Music, Videos, Photos and (using a recent Beta Labs App from Nokia) Offline Maps on the SD Card. If you currently have regular MP3/AAC-files without DRM on the Card it should work without any changes.
You can not install Apps to the SD Card and Apps can not move their data to the SD Card. About 2.5 GB on the internal Memory are used by the OS + ~ 1 GB for temporary storage that can't really be deleted (the possibility to clean up additional temporary storage was included with a recent Firmware update for the 820).
So basically: if most of your data is Media you can use the SD Card for this but if you plan on installing a number of big Apps (e.g. Games like Modern Combat 4) I believe it would be better to take a phone with more internal storage.
Installing Apps from the SD Card can help to install big Apps if the internal storage is almost full as less temporary space is needed that way. Sideloading of Homebrew Software is currently not possible without an official Developer Unlock and even then I don't know of any Homebrew Apps that have been able to do more than what Marketplace Apps are able to.
Cheers for all that information Stevie...:good: :good:
It seems that the 920 will be the way to go then which definitely pleases me. 32GB internal memory should be more than enough, now the final decision.. which colour ???? LOL
Cheers mate, LL13-
Hello,
I have a Nook Color and a Nook HD both running CM 10.2.1 (installed on internal storage). I have two questions:
1. The Nook Color's settings menu looks/functions differently from the Nook HDs The HD has a sort of scrolling menu on the left that, when an option is selected, opens more details on the right part of the screen. The Nook Color's setting menu does not split left and right. It only displays the main menu items and selecting an option from there takes you to that specific menu category. Is this by design, or is there a setting on the HD that I have checked that isn't selected on the Color?
2. The Nook Color has the option, from the Apps Information setting, to move apps to SD. However, the Nook HD does not. Is this a device difference, or a software setting that can be changed? (Ideally, I would like to be able to move apps from internal storage to external storage on the Nook HD).
Thanks for all of the great info and responses.
1. This is because the nook HD has a tablet interface and the nook color does not. This is not selectable. It is set automatically based on screen density.
2. App2sd does not work on the HD/HD+ since it uses an emulated SD on internal (shared with space for apps). But you can free up space on the internal memory by using my SD swap zip from my nook HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. It allows media files to be stored on the external SD freeing space for more apps on internal memory.

Thank you

I'm an iPhone user, considering buying a capable Android phone with a small screen size. Xperia Z3 Compact is a serious candidate, it comes with 16GB flash (built in) with possibility to expand up to 128GB microSD. Is microSD extension (from the user point of view) fully equivalent to internal flash, or are there restrictions?
I know if I buy 128GB iPhone6, all that space is instantly available for anything that I want to put there (software, multimedia, in-app data). Moreover, I do not care or use any multimedia files, such as photos, videos, music. The extended memory will be used purely for app's software and in-app data. For example: offline navigation maps, Dropbox offline files, epub books, etc.

LOL, sarcasm from previous post aside, and to answer the question, currently you can only save photos/videos/music and that depends mostly if the apps you are using allow writing to the sdcard. Sony has added a nice feature in Storage to monitor and manually move the three types above. My Nexus 5 did not have this, so it is nice that Sony stepped up. However, as you stated, you basically want full reign over the sdcard, and that is not going to happen with ICS, unless you root the device. I have read that Google is lightening up its restrictions with the new Lollipop OS re sdcards, so you may want to wait.
Best to check the biggest apps if they support using sd. Sygic offline maps for example can be used from the sd.
Hi everyone, new user here.
Just got a couple of 2015 fire's for myself and my 7 year old daughter and been playing around with the setup on mine first (as hers is a christmas present). I had installed rocket player so I could add music and videos to her profile (why the hell don't amazon allow this?!) and it was working well with having completely separate storage partitions essentially so I could have my own music and videos for the main profile but when I load the kids one my files are hidden so she only sees the music and videos that are safe for her.
So far so good except I've now added a 64gb micro sd card as the internal 8gb was disappearing fast - now I still have the two separate storage profiles but the SD card (where I actually want to store everything!) is common across both profiles so anything that's on there is visible to Rocket Player in both profiles (not so good...)
Am I missing something / doing something wrong or is this just a silly limitation of the operating system?
I don't see how it shouldn't be possible to have the same thing on the sd card, afterall it must just be a hidden folder system?
Any help appreciated, it's not a massive issue (as my fire will be for me exclusively eventually) but I was surprised this didn't just work as expected.
Thanks for reading (if you've got this far!), Matt
