When I first got this device, voice mails were listed in the recents list, but that is no longer true.
How do I access them?

Not part of stock phone software.
And depends on the service your phone has.

no v/m integration here, either.
I'm on AT&T, and I've had to download the AT&T voicemail app (kinda clunky, but not too terrible) from the Play store to access my voicemail.
You likely will need to install a voicemail app from your carrier. :/

Yes it is. If you kill the GV process, you won't receive notifications.
Advanced Task Manager has "Apps", "Services", "All Apps", and "System". I think it's OK to kill it from "Apps", but not the other tabs.
I don't seem to get push notifications on my voicemail. I haven't check with texts yet....

You may have already done this, but it case you haven't, there's a new setting that has to be enabled for the instant notifications to work.

I did have that enabled. I had to reboot and then the notifications seemed to work better.

Same here. I had to go to my backup file in oder to use it. Thank Goodness for Back-Ups
Same here. I was, however, able to sign in after selecting "sign in using a different account" and using my same account info.
I love this update because of the sync with inbox. When I first finished installing the update I couldn't send a sms or do the sync so I just rebooted, ran fix_permissions, and that fixed everything!
The google blog post said the inbox syncing would stop the forwarding of a google voice SMS to the phone's regular SMS number. That is NOT the case for me. I'm still getting google voice SMS'es forwarded to my cell's number. This double text receiving is the single greatest aggravation of google voice texting.

That worked....but the weird thing is I don't have inbox sync as a new option. I still have the refresh option, but it says that it's the new version. I'll try to uninstall and reboot.
edit: Still no new options.

Why even whine about this? Just go to the website and uncheck forwarding.

You don't understand how Voice forwarding works. The "forwarding" setting on the Voice website is for additional forwarding of a text to an email address. Voice by default has always forwarded to the cell phone number associated with the Voice account. That was supposed to end with this update.
The Google blog post says the following:
"...feature called Inbox synchronization, which will notify your Android-powered device of new text messages or voicemails within seconds of receiving new messages..."
and
"Plus, Google Voice will automatically disable SMS forwarding to your mobile phone, so you won’t receive duplicate notifications."
It's odd to me that both these features do not work. Maybe we can figure out something by discussing.
btw, why is this whining? We're discussing an app and its features. We're trying to get this working and comparing notes with others. I don't whine... ever. We're blessed to have such amazing phones and software to begin with.

Since you already have the paid version. How well is it integrated ? looks like you still need to go in the app to make outgoing calls via google voice. does it share the contacts from the phone or do you have the transfer your contact book to google voice online ?
Go voice is very nice. But I don't think o can use it as phone Vmail.

Bottom line, you're not going to get google voice integration like it is in Android.
That said, GoVoice is a solid application.
It can access your phone's contact list and from the dialer part of the application and you can choose to text or call the person you selected from your contacts list.
You can also carry on threaded text conversations from your google voice inbox via GoVoice.
The only downside is that you don't get notifications from the App when you get a new SMS or voicemail. You can work around those limitations using google voice settings, though..
i.e. you can have it forward your SMS messages to your actual nuimber and you can reply to texts from the native SMS app and have it come from your google voice number to the recipient and you can have Google sms you or e-mail you when you get a voicemail from somebody.
It's not ideal.. but if you want ideal as far as Google Voice support, Android is the only real answer. Perhaps later the developer will be able to set information for live tiles so you can keep track that way.

GoVoice is slow and laggy. No push notification as mentioned. can't make calls out still. I have sent the developer an email stating such. There is a way that he sets up a certain number to use to not be charged the international calls. Not a good work around. I did pay for it.
I hope that Google Voice makes it way to the Marketplace. I use it to dial out to China, El Salvador and Vietnam. Comes in really handy.

Really we can not make any outgoing calls using this APP then it is useless.

This has not been my experience, also a paid user of the app here, my time with the app has been more like the longer reply than this one I've quoted.

I wish I could say the same thing. But if you look at the preview beta video of the GV companion it has so much more functionality. It has been over 35 days since he has tweeted. I am wondering what is happening with the final WP7. I sent a tweet to him and an email. I hope to hear from him soon.
U can use gvoice as default Vmail! Enter gvoice in phone settings.

SMS Client

Has anybody tried getting SMS on your nook? I tried getting Google Voice to work but can't remember specifically but I ran into some roadblocks getting it to work. It was looking for local phone services or something. Has anybody got at SMS to work on the nook. I think it would be nice to send and receive text messages.

Make sure you have a Google voice number not just the account. I had to pick a gv number in order for texts to work.

Google voice downloaded from the market works on my daughter's nook. She can send and receive texts. Is there a way to get the contacts to show up? When she tries to compose, it seems the only option is to manually type in the number. I can't find a way to access an address book from within google voice. Am I missing something?

Just use the same credentials. You should receive messages on both devices. I have my iPhone 4 and nook set up for that. Unless you want to deal with another number there is no reason to create a new one.

Has anyone tried getting WhatsApp to work? It needs to send a confirmation sms to your specified number, I'm trying to find a way to bypass that portion. Google Voice works great in the mean time, but Whatsapp is great for sending multimedia.
I am sensing a little confusion here...
Remember folks, true SMS messaging requires cellular service, as it uses the cellular radio to send packets of information to the cell towers and through the service providers.
The only way to go about text messaging without a cellular radio on a device is to use a VOIP service (Voice Over IP) that also allows text-messaging. I'm actually not familiar with Skype at all, so I'm not sure if they also use phone-numbers, but with Google Voice, you have to have a phone number, which is one that is provided to you (you get to choice of available numbers).
The only other option for messaging over text, other than using a VOIP service that offers a texting feature, is to use an instant-messaging service (i.e. AIM).
Agreed. I completely understand the sms bit, which is why google voice works. But Whatsapp is also data based, which is why its so great. However it still requires an activation step but sending an sms to your number which obviously cant be done. However I'm curious of anyone knows of a way to bypass the activation portion altogether?

cant you tell it to send a sms to your google voice number?
I can't seem to get this to work. I DLed the google voice app from the market, it walks me through set up, I log in with the same gmail account that my gvoice # is assigned to, but then it only shows my mobile number, not my gvoice #. I select add a # and then the screen just stays put....nothing happens. I have to press n to go back to my home launcher.
Any hints?

what do you guys mean by this? I can't get mine to work. Like the other guy said, i downloaded from market, selected my mobile phone number (when I try to add a phone number it doesn't work). I can send text messages that send from my GV number but I can't receive any messages. I can't receive any messages on my mobile phone either, for that matter.
Any ideas?
I don't have Google Voice installed on my mobile phone, but that shouldn't matter, right?

GTalkSMS / TalkMyPhone
I've been using a neat app called 'GTalkSMS' (available on Market) that allows me to use Google Talk to send and receive SMS from my phone number. GTalkSMS works great when I'm at desktop and is also quite serviceable from the Nook.
You may have to first set up a separate Jabber chat account for the phone (if you're using Google Talk as the chat program). After that step, I've used it for:
- sending & receiving SMSes (after forgetting my phone at home/other side of the house (lol));
- looking up contact info on the phone (includes email & physical addresses as well as phone numbers);
- locating my phone with GPS coordinates and by setting it to ring;
- writing on my phone/sending links or clipboard content...etc.
I don't have Google Voice locally, so I'm not sure how it compares -- let me know!

I've used GTalkSMS and Google Voice, and I prefer Google Voice, only because I don't have to set up a Jabber chat account to make it work, and it allows me to use the same number for SMS on all my devices. But if you don't have a Google Voice number, GTalkSMS is the way to go!

Google Voice Question.

I put my sprint number as my Google voice number. Does the stock messaging app still work? Should I disable it and use Google Voice? What about making calls from the Google Voice icon? Is that possible or do I need to use the normal phone icon?

I'm a Sprint Product Ambassador supporting the launch of the One.
The stock messaging app will reflect what is in your GV inbox. I recommend using the GV app itself wherever possible for the bext experience.
I don't see a dialer in the GV icon, I use GV to make all calls and just use the native dialer.

This couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know of any advantage to use the GV app on a sprint phone (save for going through old texts that may be gone from phone). The beauty of Sprint and Google Voice is the fact that you can use all the native apps without having to deal with the GV app at all.
Having to wait for the google voice app to load the data from your google voice account via Sprint's data connection is just not efficient. Which also means its not even possible to send a text through the google voice app(or load it) without a data connection. Texts can be sent with no mobile data turned on.
Just setup the Sprint/Google Voice integration in settings at google.com/voice.

I never said it was a requirement. I use GV across multiple devices and have better luck with the GV app for messaging than the native app. You'll have to find out what works best for you.

Advantage to using the GV App: Messaging sync'd across multiple devices/screens. Easy to read conversations on your home PC, etc.
Advantage to using the stock messaging app: The ability to read/write MMS. These aren't directly supported by GV last I looked.

The OP's question was whether the stock messaging client worked and if he should disable it to use google voice. Not whether he could sync his google voice messages across devices and how it looked on his computer.
Using the stock messaging app to send through google voice doesn't change how it looks on his PC and whether his messages sent via stock app show up on his PC. They will always show up through the google voice app or google voice website.
I do agree though there are advantages to both. I use both apps for different purposes. I just find the GUI and notifications of the stock app(and GoSMS popups) to be far more informative than having to load up a program that has to connect to the internet and load before I can read or send a message. To each their own.

My experience was different when using my Epic 4G Touch. Messages that I sent using the stock app there were not sync'd across my google voice account. Only the received messages were shown everywhere. If that experience is different on other devices or I set it up improperly, I apologize. I also can't speak towards any experience with the GoSMS app.
If you initiaite an SMS session first from the GV app and you get a reply (assuming you have it in GV Settings to also receive messages to stock Messaging app), any messages you send and receive henceforth from the stock Messaging app will show up (synced) in the GV app.
I do this all the time. Why? Because the GV app is slow to refresh most times, Sprint's 3G speeds are not that great where i am so i am usually waiting for GV to refresh, and once i've gotten a reply i'm just using regular SMS really over the 1x network and still everything gets synced to my GV account.

VZW Voicemail

My phone is sending calls to my voicemail as it should, but I'm not getting a notification. I suspect it's because the phone's name and picture doesn't show up in my list of phones and seen as a "non-verizon device.
Should the notifications show up once VZW releases the phone, or will it forever be "unrecognized"?

You need to log on to verizonwireless.com and change your voice mail option from "visual voicemail" to "basic voicemail"

Apparently it is included in my More Everything plan. Now, if I could only figure out how to use it, or unsubscribe....
VZW FAQ's talk about an actual VVM app. I don't have it, and cannot locate in the Play Store. Without that app, I can't figure out how to access VVM to try it. Maybe I'd like it.
Not having the app means I also cannot access VVM settings to unsubscribe. Fascinating Catch 22.........

I logged in to my account on verizonwireless.com and was able to change my plan from visual to basic. i needed to use an actual computer to do it since I couldn't find the option when browsing from mobile ...

Actually, as I was looking around, I found an app called "youmail".
Just installed it, and I'm going to give it a go. I works like VVM, but first it "intercepts" calls going over to VM @ my VZW server, and then puts them in the youmail inbox. It puts an alert up in the notification barWhat I find intriguing is that it can send an email alert, which allows me to hear the VM from within the email, and I can access my account and my messages from the web. It can also send TXT alerts, but hey, that means I have my phone in hand, so what's the point of that?
Better lucky than good. I'll entertain myself with this app for a bit. Then, I'll see if I want to go back to the VZW service
I've been on YouMail since I got my N6 in December. So far, so good.
